In this month's @womensweeklymag, SCAD heart attack survivor Jen O'Neill shares her experience and how not looking like the stereotypical heart attack patient can delay and impact diagnosis. Unfortunately it's a story that we hear far too often, despite the devastating statistics around women's heart care in Australia. 😔 It's so important that you know the signs and symptoms of a heart attack, and seek urgent treatment regardless of your age, fitness level or risk factors ❤️ . . . . #womensissues #womensissue #womenshearts #womenshealth #endgenderbias #womensheartattacks #herheart #womensheartattack #scadstory #genderbias #womenshealthcare #genderpaingap #sydneymums #brisbanemums #melbournemums #adelaidemums #hobartmums #perthmums #darwinmums #canberramums #aussiemums

Heart disease is the number one killer of women, and no matter how strong and well you guess your heart is right now, this is the disease most likely to end your life, or sap your vitality so that your future years will be more about disability and pain than joy and contentment. #hearthealth #hearthealthy #foodfortheheart #doctor #author #cardiologist #goredforwomen #womenincardiology #heart #heartdisease #livefromtheheart #wellbeing #lifechoices #womenshearts

I wrote this book because this is the book I want to read. This is the hand that I wish was holding mine, and the voice that I wish had spoken to me when I was younger. This book is the voice of your future, looking back and saying, “Be careful what you do…” This is the voice saying, “I’ve seen what’s coming for you, and you want to take a different road. You’re on a collision course. Take this exit.” @meghanrabbitt #hearthealth #hearthealthy #foodfortheheart #doctor #author #cardiologist #goredforwomen #womenincardiology #heart #heartdisease #livefromtheheart #wellbeing #lifechoices #womenshearts

Living from the heart feels much different from living in the head. When you live from your heart, you feel at peace, at ease, in control of yourself because of a deep inner knowing. You lead with love. You relax because you know that everything is going to be o.k. You learn how to care for yourself and love yourself the same way you love and care for your own child. Living from the heart coaxes your body back into balance. #hearthealth #hearthealthy #foodfortheheart #doctor #author #cardiologist #goredforwomen #womenincardiology #heart #heartdisease #livefromtheheart #wellbeing #lifechoices #womenshearts

Nineteen people in my family are doctors. But we’re not just doctors. We are doctors of osteopathic medicine, with the medical degree D.O. Doctors of osteopathy can prescribe medications, perform surgery, and use all the technology an M.D. can use, but the focus is very different—it is a very hands-on, personal way of doctoring that champions health promotion and disease prevention, rather than just treating symptoms or managing diseases. It is true holistic care. @american_heart and @goredforwomen event photo credit #hearthealth #hearthealthy #foodfortheheart #doctor #author #cardiologist #goredforwomen #womenincardiology #heart #heartdisease #livefromtheheart #wellbeing #lifechoices #womenshearts

7 years 🩺♥️ Once upon a time, on a avergae morning in Sydney, a 25 year old girl went in to see a cardiologist to check if there might be something a little funny happening with her heart. That same day, leaving the appointment, she closed the door to her car and, in the driver's seat, sat crying in disbelief. In the doctors chair, she had sat dumbfounded as she was delivered news that would dramatically change her life... 'You'll be lucky to live to see your 30th birthday', 'do NOT fall pregnant, your heart will not survive', 'this requires immediate intervention, open heart surgery, and valve replacements'. In the same appointment, options were spoken of and appointmens made... pig tissue? Mechanical? Warfarin? Donor? 4 months later, in the cold and drizzly Epworth hospital in Melbourne, she was rolled on a bed into theatre, terrified. Counting to ten, she closed her eyes.... For 8 hours, her heart was stopped, her chest was sawn opened, and her aortic and pulmonary valves were carefully cut away, changed, and sewn on anew. In ICU, she woke with a tube down her throat, unable to speak or move. She was stiff and sore. Machines beeping and wires attached everywhere; In her neck, arms, chest. Tubes attached internally draining fluid from inside her chest cavity, wires attached to her heart. She saw the relieved and warm smiling faces of her mum, dad, and husband and fell back to sleep. ----- Hellllllllo 🥰🥰 If you've come this far! I'm pleased to share that this is a happy story, but an important one. I'm Suzie 👋 that's me in the pictures👆 At 33 years old now, I've officially outlived my pre-op life expectancy. I have grown birthed, loved, and nourished my two beautiful healthy children and live a life I could have only dreamed of before I walked into that cardiologist office 7 years ago. Why share my story? Because Heart disease is the second biggest killer of women in Australia, behind Dementia including Alzheimer’s disease and yet, most of what is known about the symptoms relates to men. The disease is largely under-diagnosed, under-treated, and under-researched in women. Continued in comments 👇

