I’m definitely due a rewatch of Angel Heart (1987), not only one of the best psychological horror movies ever made, but maybe my personal favourite film of all time. Superb acting, brilliant cast, and of course exceptionally written and directed. Harry Angel je soukromý detektiv a veterán z války. Jednoho dne dostane tajemnou zakázku - najít muže, o kterém deset let nikdo neslyšel, nikdo ho neviděl. Harry přijme a rozjíždí se kolotoč plný mrtvol. Rozhodně oceňuji, jak moc je kniha čtivá. V příběhu se setkáváme s černou magií a poměrně detailně popsanými rituály. Harry si vždycky najde důvod se napít. Počet mrtvol je vlastně tak trochu úsměvný, ale pro mě tenkou hranici k bizarnosti nepřekročil. Vyústění celé knihy jen velmi překvapivé. Tahle kniha byla v originále vydaná v roce 1978, u nás přeložena v roce 1993. Přesto je pořád aktuální, velmi odvážně popisná a opravdu velmi zajímavá. Vzhledem k množství knih, co mi ještě chybí k přečtení (těch je tak zhruba nekonečno), jsem za štafetu vážně vděčná. Never seen it, despite once upon a time calling myself a Ridley Scott fan. The film was, if not exactly savaged, at least somewhat derided back in the day, and I didn’t want to sully the rep of the creator of Alien and Blade Runner so I skipped it. Turns out he’d go on to do enough to sully his rep for me by himself, though never losing it so much that I’m not at least interested in seeing his other films - they just became less and less of a priority and after taking an instant dislike to possibly his biggest box office success, Gladiator, I stopped caring: he hadn’t been great in a long time, and if he managed to again hit with a once-in-a-decade classic, it would still be there later to watch. Anyway, Tim Curry plus makeup and set design plus cinematography have always gotten props in this film, Cruise is Cruise, and Mia Sara is, well, I guess we’ll see. It’s her feature debut and I’ll cut her some slack. Writer William Hjortsberg had his novel Angel Heart - another forces-of-good-vs-Devil story - adapted after this, but only two other writing credits. I’m watching the director’s cut, which features a Jerry Goldsmith score rather than the better known Tangerine Dream one from the theatrical version. Cinematographer Alex Thomson worked closely with Nicolas Roeg as his camera operator before moving on to genre fare - especially fantasy - and a working relationship with both Ridley Scott and Michael Cimino. IMDb credits include massive lists for the design, makeup, effects, and costume departments and headed by Leslie Dilley/Norman Dorme/Ann Mollo, Rob Bottin, I’m not sure, and Charles Knode respectively. I’m not expecting greatness, but I’m hoping that the 23 or so extra minutes in this cut make the difference between the pans the film originally got and at least a solid and coherent fantasy film. Angel Heart- It's 1955 and New York PI Harry Angel is contacted by a man named Louis Cyphre to find John Liebing, a singer who goes by the name of Johnny Favorite. But the further he goes in his investigation the more people around him are killed and in the end, it’s revealed that Johnny and Harry are the same person. Johnny always dreamed of being famous and he sold his soul to Satan to make it happen. But Johnny didn’t want to pay what was due and instead killed another young man and ate his heart before he was drafted into service and was wounded in action and forgot who he was. In revealing his true identity, he discovers that it was him doing the killing all along and Louis had hired him to remember who he was because he’s actually Lucifer himself. Lucifer couldn’t claim what was his until Johnny remembered who he was, what he done and what was owed. About a month back I finally found a nice reprinting of #fallingangel , the #supernatural themed private detective #horrornovel from #williamhjortsberg . I'd originally read this in 1982 when Fawcett published the #massmarketpaperback and my mind was blown. You likely know it's the basis for the movie #angelheart , starring #mickeyrourke before he started looking like Michael Myers. 🙄 Google it. It's terrifying. 😱 This edition has a nice intro by crime writer #jamescrumley , a note from #ridleyscott , a letter from #stepheking to the original publishers #harcourtbracejovanovich praising the novel AND an afterwards by the late author. 👻 Fallen is another crime/ horror hybrid,a 1998 movie #thriller with #denzelwashington versus a serial killer he's already seen executed, but who's back from the dead for more. 👻 The movie wasn't a hit but has a moderate #cultfollowing today. With the horror element of the story turning on an ancient #demon possessing body after body, there's an annoying gimmick of the possessed identifying themselves by singing Time Is On My Side by #therollingstones . 