Someone I used to know once said to me, “Fathers are dispensable. Mothers are not.” While I can’t agree with that completely, I do know that no matter how fraught my relationship with my mother feels sometimes, there isn’t a love in the world that can compare. Not even my father’s. It’s because I have seen it in her that I am able to give the same limitless love to my own child. Mothers willingly make sacrifices that would never come as naturally to anyone else. They will turn their worlds upside down to make sure their children know safety and security. We hold space for the people we care about. We allow them to be themselves. We allow them to be vulnerable, to show themselves authentically without judging them. And we learn to be present for them. Physically, emotionally, and spiritually. We give to them without asking for anything in return. We help them pick up the fallen pieces. We let the ones we care about know that we’re there. It’s as simple as that. I’ve been fortunate to have friends who have held me together when I’ve needed it. Friends I don’t think I would’ve made it through some of my days without. A new poem! 💗 This was triggered after I was pondering the synchronicity of life and death… how, at the exact same moment, one person can be overcome with joy at the start of a new life, whilst another is overwhelmed with grief at the loss of a loved one. Again, it evolved after the first two lines struck me and I just followed it from there. I hope you like it! I know not everyone will, but I’m loving the writing process! 🥰 x There sits love A first breath, a final gasp. In the same moment. A beginning, an ending. First beat, final flutter. First steps, last dance. First words, final wisdom. First look, last glance. First touch, final embrace. New life, old memories. A beginning, an ending. Just as every dawn must give way to a dusk, every first must eventually, inevitably, be replaced by a last. Starts surrender to finishes, and farewells follow hellos. It’s a cycle, repeating. A circle, never ending. And at the centre of it all, there, there sits love. J.C

Yesterday, I graduated college. It's been a long time coming. 3 years of dual enrollment and 4 years of college - 7 years - for a bachelor's degree. I'm so incredibly proud of myself for getting here despite all the trials and tribulations that came with it. I want to celebrate and be happy, but I also want to pay homage to the grit and determination that got me here. I want to shed light on some of my darkest times in college and remind those still in the trenches that it's okay to take a break if you need to. Having mental or physical health struggles, especially ones that prevent you from doing all the things a “normal” person should, does not make you “less than.” For me, my physical health struggles caused some mental health ones. I wasn't born with most of my chronic illnesses, and the one I was born with wasn't disabling, just irritating, until I was a teen. Suddenly becoming overwrought with fatigue, widespread pain, cognitive dysfunction, and more, is very difficult. Going from a very active, overachieving teen to someone who has difficulty getting out of bed is HARD. Especially for someone as ambitious as me. It created several identity struggles for me. I was constantly told how I could do whatever I wanted to - I was driven and smart, two of the most important things for high achievement. I started dual-enrollment in 10th grade and was well on my way to becoming an attorney by 23. I pushed myself and pushed myself, even when my body said it was tired. I thought it was teenage hormones or that I was being lazy. I wasn't. I was getting sick. Pushing past my symptoms made me worse. In college, there were nights where I cried myself to sleep or called my mom sobbing, saying that I couldn't do it - my cognitive fatigue and brain fog making it almost painful to write a paper that's due. Sigh My heart is frail, strength depleted, Motivation's futile, lost, defeated. Dark energy, a relentless tide, Nails pierce deep, where dreams reside. Where are the promises we once held dear? Hope and strength, now nowhere near. Lost in shadows, where once we stood, The better self, misunderstood. Where's the glimpse of triumph, the ecstasy? Fantasies unfulfilled, a shame to see. I couldn't make him proud, my former self, Regret and disillusionment, a burden to shelf. Failed promises, disappointment's weight, Trying to believe, but it's hard to elate. Lives lived in pain, yet hidden with a grin, A facade of smiles, concealing pain within. But hope lingers still, in tomorrow's light, Amidst the darkness, a flicker, slight. Why isn't being a villain deemed right? Sighs fail to express the heart's plight. Words unspoken, hope cast to the air, Though air is nothing, we still dare.
