The Gallery is proud to present In The Forest, an exhibition of art photos by the distinguished French photographer @didiergoupy. Didier spent literally months in Glen Affric and Royal Deeside taking photographs of the changing nature of the forest in these areas and his photos capture wonderfully the multiple layers of the canopy, trees and branches, combining with the umber foliage below. He creates a sense of mystery in these ancient arboreal sites and skillfully reproduces his images where all the elements are in focus, so much so that his work has all the attributes of a painting. "The forest becomes a being with multiple changing faces. As always in his work Goupy settles into his subject, inhabits it, questions it at length in order to grasp its unity. His quest extends beyond technique. Britischer Horror-Anthologiefilm produziert von #amicusfilms geschrieben von #robertbloch , dem Autoren von Psycho. Durch das Setting in einem britischen Anwesen, hat der Film einen gothischen Touch, aber er spielt dabei in der (damaligen) Gegenwart… Bei Anthologiefilmen ist es immer so eine Sache: die Vignetten sind meist 20 bis 30 Minuten lang und laufen oft auf eine eine Art Pointe hinaus. Die ist entweder abstrus, oder vorhersehbar. Das liegt natürlich auch an der notwendigen Einfachheit der Stories. Asylum ist für einen Anthologie-Film schon in Ordnung, erzählt vier Horrorgeschichten inkl. Rahmenhandlung und ist gut besetzt. #herbertlom und #petercushing als Altstars, aber eben auch #charlotterampling und #brittekland als junges (Star-)Gemüse können sich sehen lassen. Das Budget war offenkundig nicht sonderlich üppig und so funktionieren manche der Tricks besser als andere (Stichwort „Killerpuppen“), aber das tut dem Spaß kaum einen Abbruch. Asylum liefert 90 Minuten nostalgischen Grusel, der angestaubt wirken darf. (3* / 5*) Die #bluraydisc von X-Rated / VZM Medien liefert den Film in ordentlicher Qualität und kommt immerhin mit zwei Audiokommentaren. The Forbidden Room (2015) If Maddin’s value can be measured in laughs-per-minute, this is probably his masterpiece. 💀 It’s an anthology where every story is based on the surviving summaries and reviews of movies that have been completely lost. They cooked old records to make the soundtrack, except for when Sparks (!!!) jumps in to provide a musical number. Is this movie real??? 💀 The opening titles alone are mind melting. Then the, ah, stories start. 💀 It opens with a bathing lesson then segues into “hopeless men, hopelessly chewing” aboard a doomed submarine. They’re watching over some jelly which is rapidly fading and if they surface the sub will explode. 💀 Then a woodsman comes thru the airlock and tells next story, which is the Trojan War but with lumberjacks. He encounters a cultish tribe of forest thieves and must complete a series of trials—e.g., bladder-slapping—to gain their trust. And it turns out lumberjack Helen has become the cult’s queen. 💀 This is all in like the first ten minutes. There’s a skull faced man who uses lady skeletons to coerce fraudulent insurance claims, a ghostly train ride that turns “pleasantly euphoric” as a madman screams one car over, amnesiac women, amnesiac men, a whole amnesiac world where genres, film styles and stories overlap until all reason goes down the bathtub drain. Maddin makes universes out of paper and sticks by using every worn-out trick in the moviemaking book and he totally gets away with it. 💀 A rollicking slog, magnetic and totally alienating and clearly really hard to describe. C'est pile le moment où Marie est tourmentée par ce qu'il peut arriver à son fils adulé puis exécré, ce qu'elle exorcisera de sa voix hypnotique avec un "il ne se passera rien", inepte. Du sacre au sacrifice, processus inhabituel car inversé. Ce film est remarquable par sa qualité picturale et son choix radical qui consiste à partir d'un tableau pour investir ses détails qui se mettent à vivre ou plutôt à survivre dans un contexte d'inquisition. L'image est finement privilégiée avec un travail des couleurs et de cadrage exceptionnel qui donne l'impression de revivre et respirer une époque révolue que surplomblent d'atemporels symboles et comportements.
