Day 16 of #mayvinylchallenge 2024. Sweet 16 - Early influences from formative years: Lamb Of God - Sacrament 2022 US reissue, white. This came out when I was 16 and I saw them live the same year along with Thyne Eyes Bleed, In Flames, Children Of Bodom and Slayer. My first actual metal concert to be quite honest and I do sometimes forget that I saw that lineup. Back when metal bands even played arenas here in little ol' Malmö. From what I can remember, I was in a huge In Flames Period of my life during that time, Children Of Bodom were sort of starting to get into the routation. But I hadn't been fully sold on LoG yet, that show changed that. The band was hungry and out to prove their worth and their place as a household name. That show kicked my 16 year old ass. I rarely ever listen to them anymore, I moved on sometime after Wrath and Resolution. But when I do, this era of the band still sound as good as ever to me. I've just grown older and more cynical and need stuff that matches that more I guess, haha. DAY 16: SWEET 16 - EARLY INFLUENCES FROM FORMATIVE YEARS Green Day - American Idiot (Reprise Records / 2015 Repress) Even though I think May 16 is made for Lagwagon, I must admit I did not even know Lagwagon when I was 16. However, I did know that George W. Bush sucked because a) I was eagerly following the news, and b) I had it hammered into my head by a band that was all across the alien nat... no, I meant all across MTV. It was the time of a pop-punk revival and in fact, the band itself also rode a wave that seemed rather unlikely by the end of the 90ies. But Green Day really went through the roof at that time and all of us had a bootleg copy of this album. I basically stopped following them shortly after. Come this year, meanwhile Green Day had more downs and a few ups. That was not one of the most influential albums on me but it definitely feels like part of the soundtrack of that time. He is a Canadian record producer and musician and has produced many albums by artists, including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Peter Gabriel, Robbie Robertson, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Spoons, and Brandon Flowers. He collaborated with Brian Eno to produce several albums for U2, including The Joshua Tree (1987) and Achtung Baby (1991). Three albums produced or co-produced by Lanois have won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Four other albums received Grammy nominations. Peter Gabriel's album So ('86) is considered to be one of his best albums and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. U2's The Joshua Tree ('87) propelled the band to superstar status, and the album is considered to be one of the world's best-selling albums. Bob Dylan's Oh Mercy ('89) was hailed as a triumph and a comeback after a few poorly reviewed albums before it. Bob Dylan's Time Out of Mind ('97) went on to win three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. These are the albums I have that Daniel has produced. Quite a legacy! I bought 'Strangeways here we come' at a reduced price (it was the time of CDs, vinyls were going out of fashion). A little later I found this wonderful 12" 45 RPM of "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" on white vinyl. It also contains "Girlfriend in a Coma" from the Strangeways album, plus 2 unreleased tracks. It was a hugely creative period, although Marr and Morrissey weren't speaking to each other and were on the verge of splitting up. Sweet 16 - Early Influences From Formative Years Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (1970) I must have been around 13 when I first started listening to Black Sabbath. I remember my mind being absolutely blown by them, though it may not have been from this album. I imagine the first track I heard was either ‘Paranoid’ or ‘Iron Man’. But I thought I’d go with the debut, where it all started. I remember borrowing CDs from any friends who had a copy, to add to my cheap MP3 player and then playing them in heavy rotation - then slowly seeking out more black clothing, thus starting my goth phase. I think Sabbath contributed a fair bit to that. The decades of influence that Sabbath has had on not just the rock and metal scene but music in general cannot be denied. Bridging genres by blending bluesy riffs and dark subject matter, bands from Type O Negative, HIM, Metallica, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and The Smashing Pumpkins (the list goes on) have all cited BS as a major influence because of that heavy, melancholic sound. The White Stripes were one of the first bands I found on my own and really dove in & fell in love with. I mean, what teenage girl in the early 2000’s didn’t want to be Meg White?! Piece Of Mind | Iron Maiden, 1983 (EMI, AUS, '83) Day 16 of the #mayvinylchallenge by @jennn_erator is Sweet 16 - Early Influences From Formative Years. What a nice coincidence: it's also the birthday of Iron Maiden's Piece of Mind, an album on steady rotation when I was 15-16. Or, rather, 'The Trooper' was on steady rotation, followed by 'Still Life' (how good is the verse riff?!), and then I would flip over to 'Revelations'. All amazing tracks! On other measures, though, PoM is one of the weaker Maiden albums of the 80s. Some songs have good riffs but are longer than they need to be ('Where Eagles Dare', 'To Tame A Land'), while others are simply filler ('Quest For Fire', 'Sun and Steel'). It also must be said: the guitar solos are bad, even on the aforementioned highlights. Compared to 1984's Powerslave, which is stunning for its solos along, PoM is filled with scrappy, noisy 2-string bursts (many sound improvised on the spot, and not in the good way). On a more positive note: 'The Trooper' is one of my favourite