When you live in your head, you feel disconnected from your environment and your relationships, always talking, talking, talking to yourself. You forget to live in the moment. You get stressed, you don’t sleep well, you may binge eat or not eat at all. You gain weight in all the wrong places and before you know what hit you (because you aren’t paying attention to your own needs), you are a miserable physical mess. #hearthealth #hearthealthy #foodfortheheart #doctor #author #cardiologist #goredforwomen #womenincardiology #heart #heartdisease #livefromtheheart #wellbeing #lifechoices #womenshearts

Today as we celebrate mothers, I would like to take a step back and celebrate all hearts that nurture. Motherhood can be a source of joy or despair, or a thousand feelings in between. For those who cannot conceive, or who choose not to, Mother’s Day can be anything but a day of celebrating. But the nurturing heart of a woman should be celebrated, no matter where it affects her world. God is a nurturer. He initiates relationship, He moves into our pain and carries our sorrows. He brings comfort, counsel and understanding. He brings Himself. He makes His heart vulnerable to ours. And there is a huge deposit of this attribute of God in the hearts of women. Being a nurturer is costly. It takes time and resources, and it makes your heart vulnerable to another’s pain. As you step into nurturing roles, you are not guaranteed a happy outcome. You may never even know the outcome. It requires strength and courage. You will have to lean on the Lord for wise boundaries. Nurturing may look like giving a hug and an encouraging word to a stranger whom you will never see again. It may look like opening your heart and home to the friends your kids hang out with. It may look like a long-term commitment to foster or adopt. It may look like taking younger women under your wing and encouraging their hearts. Or it may look like a complete role reversal as you care for an aging parent. Being a nurturer is seldom easy, but it also brings great joy and satisfaction. Whatever it looks like for you, I celebrate you as a nurturer! May you experience more and more of God’s heart, and bring more and more of it into your world. #WomensMinistry #HealingHearts #WomensBibleStudies #BibleStudies #WomensHearts #ChristianWomen #BrokenHearts #WoundedHearts #Redemption #WomensIdentity #NewLife #Forgiveness #WholeheartedWomen #WholeheartedWoman #Comfort #WholeheartedWomanBook #Grace #Identity #Motherhood #OriginStory #Abortion #WholeHearts #Hope #JesusHeals #FreedomMinistry #EncourageWomen #ThirstyHearts #Forgiveness #InnerHealing #Freedom

Most of us work very hard at protecting at least a part of our hearts —some more, some less, depending on how they have been injured and deceived. It is an uncomfortable commentary on the world that it has proven to be so unsafe for human hearts. But the world itself is not the problem. Jesus put us here on purpose, and He told us the world is corrupt. His plan for restoration in this world is for our hearts to be healed and transformed so they can bring His love and truth to hearts that are still broken. Redemption, restoration, transformation — one heart at a time, right in the middle of this corrupt world. A heart must dare to come out of hiding and let it be touched by Jesus — a touch that will bring both comfort and challenge. He knows all those inner pains, and He waits for you to open your heart to Him. He invites you into a process of healing that will include forgiving those who have abused you, repenting of ungodly judgments and responses that have made you an abuser as well, and choosing to live according to His purposes and designs. This can happen only in the context of His love, grace, and a community of believers who are walking together in transformation. For those broken parts that are in hiding, He works healing and transformation. And the same strategies that bring healing will guard our hearts in the middle of future trials: being quick to forgive, loving unconditionally, giving and receiving grace, repenting quickly and joyfully, and resting secure in an identity that comes from the heart of God and is not threatened by what others think. Then your heart can be a light for other hearts that are hiding in the dark. #WomensMinistry #HealingHearts #WomensBibleStudies #BibleStudies #WomensHearts #ChristianWomen #BrokenHearts #WoundedHearts #Redemption #WomensIdentity #NewLife #Forgiveness #WholeheartedWomen #WholeheartedWoman #Comfort #WholeheartedWomanBook #Grace #Identity #Motherhood #OriginStory #Abortion #WholeHearts #Hope #JesusHeals #FreedomMinistry #EncourageWomen #ThirstyHearts #Forgiveness #InnerHealing #Freedom

