Sarfaq Ittuk- When in Greenland, travel the way the INUITs do. For the next leg of our trip, we ditched the usual flight for the coastal ferry - Sarfaq Ittuk. There are no roads connecting towns in Greenland, flights connect only the bigger ones leaving Sarfaq Ittuk as the key link for the 12 settlements along its route. For the smallest ones, it is the only link to the rest of the world. Relatively lower speed and the perspective from a ferry let's the maze of icefjords and thousands of kilometres of changing landscape overwhelm one on board. Even the stops at the harbours enroute are very interesting to watch - with crowds of people waiting to welcome/see off their loved ones. Some of these settlements had population as low as 300. Visiting the house where Agatha Christie lived - a day wandering around the house and spectacular gardens at Greenway, set on a hill overlooking the River Dart. The house and locations around the grounds featured in several of her books. The family were all great collectors and loved to visit salerooms, so there are many unusual items around the house, including a very early 'mobile' phone which they used to communicate with the house when out in the grounds. Taking the tiny ferry from the pontoon at Dittisham - you ring the bell to bring the ferry over - and back again was a lovely bonus. 1. Ferry bell at Dittisham 2. The plunky ferry arrives 3. Our ferry ride from Durres, Albania to Bari, Italy deserves a blog entry on its own. We arrived at the port relatively early and checked in to have a relaxed journey. However, the guard at the toll booth seemed bored and sent us to the random customs inspection. From there on everything was very unorganized and confusing. First we had to wait for 3h to be inspected right next to six officials, drinking coffee and smoking that could have inspected us like ten times using that time. We did not even know for what exactly we were waiting. After some time, more passengers arrived and joined us in this useless procedure. At some point a police car arrived and instructed us to follow them. With emergency lights on all of us, in total five cars, drove through the port, left the port, re-entered the port at a different location. A drive of 15 min. with an unknown destination for us. The only thing we knew is that we were driving in the opposite direction than the ferry. We arrived at an x-Ray scanner to have our cars scanned. After the procedure one of the officials confirmed, that everything was okay and the procedure was over. In the middle of nowhere with noone around, we turned on the navigation system and tried to arrive at the ferry in time. Apparently that was the wrong decision, since the police car was following us at high speed with emergeny lights and horn. The police thought we wanted to flee from the area, since the inteded process was apparently to follow the police back to the ferry. However, arriving back at the ferry we were inspected manually one more time. What a waste of time and what a completely unorganized process. At least the officials were very friendly.
