Mothers are not.” While I can’t agree with that completely, I do know that no matter how fraught my relationship with my mother feels sometimes, there isn’t a love in the world that can compare. Not even my father’s. It’s because I have seen it in her that I am able to give the same limitless love to my own child. Mother's Day Retrospection and Gratitude A few days ago, I remembered that my mother was only twenty-four (and I was five), when she lost her mother at just sixty years old. Yet, the Lord has allowed Mommy to be just weeks away from sixty-eight and allowed me to be months away from forty-nine. God is kind and we are blessed to still be here and to have one another. Primero que nada, admiremos esos hermosos ojos de mi bebé. Ahora, tengo demasiadas cosas en la cabeza luego de terminar de leer este libro. Tantas cosas, que creo que necesito tomarme un tiempo para escribir algo digno de lo mucho que sentí y de lo que investigué acerca de este personaje tan interesante como lo es #gonzaloguerrero un maya que nació español (así es como me gusta decirle). Para mí, él es el verdadero padre del mestizaje, ya que lo hizo desde el amor, el respeto, y el entendimiento de una cultura ajena a la suya y a la que terminó amando, tanto que varias ocasiones se le presentaron para regresar a España y las rechazó todas, por el aparente amor a su familia y sus hermanos. Sin duda es una novela histórica muy buena sobre un personaje del que creo que se nos debería contar más al respecto. Odiado por los españoles y considerado un traidor, Gonzalo Guerrero es para mí un símbolo de lo que significa llegar a una tierra extraña, diferente a la tuya, y terminar amándola por el simple hecho de entender que todos somos personas con sueños, vidas, que aman, respiran, con familias, deseos y emociones iguales a las de quien más. A Big Shout out to every Soul, who has grown being a Mother to their own selves, to every orphan child, to every child who felt orphaned despite having a parent, to every child abused, neglected or ignored by the very mother they thought they had to protect them, to every child who had to grow up with a toxic or abusive or neglectful mother, to every child who still trembles in pain, dismay or anger to see a television commercial about a mother-child bond, to every child who still searches for that maternal warmth in almost about every bond they get into. My post is for every Woman who despite wanting to be a mother, has been left childless due to their physical, mental, emotional or circumstantial reasons, for every Woman who chose to adopt or found their motherhood breathing in taking care of the people around from their aging parents to an ailing or dependent family member or a neighbour, to every Woman who became a pet parent or a purposeful person aiming to give their affection away through their work for the Society, to every Woman who found their way of channeling their affection of motherhood by caring for someone in ways that Only the fierce yet gentle Motherly Affection can. Last week we hosted the first of our Pendle Climate Conversations - we were excited to test out bringing together Talkaoke, which we know very well, and the Climate Fresk, which is new to us. Fresk is from the French 'Freque', meaning mural. Together, we - the In-Situ team and partners working across the community - created a large, visual mapping of cause and effect, considering the detail and panning out to see the whole picture. An important part of the Fresk is that there is space for us to collectively name and process our feelings about what is happening to our planet and communities - our feelings of grief, helplessness, fear, sadness. It took me years to define what I was looking for when it came to people in my circle. The kind of things I was drawn to, and what I hope others saw in me. Itcame down to 3 basic traits. 🌸 Loyalty 🌸 Honesty 🌸 Integrity With no solid foundation to draw from, I didn’t have any of this until I was 20. It took an enormous amount of work and self reflection to realize this was the fundamentals I needed my children to be raised in. That this person would be someone others could feel safe around and see my truth. My journey was very messy. Honestly I said it before, with my path, I should be in jail or dead. But I’m here, now, telling the world that I demand these 3 traits from myself and others ALWAYS. I don’t want to feel unsafe, to question others intentions and I never ever want to question if I’m being lied to. I want that for my children too. Loyalty means we are a team. We will face the world together. I have your back when you need me and I’ll hold your hand. That there, is love deeper than the BS life will challenge us with. Honesty is to hear you even when you’re saying hard things. We can both speak our truth and feel safe. Making promises you can keep. You are comfortable telling me I have TP on my shoe or crap in my teeth. That’s truth I need. Integrity took a long time to build. But now it never wavers. It’s tied to karma for me. Is my karma worth keeping something or taking credit for something not mine? No it’s not. When I say something , I mean it. My truth comes from love and not from manipulation. It’s simple really. All relationships for me are built on this. As a parent it’s my job to guide my children to live these too. I call them a super power and no matter how rich/poor you are, these are the fundamentals to everything they will do in life. It took me a long time to stop accepting crap into my life that doesn’t belong. I am an adult. I can make choice on how my village is built? Do you have a foundation you build on? This morning with breakfast, I had the best memories of mornings with my Wela. She’d give me this exact thing for breakfast, and I would enjoy it as I watched her cook. Dinner was always done by lunchtime at Wela’s. I sat with memories of sitting with my Granma and having the best conversations after her already feeding me an amazing meal. They’re my biggest influences when cooking, and I’m thankful and blessed to have them. I’m a love Penny and my future grand babies the same way. They’ll always have a delicious meal and a forever memory waiting in the kitchen, just like my Wela and Granma provided for me. My favorite thing about sharing food is not only am I sharing something I made with love, I’m sharing a memory, a little bit of me and a story, in hopes that it brings you to one of your good memories. The best compliments are “This tastes like Grandma’s” or “like Wela’s.” Every dish I make carries a piece of my heart and legacy. ❤️ #thinkingoutloud

Friday Morning Retrospection: Teacher Appreciation Month She was forty-four when I was born, and her home became my first classroom. She stepped away from the workforce for several years to provide daycare for myself and her subsequent first two granddaughters. Her philosophy was that she did not want us to be in anyone else's daycare/nursery school until we could talk and tell if someone did something in appropriate to us. Not only did she provide my first daycare- nursery school experience, she gave me my first lessons in Christisn service, church polity, and church protocol. Eventually she did return to the workforce and taught for over thirty years. She began at Mary E. Rodman ( #204), later at Paquin School for Teenage Mothers where she taught a course on entrepreneurship and merchandising, and then at other Baltimore City Schools until retiring in 2008 (I think). First several years before the pandemic, she volunteered as a den-grandmother at Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents - Baltimore (RICA). To her students, she was Miss Elliott or Ma Elliott, and at RICA "Grandma." To her former principal at Paquin, she was "Mama Louie." To me, she is my Grandma. Ninety-two and still counting. from recent observations 👀 you know what i find funny is how some people are soooo eager to put a label on themselves 🏷️ and others too they talk about labeling, reason why this or that label is right or wrong, choose the one that fits them most and then happily put it on themselves… i am this, don’t call me that 🙅🏻♀️😅😂 like, seriously? my only question is why? why not just be and enjoy what you do without the terms and labels? i could never relate to this, so if you know, do share 🙏🏻 low-key can’t wait to find out ;)