We cry for fairness from a very young age. A two-year-old sees that her older sister gets to stay up later, and it’s not fair. Your brother gets a bigger cookie than you, and it’s not fair. A friend’s parents buy her a car for her 16th birthday, and you’ve been babysitting for years to save up for one — and it’s not fair. Your husband leaves the table and heads straight for the TV while you clean up the kitchen, and it’s not fair. Let’s stop and consider how God treats us. He offers us His righteousness in exchange for our sin. That’s not a fair trade. [2 Corinthians 5:20] We can trade our ashes for His beauty; our sadness for His joy; our dull, lifeless robes for glorious garments of praise. That’s not a fair trade. [Isaiah 61:3] A prodigal son comes home to a father who welcomes him home and throws him a party, and the older son says it’s not fair. [Luke 15:11-32] Our Father welcomes us home when we don’t deserve it. We have His undeserved favor. And still we tend to compare and pout and shout “Foul!” Our hearts will have so much more peace when they mirror the Father’s heart. Stop comparing, give lavishly, forgive freely, rejoice in that other person’s blessings. Father, we long to have hearts free of comparison and entitlement. We have received freely; help us to give freely. #WomensMinistry #HealingHearts #WomensBibleStudies #BibleStudies #WomensHearts #ChristianWomen #BrokenHearts #WoundedHearts #Redemption #WomensIdentity #NewLife #Forgiveness #WholeheartedWomen #WholeheartedWoman #Comfort #WholeheartedWomanBook #Grace #Identity #Motherhood #OriginStory #Abortion #WholeHearts #Hope #JesusHeals #FreedomMinistry #EncourageWomen #ThirstyHearts #Forgiveness #InnerHealing #Freedom

We are all familiar with the famous verse from 1st Corintihans 13:13 — “And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” Faith, hope, and love represent the three core needs of our hearts. Why is love the greatest of these? Because love is the greatest of your needs. Before you can have faith, before you can have hope, your heart must know love. It was created for love. The primal cry of your heart is to be loved, because the Lover of your soul created your heart for a love relationship with Him. This world does not love you. The love of your best friend, or your significant other, or a family member, WILL fail. The “greatest” thing spoken of here is the unearned, unfailing, unconditional love of your eternal Father. Can you take some time today to just let your heart be loved? No striving, no earning, no fretting; just time to surrender yourself — and the things your heart cares about — to the love of Jesus? The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. [Lamentations 3:22-23] Love never fails. Do you feel like you’re swimming upstream in your heart journey? Well, that’s not just a feeling; it’s a fact. Choosing to forgive? To turn the other cheek? To consider others better than ourselves? To bless our enemies? To follow Jesus into dying to ourselves for the sake of others? Are you kidding me? Definitely a difficult journey against the world’s agenda and my own selfish desires. Some would peddle the gospel with a give-your-heart-to-Jesus-and-life-will-be-easy subtitle. No such message exists in God’s word. The promise is that you will never be alone, and that the high cost of discipleship is worth it. Any other path will leave your heart disconnected from its only source of hope, identity, and purpose. If you are tired and discouraged, it’s OK to find some needed time to get out of the current and rest in God’s arms. But remember that His arms never let go of you, even in the middle of those white-water rapids. And the journey is worth it. Father, we need Your grace to stay in this battle until our hearts become like yours. Come and fill us again! “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.” [1 Peter 4:12] “Whenever you face various trials, consider it all joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance complete its work, so that you may be complete and whole, lacking in nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given to you.” [James 1:2-5] #WomensMinistry #HealingHearts #WomensBibleStudies #BibleStudies #WomensHearts #ChristianWomen #BrokenHearts #WoundedHearts #Redemption #WomensIdentity #NewLife #Forgiveness #WholeheartedWomen #WholeheartedWoman #Comfort #WholeheartedWomanBook #Grace #Identity #Motherhood #OriginStory #Abortion #WholeHearts #Hope #JesusHeals #FreedomMinistry #EncourageWomen #ThirstyHearts #Forgiveness #InnerHealing #Freedom

When you breathe deeply, you send a message to your body that everything is OK. It stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system associated with calmness and resting. Shallow fast breathing, on the other hand, signals an emergency, sending your body into high-stress mode. So at the first sign of an anxiety attack, take in a deep breath to the slow count of four, in through the nose. Hold it for four counts, then let it out vigorously with a loud shhh noise for six counts. After you’ve exhaled, hold for another four counts. Repeat this a few times.

