I recently brought Angel Heart, hadn't heard of it prior to this year but its a 1987 film. I had some idea of what I was getting into after I had watched the trailer but not a whole idea. Once it started, it gave the ominous hells kitchen vibe with its dark shadows and score. I'm not overly familar with Mickey Rouke, especially his early years in cinema. I'm more used to his cameo appearances in recent years, so this film gave me a chance to see what his like as a leading man. I know DeNiro can act, I know he does in scene he does with a but watching him in this almost feels like he was over thinking his role particularly with the way he did his dialogue. By the 22min mark, I had only zoned in whenever there was a score or music, I had started to struggle to find interest in this film. By the 40min mark, I started to realise that I got incredibly bored but I think I put it down to the fact that it's a period piece and I'm not usually good at sitting through period piece films. I will admit I didn't really understand the storyline especially when it got to the last 10-15ish mins. I'll adimit the movies lures the audience in with its choices in set, costume and score but the story is a bit odd. #angelheart #angelheartmovie

I have been watching and recommending some obscure horror movies this season and I wouldn’t recommend them if I did not think they were worth your time. But I did create a story post where I listed some tried and true classics that I know people will enjoy. Go check it out. Last night I re-visited “Angel Heart” a southern horror noir film directed by Alan Parker and stars Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro. Rourke is a small-time detective working in New York who is hired to locate a missing singer, who came back from World War 2 disfigured and sent to a hospital up north. In a bizarre series of events the investigation leads him to New Orleans where he drawn into the dark underbelly of this mysterious city. He enters the world of voodoo, the occult, lies and murder and the deeper his investigation goes the harder it will ever be for him to climb out. This is a wild movie. It is dark, disturbing but also beautifully directed by Alan Parker. If you are a fan of film noir, they don’t get much better than this. There are very few horror noirs done well if at all and this may be the top of that short list. I do have to mention that there is something that happens at the very end of this film… I mean in the last 10 seconds, that was so comically bad I have no idea how it didn’t make it on to the cutting room floor. The ending of this film is dark and heavy, the best of what noir has to offer… and then there is this shot. It pulled me right out of the moment. Then two seconds later the movie ended. It felt abrupt. I don’t think I have ever seen a movie land 99.9% of the film and then fumble seconds before it came to an end. I guess there had to be one. Besides that last moment this is still absolutely worth a watch especially if you are into dark murder mysteries at Halloween.

Angel Heart looks very good. Great resolution with no edge, excellent color with no bit-depth errors. Grain is resolved reasonably well, though a couple of scenes struggle with grain consistency and the ability to resolve the grain. The disc has some good special features on it, but the only way to get perfect grain would be to place those on another disc. But I think they've done a really good job considering. I found the audio to be a pretty standard mix. If anything, the dialog volume balancing is a little low compared to the rest of the movie. But, because of the style of the movie, it worked out fine in the end. Not absolutely perfect, but still, a very good transfer from Lionsgate, possibly one of their best. I recommend this 4K release.