songs ever, and I'm happy to let other tracks play out as I wait for my precious Side B, Track 1. I went to visit my Mum today and we had a walk in the park to see the Bowie Bandstand! Back in 1969, one of Beckenham’s most famous residents, David Bowie played at the bandstand at Growth Summer Festival at Beckenham Recreation Park in 1969 which was organised by the musician himself and The Beckenham Arts Laboratory. This has led to the bandstand being known locally by some as the ‘Bowie Bandstand’. It was built in 1905 but by the 21st century had fallen into disrepair. Fundraising went on to raise money for it's repair, including personalised bricks where Bowie fans can leave their messages and dedications. Well, the official reopening is on the 17th May and it looks great. A great memorial of a day when Bowie and his impact on music wasn't yet known... . I think I have around 600 LPs with a hand full of 10” and 7” on the side. A lot of these records have been bought over the past 6 years, but I have been collecting since 2005. I’d like to think that my collection spans a vast amount of genres. There’s a lot of nostalgia and memories wrapped in the music, like most people’s collections. Even though some discs haven’t been played in a while I couldn’t bear the thought of parting with most of them. The bane of all collectors is the wanting of the next piece to add to the collection. As I’ve said before, challenges like this are good to reflect on and appreciate what we have. There’s something nice about playing music you’ve not heard in some time. Waking old memories from when you initially fell for a song, in some ways it’s like meeting up with an old friend. My set up is very bare bones. I’ve had my amplifier and cd player since I was a teenager. The record player is my fourth and have had it since 2018. The cassette player was added a few years ago as I’ve been avidly buying vaporwave and future funk over the past few years on that format, not so much any more. But I’ll get a few new tapes now and then. As much as I’d love to upgrade, it all serves its purpose and I’m happy with it for now. Music is deeply personal. How ever you enjoy you music, just enjoy it your way. As long as you support the artists you love, how ever you can. Watain - Lawless Darkness 2017 France reissue, red. I started collecting at the end of summer 2021 and it's been a dream of mine since my early teens to have my physical music collection to be all vinyl. Never really liked CDs, they feel like toys to me but it was the only option for me up until this point so I did still buy some every once in a while but it never felt that satisfying for some reason. So anyway, I've been on a bit of a rampage since I started collecting and I'm now somewhere in the 460+ records ball park when all my preorders start coming in, hehe. I need to chill, so I've started selling off stuff little by little just to still have space for new records/reissues. Nostalgia purchases sometimes don't hit like I expected them to do when I hit that order button, so they are usually the records that get sold off. This and "accidentally" ordering several copies of new records... I have a problem (: They're contained In a black 4x3 kallax, my boxsets and miscellaneous/weird packaging, 10 inches and 7 inches have a cupboard in our tv-unit. So far so good, no accidents or malfunctions! Last but not least, happy birthday @darth.abra !!! Long Time No Spin | Random Pull Out The Cardigans - Long Gone Before Daylight (2003) Here’s one I’ve not played in a while, my favourite Cardigans album. This band was huge in the ‘00s but this album for me shines above the rest. It sounds more melancholic and very Scandinavian, full of songs of regret, loss and heartbreak. I’ve been listening to these sounds for almost two decades and they still really resonate with me. The lyrics are beautifully written and nestled amidst fantastic instrumentation. There is great weight to these cleverly constructed melodies. Rather than having big bright hits like their previous release, Grand Turismo (1998), this record is more for the long play than on the radio. Similar to the album cover itself, on a comfortable early autumn evening lit by candle light. There’s even aspects of country in the mix on tracks such as ‘A Good Horse’ and ‘Live And Learn’ This pressing is the much awaited repress from 2019, as the previous ones were pretty hard to come by at a reasonable price. This LP sounds great and definitely needs to be played more often. This album is part of Art Pepper's final comeback in the mid-70s after almost 15 years of silence (due to prison and rehab). There is such a huge gap between his mellow West Coast music and his erratic life of addiction, incarceration and years of self-destruction, described in his stunning autobiography 'Straight Life'. Although no one expected him to return, he made some great albums, incorporating some gritty avant-garde playing and Coltrane influences, before his death in 1982. Day 14 of #mayvinylchallenge 2024. Long time no spin | random pull: Immortal - Sons Of Northern Darkness 2018 EU reissue, 180g black etched D-side. This was the first album I fell in love with from this legendary norwegian black metal band. As with all their albums I listened to them all on repeat while playing World Of Warcraft, especially during Wrath Of The Lich King. There's no band that personafies the cold north more than Immortal, @grimablackmetal latest record "Frostbitten" gave them a run for their money tho. This to me is probably their punkiest/brutal sounding album, very riff and drum focused while toning back a bit of the atmosphere their records are usually caked in. That being said, it's still very Immortal. Cold, cool and collected.
