Back in February 2009, an ordinary trip to a museum shop turned into a serendipitous moment that shaped my future. Today as we celebrate mothers, I would like to take a step back and celebrate all hearts that nurture. Motherhood can be a source of joy or despair, or a thousand feelings in between. For those who cannot conceive, or who choose not to, Mother’s Day can be anything but a day of celebrating. But the nurturing heart of a woman should be celebrated, no matter where it affects her world. God is a nurturer. He initiates relationship, He moves into our pain and carries our sorrows. He brings comfort, counsel and understanding. He brings Himself. He makes His heart vulnerable to ours. And there is a huge deposit of this attribute of God in the hearts of women. Being a nurturer is costly. It takes time and resources, and it makes your heart vulnerable to another’s pain. As you step into nurturing roles, you are not guaranteed a happy outcome. You may never even know the outcome. It requires strength and courage. You will have to lean on the Lord for wise boundaries. Nurturing may look like giving a hug and an encouraging word to a stranger whom you will never see again. It may look like opening your heart and home to the friends your kids hang out with. It may look like a long-term commitment to foster or adopt. It may look like taking younger women under your wing and encouraging their hearts. Or it may look like a complete role reversal as you care for an aging parent. Being a nurturer is seldom easy, but it also brings great joy and satisfaction. Whatever it looks like for you, I celebrate you as a nurturer! SOUND ON! A short clip (3:51) of my Dark Matter video which is an adaptation from my artist book. I’m excited to finally share an experimental moving image video I made for my book, Dark Matter. I originally created this video in 2022 for the book release event visualstudiesworkshop. The video uses experimental techniques to animate images from the book along with recorded footage. I recorded myself reading all of the poetry/text from the book to construct a loose narrative about origins of the universe, selfhood, and life and death. When our location because available for rent, I knew the unused garage was a perfect opportunity for Justin to be able to fulfill his dream. Maggie is the most beloved name in the world to me because it belongs to the woman who is the heart and soul of my journey. My mother has always been my unwavering support, working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure my success. When I took her to the Preservation Society Shop in Charleston and she saw our jams on the shelves, the pride in her eyes was immeasurable. Seeing that moment made me realize just how instrumental she's been to everything I've achieved. Maggie got married and had me young, yet she never let that deter her. Instead, she used her strength and resourcefulness to support our family in countless ways. Whether it was saving money for my expensive photography gear or moving in with me to help raise my children when I owned a bakery, she was always there for me. When she visits, she continues to show her love and support by cooking meals, doing laundry, watching the children, taking them to school, and even helping with yard work. Her hands touch every aspect of my life, bringing comfort and ease. Although she doesn't live close by, I feel her presence every day, and I miss her deeply. As Mother's Day approaches, I want to honor the remarkable woman who taught me resilience, compassion, and perseverance. Maggie is the backbone of our family, and her sacrifices and love are the foundation of everything I am today. ALIVE IN THE AMAZON * THE GIANT WATERLILY Victoria amazonica is a species of flowering plant, the second largest in the water lily family Nymphaeaceae. It is called uape jacana (“the lilytrotter’s waterlily”) in Brazil and Atun Sisac (“great flower”) in Inca (Quechua). Its native region is tropical South America, specifically Guyana and the Amazon Basin. Per the legend of the Tupi-Guarani people of Brazil, believed that the moon was the goddess Jaci, who came at night and kissed and lit up the faces of the most beautiful virgins in the village, the cunhantãs-moças. When the moon hid behind the mountain, she would take girls with her and turn them into stars A beautiful virgin named Naiá dreamed of becoming a star, despite warnings that girls taken by Jaci lost their blood and flesh in becoming stars. Naiá roamed the mountains seeking out the moon each night, so obsessed she did not sleep or eat. While resting on the edge of the lake, she saw the moon’s reflection on the water, and desperately seeking the goddess, dove into the water and drowned. To reward her for this sacrifice and overcome her loss, Jaci turned her into a star different from all the others, the “star of the waters”, which is the giant water lily. A number of versions of the legend exist, based on a girl attempting to unite with the moon. The species’ flowers are short-lived and last about 48 hours, appearing as white when it opens, initially as female. The sweet scent they emit attracts beetles which carry pollen from other plants. After the transfer of the pollen, the flower shuts as fertilization takes place to trap the beetles inside. When the flower opens the next evening, after transforming to mature male during the day, the beetles fly to a different white flower. It reminds me of Marvel MAX books like Deadpool ten years ago, mixing just enough humor with over the top violence to give readers exactly what they wanted, and still want! This Vault Comic has been going for a few series now, but this is a perfect issue to start as it’s the origin of the main character Owen! Owen has a talking mystical battle axe that craves blood, usually more than Owen can give him.
