Cultivating relationships with plant spirits 🍃 This was something one of your local tricksters, Robin (he/they), had special difficulty with at first. They tried learning associations from books, but it felt hollow. Even the most potent herbs of witchcraft felt strangely empty when he got them from local witch shops. It wasn’t until your other local trickster, Loki (he/him), taught them about the life of plants that a genuine connection started to form. Robin had only met many of the herbs of witchcraft in their commercial form: dried, ground or chopped, and completely unrecognizable from their original form. Loki taught Robin to begin with the living plant rather than a book. The lessons a plant can teach are in the lessons it learns in its life. What conditions does it thrive in, and what ones stunt its growth? How does it ensure its survival? What habitat does it prefer and why? We bring this philosophy to every work we make; it’s the foundation of both Loki and Robin’s relationship with plant spirits now. The photos above are of a maple tree we came across. It had recently lost a large branch and offered the leaves, seeds, and flowers on it to incorporate into our work. It was the first time Robin had seen the flowers of the Maple and how seeds sprout from them. There’s a special magic in witnessing how a plant grows and we’re so grateful to the Maple for its generosity. If you’re having any trouble connecting with plant spirits, try learning about how they grow. If you’re able, find them in the wild to witness that growth, even if you can’t grow them yourself. Shadowfell is the first in a YA trilogy about an orphan on a perilous journey, a tyrannical king and the fair folk. After the death of her father, Neryn is alone in the land of Alban where an oppressive king has forbidden magic and destroys those who have canny skills. Able to see the fair folk who hint that she may play an important role in Alban's liberation, Neryn seeks out a rumoured rebel group. Along the way she meets a her mysterious companion, Flint, whose loyalties remain unclear. Shadowfell feels like the set up to a much larger story. Neryn is young and inexperienced and spends the book trying to reach Shadowfell whilst evading Enforcers - soldiers who would kill her if they knew about her gift. And so, there is a lot of walking. And I mean a lot. It makes for similar and repetitive plot beats although, being Marillier, it is still charming. Neryn tends to fall on the good girl/saviour spectrum of main characters... maybe almost Mary Sue-ish? But I liked that she was smart and capable, never trusting anyone blindly. There is a subtle hint of romance but with an age difference of around 5 years and Neryn being 15 at the start of this book wasn't something I particularly rooted for. Flint was an interesting character and raised thoughtful questions about whether doing evil things for the greater good is ever justified. After my trip out to gather craft materials yesterday and really feeling in flow and brimming with inspiration I was struck with a fragmented but very vivid dream, in it was a being/character/entity who was quite nebulous, almost as if I couldn’t really perceive them properly, I got very very distinct impressions of regency, power but also of a grace and gentle protectiveness which correspond with the folkloric and magical qualities of Birch along with the vivid mental imagery of a grove of glorious Silver Birch trees. There was an impression of speech. A message? A warning? An invitation? I don’t know as I couldn’t make it out, but curiously I did ‘hear’ it referred to as ‘Lord Birch’ very clearly indeed, curiouser and curiouser as Birch is traditionally seen with a female aspect… I think given that this being was clearly not human, human gender need not strictly apply, and the use of ‘lord’ here could well be simply an honorific, a title rather than a gender designation. So fuelled with this bolt of an idea I had to capture it ‘on paper’ as best I could before it faded! 9 hours of ✨🧠✨ hyper-focus 💁‍♂️, sketching, ruminating, scrapping and sketching again, in true artistic flow, this beautiful concept set of regalia is the result! I love it already and can’t wait to start trying to bring it to life from my mental image to the physical world. It will be a learning curve, a lot of techniques and methods I’ve never attempted before but that’s part of the excitement. The puzzle image is there, the pieces scattered, the method made clear and simple, now to just bring it into being! I love a waterfall 🌊💙 I've always been drawn to water and folklore of creatures that dwell in its depths, particularly mermaids 🧜🏻‍♀️ The falls and small plunge pools felt mystical ✨💦 I could well imagine water nymphs basking in the shallows, playful splashing at the lounging hikers. The falls were cool and clear, a perfect home to Fae and Folkloric beings alike. ✨ There is magic all around us if we look for it. Something about these ferns, framed by the brambles, stirred my witchy heart on today's hike. The natural world is shifting gear again, pulling itself fully into spring as we move towards #Beltaine. It seemed as if the Fae were calling through the woods and across the moorlands. They splashed in the waterfalls, rivers and streams, danced in the dappled light. Today, I went hiking near the River Dane to Three Shires Head with my husband 🥰 We passed through this copse of moss covered trees that felt sacred and full of Fae. I couldn't help but stop and greet some of the trees 😊 The land spirits here are old, indeed.
