Pasan demasiadas cosas, se tratan demasiados temas, el conflicto es confuso y no se entiende. Tampoco entiendo como todo el concepto de la comunidad secreta encaja en todo esto, porque parece tirado de los pelos. Lo que más me hizo enojar de todo lo que pasó, (alerta de spoiler) es el romance entre Lyra y Malcolm. *** NEW BOOK REVIEW *** It's been a few days since I finished this book, but burnout prevented me from writing and posting my review. Here it is now! I'm a huge fan of #philippullman, I consider him a great storyteller (by his own definition), I'm in love with Lyra's Oxford. Despite #thegoldencompass, the first book in his trilogy #hisdarkmaterials, remains my favorite among Pullman's books, I did enjoy this prequel, in which Lyra is a defenseless baby and young eleven-year-old Malcolm (with his daemon Asta) becomes her protector, aboard La Belle Sauvage, his inseparable canoe. The next nine squares are all about LYRA, since the new solid is ready and available. The origin story of Lyra began in 2001 as a custom perfume for my daughter Eve. In 2006, I changed the formula to include the fragrance in my line. I settled on the name Lyra, the protagonist in the Phillip Pullman book trilogy His Dark Materials. Siamo alla fine di marzo ed è ora di un nuovo aggiornamento sulle mie attuali letture! Io sono una lettrice che in genere legge più libri contemporaneamente. In questo momento ho iniziato #direzionelavita, un bel libro MM (il primo di tre) di @laurawordsofficial e già mi piace moltissimo il suo stile. Apprezzo molto anche la tematica della disabilità e della depressione, che sta affrontando in maniera davvero convincente, e lo stile per nulla affettato o cliché. A proposito, i tre ebook di Laura sono in offerta a 0,99 fino al 10 aprile! Non perdeteli!! Grazie allo stimolo offerto da un post di qualche giorno fa da @andretta.baldanza.autrice sulla serie di Cormoran Strike di #robertgalbraith (aka J.K. Rowling), ho ricordato di essere rimasta indietro con questa serie. Così ho ripreso la lettura del volume che avevo iniziato prima di intraprendere la mia avventura editoriale e che avevo messo da parte solo perché nel frattempo sono accadute tante cose (soprattutto collaborazioni). Si tratta di #troubledblood (in italiano Sangue inquieto). Per ora mi sta piacendo molto, ma sono solo all'inizio del solito tomazzo. Nel contempo, ho iniziato anche il fantasy #nicholaseternal, per il gruppo di lettura @indieboomtown. Ne parlerò quando sarò un po' più avanti. Restano in attesa il giallo La palude di #charlottelink, autrice tedesca che adoro (mi piacerebbe leggerlo in lingua originale, ma non sono ancora all'altezza) e #thesecretcommonwealth di #philippullman, uno dei miei autori di riferimento per i miei stessi libri. It's the follow-up books to the Golden Compass series. Book 1 - The Book of Dust is actually a prequel to the Golden Compass and might be the first time I've enjoyed a prequel. Book 2 - The Secret Commonwealth was fantastic and set 10 years after the Golden Compass so they are adults now. The Good People travel much abroad, either presaging or aping the dismal and tragical actions of some among us. As birds and beasts, whose bodies are much used to the change of the free and open air, foresee storms, so our airy darlings are more sagacious to understand, by the Books of Nature, things to come than we, who are pestered with the grosser dregs of all elementary mixtures, and have our purer spirits choked by them. In the next country to that of my former residence, about the year 1676, when there was some scarcity of grain, a marvelous vision strongly struck the imagination of two women in one night, living at a good distance from one another, about a treasure hid in a hill called SITHBHRUAICH, or fairy-hill. The appearance of a treasure was first represented to the fancy, and then an audible voice named the place where it was to their awakening senses. Whereupon both arose, and meeting accidently at the place, discovered their design; and jointly digging, found a vessel as large as a Scottish peck, full of small pieces of good money, of ancient coin; which halving betwixt them they sold in dishfuls for dishfuls of meal to the country people. When werewolves’ and witches’ true bodies are (by the union of the spirit of nature that runs though all, echoing and doubling the blow towards another) wounded at home, their astral, assumed bodies are stricken elsewhere— as the