“Sometimes life is merely a matter of coffee and whatever intimacy a cup of coffee affords."; or “He lived on a shoestring of loneliness." Sounds rather melancholy. The book is anything but. This eccentric orgy of absurd antics was delightfully mad. Brautigan’s writing is whimsical and introspective in nature, with a touch of surrealism and irony. Brautigan is a little difficult to review (at least for me) in the conventional sense, but his gift for words and wordplay is where I found the most enjoyment and appreciation. Nonetheless, this is perhaps a nice little introduction to his work, if you’re curious. Located along the rugged and mountainous Central Coast of California, it is a place that has been a refuge for many artists and writers. Creatives have been wandering the picturesque coastline since the early 1900s, painting episodic depictions of a sacred place two hours south of the Bay Area: Steinbeck, Miller, Kerouac and, it turns out, Brautigan. . . In fact, Miller makes a little cameo appearance in this book. So watch out for that. . . The novel orbits around a simple idea. A man believes his ancestor was a Confederate General. And that is something that he, at first, sets out to prove. And once an answer is found... the book charts the character's response to that information. . . Beyond that it's about a group of people who live in Big Sur and have their misadventures. From threatening to kill teenagers to going on the game, so to speak, for three months a year to fund the rest of the year living a spiritual life. . . It's not pretty. It's borderline offensive to today's gentle sensibilities in a lot of places. But it's interesting. And I found it a notch above the other books I've read by Brautigan. I loved Mellon. Got to love an antihero. . . I'd give it more than five stars, but I don't think I can afford another one. . . Frogs have been a bit of a running theme recently. I don't even think it is frog season here. Is there a frog season in the UK? Anyway, there's been a lot of them on my phone recently. Лі Меллон нікому нічого винен не був, оселився в будинку з трьома стінами з видом на каньйон і час від часу лаявся з місцевими жабами. Ще не хіпі, але Апокаліпсис вже близько. І розповідає Бротіґан про це якось легко, необтяжливо, у багатьох письменників поетичність мені здається надмірною, недоречною, але не у нього. Здавалося б, як уже тільки не описували настання ночі або світанку, але завжди можна знайти щось іще: "..ніч витікала із кожною священною краплею віскі." "Надходила ніч, позичаючи світло до ранку. Спочатку вона позичила його всього на кілька центів, але тепер щосекунди позичала вже на тисячі доларів. Світло незабаром скінчиться, банк зачиниться, касири залишаться без роботи, а президент банку вчинить самогубство." І нехай книга вже скінчилась, але я ще чую її океан (коли його не заглушають жаби). Richard Brautigan was born on this day in 1935. He was an American novelist, poet, and short story writer. His work often employs black comedy, parody, and satire. He is best known for his 1967 novel Trout Fishing in America. Brautigan was raised in poverty; he told his daughter stories of his mother sifting rat feces from their supply of flour to make flour-and-water pancakes. He lived with his family on welfare and moved about the Pacific Northwest for nine years before the family settled in Eugene, Oregon in August 1944. Many of Brautigan's childhood experiences re included in the poems and stories that he wrote from as early as the age of 12. His novel So the Wind Won't Blow It All AWay is loosely based on childhood experiences, including an incident in which Brautigan accidentally shot the brother of a close friend in the ear, injuring him only slightly. Джейн Остін «Гордість і упередження» ⠀ Авторка ще задовго переграла мене тим, що до цієї книги ставився з певним упередженням. Не те, щоб я думав, що це суто сентиментальний роман – інакше б він не тримався досі на плаву актуальності та попиту, але, якби не розповідь Каті (@hasan_kateryna), то я б ще довго його уникав, обираючи інші історії. ⠀ ⠀ Книга сподобалася розмаїттям тих проблем характеру, які нікуди не зникли. І, напевно, головний конфлікт роману якраз і будується між характерами людей і їхніми бажаннями – наскільки ми самі можемо стати на заваді мрій. ⠀ ⠀ Окрім головної лінії інтерес виник до різноманіття яскравих персонажів, що підняло та розвинуло низку питань, таких як наслідок байдужої іронії до справ сім’ї, побудова сім’ї на «матеріалістичних» почуттях. І читаючи це, не можна сказати, що правда цих персонажів дещо перебільшена для посилення ефекту. ⠀ ⠀ Тож, книга викликала приємні враження, зосередившись в основному на характерах, взаємовідносинах і бажаннях. 근 5년 간 나의 독서 경험 중 가장 강력했던 것들을 꼽으라면 망설이지 않고 말할 수 있는 책들이 있다. 게르드 브란튼베르그의<<이갈리아의 딸들>>이 그랬고(이 책을 군대에서 읽다니...), 오르한 파묵의 <<순수박물관>>도 거기에 속한다. 세 권을 더 대라면 나는 <<워터멜론슈가에서>>, <<미국의 송어낚시>>, <<임신중절>>을 꼽을 것인데 놀랍게도 이 세 권의 책은 한 사람의 저서다.

