Day 31 #mayvinylchallenge Category is: Halloween in May I really struggled to find something interesting for this theme, then I remembered this weird ass soul/disco compilation I brought back from Japan years ago. The music has nothing to do with halloween except for the first track (Soul Dracula), which is a funky but very derivative little number with a haunted house voice on top. It clearly inspired the cover art ( #1 reason I picked this up, also because it was cheap). The final day of #mayvinylchallenge Made it the whole way! Halloween in May @verybaroque and I have a few traditions every Halloween. During October we usually try to watch one or two Hitchcock films. But on Halloween night ever since we got this record, we try to stop and listen to the whole War of the Worlds original broadcast. It would have been so crazy to witness this phenomenon at the time. I always try to put myself in the shoes of those who tuned in unknowingly. Such a unique moment in history and an incredible performance by Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre. I highly recommend listening to it if you never have. May Vinyl Challenge / Day 31 / Dream Widow: Dream Widow / 2022 RSD Halloween in May / seasonal record. Last day of this years challenge, and it’s a Halloween theme. I love Halloween! Surprisingly tho, I don’t have a lot of albums that really fit the theme. My standard go-to is Raven Black, but I wanted to change it up this time. So I’m going with Dream Widow, the fictional band from the @foofighters horror film @studio666movie that came out a couple years ago. It’s @davestruestories just having fun making heavy, thrashy, death metal with themes of possession, hopelessness, satanism, and all the other cursed fun stuff. For a one-off, jokey concept album, it’s quite good, and I’m really enjoying it to wrap up this month. Thanks to @jennn_erator for putting this together. So I chose this new collaboration between legendary drummers @thecure ‘s @lol.tolhurst and #siouxsieandthebanshees @budgie working with Jacknife Lee as @lolxbudgiexjacknifelee The new album Los Angeles is quite good with guests like @lcdsoundsystem James Murphy, the Edge, @arrowdewilde of @starcrawler and members of @primalscreamofficial and @modestmouse . It’s inventive and rhythmically interesting of course and shows that creativity doesn’t end in your 60s. Day 30: Favorite Of 2024 So Far 𝐀𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞 - “𝐄𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞“ (𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒) I feel very lucky that I get to listen to music with my daughter and continue to stay up on what’s current. In my opinion, pop music is in a very strong state; in 2024, it feels less gimmicky and more authentic than it ever has. Remembering that most pop stars start out as artists, it’s refreshing to see their authenticity coming through in their songwriting and overall musical craft. The latest album by Ariana Grande is the perfect example of this. I love a concept-driven project, and the tie-ins to one of my favorite films of all time (the 2004 masterpiece “Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind”) brings this record into full vibrancy. I cannot get over how good this album is, and I haven’t heard a song as achingly beautiful as “Imperfect For You” in a long time. Bravo. #arianagrande #eternalsunshine #mayvinylchallenge2024

This abstract, glossy, and gory horror is full of phantasmagoric style. The soundtrack by Goblin is incredible. When I first saw the cover to this comic, I knew it was going to be cool, creepy, and fun. I was right! Over the years, I made it a point to complete the original comic book run - 43 issues, from 1972 through 1977. I was super excited when they announced the @marvelstudios movie last year. Operation Ivy - Energy (1989, Lookout!) - The category for Day 8 of the #mayvinylchallenge was Favorite Color/Effect/Picture Disc. I don’t have too many picture discs (maybe just this one?) and I’m not the biggest fan of them (though they’re fun), but this one actually sounds really good! I’d still like to get another copy of this album someday, though. I got this one at a Philly Punk Rock Flea Market long ago. And as many times as I’ve heard this since I was a teenager, it never gets old. It’s hitting me particularly hard right now. It’s not like the 35 year old (!) lyrics are any less relevant now. I knew exactly what I wanted to post today since the day the challenge was revealed. THE DAMNED - A NIGHT OF A THOUSAND VAMPIRES Live in London, Ear Music 2022, 2xLP, Ltd Ed, red transparent. What an over the top performance! Recorded live October 28, 2019 at The London Palladium. A full theatrical production featuring The Circus of Horrors with vampires, acrobats, fire dancers, a beautiful set and Dave Vanian in full on Dracula and Nosferatu modes! Vanian had wanted to do a unique performance of songs that were either rarely or never played live. This all exists as a concert film as well! Band, audience, crew, everyone