A book filled with wonder and adventures written so beautifully it devoured me. The love story is one that always hurts but Elyse made it hurt a thousand times more! I loved seeing glimpses of other popular female mythology characters and seeing how they interacted with Orphia. Experiencing the Muses was another of my favourite aspects of this book and it gave an ethereal vibe that I adored. Having Orphia as a strong independent woman in her own right but still experiencing love and Eurydicius’ softness had me swooning like all romance stories do. I need to share this tonight. There’s lots of myth surrounding Orpheus. Since ancient times, Orpheus has represented the supreme power of poetry and music to enchant all natural things. It was Orpheus the musician who attracted the painter Maurice Denis. Early in his career, Denis associated with a group of artists called Symbolists. Please do google his art!! Anyway, I was recently introduced to a new wine —> Orpheus & The Raven - Eternal Eight. In their story, it is the Raven who helps Orpheus to see the Light again, and once more turn his face towards the sun. How beautiful is that?! QOTD: There were so many releases yesterday, what was one you were excited for?! Death’s Country was released yesterday 🎉 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ R.M. Romero has become an auto-request/auto-buy author for me and I’m so lucky to be approved for her books because her novels in verse are always full of vibes and feels. Death’s Country, as a polyamorous Orpheus and Eurydice retelling, did not lack in atmosphere or emotions. Liora, Renee, and Andres find each other and fall in love, but they each have their own secrets that could damn them in the underworld. Watching the three of them grow in love with each other, but also in acceptance of themselves, was so beautiful and natural. Part of me wished this book wasn’t YA because there were themes that could apply to all ages, but the other part of me saw why this book had to be YA, for 16 is an age when so many teens are figuring out exactly who they want to be and begin to express themselves and defend their expression. While this book has a smaller storyline, it did not lack in plot, so much of the action took place within these characters and I enjoyed that introspection. I especially enjoyed the theme of accepting one’s own darkness, that is truly a favorite trope of mine, as well as the theme of finding acceptance of every aspect of oneself from those we love. While I still think The Ghosts of Rose Hill is my favorite R.M. Romero book thus far, I still put Death’s Country in the five star category. Romero book, start now! their style is unique, effortless, and truly beautiful~ i also can’t resist highlighting another Orpheus + Eurydice retelling that i adored— TO RULE THE DESERT by Monica Robinson, which is a sapphic gothic novella in the American Southwest! Our very short London trip just had to include a visit to one of our favourite musicals. We loved Hadestown on seeing it at the National Theatre back in 2018 so weren't going to miss it in the West End. Anaïs Mitchell's extraordinary folk opera take on the Orpheus and Eurydice Greek myth is a masterpiece, a timeless tale of the human condition. And this version packs a powerful punch, hopeful and heartbreaking, with a magnificent cast.