strings of a second harp tune to a unison, though only one be struck. By contrast, the Good People have not a second, material body to be so pierced; but are as air, which, when divided, unites again. They are a people invulnerable to our weapons. Or if they feel pain by a blow, they are better physicians than we, and quickly cure it. Their weapons are most like solid earthly bodies: nothing of iron but much like stone, like yellow, soft flint shaped like a barbed arrowhead, flung like a dart with great force. These arms (cut by art and tools it seems beyond human) have somewhat the nature of a thunderbolt: subtly and mortally wounding the vital parts without breaking the skin, of which wounds I have observed in beasts and felt with my own hands. They are not infallible, hitting at a hairsbreadth; nor are they wholly unvanquishable. Those who are unseen or unsanctified (called fey) are said to be pierced or wounded with those people’s weapons, which makes them do things very unlike their former practice, causing a sudden alteration, yet the cause thereof unperceivable at present. They also pierce cows or other animals, usually said to be elf-shot, whose purest substance (if they die) these subterraneans take to live on for prolonging of life, leaving the terrestrial behind. The cure of such hurts is only for a man to find out the hole with his finger, as if the spirits flowing from a man’s warm hand were antidote sufficient against their poisoned darts.

Others take on different shapes, and enter into any cranny or cleft in the earth, where air enters, to their ordinary dwellings. When the countries were uninhabited by us, the Good People had their easy tillage above ground, as we do now. The prints of those furrows still remain to be seen on the shoulders of very high hills, made when the champaign ground was wood and forest. They live much longer than we; yet die at last, or least vanish from this state. ’Tis one of their tenets, that nothing perisheth, but (as the sun and year) every thing goes in a circle, lesser or greater, and is renewed and refreshed in its revolutions;— as ’tis another, that everybody in the creation moves, (which is a sort of life) and that nothing moves, but has another animal moving on it; and so on, to the utmost minutest corpuscle that’s capable to be a receptacle of life. These subterraneans are distributed in tribes and orders, and have children; nurses; marriages; deaths; and burials, seemingly just as we do. They have controversies; doubts; disputes; feuds; and siding of parties— there being some ignorance in all creatures, and the vastest created intelligences not encompassing all things. They are said to have aristocratical rulers and laws, but no discernible religion or devotion towards God, the blessed maker of all: they disappear whenever they hear his name invoked, or the name of Jesus. Yet they do not all the harm which apparently they have the power to do. They are said to have many pleasant, toyish books. Other books they have of involved, abstruse sense, much like the Rosicrucian style. They have nothing of the bible, save collected parcels for charms and counter charms; not to defend themselves, but to operate on other animals.

The Good People are said to be of a middle nature between man and angel: intelligent, studious spirits with light, changeable bodies, somewhat like a condensed cloud, and best seen in twilight. Their bodies are so pliable, they can appear or disappear at will. Some have bodies so spongeous, thin, and delicate that they are fed only by sucking into some fine spirituous liquors that pierce like pure air and oil. At such revolutions of time, men of the second sight have encounters with them, especially on highways. These seers therefore usually shun to travel abroad at the four seasons of the year, and have made it a custom to this day among the Scottish-Irish to keep Church duly every first Sunday of the quarter to sain, and to hallow themselves, their corns and their cattle, from the shots and stealth of these wandering tribes. Many of these superstitious people will not be seen in church again till the next quarter begin, as if no duty were to be learned or done by them, but all the use of worship and sermons were to save them from these arrows that fly in the Dark. We (the more terrestrial kind who have now so numerously planted all countries) do labour for these abstruse people, as much as we do for ourselves.

