My May garden. Is it really possible that this patch of grey brown soggy grass and empty branches from little more than a month ago has turned into this postcard of lushness and colours, well it seems so. Except for my six plant boxes where I grow vegetables during summer I’m the proud owner of four apple trees, one pear tree, one plum tree and a Japanese cherry tree, that all come into bloom in May. The garden was utterly neglected when I bought the house, so I had to spend the first years cleaning it up from weeds, bushes and small trees and then keeping these areas covered with tarpaulin to kill the weed off. Also the previous patio area was a disaster of uneven stone tiles that all had to be removed and then replaced with 8 tons of decorative gravel. But the one thing that was there from the beginning were the trees, and it was actually one of the things that sold me the house. It takes so many years for a tree to grow up and trees, for me, gives the garden, no matter how small, character instead of just having an empty lawn. Also it takes time for a fruit tree to start producing fruit. I found myself hidden in the chaos of life throughout my early to mid 20s. I thought I was chasing for meaning, connection to what’s sacred. But I was running around, eyes closed, isolated in insecurities, chained to my own ego. A handful of years later, I found that what I was running from was what was actually the most sacred. What I really love about dancing is the variety of ideas that can be expressed. It's amazing to switch between different characters, moods and present a multitude of thoughts. Sharing a couple of snaps from 𝘖𝘴𝘢𝘪, that I performed in Mumbai last week at @rasathestage. This piece is from 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘥𝘢𝘭, a 2000-year-old Tamil text. It elaborates upon the beauty of sound. The poet, who is travelling up the hillock of Thirupparankundram, is fascinated by the sounds he hears along the way. My Ammachi(mother’s mother) was a petite,stocky and dark skinned.Her pleasures were simple.She delighted in a cup of hot tea with murukku that she soaked in it to make soft.She watched movies with such involvement and funny lamentations and loved hearing stories of school and college.My mother was the apple of her eye.She was so wise-insults rolled off her,she firmly believed in karma and good morals,and she cared deeply about people and her animals.She fought for my mother to go to college when most girls didn’t complete even an elementary school education.Visions came to her in her dreams.She spoke of my late grandfather everyday and was so fond of me for I was in his likeness. My Appaachi (father’s mother) was a tall,strong woman who had weathered the vagaries of life as a child bride.My father often talked about how she would have to get back to manual work within a week after giving birth and how she would have to fetch water from the well in the wee morning hours.She woke up at the crack of dawn and was my study alarm during high school years.Every baby in the family has done the neighborhood rounds sitting securely on her hip,even my son.She had simple faith that she practiced with such discipline even into her sixties.The largest geometric kolams came off her fingers just freehand with amazing symmetry.I believe me and sisters’ creative streaks stem for her. Mother's Day was never made much of when I was growing up. My mother was always pretty offhand about it, so I don't have any strong associations or expectations of the day. But it's funny, today walking across the south end of Central Park heading to church, seeing families out in the rain, I felt...left out. Once upon a time I thought I'd have a family by this time in my life - I mean, 31 probably sounded oldish to me then. At any rate, whatever else I thought & dreamed I'd be doing, I know I thought I would be a mother by now. I love my life. With nearly all of myself I accept the circuitous paths that have led to here and now. I do not have regrets. But there is this yearning, primal perhaps, but no less real or heartfelt. A yearning that is in many ways at odds with the rest of my 'life choices'. Maybe I can "have it all". But I don't take that for granted as inevitable or owed to me. These past couple years of my life have held some very unanticipated changes, which leave me gladder, but less inclined to count unquestioningly on continuity. I can't know how the coming years will go.
