Easy Rider. Directed by Dennis Hopper. Cannes Film Festival premiere May 12, 1969. 55th anniversary of one of cinema's most ground-breaking features. In light of his passing yesterday, I can't help but think of Roger Corman. Now Corman may have not had any direct involvement with this particular film, but his influence is everywhere. It's three principle actors (Peter Fonda, Hopper, and Jack Nicholson) all worked on American International Pictures releases, while both Fonda and Nicholson were Corman regulars. It could be said that Easy Rider started out as a mash-up between Corman's 1966 Biker film The Wild Angels and his 1967 psychedelic film The Trip, both which starred Fonda, the latter also featuring Hopper and a screenplay by Nicholson. But Easy Rider, which was Hopper's directorial debut and filled with avant visuals, just connected with the counterculture audience in such a unprecedented way. Until Easy Rider, the New Hollywood era (or American New Wave) was still in it's infancy, but the film's artistic achievement combined with it's massive box office return marked a very dramatic generational upheaval in the Hollywood studio system. The old guard was out, and the long-haired, dope smokin' auteurs, many of whom were mentored by Corman himself, would now be running the show. Very groovy indeed! Audace, colto e lungimirante come pochi, dietro la Macchina lo commemoriamo per aver dato dignità al cinema di largo consumo con opere povere di budget, ma opulente al botteghino, come La bottega degli orrori e le ruspanti trasposizioni di E. A. Poe, che lo rendono il più diretto antenato precursore del blockbuster e dell'horror comico-grottesco. La sua vista dai vasti orizzonti fu, tuttavia, evidente soprattutto dal suo lavoro in veste di produttore. Some people are such giants in their careers that with their every move they change the landscape of what is possible and impossible. To call Roger Corman such a giant would be underestimating his influence. I can sit here and list off all the people who got their first breaks through him, both directly and indirectly, or I can talk about how New Hollywood came through his little workshops; but there's more to him than that. He was a great director, and a pinnacle of independent filmmaking. He worked outside of the system, and shaped it to his own specifications. From his Edgar Allan Poe adaptations, to the epicness of "The St. Valentine's Day Massacre", to his social commentary of "The Intruder", and to his fast-paced goofy movies like "Little Shop of Horrors", he knew how to tell a good story. Obviously Obsession (1976) is a pastiche of Hitchcock’s Vertigo. One of the clearest nods to the 1959 classic is in its score by Bernard Herrmann - the legendary film composer who worked with Hitch many times and, yes, scored Vertigo. When you’re making a ‘paraphrased remake’ such as this, there can be a line where imitation crosses into something else. If you’re actually having the original person write a score for your movie and having him write in his signature style, things can go quickly from ‘channeling’ to simply continuing the thematic explorations that it inspired in him. Composed very close to Herrmann’s death, he considered the score to Obsession to be the most beautiful he had ever written. This is very intriguing given that it stands among his least famous. Perhaps returning to the themes of one of his celebrated scores helped him perfect something he had been always trying to articulate. After his death in 1976, Herrmann received double Oscar nominations for both this film and his final work: Taxi Driver (1976). Just because New Hollywood was an American movement doesn’t mean it was devoid of foreign figures. In particular, the political unrest in Eastern Europe in the postwar era provided the impetus for an influx of filmmakers and craftspeople to unleash their talents on the American cinematic landscape. Cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond (who shot Obsession) was undoubtedly one of the most celebrated imports of the era. His origin story is as legendary as it is brave: he and fellow DP László Kovács put a camera in a shopping bag and covertly filmed the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Smuggling themselves and their 30 thousand feet of film to Austria, they shortly after arrived in America as political refugees. Both men went on to make their marks and define the look of film for years to come. Zsigmond’s collaborators are a veritable who’s who of the American New Wave: Altman, Allen, Spielberg, Cimino, and of course De Palma. His work was recognized by the Academy for Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). Zsigmond died on January 1st, 2016 inadvertently kicking off a year of seminal