Ballet Moderne : Dance photography is most often made by ex-dancers, a natural progression of what is clearly a short life … their strict training influencing the way they shoot, utterly respectful of ‘correct position’. Despite their original intentions, it interests me how many ballet dancers long to break out of the classical repertoire and seek new challenges. Never a ballerina or a dancer, but as a photographer, attracted to the light falling on anything that moves, I’ve come to appreciate ballet trained bodies being pushed and pulled in different disciplines, with extreme positions requiring maximum flexibility demanded by contemporary choreographers. New music is alive and well and living in modern ballet … appreciated as being independent of each other, existing as separate entities, I feel the same way about pictures and text, that are able to stand alone. Do you recall the balletomanes being outraged at The Bolshoi’s avant-garde production of Romeo & Juliet and Mats Ek’s controversial drug themed Sleeping Beauty? also William Forsythe’s In the Middle Somewhat Elevated with its loud clanking electronic score? … so much negative press followed, but I loved them, and still do.