🫣 It's the kind of wannabe clever stunt Stephen King occasionally pulls when he has a Monster From Beyond who JUST WON'T SHUT UP. Like #pennywise the Evil Clown in IT. “Angel Heart” (1987) has always been one of those movies that I knew the poster to, knew that De Niro had the nails-related cameo, and knew it was on many lists, but had never seen it. It does earn its place in the pantheon of spooky, atmospheric movies, marrying the noir aspect of the singular detective with a paranormal-tinged story in a way that does feel underutilised. @mickey_rourke_ fully commits to the role of a detective who is in over his head, but still at home in the seedy underbelly of society. His suits are always a little rumpled, he’s always tired, but clearly paying attention. @officiallisabonet delivers a fantastically understated but sultry performance in a fantastic small role. Any time @charlotteramplingofficial shows up on screen is welcome. Overall, the film makes the most of its locations, enhanced by great moody night shoots by DP Michael Seresin; long shadows and hard side-light add to unease. It does devolve into a bit of Irving the Explainer at the end to wrap up all the unanswered questions, even if the story up to that point is sufficiently mysterious. Filmen är baserad på William Hjortsbergs läsvärda roman ”Falling Angel” (1978). ”Angel Heart” faller inom den genre som brukar betecknas ”occult detective fiction” (även om Angel inte är någon ”ockult utredare” per se) och som sådan är den högst njutbar. Mickey Rourke är som gjord för rollen som den charmige anti-hjälten Angel och det är uppenbart att De Niro har några kul dagar på jobbet i sitt porträtterande av den diaboliskt anstrukne Cypher. Den troptyngda noirgenren återges också mycket stilsäkert av regissör Parker. Vi bjuds på jazzmusik, stökiga syltor, dräpande dialog, en vårdslös privatdetektiv, whiskey och cigaretter (Rourke är en mästare på att få rökning att se coolt ut), en mystisk uppdragsgivare och lika mystiska kvinnor (Charlotte Rampling och Lisa Bonet i två centrala biroller) och så vidare. well this might be different and a first, but I am going to make this a bit brief, but I have finished these three books between 2020 to now. starting with dark harvest written by Norman partridge and to describe it as think of it as the most dangerous game with Jack pumpkinhead from return to oz but as a slasher killer. it does move in a pace, and I can't wait to s8ee the movie adaptation. next is the severin films book adaptation of cruel jaws by Brad Carter and if you feel the movie version lack enough sleaziness, this book is for you although it drags at times at least it's entertaining. now I've finished the adaptation of angel heart called fallen angel by William hjortsberg and man its vastly different from the movie version, I mean I knew it was different but I mean I feel its more in line with a noir with supernatural elements with the sense of dread thar builds up if you know how it ends but very different and almost shocking. #paperbacksfromhell #paperbackbooks #bookreview #darkharvest #normanpartridge #crueljaws #bradcarter #fallenangel #angelheart #williamhjortsberg

Ten pierwszy zleca mu sprawę odszukania piosenkarza Johnny'ego Favorite'a. Z pozoru błahe zlecenie wrzuci Angela wprost w świat wierzeń voodoo i satanistycznych praktyk. Na końcu tej ścieżki czekać jednak będzie ostateczna gra o duszę detektywa. Mógłbym jeszcze wiele pisać o tej książce, lecz ta i bez opisu broni się sama. Siedzę ze szklaneczką dobrego trunku i wpatruję się przez okno w czeluści nocnej metropolii. Za mną słychać głosy potępionych, przede mną wyrastają olbrzymie kłęby dymu z cygar. Klimaty noir fascynują mnie na swój sposób od dawna, a mając do czynienia z kryminałem w tej stylistyce nie mogłem oprzeć się temu tytułowi, który jakby tego było mało, zmierza również w kierunku okultystycznego horroru, choć wątek ten nie gra tu pierwszych skrzypiec. Fabuła może wydawać się przerysowana i nieco przewidywalna, lecz w tym przypadku powieść przez to zyskuje czarując swym urokiem, przy okazji odsłaniając przed czytającym gęstą atmosferę fabularnej intrygi, gdzie każda postać nie jest tą za jaką się początkowo podaje, a Nowy Jork odgrywa własną, mroczną rolę. Wyłaniający się z początku sarkastyczny obraz zmienia swe oblicze i z czasem stawia na pełen brutalności pejzaż, gdzie nie ma miejsca dla łagodnych i delikatnych. Przemoc, nieprzemijająca ciemność oraz przemykający chwilami chichot diabła tworzą wyrazisty klimat posiadający drugie dno, albowiem z tego miszmaszu rodzi się nieuniknione pojęcie śmierci - końca, który spotka każdego, nie pytając przy tym o zdanie drugiej strony. William Hjortsberg popełnił opowieść meandrującą między kilkoma gatunkami, nadając jej swój własny charakter, a jednocześnie nie tworząc tylko i wyłącznie taniej rozrywki. Odnalazłem się w tym świecie, pełnym alkoholowych oparów, tańczących światłem neonów i dużej dawki krwistych kawałków torujących drogę dla rogatego i spółki.

