Writing and… wine?? (Just come along with me for a sec, writers.) You may at some point have heard wine snobs talk about all the many complex flavors they claim they can taste in their wine, like… Blueberries 🫐 Vanilla 🍦 Cheese 🧀 Lavender 💜 Nuts 🥜 Stones 🪨 …and so on. This phenomenon occurs (in part) because wine is a natural product. Wine comes from grapes that grow in natural environments. Each natural environment influences the grapes growing there. This in turn creates flavors and characteristics and smells that typify each wine. You may taste a rich or jam-like or fruity flavor in a glass of wine as a result of where it was grown. Wine carries with it aesthetic evidence of the place from which it came. Mistress M is a word witch; I LOVE words. The word for this—the fact that wine carries and imparts a physical memory of its origin—is terroir. What a cool word. Writers, Mistress M says, have the element of terroir as well. We come from somewhere. As inseparable parts of nature, we were grown somewhere; some fertile soil gave birth to us. And so our writing, our voice, our cadence, the themes that move us, the characters that we’re called to channel—all carry the flavor of where we came from. We and our writing carry the footprint and the weather and the history and the rhythms of the place(s) that made us. 🌄 What is the place that made YOU? As a writer? As a person? 🏞️ What are the qualities of your terroir? What elements of the place that made you do you carry with you? 🌅 What does your writer’s voice sound + feel like? 🏜️ If you could bring with you only one treasure from your place of origin, what would it be? ❤️🖤🤍💚 Keep using your voice, writer. Bloodroot and poetry prompts. The way Bloodroot grows, leaves curled around, holding their own stems. Like tender love. Or maybe like holding yourself tight so you don’t fall apart. I never can decide which it is. But I’m always moved when I stumble upon them. So many poems in the way they grow. I’m sitting with pretty words today and easing out of the chaos, moons, and difficult conversations from this past week. I thought I’d share this prompt I came across that helps me identify what I’m feeling sometimes, along with a couple of examples. Try it out.