I for one am fairly proud of this end of month result, considering Debt of Time was over 3000 pages long and The Secret Commonwealth was 700+ pages long. I received a TBR jar with my illuminate box in December which I absolutely love. I've been putting in books that are on my shelf and my kindle that have been gathering dust. I expect 2024 reads will be a little random as a result but I'm here for it. The Secret Commonwealth by #philippullman📘 This has taken me the longest time to finish! I love Pullman's writing style and turn of phrase but I struggled so much with the drastic personality change in Lyra and Pantalaimon. I also wasn't a massive fan of the budding romance between Malcolm and Lyra. I don't know, I'm very torn about this one. There was one scene which was very upsetting and difficult to read. What I can say is that it's a typical middle book, a filler and build up to a dramatic finale. I hope Philip Pullman delivers, or I will be heart broken. I think these were my top 5 non-work reads of 2023 although I have redrafted this a lot. I read 49 books, of which 21 were books for work, and 14 books to my children (including all the Potters which was an absolute joy.) Next year: read more, scroll less. Count the TBR and make a plan for it. Reread the Cromwell trilogy with @footnotes.and.tangents. Monthly recap! How many books read: 6 Average rating: 4,16 (3 five star, 1 four star and 2 three star reads) Favourite book: Fourth wing. I definitely get the hype, I read it in less than 24 hours and just loved it. Also honorable mention for the prison healer series, an amazing series I discovered past month and I loved it. Least Favourite book: La belle sauvage by Philip Pullman. I'm really sad about this, because His Dark Materials is an awesome series and I was so disappointed in the Book of dust part 1 and 2. Part 2 was slightly better but both got 3 stars. Review can be found in the post before this one Notes: This was a meh month. Not only did I read less than I normally do, the last 3 books were not as great as I expected/hoped them to be. Also I've had so little energy the last month that I barely posted here, even though I have many ideas and things I can post. Hopefully next month will be a little bit better, both in terms of reading (quality and quantity) and in terms of posting. Notes on next month: I really don't know what December will bring me reading wise. I had hopes of making it to 104 books this year but I doubt it's gonna happen, because that means I should read 17 books this month. So I'll just read what I want and I think I'll end this year with around 95 books read. I'm celebrating a Dutch holiday (sinterklaas) and Christmas and I have obviously asked for books, so depending on if/what I'm gonna get I may read those books first, so I have no idea what I'm going to be reading this month. Also like I said in the last part I'm hoping to make more content, because I do notice that I read more when I post more. I've made monthly recaps for the first few months of the year (before I started this account) and am planning on posting those in my stories, but I noticed how much more I started reading after I started my Booksta. 📖 Avis de lecture 📖 🍁🍂 Pumpkin Autumn Challenge 🍂🍁 ⚠️ Spoilers . Hello tout le monde ! . J'ai lu le tome 2 de la trilogie de la poussière, La communauté de l'esprit (the Secret Commonwealth en VO) de Philip Pullman paru chez @dfb_storyhouse . J'avais bien aimé le tome 1 et A la croisée des mondes donc je partais confiante. Mais j'ai été vraiment déçue par cette suite, et ce pour plusieurs raisons. . Déjà, la relation entre Lyra et Pantalaimon. Ils se détestent ! Alors, certes, les événements de la trilogie précédente avait altéré leur lien, mais on les avait laissés en cours de réconciliation. Mais ici, ils sont tellement froids l'un envers l'autre. Je peux comprendre que l'auteur ait eu besoin de faire évoluer leur relation comme ça parce que c'est le départ de Pan qui lance