cultural deaths. Aesthete. Technician. Sensationalist. Throwback. Brian De Palma’s work is multifaceted and yet in other ways contained. On the Obsession episode we discuss the cliche of De Palma as fetishist, but that almost makes him seem like an artist constrained by their own interests. Far from it. This venerated member of the “movie brats” was far from the image we have of Spielberg or Scorsese i.e. completely gorged on movies and almost nothing else. De Palma came from a scientific background but later developed a collegiate interest in experimental theatre. Moving effortlessly from the downtown counterculture of the late 60s to the hyper violent 70s, De Palma’s signature breakthrough came when he discovered a niche that was going unfilled in the 1970s: Hitchcockian suspense. Questa scena per me resta ancora oggi la più bella, la più potente e la più suggestiva di tutta la saga di Star Wars. Oltre al bellissimo tema di John Williams che accompagna le immagini, Lucas qui riesce a trovare il perfetto punto d'incontro tra il cinema orientale di Kurosawa (la scena è una citazione al film Dersu Uzala) e quello americano classico di John Ford, il tutto unito con una messa in scena moderna in puro stile New Hollywood. It may be something of a household term now but ‘generational trauma’ was probably not rolling off many people’s tongues in the early 1970s. Yet it is undoubtedly a key theme of Ralph Bakshi’s 1973 coming of age flick Heavy Traffic. And not only that; the parent/child relationship could be considered THE central theme of Bakshi’s work. As we discuss on the episode, Michael the film’s protagonist struggles bitterly against his father’s mob ties while trying to ignore his mother’s crushing depression. His parents’ dysfunctional and abusive relationship provides the backdrop for many of his creative breakthroughs (when he isn’t trying to simply tune them out). One hopes that Michael will someday be able to break this cycle but the film doesn’t exactly leave you with any certainty that he will. This cyclical look at the human comedy is telescoped further-out in Bakshi’s American Pop (1981) which tracks 5 different generations across the landscape of the American Century’s culture and music. Even in Bakshi’s The Lord of the Rings (1978) one can’t help noticing how much more paternal towards the hobbits everyone is than they are depicted in other adaptations of the work. Perhaps it has something to do with the nature of animation itself. After all these were meant to be the first features of their kind not meant for an exclusively young audience. Perhaps Bakshi felt these films could serve as a meeting place between the generations. Or maybe he never got over his own childhood. Miami Moviegoers, let’s go to the movies! We are gathering a group of like-minded movie lovers together to experience a screening of Charade starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn at @gasc.miami! This event will also be in celebration of founder @sweetlou’s birthday. This event is taking place on Saturday, June 1st. We will first be meeting up at 6:30 PM for a social before the movie featuring games of charades for people to play while getting to know each other better! Also, a wide selection of beers will be available for purchase from the German American Social Club as well as small snacks. And then at 7:30 PM, we will begin the show! The program will begin with a 16mm film screening from the Miami-Dade Public Library’s film collection presented by @strangepursuits. And then at 8:00 PM, we will start the showing of Charade! 💭1960년대 말 미국은 베트남 전쟁과 히피 문화 등으로 혼란스러운 시기였다. 기성세대들과 그들의 가치관이나 생활 방식 등에 저항하는 젊은 세대 간의 갈등이 있었다. 이 영화는 그런 시대상을 반영하지만 사회문제에 집중하기보다는 그런 역사적 배경 속에서 한 개인과 그를 중심으로 일어나는 일들에 대해 이야기하는 것에 대해 더 힘주어 말하는듯하다. 우리 모두 졸업을 하면 다음 단계로 나아가야 하지만 그 과정 중에서 목적을 잃고 방황하기도 한다. 이 영화는 다음 세대에 대한 어른의 책임과 어른이 되어가는 것에 관해 말한다.
벤자민은 대학교를 수석으로 졸업하고 LA 본가로 돌아온다. 셔츠의 단추를 모두 채우고 넥타이를 맨 모습이 착실하게 살아온 벤의 과거를 보여준다. 말 잘 듣는 벤은 답답해 보이며 수심에 가득 찬 표정을 자주 노출한다. 반면에 이 작품 속 어른들은 시종일관 벤의 말을 잘 들어주지 않고 자신들의 말만 한다. 미래세대를 대표하는 그는 기성세대를 대표하는 부모님에게는 트로피로, 로빈슨 부인에게는 성적 노리개로 대상화된다. 벤은 목적 없이 물 위에서 부유하는 삶을 살아간다.
영화 중반쯤 벤의 또래인 일레인이 등장하는데 로빈슨 부인은 자신의 소유물인 벤에 대한 집착 때문인지, ’포드‘에서의 일탈로 생긴 딸에 대한 애정 때문인지, 그것도 아니라면 성관념에 대한 선택적 도덕심 때문인지 벤에게 일레인을 만나지 말라고 경고하고 명령한다. 벤은 일레인과 사랑에 빠지게 되는데 태프트 호텔에서 종업원 눈치를 보며 죄책감 속에서 거짓말을 배워가던 그는 일레인에게 용기 내어 로빈슨 부인과의 불륜을 고백하며 성장한다. 하지만 전에 느껴보지 사랑이라는 감정이 자신을 구원해 줄 것이라 믿고 그녀와의 결합을 기존 세계로부터의 도피처로 삼고 애정 하며 집착한다.
벤은 일레인이 다른 남자와의 결혼을 앞두고 있다는 소식을 듣고 그녀를 수소문하며 찾아 나선다. 벤의 눈빛은 이전보다 능동적이며 활기를 띤다. 일레인을 추적해 가던 중 아버지가 사준 ’알파 로메오‘가 멈춰 버리는데 이때 벤은 차에서 나와 그의 두 발로 달리기 시작한다. 그에게서 기성세대로부터 받은 유산들로부터 벗어나 자력으로 성취해 내는 모습을 본다. 벤은 결혼식장에서 일레인의 마음을 돌리는데 성공하고 그녀와의 로맨틱한 사랑의 도피는 버스에 올라타고서 한숨 돌리게 된다. 하지만 흥분감에 한껏 도취되 웃음기 가득한 그들의 표정은 서서히 굳어지며 Simon & Garfunkel의