was in costume. Great recording and I urge you to check out the film, much is up on the Tube. From Wait For the Blackout to Absinthe, Beauty of The Beast to Curtain Call, they rip through a great and rare setlist. They even cover People Are Strange and Bela Lugosi's Dead! This is a bloody spectacle! The record comes with a great poster, beautiful inner sleeves and I dig the center labels. Season of Glass | Yoko Ono, 1981 (Geffen, AUS, '81) It's the final day of the #mayvinylchallenge hosted by @jennn_erator . Thanks for a great month! Today's theme is Halloween in May | Or a Seasonal Record. The story behind the making of this album (and the record cover) is, of course, completely devastating. It would be hard to hear any of these songs without connecting Yoko's voice back to the tragedy. But I was genuinely surprised at how much I loved these songs: they're much better formed than the Yoko contributions to Double Fantasy or Milk and Honey. Season of Glass has the feel of a bittersweet afternoon cabaret show. Nothing is sentimental in the directions might expected, but many songs are loaded with biting, disarming phrases (check Nobody Sees Me Like You Do). I find myself drifting to this album not as a place of mourning, but as a strangely smart, savvy, oh-so-distant tour through genres one might remember from childhood, and through lyrics that land a different way every time. Really special. #mayvinylchallenge Day 31: Halloween in May. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Nic Raine - Dracula + The Curse of Frankenstein This 2LP set was released for RSD 2020. It features modern recordings of the scores from the two movies, both composed by James Bernard. Fittingly pressed on “blood red” and “cursed green” vinyl, respectively. Spooky, indeed! I want to thank @jennn_erator for setting up the Vinyl Challenge. This was my first time participating and I enjoyed it a lot. It made me rediscover some parts of my collection and inspired me to have more fun with it. Seeing other people’s posts has also been great. I have added several titles to my Discogs want list this month. If it’s happening again next year, I’ll be taking part! 😊 What now? Day 31: Halloween in May Nirvana Live At The Paramount 10/31/1991 Widespread Panic Live From Austin for ACL 10/31/2000 How about a couple of live recordings from Halloween shows 🎃 👻 ! These are two great performances and both are on special Halloween inspired wax! This might be my favorite Nirvana performance on wax! I’ve played this one to death!! Besides all the great songs, I love it when Dave Grohl addresses the crowd and says “So 2% of you are in costume, personally I think it’s very lame, unless you’re all supposed to be punk rockers?” As my WSP album spins, I realize this one doesn’t get on the table as much as it should. They start with a Vic Chesnut cover of “Let’s Get Down To Business.” They also cover Jerry Jospeh’s “Climb To Safety” and J.J. What better way to kick off the summer than with the latest Fleet Foxes album. Released in 2021, ‘Shore’ is a gentle and cosy record with a radiant sense of optimism, thanks to delicately embroidered melodies and natural-feeling arrangements. Even when trying to reach for the grandiose, the band manages to remain humble and sincere. …album bought for the artwork Yeasayer - Fragrant World 2012 - Mute Now, that is artsy and it does suit the music perfectly. If you’re not familiar with Yeasayer, well.. art pop would be the genre and the style ranges from indie rock to electronic and synth pop. With their latest and final record (band dissolved in 2019) they incorporated funk and psychedelia and turned it into fun indie pop. But let’s end it with this albums review. On the Light in The Attic label are Lee Hazlewood’s lost surf instrumentals, “Cruisin’ For Surf Bunnies” released as The Woodchucks. Bob Stanley compiled “76 in The Shade” on Ace Records as a recreation of what would have been on portable transistors in the long hot summer of 1976. A cheapo compilation “Disco Beach Party” picked up in a chazzer that has all your cheesy holiday favourites on it like Una Paloma Blanca, The Birdie Song, Dolce Vita and Seven Tears. Halloween In May | Or A Seasonal Record Choir Boy – Passive With Desire (2016) When it comes to Halloween appropriate music, bands like The Misfits, Rob Zombie, Lordi and Alice Cooper come to mind. Sadly, I’m still yet to have any of these artists in my collection (never say never). Instead I went with the fantastic debut album by American dream-pop band from Salt Lake City, Choir Boy. This band was introduced to me by my girlfriend late 2019 and I’ve been an avid fan since. The cover depicts the lead singer Adam Klopp dressed as a vampire like he did as a child for halloween. Once in an interview Adam said the album is about childhood, death and depression. The album is incredibly rewarding to listen to, full of catchy and unforgettable gems from the great opening track, Two Lips to the title track and Hellmouth. This album is full of gothic dream pop bangers.
