Hi everyone! I want to start by apologizing for my recent absence from posting. I have been struggling with my health. At the end of March, I underwent surgery which required some time for recovery. During this time, I also dedicated myself to working on another commissioned family history book, which I was able to complete in April. In addition, my family and I took a trip down to Georgia for a reunion, where we had the opportunity to visit the gravesites of our ancestors. I was able to take photos of our ancestor's graves, and some fulfilling requests on Find-A-Grave that I wouldn't have been able to do otherwise. This experience was truly meaningful to me, as I typically work behind a computer and don't have the chance to travel for such tasks. Recently, I have been focusing on public research and have taken on the responsibility of 'adopting' a cemetery here in North Carolina. My work involves adding photos to memorial pages, attaching documents like death certificates and obituaries, and transcribing these records. I also connect family members together, sometimes requiring extensive document searches to find names and dates. Engaging more in public research rather than personal has allowed me to connect with a community of individuals who share the same passion for ancestry and family history research. As a result, I have been receiving regular communications, such as automatic website updates, approvals of my suggested changes to memorials, research requests, and heartfelt thank you messages from individuals whom I've assisted with adding information and photos. Thank you for your understanding and continued support as I dive deeper into this fulfilling journey of uncovering and preserving our shared heritage. Stay tuned for more updates and insights! #familyhistory #genealogy #ancestry #gravesitevisits #researcher #cemeteryadoption #memorialpages #documenttranscription #heritagepreservation #publicresearch #communityconnections #historicalrecords #familyreunion #surgeryrecovery #historybook #georgiatravel #ancestorgraves #documentarchives #ancestorslegacy #ancestrycommunity #historicalresearch #findagrave #stonemountain #lawrencevillega #gwinnet

Looking southeast at the intersection of Chicago Ave and Main Street in downtown Naperville. I dont know the date but its likely 1880s 1890s. Note the Pre-emption House bottom left at what is now Sullivans. You can even see the buildings that are now Empire visible along with other Chicago Ave. favorites like Darkhorse, Peanuts, Features, and the Lantern. Born into slavery in Georgia in the 1820s, Jerry Pope and his family became the first known Black residents of Steele County in 1864. Two years later, in 1866, he opened the beloved Eureka House barbershop - a place for haircuts but also community building. Pope broke down barriers by mentoring young Black men in the trade. He also fought for representation by running for local office. When he passed in 1894, Pope was hailed for creating a remarkable life despite having been denied an education due to his early life in enslavement. Let's honor the Black trailblazers like Jerry Pope whose perseverance and determination left an indelible legacy. Jerry’s story is being told through records and a wonderful collection of newspaper clippings documenting his time in Owatonna. I am SOOO grateful for all of the work that has been done to make historic newspapers both digitized AND searchable.

Hey Genealogy Family (G-Fam) 👋🏿 🌳 I remember reading a short poem/story my first few weeks in college. It discussed history is always written from the “hunter”, not the lion. It resonated with me because it’s true. It made me understand that life is all about perspective and it made me ask more questions (than previously😂). Who writes and promotes history? Again, what were their intentions? Genealogy 101 course is available. Link in bio S/O to the creator of this statement. A historical time of Barking Abbey curtain installation at The Women’s Museum as part of the exhibition An Idea of a Life. An Idea of a Life March 2024 - Jan 2025 An Idea of a Life is the first exhibition at the Women’s Museum. The exhibition brings together new works of art by the artists Lesley Asare, Meera Shakti Osborne and Sarina Mantle alongside historical objects exploring the lives of the women-led community who lived in Barking Abbey from c.666AD to the early 16th Century. It tells stories that are either imagined by the artists or informed by archaeological artefacts and records relating to Barking Abbey. The exhibition is curated by Nephertiti Oboshie Schandorf with support from Valence House Museum and Barking and Dagenham Archives and Local Studies Centre. A programme of public events is led by New Town Culture. The curator and artists each have personal connections with Barking and Dagenham. #AnIdeaOfALife #WomensMuseum #BarkingAbbey #LesleyAsare #MeeraShaktiOsborne #SarinaMantle #HistoricalExhibition #WomenInHistory #CommunityHistory #ArchaeologicalArtifacts #PublicEvents #timeline #ValenceHouseMuseum #design #London #NewTownCulture #Exhibition #WomenEmpowerment #Heritage #BarkingDagenham #CommunityConnections #CulturalHeritage #HistoricalNarratives #exhibitiondesign #CommunityEngagement #Museum #CreativeWorks #Storytelling #HistoricalRecords

The Expo 88 Skyneedle from a different perspective. As most #Queenslanders would know, the Skyneedle was one of the iconic structures built for Expo 88, designed by architect Philip Cox and constructed by engineering firm John Connell & Associates. During Expo 88 the Skyneedle served multiple purposes, it acted as a focal point and orientation marker for visitors, providing a visual reference point amidst the bustling expo grounds. Additionally, the Skyneedle housed an observation platform near its peak, allowing visitors to ascend and enjoy panoramic views of the Expo site and the surrounding Brisbane skyline. Fun fact: the Skyneedle stood at 88m tall!