4/24/2024, 4:00:33 PM

Your heart was made for eternity, but it is shaped by now. The admonition to care for our hearts “above all else” does not mean we care for them “instead of anything else.” Choices matter. Health matters. Work matters. Relationships matter. Money matters. They matter because your heart is affected by it all. You cannot care for your heart without caring for all of life. Motivation is critical. Do you care for these things for the sake of your comfort or your image? Or do you care for them for the sake of your heart? Let’s take time to posture our hearts at the center of every decision and activity. How can I honor God here? How can I choose to be a blessing in this situation? Will this choice feed my heart or grieve it, cause it to mature or to shrivel up? Let the presence of your eternal heart, and the reality of its relationship to your Lord, be central to all aspects of life. “Above all else, guard your heart, for from it flow the springs of life.” [Proverbs 4:23] “The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.” [2 Chronicles 16:9] #WomensMinistry #HealingHearts #WomensBibleStudies #BibleStudies #WomensHearts #ChristianWomen #BrokenHearts #WoundedHearts #Redemption #WomensIdentity #NewLife #Forgiveness #WholeheartedWomen #WholeheartedWoman #Comfort #WholeheartedWomanBook #Grace #Identity #Motherhood #OriginStory #Abortion #WholeHearts #Hope #JesusHeals #FreedomMinistry #EncourageWomen #ThirstyHearts #Forgiveness #InnerHealing #Freedom

Many of us women spend a great deal of time talking and thinking about how to care for our bodies. And whether we actually do anything about it, most of us agree that guarding the well-being of our bodies includes paying attention to what we feed them. Are you as careful with your heart? Your heart lives in a world that strives to normalize filth, hopelessness, self-centeredness, and vanity. Dear friend, these things wreak havoc on your heart. We cannot avoid all encounters with ugliness, but we don’t have to dive into the mire and muck. What are the places and activities it is time for you to avoid in order to guard that precious heart of yours? We have a glorious God who has created opportunity for encounters with truth and beauty. Let’s be intentional in providing our hearts a healthy diet of the good things they were created for. Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. “Above all else, guard your heart, for from it flow the springs of life.” [Proverbs 4:23] Dear friends, this is the crux of all I write. Whether I’m talking about healing, transformation, hope, forgiveness, identity, truth, God’s love, Jesus’s sacrifice, the resurrection, peace, or even last week’s blurb about stopping to enjoy something pleasant . . . the target is the heart. Your heart. Your passions, your thoughts, your purposes. The part of you that dictates your relationship to God, to others, to your circumstances, even to your own body. The part of you that makes judgments about yourself and everyone else. The part that chooses what to do and what to believe. The part of each of us that separates us from the rest of creation; our hearts were made in the image of God’s heart. Many of us “guard” our hearts by putting walls of protection around them. That’s not God’s wisdom. The only way to truly watch out for the welfare of our hearts is to raise our arms in surrender and believe what is true, follow Jesus in obedience to the Father, and embrace our need for the love and grace of God every step of the way. That is the only path to a whole heart and a transformed life. And it is available to each of us. We are invited to stop hiding, stop pretending, stop doing things our own way, and put our hearts in the hands of the One who made us and loves us. There we will find true freedom and wholeness. “Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.’ ” [Matthew 11:28] “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” [Jeremiah 31:3] #WomensMinistry #HealingHearts #WomensBibleStudies #BibleStudies #WomensHearts #ChristianWomen #BrokenHearts #WoundedHearts #Redemption #WomensIdentity #NewLife #Forgiveness #WholeheartedWomen #WholeheartedWoman #Comfort #WholeheartedWomanBook #Grace #Identity #Motherhood #OriginStory #Abortion #WholeHearts #Hope #JesusHeals #FreedomMinistry #EncourageWomen #ThirstyHearts #Forgiveness #InnerHealing #Freedom

Sometimes, voicing your anxieties out loud deflates them completely, and you realize, without anyone even telling you, how unfounded your fears really were.