Avec #MickeyRourke #RobertDeNiro #LisaBonet et #CharlotteRampling Le film a déclencher des vagues de polémique, voir même un scandale raciste. Avec des scenes assez explicite de #LisaBonet âgé de 18 ans à l'époque. Et le film avait reçu des critiques mitigés voir même négative. Et rembourse à peine son budget. Et j'adore ce film malgré tout sa filmographie. Mais celui là a un côté mysticisme surnaturel et le polar. Pourtant le film a des idées de mise en scène tel que l'ascenseur ou le personnage Angel descend, démoralisé et détruit par la personne qui l'a engagé, Louis Cyphre interprèté par De Niro qui en réalité le Diable. Et Harry Angel était dans un purgatoire et le diable veut son âme Et l'ascenseur symbolise son échec et sa descente dans les limbe. Comme ci le passé n'était pas oublié et les méfaits sont là pour rappelé que nous pouvons pas échapper. Bien en contraire ils sont la Ce qui représentent Louis Cyphre " est ce que le diable est avec nous, ou nous sommes avec le diable ,, ? Vous avez 4 heures Nous pouvons poussé les thématiques que les enquêteurs sont les envoyés du diable. Et la scène du cœur ou Harry il le trouve dans un journal, dans cette scène. Angel heart di William Hjortsberg W. Hjortsberg era uno scrittore e sceneggiatore statunitense che, alla fine degli anni ‘70, aveva pubblicato #fallingangel, un romanzo in stile hard boiled con elementi sovrannaturali. Il libro, ambientato negli anni ‘50, narra di Harry Angel, un detective che viene incaricato da un tale #LouisCyphre di rintracciare Johnny Favorite. Costui era stato, prima della seconda guerra mondiale, un cantante crooner di buon successo. Arruolato e spedito al fronte, viene ferito così gravemente da esser rimpatriato. Sfigurato nel corpo e nella psiche, Favorite viene ricoverato in un ospedale per reduci, dal quale a un certo punto scappa, facendo perdere le sue tracce. Angel ben presto scopre che la fuga del crooner era stata organizzata da alcuni misteriosi complici. Il detective si mette quindi alla loro ricerca, sperando che almeno uno di costoro possa rivelargli qualcosa della sorte di Favorite.. Hjortsberg aveva già cominciato a sviluppare una sceneggiatura, contemporaneamente alla scrittura del libro. Ma la sua storia non sembrava interessare alcuno studio cinematografico. Fu Alan Parker a sbloccare la situazione : opzionato il romanzo, ripartì da capo con la sceneggiatura, apportando modifiche, temporali e d’ambientatazione, e cambiando il titolo. Un ulteriore svolta si ebbe con l’entrata nel cast di #robertdeniro. Costui avrebbe dovuto interpretare #harryangel, e Jack Nicholson avrebbe dovuto ricoprire il ruolo di Cyphre. Ma Nicholson rinunciò e DeNiro decise di volere la sua parte. A interpretare il detective venne allora chiamato Mickey Rourke. A completare il cast, Lisa Bonet, nelle pause della lavorazione della sitcom I Robinson. Consiglio vivamente sia il libro, sia il film. Menzione speciale per quell’altro satanasso di @qdc_quintadicopertina. Ho almeno 30 libri in arretrato. Ma quel tizzone d’inferno, col suo ultimo post, me ne ha imposto un ennesimo. Andate un po’ a vedere sul suo profilo. Mefistofelico compare. Più suadente di Al Pacino ne L’avvocato del diavolo.
