Good morning. Yesterday was a lazy day. Talked to my mom and ordered Instacart. It's Monday again. How does that happen? Anyway, it's time to play #bookvsmoviemonday. Angela's Ashes was the book that got me to read memiors. I loved this book. It's about his childhood in Limerick, Ireland. His family lived in poverty, and it didn't help that his father was an alcoholic. Frank Mc Court was a natural storyteller, and it came through in this book. I saw the film in the theater. I was excited because I loved Emily Watson. The film isn't as memorable as the book. I can only remember a couple of scenes from it. My problem with the film was that even though there were many sad moments in the book, there were also some humorous moments, such as the time Frank threw up in his grandmother's backyard after having his first communion, the film solely dealt with the sad parts of the book. It's a shame that it was directed by Alan Parker because I'm a fan of his earlier films like Fame, Birdy, and Shoot the Moon. I think the book is better than the film. Another new addition to the collection. This was a childhood favorite, and one that unfortunately never got an official DVD release in North America. I ended up having to import the UK Region 2 Sing-A-Long edition. The extras from that release were not ported over to this release, which is a shame because it included a director's commentary track. Set in New York City in 1929, Bugsy Malone is a gangster musical with an all-child cast. It stars a young Jodie Foster and Scott Baio, has catchy songs that will stay in your head long after the movie is over, and has Tommy Guns that shoot cream pies instead of bullets. I am a little bummed, though. In the U.S. this was released as part of the Paramount Presents line. I had heard that the Canadian editions from this line didn't include the slipcovers. Which is a shame because they are kinda cool. But I thought that was the only difference. Aside from being bilingual and not having a series entry number on the spine, the cover art is the same. It was Higbert the cat that pulled me in emotionally. Sept. 20 1978 was the premiere of Midnight Express. Director Alan Parker’s grim, harrowing prison drama did little to glamorize life in a Turkish prison as we follow American drug courier Billy Hayes’ hellish existence there. Brad Davis and John Hurt were both terrific in their roles, and the score by Giorgio Moroder was quite memorable. But for me, the true star of the film was Higbert. Transforming Pink Floyd's magnum opus The Wall into a film was no mean feat, and Alan Parker largely succeeded with a spectacular mix of live action and eye-popping animation, even if he hated the process of making the movie because of constant conflict with Roger Waters and artist Gerald Scarfe. A VIDA DE DAVID GALE (2003) Alan Parker David Gale é um condenado no corredor da morte por ter matado e estuprado sua colega de trabalho, Constance. Há três dias de ser executado, ele cede uma entrevista para uma repórter, onde conta toda a verdade sobre sua vida. O filme aborda temas como pena de morte, alcoolismo, sociedade e crimes. Alan Parker montou uma trama de tirar o folego, onde Kevin Spacey, Kate Winslet, Laura Linney, mais uma tropa de coadjuvantes encabeçam esse drama, numa história promiscua, crua e difícil de se aceitar, perante a olhos conservadores. A questão da pena de morte e de quem decide quem morre ou não, vem à tona, com duras críticas há um sistema carcerário falho, numa região conservadora, onde se tem mais prisões (e igrejas) do que lanchonetes. Nota-se também, uma confusão instigante no decorrer do filme, onde se desfecha nos últimos momentos de um filme, que arduamente pega pesado contra o sistema carcerário, e de uma sociedade alienada por combater o mal contra o próprio mal.