I love donuts. When my kids were little, shopping day was Donut Day. There was always donut room in the budget, even if was just one donut to split. Now I am the Donut Grandma. Each of my grandkids has a history of donut dates with me. And it’s become a generational delight: it’s not uncommon to find whichever of the kids or grandkids or in-laws are around gathering for donuts on a Sunday afternoon. When my husband and I are on a road trip, we like to stop at little donut shops along the way. After we get going in the morning, I am on my phone looking for that little (or big) donut shop a couple of hours out, where we can take a mid-morning break. You can find donuts in the darnedest places. So why this talk about donuts in an Instagram blog about our hearts? Because the enemy wants us to stay bound up in the gravity and solemnity of our heart concerns. He wants us to have a view of God as a stingy, joyless disciplinarian. But ours is a joyful God, and joy is part of our inheritance. In our trials or confusion or pain, it is good to just stop and take moments to breathe and enjoy some of the goodness out there. Time to look at the intricacies of a flower, or to find shapes in the clouds, or to split a donut four ways. Time to remember that our God delights in our joy. A glad heart is good medicine. It was such an honour to be invited to this year’s Australasian Cardiovascular Nursing College conference to speak about the SCAD patient experience, and to be able to give out information packs to cardiac nurses from right across NSW, Adelaide, NT, Melbourne and Perth. We know from research, patient’s stories and lived experience that the lack of information, or conflicting information increases anxiety in patients and leaves them feeling confused and alone… so we’re on a mission to ensure every newly diagnosed SCAD sufferer (and their families) receive an information pack with the latest, best practice information on SCAD, FAQs and contacts for further support. ❤ For the latest information on SCAD heart attacks, best practice treatments, latest medical research studies and more go to SCADresearch.com.au . . . . #AustralasianCardiovascularNursingCollege #ACNC #Cardiacnurses #cardiovascularnurses #scadheartattacks #scadsurvivors #scadpatients #scadheartattacksurvivorexperience #scadheartattackresources #beatscad #heartattacksupport #heartresearch #heartcare #heartattacks #womensheartattacks #womenshearts #womenshealth #acncconference #nswhealth #australiancardiovascularnurses #scadbrochures #scadresources

For those of us who have been in a negative relationship, we know how deeply it affects us, our souls and our hearts.

4/8/2024, 5:00:30 PM

Whether you received the gift of salvation today, a year ago, or decades ago, your heart needs to be reminded it has an open door to the heart of God. Always. It doesn’t matter whether you can feel it right now. Maybe you’ve had a bad hair day or it’s the wrong time of the month. Maybe you burned dinner. Maybe you had an argument with your husband or you’re just plain tired of your kids. Maybe it’s been a long time since you opened your Bible or showed up at church. Maybe you’ve given in to a temptation you thought you had already conquered. You never have to worry God will find you out. He already has. And His loving presence has never left. It never will. (The Wholehearted Woman, pg. 52) “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” [Hebrews 13:5] #WomensMinistry #HealingHearts #WomensBibleStudies #BibleStudies #WomensHearts #ChristianWomen #BrokenHearts #WoundedHearts #Redemption #WomensIdentity #NewLife #Forgiveness #WholeheartedWomen #WholeheartedWoman #Comfort #WholeheartedWomanBook #Grace #Identity #Motherhood #OriginStory #Abortion #WholeHearts #Hope #JesusHeals #FreedomMinistry #EncourageWomen #ThirstyHearts #Forgiveness #InnerHealing #Freedom

Feeling discouraged or hopeless? If Easter loosed new life into the world, why are you experiencing those same old emotions, desires, troubles, habits that you want to be free of? Why aren’t you experiencing the victory NOW? The resurrection bought salvation for us, once for all. It is finished. Eternity is secure. That victory is NOW the minute we accept it. We paid none of the price; we did not participate in the victory except to humble ourselves and accept it. But the resurrection did not instantly change us all into robots who could no longer make mistakes or break each other’s hearts. Transformation is not a single event, but a journey that is enabled by relationship with Jesus and access to the victorious power that was loosed at the cross. It is a journey of intimacy with God as we surrender, pray, seek His wisdom, and honor His word, renouncing our own great plans and admitting our desperate need. Robots neither give love nor receive it. We are becoming new, learning to love God and each other. We have new life, new hope, new power, and our Father’s unstoppable presence. It is a process, and it is worth it. “Look, I am making everything new!” [Revelation 21:5] #WomensMinistry #HealingHearts #WomensBibleStudies #BibleStudies #WomensHearts #ChristianWomen #BrokenHearts #WoundedHearts #Redemption #WomensIdentity #NewLife #Forgiveness #WholeheartedWomen #WholeheartedWoman #Comfort #WholeheartedWomanBook #Grace #Identity #Motherhood #OriginStory #Abortion #WholeHearts #Hope #JesusHeals #FreedomMinistry #EncourageWomen #ThirstyHearts #Forgiveness #InnerHealing #Freedom

The studies that show the benefits of laughter on the heart and that demonstrate the negative role of anger and hostility are the same studies that, in fine print, are reminding us that the heart is literally, metaphorically, and spiritually the center of what makes us who we are.