Based on the notorious real-life Donner expedition of 1846, Katsu’s bone-chilling mix of historical record and visceral horror pits a group of increasingly desperate pioneers against the unknown dangers of the Old West. After having travelled west for weeks, the party of pioneers comes to a crossroads. It is time for their leader, George Donner, to make a choice. They face two diverging paths which lead to the same destination. One is well-documented – the other untested, but rumoured to be shorter. Donner’s decision will shape the lives of everyone travelling with him. The searing heat of the desert gives way to biting winds and a bitter cold that freezes the cattle where they stand. Driven to the brink of madness, the ill-fated group struggles to survive and minor disagreements turn into violent confrontations. Then the children begin to disappear. As the survivors turn against each other, a few begin to realise that the threat they face reaches beyond the fury of the natural elements, to something more primal and far more deadly. Based on the true story of The Donner Party, The Hunger is an eerie, shiver-inducing exploration of human nature, pushed to its breaking point. #donnerparty #donner #history #americanhistory #america #horror #katsu #fiction #nonfiction #hunger #cannibalism #historicalhorror #horror #historicalrecords #americanwest #cold #snow #freezing #pilgrimage #cozybookshop #cozy #bookshop #hanley #stokeontrent #stoke #coffee #tea #hotchocolate #cafe #bookcafe

Hey G-Fam👋🏿🌳 It’s #ThrowbackThursday 😁 In honor of Women’s History Month & My Grandmother’s Birth month, I want to honor my Great Great Grandmother, MH. She had so many name variations but my cousin is named after her. Also, she raised my grandmother, so I know lot about her. I recorded this audio in July 2023, where my grandmother talked about MH being a housekeeper and how meticulous she was! Funny thing is, I am very similar and our birthdays are two days apart😁♉️ I also found it funny that her race was changed three times on the census. It lets you know that race classifications are socially constructed. I am so grateful to come from these women and that I get to keep their legacies alive! Pictured here is Dr. W. J.Truitt of Naperville riding in his car in 1905. What's also intriguing is Dr. Truitt here had a half brother. A man named Dr. Ruliff Truitt, who also lived in Naperville. I found pictures of the home R. Truitt had built for his family. It dates back to 1916 and is located at 48 E Jefferson. The home was designed by Harry Robinson, who was a cheif draftsman for a fella named Frank Lloyd Wright during WWI. The Prairie Stlye building exists today on the registry of historical places. The home is now offices for North Central College, which is remarkably cool when you learn the following: The Truitt family was good friends with a Naperville man named James Lawrence Nichols, from whom we got our libraries. Nichols was a professor at North Central College and these families were friends. They went to the same church at St Peter and Paul and were instrumental in the development of the towns hospital and college, respectively. Imagine these public leaders (professor and physician) meeting up, hanging out, attending Mass, and helping to establish the town of Naperville over 130 years ago?! Truly amazing. In fact, all that you've just learned has come from the collection of historical records at the Nichols Library. Everything connects. #drtruitt #jameslnichols #naperville #48eastjackson #historicalrecords #nicholslibrary #archives #agriculture #smalltown #northcentral #stpeterandpaul

Here is a photo of a building in Naperville. The building dates from the 1860's and was a wagon and buggy repair shop owned by Richard Peck. Later, a blacksmith business and a series of liveries and machine shops followed over the years. The surrounding details (an agriculture structure in back left and the dirt roads with wheeled carts) put this pic somewhere in the 1870s, maybe 1880s. It was taken long before Dr. Truitt, of Naperville, drove one of the first automobiles in town. (That pic will be revealed another time. So, too shall others.) So what are you looking at? Those barn doors are now the entrances to Red Mango and Henczle's baber shop on Jackson Ave. (Specifically 111 W Jackson Ave.) I thought it was an amazing find, so I shared. #111westjackson #buggyrepair #wagonwheels #blacksmith #richardpeck #redmango #henczelsbarbershop #historic #agriculture #historicalrecords #nicholslibrary #downtownnaperville #heritagesociety

Step into the golden age of historical hotels from the past, like Lennon's Hotel, where every corner whispered tales of elegance and opulence. Picture Queensland's tallest building of its time, adorned with two public bars, a private bar, and even its own tennis court – a true paradise in the heart of Broadbeach. From its prestigious concierge greeting guests in formal attire to the vibrant energy of live stage shows, Lennon’s was the place to be. In 1961, the hotel was taken over by the Federal Group who brightened the facade with coloured Masonite panels and changed their approach to appeal to younger holiday makers looking for more budget priced getaways. The formal clothes previously worn by hotel staff were replaced with informal tropically themed outfits. Sadly, the causal approach did not yield the desired results and Queensland Breweries purchased the hotel in 1965 after it had been passed in at a public auction in 1963. Chevron Queensland leased the hotel from Queensland Breweries and changed the name to the Broadbeach International Hotel. The hotel was demolished in 1987. In its heyday, Lennon's Hotel was more than just a destination; it was an experience unlike any other. Who remembers Lennon’s Hotel?

Last fall, Intro to GIS students received old photos from Hanz Olson, librarian. They were photos of the college when it was under construction, taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The class reviewed the items taken by plane at the time, and recreated the same photos with drones. The photos are on display in the Goodstein Library if you would like to view the changes through the years on Casper College's campus. #innovation #dronesarefun #historicalrecords
