I recently rewatched this and I had forgotten how involved with conspiracy it is. I also forgot how confusing it is but remembered halfway through what happened. This is a crime-drama mystery-thriller style movie but it definitely is sad as well. I can see a lot of religious metaphorical messages in this. It’s definitely not centered around religion but the references are there. I find this story to be quite compelling and curious. In the end you could easily be asking questions or feeling like they’d been answered. I love this film though and I’d recommend to anyone, but be prepared for a some tragic content as the title might suggest is my one warning. Sometimes you burn the lasagna… @appletv takes a big swing at this one. @brielarson plays Elizabeth Zott, fictional chemist and experimental home chef in this period piece set in 1960s America. Its nice to see her not in a super suit and giving some real vulnerability to the camera. We were treated to the pilot episode of the series airing on apple tv Oct.13th, but I do know this is a show I will come back to. Period pieces are tough on a streaming budget, but there is no part of what director @sarahadinasmith has put on screen that feels out of place and its impressive. Well, heck, I’ve got a mal heart too! Let’s compare. This story starts at the end. Buster #RamiMalek (who is not Buster) is a guy who breaks into people’s vacation homes in the mountains, during the off season. He’ll live there, eat their food & move on. He’s done it enough that authorities have been called in by the Haves to stop it. Buster, however, was not always this way. He used to be a normal guy, working the front desk of a hotel. He’s married to Marty #KateLynSheil & they have a daughter. But they’re all shoehorned in w/ his in-laws & Pauline #LinShaye has made it clear this can’t last. Problem is Buster’s job doesn’t bring in enough $ to get their own place. To make matters worse, his boss has consigned him to night duty, meaning he’s never able to see his family anymore. Sorry, man, nothing to be done, but really he wants to give day shift to someone else. 1 night, he meets #DJQualls, the self-titled Last Free Man. He manages to work his way into Buster’s life by showing up, looking for a room for the night. LFM is a conspiracy nut, living off the grid. Needless to say, no ID. Slowly but surely, he pushes Buster out of his comfort zone. But accepting him is the worst thing Buster could do. It will lead to tragedy. This is my umpteenth #film by writer/dir #SarahAdinaSmith. It’s not even intentional. I just naturally gravitate to her work. She also hires some of my fave actors, soooo… This is a surreal journey into grief & madness. It’s a project that Malek was attached to before #MrRobot, but this character has a lot of similarities to Elliot. It’m still not sure I understand everything that’s happening & will probably have to come back to this #movie later to re-watch. A couple with baby fever (Coming 2 America's Jermaine Fowler and PEN15's Anna Konkle) has second thoughts after accidentally dropping a couple's infant at a destination wedding in the latest cringefest The Drop. This sticks with the recent trend of throwing enough comedians at a target and seeing what sticks. Writer/director Sarah Adina Smith (Buster's Mal Heart) forces the cringe until viewers choke on it. What is surprising is the acting ability of Fowler, who not only can deliver the laughs but also shows a dramatic side. He could become a powerful switch-hitter in the future. Hulu seems to be the only place producing old-school, traditional R-rated comedies anymore, but the results are tragically mediocre. Who else is tired of comedy 6s? The sheer dearth of laughs in both television and film is tragic at this point in time. 6 out of 10. Review: "The Drop" from EoM contributor Justin Waldman. There is always a place in the world for cringe comedy and everyone has a different opinion as to what they define as cringy. As someone who has literally no intentions of being a parent to a human in their entire lifetime, maybe the premise of Sarah Adina Smith’s "The Drop" isn’t cringy to me because of the very real reality of something like this happening, or maybe because I’ve been on a binge of Seinfeld and I absolutely see a modern-day episode being the plot of "The Drop." Regardless though, the idea of a couple who’s actively trying for a baby to do the unthinkable to a friend’s baby on their remote wedding vacation is downright hilarious if you have a sick twisted sense of humour and do not have a child yourself or want a child. The latest movie from @aaronmoorhead and @justinhbenson does not disappoint! Another entry in their unique and marvellous canon, this brilliantly conceived, blackly comic sci-fi sees the pair back in front of the camera, this time playing two mismatched misfits who stumble onto an apparently supernatural or extraterrestrial event, and bond over their decision to document it. As the film progresses, it becomes clear that while both posit more and more outlandish theories (mostly cribbed secondhand from Podcasts and YouTube), neither is as concerned with the phenomenon than with reaping the rewards they dream will come from their documentary. The “straight” narrative becomes broken up by Crime Documentary-style talking heads, piling on more mystery rather than clarifying sequences. Are these borderline postmodern excerpts meant to be from the documentary the two protagonists are (poorly) making, or are they from someone else documenting the pair? The film could be read as a commentary on the tendency of some to find more and more conspiracy rabbit holes to explore in the hopes of transcending their shitty circumstances, or a love letter to the high strangeness of LA, but the film’s dedication is “to making movies with your friends” which may be the truth at its centre. Long may these two friends continue to make such marvellous and interesting movies. This is blackly hilarious and playfully odd, with genuinely unsettling moments, in the fine tradition Benson & Moorhead have established over their career.
