Oak grove, spring 2017: A lot has changed in my life since last fall. This walk to the oak grove today was especially beautiful - the wind was cool but there was a tinge of heat scenting the air, a sign of the summer weather to come. There were wildflowers and new leaves creating a burst of green overhead, mirrored in the thick grasses underfoot, rich with tiny wild flowers and moss. And it was also particularly painful. My dad, hiker and nature-lover, passed away earlier this month - he would have loved today. Missing him hits me suddenly like walking into a glass door I hadn't seen until too late. I'm smacked hard with the reality of finality that he's gone. And so. Balance: beauty in nature, pain in nature. It is what it is until it isn't, as my mom says. Oak grove, winter 2016: It's funny/sad how I don't follow my own simple goals of being in nature more. I could go visit this grove every day, it's just three blocks from my house. But, I think I went there only three times over the winter. I photographed some portraits among the snowy trees. Gentle push to myself: go there more often!