리처드 브라우티건... 이제는 이름만 들어도 심장이 떨릴 정도로 내게 큰 영향을 준 작가가 된 그...

작가의 이름을 처음 접한 건 박정대 시인의 시집 <<내 청춘의 격렬비열도엔 아직도 음악 같은 눈이 내리지>>를 읽을 때였다. 이 시집에 <<워터멜론슈가에서>>에 바치는 오마주 시가 수록되어 있었다. 시집 자체가 굉장히 매력적이었으므로 나는 브라우티건이라는 이름을 ‘언젠가 한 번쯤 읽어봐야 할 작가’리스트에 올려두었다.

아무래도 이미 읽은 브라우티건의 다른 책들은 재독한 후에야 리뷰를 올릴 것 같다. 그의 글을 요약하기란 쉽지 않지만 한 번 시도해보자면 브라우티건의 글은 ‘찬사’다.

아, 그보다는 ‘천사’가 어울리려나? 아니, ‘무지개 송어’는 어떨까? 촛불? 악어? 워터? 멜론? 슈가?
.
아, 역시 한 마디로 요약할 수가 없다. 하지만 가장 먼저 ‘찬사’를 고른 것은 브라우티건의 글들이 비트 세대의 반체제 정신을 수용하여 60~70년대 미국 사회에 정면으로 도전하기 때문이다. 처음 읽었던 <<워터멜론슈가에서>>는 단지 ‘환상적인 이야기’라는 장점(부디 속는 셈 치고 한 번 읽어보시라... 그동안 읽었던 환상 소설들과는 차원이 다른 무지갯빛 세계가 책장을 넘길 때마다 쏟아져나온다...)만으로도 내게 최고의 독서경험이 될 만큼 강렬했지만 남들이 다 말하는 ‘반체제 정신’을 작품에서 읽어내기란 어려웠었다. 하지만 몇 년에 걸쳐 그의 다른 작품들을 단계적으로 읽은 결과.... 리처드 브라우티건의 저항정신과 풍자가 단연 우주 최강임을 인정하지 않을 수 없었다...

이번에 읽은 <<빅서에서 온 남부 장군>>은 다른 작품들에 비해 ‘비트 세대’(1950년대 미국 캘리포니아를 중심으로 ‘반체제’와 ‘무한의 자유’등을 추구했던 이들이다. 미국 사회의 모든 것을 다 싫어했고, 마약과 머리에 꽃 꽂기를 좋아했던 듯... 후에 히피 세대와도 연결된다. 책 제목의 ‘빅서’역시 캘리포니아의 지명이다.)의 색채가 짙다.

요약하자면, ‘약 빨고’ 쓴 소설이다. <<빅서에서 온 남부 장군>>을 읽노라면 길게 쓰인 ‘시’같다는 생각이 드는데 이는 소설에서 기대되는 ‘개연성’이나 ‘논리성’이 작품에 전혀 적용되지 않기 때문이다.

만약 브라우티건을 읽기로 마음먹었다면 첨부한 사진 속 순서대로 읽어보는 것도 좋을 것이다. 중간에 비트 세대 시인인 앨런 긴즈버그의 시집을 끼워 넣은 것은 <<빅서에서 온 남부 장군>>을 위함이지만 사실 읽는 순서는 큰 상관이 없다.

