Her groundbreaking album I’m The One from 1972 has experimental voice processing that scares small children whilst being warm – it’s Funky, Singer-Songwriter, Rock and Jazz simultaneously. #MickRonson covered a fractured version of the title track on his Slaughter On Tenth Avenue album from 1974, Al Kooper covered her song Been and Gone in 1973 on his Naked Songs album. Although she has made a dozen albums, between 1988 and 2000 she released nothing at all and she hasn’t released a new album – she is an enigma. Annette Peacock has the name of a rock star. (It’s not an assumed name, but not her given one, either—she married the jazz bassist #garypeacock and kept the excellent moniker after they split.) What’s more, when I meet her, she talks like a rock star: “Mick Ronson told me the air was good in Woodstock, so I moved there.” And, as all her album covers from the nineteen-seventies to the present make clear, she has the look of one, too.

Happy birthday to Mick Ronson, born on this day in 1946. Michael Ronson was a guitarist, songwriter, multi instrumentalist, arranger, and producer. He achieved critical and commercial success working with David Bowie as one of the Spiders from Mars. He was a session musician who recorded with Bowie, followed by several albums with Elton John, John Mellencamp, Love Reed, Mott the Hoople, Ian Hunter, also Morrissey, and was a sideman in touring bands with Van Morrison and Bob Dylan. He initially wanted to be a cellist, but moved in to guitar when discovering the music of Duane Eddy, whose sound on the bass notes of his guitar sounded to Ronson similar to that of the cello. Mick Ronson died from liver cancer on April 29, 1993 at the age of 46. “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” released in 72 and is the 5th studio album from David Bowie. This is the follow up to his masterpiece, “Hunky Dory.” This LP is considered Bowie’s breakthrough album. As of January 2016 it had sold over 7.5 million copies worldwide. How can you not love this LP? The final song on the 1st side of the LP, “It Ain’t Easy,” was the earliest song recorded for the Ziggy Stardust album, having been laid down in 1971 for possible inclusion on “Hunky Dory.” It was written by Ron Davies and is the only non-Bowie song on the album. It’s a widely covered song by musicians of the period, including Three Dog Knight, Long John Baldry and Dave Edmunds Who even released a version of this song for his album Rockpile in June of 1972, the same month as David Bowie! It was never performed by Bowie live during his Ziggy Stardust period or since that time. May 26th would've marked Mick Ronson's 78th birthday. Born in Hull in 1946, he grew up as a classical trained musician. He joined and played in a couple of local bands such as the Rats, the Mariners, and the Crestas to name a few, before finding success with Bowie and the Spiders from Mars. "I think for somebody like that who did it, and who worked hard to do it, it just goes to show what you can do with a bit of dedication. He was one of those people that everybody seemed to know. It was like having a member of the family making, its really lovely. He made a massive difference to a lot of people.” - Lynne Mitchell He led a versatile musical career working as a guitarist and producer for several artists. He gave us some of the most memorable and iconic guitar solos. Not to mention his talented work on string arrangements which often goes unnoticed. When we think of the great guitarists of the 70's or 80's Mick is often forgotten about. He was one of the greats in his own right and has been noted as such. At the time he definitely was considered one of the best guitarists around. Many musicians have cited him as an influence. Its no surprise considering how people felt a magnetism to his piercing guitar playing. Its really saddening to think how he never got to make it to 78 years old. Remembering Guitarist Extraordinaire Mick Ronson on his Birthday. He played with David Bowie, Ian Hunter & Bob Dylan, to name a few. I took these photos in 1980 in Central Park’s Wollman Rink in Manhattan at the 2nd concert I ever photographed when I was just a 16 yr old amateur.