toute l'aventure. Mais ça m'a gênée. . Ensuite, il y a l'intrigue. Elle tourne autour du voyage de Lyra pour retrouver Pan, et je trouve cela peu crédible. Genre "zut, Pantalaimon a disparu, je vais traverser l'Europe pour aller dans cet endroit mystérieux où vivent les daemons qui sont tous seuls et il sera là-bas"... Pourquoi ? Qu'est-ce qu'elle en sait ? Alors qu'elle n'a même pas compris pourquoi Pan était parti. . Une autre part de l'intrigue tourne autour d'une histoire d'eau de rose dont la production est en danger et ça a l'air grave. Mais, je pense que je suis passée à côté de quelque chose parce que je n'ai pas compris en quoi c'était si important. . Autre chose que je n'ai pas bien saisi, c'est cette histoire de secret commonwealth. C'est le titre du livre mais j'ai eu l'impression qu'on ne faisait qu'effleurer la question. Là encore, j'ai dû passer à côté d'un truc. . Autre difficulté, la langue. Je l'ai lu en VO et je pense que la barrière de la langue a pu m'empêcher de saisir la véritable essence de cette histoire et peut être que c'est pour ça que je n'ai pas tout compris. . If I’d been a proper Instagrammer I would have prepared before blithely crashing on with this post but that’s not how I roll. It’s taken me quite a while to read this book. I took a few weeks off in the middle, mostly because I was tired rather than because I wasn’t enjoying the book. I enjoyed this immensely. Much more than the Amber Spyglass. It’s an odd thing this story. I understand now how it ties up with book one of the series that was set before the exploits of His Dark Materials. This book is set afterwards and follows an older Lyra and her new adventures. Adventures makes it sound fun. It’s quite dark in some of the themes that it’s dealing with. That makes it an interesting read for an older reader like me while the language used is still very accessible. The only negative for me is that the religious allegory is far too upfront and can feel a little patronising but that’s a tiny complaint. Q: Have you read His Dark Materials? 🪄🪄🪄 Northern Lights by Philip Pullman was one of the staple books of my childhood. I remember rereading the trilogy over and over in my childhood bedroom. So of course when the Book of Dust novels came out I needed to grab them. And I'm still impatiently waiting for the third and final one! Talking about right and wrong, good and bad, life and death. I particularly loved reading about Lyra and Will's foray into death and how Pullman chose to represent that. [📚AVIS LIVRESQUE 📚] Au mois de septembre, je me suis fait un marathon His Dark materials, et dans la foulée, j'ai enfin lu le séquel d'À la Croisée des Mondes : La Communauté des Esprits de Philip Pullman. 📚 J'étais très contente de retrouver le personnage de Lyra et de Pantalaimon, ainsi que l'univers. J'ai retrouvé ce que j'avais beaucoup aimé dans la première trilogie : l'aventure et le voyage. Par contre, Lyra a bien changé. Ce n'est plus la petite fille aventureuse, curieuse et tête brûlée que l'on connait, mais une jeune femme pragmatique, prudente et assez réservée. C'est assez déstabilisant. L'ambiance du roman est du coup beaucoup plus sombre et adulte que dans la première trilogie. Je me suis d'ailleurs demandée plusieurs fois si cette saga avait encore sa place chez des éditions folio junior, car les thèmes sont bien matures pour des gosses de 10 ans, et certaines scènes bien violentes (presque gratuites d'ailleurs...). 📚 Le rythme m'a également déstabilisé. J'ai trouvé ça très lent comme récit. Il se passe des choses, mais l'intrigue principale n'avance pas. Toutes les aventures que vit Lyra ne m'a pas semblé très utiles pour la suite de sa quête. Et le livre se termine de façon très abrupte. Alors, probablement que la suite va être beaucoup plus dynamique et excitante, mais ce tome me laisse perplexe. 