Today marks the 55th anniversary of the second studio album by Jeff Beck, and the first credited to the Jeff Beck Group, "Beck-Ola".Released in June 1969, it is regarded, along with its predecessor "Truth", as a seminal work of heavy metal due to its use of blues toward a hard rock approach and the squaring off of Beck's guitar against Rod Stewart's vocals, duplicated the same year by Beck's good friend Jimmy Page with his singer Robert Plant in Led Zeppelin. Following the sessions for this album, the Jeff Beck Group toured the United States. They were scheduled to play Woodstock and are listed on posters promoting the festival, but by then internal friction had reached the breaking point and both Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart were out of the band. Stewart and Wood would form the Faces with members of the Small Faces in 1969. The album cover features a reproduction of Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte's The Listening Room. Released on this day in 1972. “Jeff Beck Group” is the 4th studio album from The Jeff Beck Group and the 2nd album with the line up of Jeff Beck, Bobby Tench, Clive Chaman, Max Middleton and Cozy Powell. Check out the original sleeve of this quadraphonic LP with hi-fi stereos being advertised. ⏮ The album was produced by Steve Cropper and often referred to as the “Orange Album,” because of the orange which appears prominently at the top of the front cover. After a life threatening car accident in 1969, Jeff Beck took an extended break. He sustained major injuries including a fractured skull. He re-emerged in 1971 with a new band, a new album, “Rough and Ready,” and an attempt to combine the Memphis sound with hard rock. His next release, “Jeff Beck Group” shows that he was already moving beyond his soul rock mix and moving more towards his jazz/rock fusion work. The band joined Beck at TMI Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. Some of the songs they worked on were already used in their stage show, and unlike “Rough and Ready” they also recorded 5 cover songs for this album, including a new version of Ashford & Simpson’s “I Can’t Give Back the Love I Feel For You” and Carl Perkins’s Sun Records release, “Glad All Over” from 1957. The Steve Cropper and Jeff Beck collaboration “Sugar Cane” was one of several songs written while in the studio. At an “end of recording party,” Beck was congratulated by Don Nix on his version of “Going Down,” which Nix had written and was originally released by the band “Moloch” in 1969. Freddie King had covered the song in 1971. “Jeff Beck Group“ was not well received by contemporary music critics. I love this album and it has some great tunes; “Ice Cream Cakes,” “Highways” and of course, the classic “Going Down.” #jeffbeckgroup #jeffbeck #icecreamcakes
