After my trip out to gather craft materials yesterday and really feeling in flow and brimming with inspiration I was struck with a fragmented but very vivid dream, in it was a being/character/entity who was quite nebulous, almost as if I couldn’t really perceive them properly, I got very very distinct impressions of regency, power but also of a grace and gentle protectiveness which correspond with the folkloric and magical qualities of Birch along with the vivid mental imagery of a grove of glorious Silver Birch trees. There was an impression of speech. A message? A warning? An invitation? I don’t know as I couldn’t make it out, but curiously I did ‘hear’ it referred to as ‘Lord Birch’ very clearly indeed, curiouser and curiouser as Birch is traditionally seen with a female aspect… I think given that this being was clearly not human, human gender need not strictly apply, and the use of ‘lord’ here could well be simply an honorific, a title rather than a gender designation. So fuelled with this bolt of an idea I had to capture it ‘on paper’ as best I could before it faded! 9 hours of ✨🧠✨ hyper-focus 💁‍♂️, sketching, ruminating, scrapping and sketching again, in true artistic flow, this beautiful concept set of regalia is the result! I love it already and can’t wait to start trying to bring it to life from my mental image to the physical world. It will be a learning curve, a lot of techniques and methods I’ve never attempted before but that’s part of the excitement. The puzzle image is there, the pieces scattered, the method made clear and simple, now to just bring it into being! Making Mycelium Magick on a rainswept Leap Day. I joined an intrepid group as we replanted the world’s biggest faery ring: a perfect circle of 100 bronze mushrooms around the square mile. My sister asked me “can I put this in the playroom or will it attract fairies and things?” She’s had this fairy door for years, and I have always hated it, because although it may seem innocent; it’s a portal. As a friend said “it’s a big f*cking open invitation”. The fair folk aren’t literally going to climb through this door (they’re not tiny little pixies), but they Do love to find a loophole and exploit it. Following on from the shitshow that was the onion post (a post that was supposed to be about responsible spell disposal FYI). I’d like to address the term “The Fae”, and my use of the term. Firstly the term “the Fae” or even “Fairy/Fairies” is considered offensive to them. I have used the term here because it is universally recognised. However when working with them, these aren’t terms that I use. In Scotland we have many names (Scots and Gaelic) for them, which are not considered offensive. In Ireland they have names for them (Irish Gaelic, Scottish Gaelic and Manx are all different and it’s important to use the correct word; (so Irish Gaelic when talking about the Fair folk of Ireland, Scottish Gaelic when talking about the Scottish fair folk))when talking about the Fair folk specific to that country. However, due to literally being spoken over by Americans who have never visited Scotland nor worked with the Scottish Fair folk; and being told that the folklore of my country (folklore that is older than your country) means nothing, and can literally be changed by said Americans; I have decided to stop educating publicly about Scottish folk practice. If people outside Scotland are going to cherry pick and change our folklore and our folk practices (which is cultural appropriation); then this is my effort to preserve the folk practices of my country that have managed to survive despite centuries of colonisation and oppression. Something very interesting happened today. 🤔 today I went to Ben A'an with Mt partner and friends and climbed up this Beautiful hill with stunning views. Whilst on top of the Hill, I proceeded to talk to them about the interesting story of Robert Kirk and his encounters with the Faery Folk alongside his book 'the secret commonwealth of Elves, Fauna and Faeries. I also mentioned his absence for 7 years and his disappearance. When we finally got down to the Hill (all 2 knees intact thankfully!) We drove to the nearby Village. "There was also a legend from the village of St Briavel’s in Gloucestershire concerning cider and fairies. Here, a farmer named John Jones lived in the area. A bad year left him struggling to pay his rent. Selling cider seemed the best way to earn something towards his rent. As soon as he left the house, a man appeared, asking if he was selling cider. Jones said yes, and they settled on a price. The man then gave instructions to take a hogshead of cider up to the Big Meadow. There, he’d find a Fairy Ring, where he should pour the cider onto the grass inside the ring. The man paid and left. Jones thought that was a waste of good cider. Even though he’d been paid for cider, he carried a hogshead of water up to the ring that evening and poured it onto the grass. He stepped out of the ring and came face to face with his buyer—now irate. The man cursed Jones and his family that they would be cursed until they’d lost as much blood as he’d poured water into the ring. At the top of Doon Hill is an old pine tree, said to imprison the soul of Reverend Robert Kirk after revealing secrets about the fairy folk in his book: The Secret Commonwealth. One of the things that I got the sense of, was that although most people don’t believe in elves, faunes and fairies, there was definitely an air of respect towards the tree and what it represented as a doorway to the Fairy world. Being disrespectful towards it could bring about bad luck. Pics 1, 2, 3 are of Robert Kirks final resting place, where people have left offerings, which faces Doon Hill. Pics 5, 6, 7, 8 are of the ancient pine. When I visited it, they had removed most of the offerings, so some people were not able to recognise it from the pictures. It is easy to recognise however, as it is at the top of the hill, on its own, and has its own clearing.