😶 ✨Et vous, qu'en avez-vous pensé ? Jeg har læst de 4 noveller som foregår i samme univers som #hisdarkmaterials serien, eller #detgyldnekompas på dansk. Min ærlige mening? De er totalt meget fanservice og jeg gav hver og én af dem 5 stjerner for jeg er en sucker for det her univers 🤷🏼‍♀️😂🙈 Har du lyst til at læse dem, så gør det EFTER du har læst den oprindelige trilogi, da de alle giver mere mening sådan, selvom 2 af dem står til at foregå før seriens første bind. Jeg prøver at knytte et par til hver bog: Once Upon a Time in the North (0.5): Denne var klart den med mest substans i sig, med sine cirka 100 sider. Den handler om Lee Scoresby og Ioreks første møde, enough said ❤️ The Collectors (0.6): Den her tog det mig lige lidt tid at komme ind i, for den udspiller sig som en samtale mellem 2 karakterer jeg ikke kender. Men den udviklede sig til at være super creepy og overraskende fascinerende! Lyra's Oxford (3.5): Vores første møde med Lyra efter den oprindelige trilogi, og det er et vemodigt gensyn. Selvom trilogien afrundede historien om Will og Lyra, så åbner denne op for nye aspekter. Serpentine (3.6): Fortsætter i samme spor som Lyra's Oxford, men twister lige kniven lidt ekstra. Denne historie er også en samtale, men mellem Lyra og en karakter vi kender fra serien. Historien er optakten til det centrale problem i The Secret Commonwealth. Jeg kan ikke engang sige om jeg har en favorit. De ramte mig alle forskelligt og gjorde både godt og ondt. Jeg vil ikke sige de sidste 2 giver mig decideret lyst til at genlæse The Secret Commonwealth igen, for den bog slog mig i stykker og jeg leder stadig efter resterne. Men de gav et klarere perspektiv på historien, og det værdsætter jeg altid. Men jeg læser først TSC igen, når jeg har udgivelsesdato for den sidste bog i serien, og ikke et sekund før 💔💔💔❤️‍🩹

This is my set of the UK first editions of the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. Published 1995-2000 by Scholastic/David Fickling. Each volume is signed directly on the title page by Pullman. The success of the first book, Northern Lights (1995) wasn’t anticipated, so it is the rarest book in the set. This copy is a first impression in a first state dustjacket with POINT on the spine panel and the publisher’s Pratt Street address on the rear flap. It has the Carnegie Medal sticker to the front panel. The Subtle Knife (1997) and The Amber Spyglass (2000) are both first impressions and signed. The set is in fine condition. Philip Pullman has returned to the universe of this trilogy with the Book of Dust series. The third Book of Dust instalment will, hopefully, be published soon. Có nhiều bạn hỏi Wings Books khi nào thì xuất bản tập 3 của series BỤI KÍ, thì thật đáng tiếc là hiện tập 3 vẫn chưa được nhà văn Philip Pullman hoàn thành, tức là bản gốc tiếng Anh hiện vẫn chưa được phát hành. Vào tháng 7/2022, Philip Pullman nói rằng đã viết xong 235 trang của tập 3, và có lẽ chúng ta sẽ sớm được thấy sách tập 3 được xuất bản thôi. Hiện nhan đề của tập 3 vẫn chưa được công bố, nhưng trong một bài báo, Philip Pullman có hé lộ rằng sẽ là một cái tên liên quan đến "hoa hồng". Chi tiết "hoa hồng" này đã được nhắc đến ở tập 2 của series BỤI KÍ - Khối Cộng Đồng Bí Mật, khi những nhà khoa học đang theo đuổi hoa hồng chứ không phải vàng ở vùng sa mạc. Tinh dầu hoa hồng trở nên quý giá và khan hiếm trước các tác dụng kì diệu khiến các nhà khoa học đứng ngồi không yên. Cuối tập 2 là khi Lyra dấn thân vào hành trình đi tìm quý giá với mình, và Malcolm đi tìm bí mật nằm gọn giữa sa mạc. Những gì họ khám phá và tìm thấy sẽ được hé mở ở tập 3 sắp tới. I made a re-writing plan, and now I’m on it! Reviewed query letter with my peeps, that’s all set. I’m in the home stretch. Art by @sylvia_strijk_art Book by 17th century Scottish clergyman Robert Kirk, who wrote this seminal work after interviewing those of his parishioners who had the Sight, and could tell him about faeries. Soon after completing the book, Kirk was found, incoherent and wandering on a faerie hill in his nightshirt, and he died that day. Some say he was taken by the fae.
