La filosofía suele ser entendida hoy como un ejercicio puramente racional, alejada de todo aquello que tiene que ver con la religión y la espiritualidad. Sin embargo, esto no era así en la antigüedad en la que esta apareció, donde la filosofía estaba íntimamente unida al alma. En ocasiones marcamos también una separación entre Sócrates y todo lo que vino antes de él, categorizando a aquellos pensadores como "presocráticos". Muchas veces utilizando ese término casi de forma despectiva, como si los presocráticos fuesen poco más que magos irracionales. Y lo cierto es que algo de magos sí que tenían, pero desterrando de sí cualquier tipo de idea negativa sobre ese término. El mundo presocrático es el de Heráclito, Parménides y Empédocles, pero también el de corrientes como el del orfismo y el pitagorismo. Ahí nace la filosofía. Pitágoras de Samos (circa 582-502 a. C.) será a quien se atribuya la invención de ese término: «filosofía» (φιλοσοφία). De él se decía que era un gran sabio, que había viajado por todo el mundo para conocer diversas doctrinas y que había desarrollado la idea del alma universal. Es precisamente con Pitágoras que podemos ver cuan errada está esa diferenciación entre los presocráticos y todo lo que vino después. No sólo no existía esa diferencia en el momento histórico, sino que muchos se veían como parte de una misma cadena de transmisión de conocimiento. "Entre los griegos toda teología procede de los misterios órficos. Pitágoras fue el primero en ser instruido por Aglaofamo en lo que respecta a las ceremonias de los dioses. Platón fue el segundo que recibió un conocimiento completo acerca de ellas a partir de libros pitagóricos y órficos" (Proclo, Teología Platónica). Pero, ¿en qué consistían exactamente las doctrinas órfico-pitagóricas? Despite all best efforts, I could not find flights that would reasonably work for me to get to Toronto to see one of the shows in the last stop on the current (Equity) tour of my beloved Hadestown. … I feel so grateful today, though, as @amaya_braganza , @lanajeangordon and @iancoulterbuford went live during their final sound check. Ian stayed live through every check, flight check, the lamps swinging (gave us a view from King Hades’ balcony) and we even got to go inside the elevator that isn’t. Got to hear @uuillmann and @matthewpatrickquinn and even “meet” an Orpheus I’d not had the pleasure of seeing previously. … My heart exploded a million times and at some point I just stopped trying not to cry. Want an amazing gift for which I am so very grateful. Thank you three! … It was during those lives that I spent the entire time searching for flights to Toronto that I could make work in the exactly TWO free days I have in the next two weeks and wouldn’t you know, that was an impossible feat. Well, not impossible, just extremely cost prohibitive. (See? I have limits! I’m not 100% irresponsible when it comes to Broadway.) … I know it seems such a small thing, given the number of times I’ve seen this show and the fact that it’s still running on Broadway and in the UK, but never again seeing these people in these roles just smarts. … Break all the legs, y’all, in this final city. There were a few changes in lyrics that were surprising, but overall it was a positive experience and I can’t wait to see it again. The biggest surprise in my eyes was the resemblance of the UK Orpheus and Eurydice to NYTW-Hadestown- my absolute favourite version. I always imagined myself in that moment, crying of happiness finally seeing HT, but with all the expectations I had, and seeing how it was played out compared to the broadway version I saw snippets off, I was more like “Oh, they changed XYZ, will they change ABC, too?” - anyway, can’t wait to “sing it again” soon. Finishing up materials for the second class of my four part course on all things Orphic for the Theosophical Society of America. Robert McGahey studied with Arthur Evans. In this book he observes that Orpheus seems to return to popularity at times when cultures are moving from Dionysian to Apollonian or visa versa. With so much interest in Orpheus, and new translations, are we moving again from one to the other, and if so are we leaving Dionysian and entering Apollonian, or the other way around? Orpheus would seem to have arisen in the 1960s to herald the return of Dionysus. For example, Cocteau finished his Orpheus trilogy in 1960. Patricia Kennealy-Morrison, Jim Morrison's pagan bride, told me about his deep interest in the Hymns of Orpheus sparked by Nietzsche's The Birth of Tragedy. We'll also be looking at Plato, Orpheus in the Middle Ages, Ficino and the renaissance, Orpheus and Shakespeare, Orpheus in the Confessio and at the court of the Rosicrucians' favorite monarchs, Orpheus and opera, the Orpheus of Mallarme and Rilke, and more. A figure of harmony and balance, Orpheus has inspired much speculation through the years, whether he was real or purely mythical, a Thracian Prince or a shaman. The mystery which surrounds Orpheus also envelops Eurydice, for none know who she truly was, but if Orpheus was a Thracian Prince then it is possible that she was a Princess from a neighbouring kingdom, or that she represents the goddess who responds to the hero, “just like in Thracian antiquity [where] the King, after passing his value trials, could receive the favour of the Great Goddess”. However, from a shamanic point of view, it is possible that Eurydice was a wood nymph, a “spirit-wife”, or a Samodiva. Shamanic elements permeate Orpheus’s story, with his “healing art, his love of music and animals, his “charms” [and] his power of divination” Siberian shamans were also said, by their music, to summon birds and beasts to listen to them. Shamans often journeyed to the lower world, to the underworld, there to commune with the dead and retrieve lost souls. At the close of Orpheus’s life, when he was dismembered by the maenads, again another shamanic motif, his head later served as an oracle, like the head of Mimir in Norse mythology, while in Eastern Siberia the skulls of deceased shamans were enshrined and employed for divination. As Tom Cowan explains in his excellent book Fire in the Head: Shamanism and the Celtic Spirit, “the severed head as a source of truth, wisdom, and healing is a common theme in Celtic culture. In addition to the Welsh tale of Bran, ancient accounts tell of severed heads which, when placed on stone pillars, would talk, sing, and even move around.” . . . More in story . . . MerMay Day 14 Mythology Last week, I was lucky enough to see the touring production of Hadestown, which means that this prompt scratched an itch in my brain. I could have gone two ways with this illustration: Orpheus and Eurydice or Hades and Persephone. Even though the show itself is a tragedy (show me a Greek myth that isn't), Hades and Persephone have a happy ending, so that's the direction I took. I did my best to base my illustration on my memory of the actors in the production I saw since I didn't have a reference from that specific night. Side note: The actor playing Hades had the DEEPEST bass singing voice I think I've ever heard in person. It was intense! Technically speaking, in the scene this is based on, Persephone is wearing a black outfit, but this spring green better represents her character overall, and was her opening and closing outfit. Hades wore boots with SUPER SHINY toes, which I tried to replicate with his fins. Finally, I did my best to replicate the sensation of being in Hadestown by using shades of red and orange to create the watery background.
