Would he kill you if the situation was reversed? If it's just between you or him, could you even do it? When you like a book, but think it could have been *even* better! Into the Mouth of the Wolf is an entertaining adventure with a diverse cast and thoughtful underlying messages about environmental management. (Swipe or visit comments for blurb.) The action starts early, raising questions about the location and characters. Why are there so many earthquakes? How come Iris and her Mother are in danger? Who is chasing them? And where is the place her Mum named as a refuge? As the blurb says, this is a genre-bending mystery, though I feel a narrower focus may have strengthened the story.ย As a lover of YA books and sci-fi I raced through this desperate to see what happened next. And had lots of fun in the process.ย It was only afterwards that I realised I wanted more of everything โ more world building, more details, more science, and more villainy. I was definitely anticipating more romance based on the blurb. (Be aware the primary couple spend most of the book apart).ย The best way I can explain my feelings is like when you watch a time travel movie that's fun at the time, but things get a bit fuzzy if you try to work out the details later.ย Don't get me wrong โ I think this is a great read. And I fully acknowledge that some of my questions around the plot might be because I'm a grown-up reading a book designed for young adults. But I honestly wonder whether this would have benefited from being expanded into a duology or trilogy, to give all the plot points room to breathe. And to give both the heroes and the villains more time to shine. (I can actually picture this being filmed as a series.) Sorry for this slightly confusing review! Last night, I was in a bad mood, which seems ironic or just karmically cursed considering Iโd gone into the #NLABookshop specifically to find a #CheerMeUpBook and found this one, #CheerUpBlobFish by @juliemurphybooks and @captainblueberry. This #ChildrensBook is about not judging somebody by their appearance and understanding that there are hidden depths to everyone. By the time I got to the end of this tale about the #BlobFish attending the #FestivalOfFish, I was weeping. And as I read the explanation for young readers about the blob fish and their environment and how this impacts their appearance, well, this 51-year-old #MiseryGuts lost her lolly. Yes, a book intended for little #GorgeousOnes spoke to this #OldGirl. It helped me put into perspective the #LisaKeaneElliottPityPartyForOne mood I have been in this past week, now four months into my most frustrating and distressing #RheumatoidArthritis journey. I am not Me at the moment because my environment, my #RevoltingBody are not as they usually are. But if I keep doing what all the specialists tell me to do and just enjoy moments in this non-natural habitat and body, eventually I will come back to where I belong and I may start to have some of that #FF50s life that I was planning before all this RA and #LongCOVID annoyance began. While walking the Andrรฉ Gide walk in a valley below Uzรจs (that sounds a little pretentious but itโs true so I trust that gets me off the hook here), I started thinking of Australian equivalents. The Patrick White walk would be uphill yet unquestionably rewarding; the Amanda Lohrey walk would be labyrinthine. If there was a Helen Garner walk it would have unflinching views of the woods *and* the trees. Peter Carey: I reckon that walk would be crazy-paved and youโd finish somewhere unexpected. Turns out I had good olโ influenza and wouldnโt you know, I wouldnโt wish it on my worst enemy. Coming back from overseas, I already felt behind with everything and then getting sick just made me spiral into oblivion about my author career. HEALTHY. I love a good memoir, but I donโt think I would have ever picked up this particular book had it not been for my cousin telling me all about this crazy Nedd guy who ran the length of Australia, enduring wild amounts of pain from injury, whose mantra of โif itโs not broken, you can run on itโ inspired us to have a pretty deep conversation about what it means to commit and show up when things are hard or uncomfortable. Showing Up is a pretty awe-inspiring book, itโs easy and quick to read, and itโs thought-provoking. Warning: spoilers. My TBR sometimes becomes more have-to than want-to owing to research and obligation. Royals by @tigswrites has been a ๐want๐ for ages and I've finally got there ๐ฅณ What a cool ride it was! Gobbled it overnight. (Always a good sign when you're hungry to get back to a book.) So immersive and imaginative! ๐๐คด๐ธ I remember watching a doco donkeys ago that said shopping mall architects remove natural light and refrain from displaying clocks so there's the chance patrons will lose all concept of time and just shop shop shop. This book? This was *that.