참고로 <<워터멜론슈가에서>> 국내 발행본은 최승자 시인이 번역하셨다... 정말 환상적인 콜라보다.

Mi descubrimiento literario del año ha sido, sin duda, Richard Brautigan, del que comenté hace unas semanas su “La pesca de la trucha en América”. Deslumbrado por su vida y su estilo, conseguí su primera novela, escrita en el 61 y publicada en el 65 tras el éxito de la citada “pesca”. . “A Confederate general from Big Sur” es una novela, pero obviamente no al uso. En ella, el narrador, un tipo más bien inocente y que se deja llevar demasiado, entra en contacto con Lee Mellon, un vagabundo que dice ser descendiente de uno de los grandes generales confederados de la guerra de Secesión y que quiere reclamar la región californiana de Big Sur para su ejército. Ambos perdedores emprenden camino a este lugar, pero obviamente no les ocurrirán más que hilarantes desgracias acentuadas por las drogas y el hambre. . La novela podría considerarse un añadido a esa época en que los “beats” y su círculo se fascinaron por Big Sur y establecieron allí comunas y vivencias, algo que el mismo Kerouac relató en su novela homónima. Pero como luchando contra la seriedad y dramatismo que éstos ponían a su vida y obra, Brautigan contrapone humor, ridiculez, exageraciones y ese sano sentido desmitificador del que le importa un pito lo que piensen de él. This gorgeous looking guy on the left is no other than underground novelist Richard Brautigan. In the early 1960s he wrote one of my favorite novels, „A confederate General from Big Sur“. It features one of the most memorable characters you´ll probably ever meet in the history of literature, Lee Mellon, an hilarious guy, always drunken, always in trouble, who believes he is a descendant of a Confederate general from Big Sur, California. Brautigan himself had a very complicated life, spent some time in a mental hospital with the diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia and clinical depression, and committed suicide at the age of 49 in 1984. _ گاهی وقت ها اینطور است . نه هیچ صحبتی از آینده است و نه کوچک ترین درکی از آنچه گذشته _ کتاب راجع به شخصی بهنام لی ملون است اما کلا درباره دو مردی است که از زندگی شهری خسته شدهاند و با فقر و نداری پناه میبرند به یک جای پرتی، به خانهباغی کنار یک بزرگراه در بیگسور. آنجا هر دویشان به اضمحلال میرسند. شخصیت لی ملون بسیار جالب است. برای هر کاری آداب خودش دارد. جنگ جنگ است، فرقی نمیکند داخلی باشد یا خارجی. هرکدام آثاری جبران ناپذیر برجای خواهند گذاشت. اولین تجربه نویسندگی براتیگان در بیست و هشت سالگی، در مقام قیاس شاید این کتاب متفاوت تر از دیگر آثار وی باشد ولی اگر خواننده کتابهای دیگرش بوده باشید ساختار نوشتاری براتیگان که درواقع همان بدون ساختار بودن است در این کتاب مشهود است. طنزهای خاص و لحن ویژه او وجه تمایز براتیگان است. بسیار دیده ام که این کتاب را به عنوان نسخه ای ضعیفتر از صید قزل آلا در آمریکا نام می برند، ولی این کجا و آن کجا. در انتها، اگر اولین بار است از براتیگان می خوانید سمت این کتاب نیایید و پیشنهاد بهتر، کتاب در رؤیای بابل، که من فوق العاده آن کتاب را دوست می دارم است، اگر هم که براتیگان می خوانید و خوانده اید، این کتاب را هم بخوانید تا با دنیای عجیب و منحصر به فرد براتیگان بیشتر آشنا شوید. _ #ژنرال_جنوبی_اهل_بیگ_سور / #ریچارد_براتیگان / ترجمه ی #رضا_نوحی / #نشر_افق _ #کتاب #کتابدونی #book #books #bookstagram #bookish #bookworm #bibilophile #booklover #RichardBrautigan #AConfederateGeneralFromBigSur
