This is a *moment*! Sharing a book my words are in, instead of someone else's! ♡ . Aiming for a sub deadline which I was late to start, and then which seemed never to stop coming. I was new to shorts, and what I ended up with, sort of isn't! This 'short' has full character arcs. It's littered with colours and descriptions that make my mind sing, plus relationships, and heartache. So, it's a milestone, it's my debut, and I'm proud to stand here, on this ground ♡ . I know Lassa and Stoney want to meet you, but it's terrifying to let you meet them. Their world—dystopian Steampunk—is my preferred genre, yet, instead of instilling confidence, that makes me nervous! There's a lot you could think wrong. Last day of my birthday week. My gawd, it's been hectic ♡ . What's that? Why am I showing my earrings in this? I'm SO glad you asked! ♡ . A couple of years ago, I admired them in a shop. They weren't at all expensive, but I didn't get them because I just didn't feel like I'd do them justice. Where would someone like me, wear those? They'd probably just wear me! Been exploring gardens! How many of my Hearties are gardeners too? ♡ . I come by this pursuit honestly. My grandmother was an astonishing gardener, creating paradise from arid, baked earth. I might have been extremely isolated in rural Australia, but in other ways I was lucky. My grandparents lived on the same land, so I grew up chasing my sister through the secret pathways threading her sprawling oasis. We visited the bantams, the budgies, the fish pond. Picked fresh fruit and veggies, ducked beneath the bees in the Wisteria and played kitchens in the old thatched fernery. Bamboo became our jungle, quandong stones our jewellery. I have countless memories from my grandmother, and names of her favourite roses are among them ♡ . I have some of her plants. I learned to propagate from her garden as it was declining after she passed. I dug up bulbs and took cuttings, raided corners and crevices for treasures still surviving. While sad, it made perfect sense to me that her garden would turn back into desert without her. She was the spirit it lived off. Without her—humming, watering pansies in her colourful dresses—it simply couldn't carry on ♡ . Occasionally, I write dramatic notes to myself marking writing milestones. No one else can record these things. It's up to us, me hearties! ♡ . The one pictured falls right into July 25 #authorschallenge2020 prompt 'A Special Anniversary' ❤ Why? Characters had been knocking on my door for years before that day. Vivid, complete MCs with their opening scenes caught tight in their fists. All I had to do was listen. Often, their stories would grind to a halt too soon. Their plots were missing. They kept coming, only to hurry-up and wait ♡ . 25-05-19 just over a year ago. My writing epiphany! What if, they all belonged to the same story? What if, they all came from the same universe? Even two WIPs I'd already completed tumbled into place ♡ . My writing world pivoted on that date. I took my writer-self seriously from that date. I took that gorgeous new notebook I hadn't wanted to ruin and made that note, then many more ♡ . It was a catalyst. Everything began to coalesce. I coined my pen name, found #writingcommunity on Twitter, decided who I was gonna be. Sat down and wrote the opening lines of the book which would hinge and begin it all. I didn't know what it would look like, but I could see the road ♡ . It was an awesome day, now special anniversary!