* Love the underlying message about consumerism/capitalism. Clever as! (Also gotta love a book reffing Corey Worthington ๐คฃ) So many modern references mingled with older ones. I feel old ๐ญ๐ตI mean, Michael Hutchence? C'mon... ๐ ๐ Very convincing teen portrayal - thinking, language, the whole shebang. (*LOL'd at the discussion about English class and the teacher making you talk about how the book made you feel. Ugh. How rude of them ๐) Was kinda cool to read a book with all the current big brand shops reflected within. I'll never look at Forty Winks the same way again, I'll just wanna climb in ๐ Today's teens could imagine themselves in this predicament in a heartbeat. ๐ I absolutely adored Carousel by Brendan Ritchie and Royals reminded me a lot of that. Both books side-by-side would make a wonderful comparative classroom read. I loved the self-awareness of Royals in that it readily acknowledged Lord of The Flies and The Breakfast Club etc. Could totally see it on the big screen. ๐ฌ๐ฝ๐ The film industry need only mine #loveozya for inspo. What is your 'dream' as a writer. Do you want to write for children - picture books, junior fiction, midgrade, young adult? What about adult fiction? Non-fiction? Memoir or biography? I know many people, myself included, who started out with their blinkers on, determined they would be a [insert genre here] author. If I had a dollar for every time I've heard, "Oh no, I can't write [genre]," I could retire and make the rest of my life a holiday. (Maybe that's an exaggeration but I've heard it from a LOT of people.) The thing is, many of these people (myself included) fell into another genre quite by accident - and finally found their voice. In other words, they found their niche. How do you do that? Tornado by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley Tornado is a very clever story, told in first person from the perspective of the Tornado. The story follows the destruction, death and devastation. Jackie French is such a talented author. Her words come alive on the page, just as the Tornado does; 'seizing houses, crashing trees, spinning cars and tossing seas'. The book starts off 'I was born of twisting air, touching ground and spinningthere.' The Tornado being personified makes the story more powerful and terrifying, as do the illustrations. Bruce Whatley's illustrations are works of art, depicting the dark, scary scenes of the Tornado. Each page has painted drips, which create further sadness and fear, which could symbolise tears from people, the earth and towns destroyed. The feeling we are left with is a sense of dread, as we realise the Tornado may rise again. Tornado is an excellent way for mid-late primary school children to research, discover and study weather systems, specifically tornados. There are important facts at the back of the book and personal comments from Jackie and Bruce as to their experiences and the process of crafting this story. I would highly recommend Tornado. It is a story I have read many times since receiving it. An honest and eye-opening depiction of a Tornado. Itโs the first Monday of May, and I want to continue sharing with you my weekend reading. Another great book that I read over the weekend is The Perfect Retreat by Kate Forster, where secrets unravel, scandals ignite, and love's endurance is put to the test. It's about Willow, a famous mum with three kids, who's in big trouble. She's out of money, her partner cheated on her, and she might lose her home. Then there's Kitty, the nanny, who has a plan to help. She suggests they go to her old family house in the countryside. But when Kitty's brother unexpectedly shows up, things get complicated. This book takes you from London to LA and back again, with lots of drama along the way. Get ready to be hooked from the beginning to the end! Why bother with LA drama when you have this exciting story? I recommend you get your copy! Reading The Perfect Retreat has got me thinking about point of view. Why? Because Kate Forster has written this book with an omniscient narrator - the narrator that sees everything and is inside every characters' head. It can be done well (and is hard to do well) or it can look like head-hopping, which is annoying to read. So, my question is this - what point of view do you prefer to read in (and write, if it comes to that)? First person? Third person? Omniscient? Close third person? Second person?
