Bank holiday with @zappa and the Mothers of Invention. ‘Freak Out’ the debut LP of an expansive discography set the tone- signed as a ‘white Blues band’ by Verve, Zappa took control and showed they were much more than that - delivering and early double LP which ridiculed pop culture and the commercialisation of the scene with a series of spicy vignettes that could have been done by Elvis… if you don’t pay too much attention to the lyrics…. Then he had the label hire $500 of percussion and top studio time and invited the whole LA Freak Scene to come jam for what became the whole of side 4 ‘The Return of The Son of Monster Magnet’ (although apparently they refused him the studio time to finish it). It’s side 3 that really lands today though ‘Trouble Everyday’ and ‘Help! I’m a Rock’… the two headed blues rock into extended can-esque work-out (in three parts) on the state of US race relations. A glorious album… Sinéad O’Connor’s second ‘I Do Not Want What I Have Not Got’… Of course it contains arguably the greatest song of all time, the eternal ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’, consistently moving to tears and likely will for all time… but Prince’s best, sung by the greatest vocalist, during a complicated mourning for her mother is the tip of the emotional iceberg here. ‘I Am Stretched on Your Grave’ in the Frank ‘O Connor translation, the bare title track, ‘Feel So Different’, ‘Three Babies’ and amongst the searingly personal experience songs anti-Thatcher standpoints in ‘Black Boys on Mopeds’ - she was the best of us and the power and bravery of this massively commercial album throws down the gauntlet to the beige tedium and lack of substance of so many global pop stars today. She lived it. Produced with Nellee Hooper who’s 90’s defining sound is aped massively now too. Special one this morning… the very first release from @arthurrussellmusic as ‘Dinosaur’ in 1978. This is the rare red vinyl promo 12” on Sire Records… given a mix assist from Nicky Siano - the legend from The Gallery and guitars from @davidbyrneofficial , uncredited and no doubt organised by Seymour Stein giving it the Talking Heads sparkle… it’s there in the bass attack too - a perfect punky disco party…. And then some of Arthur’s Cello slinking in. The b-side version slaps too with added brass and making more of that funky percussion amongst the cello and bass. Incredible vocal (also uncredited) from Miriam Valle too who captures the best kind of disco yearning. This one is a hard to find classic I’ve wanted for a while- even mailing Seymour about it a few years back to the response of ‘I don’t have one and not sure why the hell you’d want that!’ But well worth seeking out. Sounding absolutely huge. ‘Meddle’ by @pinkfloyd to kick off the day… it may have been constructed between tours, in different studios and with a lack of material, but I think it’s made one of their most cohesive sounding albums and a total sea change album into the empirical phase of their career. ‘Echoes’ their side long stretch out is one of the greatest which I used to watch repeatedly on the ‘Live in Pompeii’ VHS (surely overdue a legit vinyl pressing) just thinking it was the wildest magickal performance ever. Plus old school 60’s studio fry ups.
