Thanks to the amazing Arts Centre team, and Frankston City Council, we've been hard at work with world class puppet designers A Blanck Canvas, and momentous music producer Timothy Coghill, followed closely by our sound technician and flock of seagulls to capture the wonders of our universe and inspire the next generation of coastal caretakers. Time is something that we never have enough of, but from addiction to screens we have even less of it than ever. This book has a brilliant message about why we always run out of it. It explains 'time' to children as a precious commodity or resource that can be found, caught or purchased. This poor boy just wants to have quality time with loved ones. The illustrations are crowded together to show when people are busy (cue grown ups staring into devices, and no one is smiling) contrasted with the white space around the boy. 📚🩷✨️ Kidlit people = my people 🥰 A fabulous and energising day @sorrentowritersfestival yesterday, taking a peek behind the kidlilt creation curtain, with the uber talented and much admired @_annawalker_ @janiegodwin @andrearowe_coastwriter @nicole_hayes_author 📚🩷 . 🩷 All the speakers were so generous with their insights into the process of working together as author-illustrator teams, as well as solo. As a children's picture book author myself, there were plenty of 'aha' moments. And I really appreciated the candid and often humorous panel responses, which had the entire room enthralled. . 🩷 Here's just a few nuggets of gold that I took away with me: . ✨️ "Well organised absence of information" : JG on writing picture book text that leaves room for the illustrator to tell the story. . ✨️ "Keep going" : AW on the creator's roller-coaster life. . ✨️ "Only add illustration notes if the text doesn't make sense without it" : JG & AW on the picture book author-illustrator relationship. . ✨️ "Invest in your craft" : AR on being the best writer that you can be. . ✨️ "Please, please, please, read your work aloud!" : NH on self-editing. . 🩷📚 Picture books are a true passion of mine, as both a creator and a reader/consumer. They are 💯 the touchstone of literacy and a wonderful way to bond with young babies and children. Let's talk about dedications 🙂 Whenever I write a new book (quite often before I have an offer) I think about who I would dedicate it to. There are so many amazing people in my life deserving of a dedication, so what I do is I try to relate something about the book to an individual. This potentially means that there are people who haven't received a dedication yet who might be wondering when their time will come 😅 but it's my process and I like it. For Sloths Love Parties I knew who I was dedicating it to the moment I wrote it. The chap in this picture is my good friend Jono. We went to school together, he's been with me through highs and lows and many late nights. We lived together in our late teens and early 20s (for a few years). He is a great friend and was a good housemate. Nowadays we're responsible people with jobs and commitments...but I dedicated Sloths Love Parties to Jono because back in the day much like Marty and his friends...we were party animals 🥳 and when we were done partying we would sleep for ages...and no one was more keen to party, or could sleep in longer than Jono. Public service announcement! If you haven't been to a @scholastic_au Book Warehouse Sale yet, you need to! I went to my first this morning at Crestmead (QLD) filled a box and a basket, and will be back at the next one in April. As a kid, nothing was more exciting than a Scholastic Book Club order form, and I would spend hours pouring through the pages, trying to decide on my one purchase. Walking through the warehouse today was like seeing the catalogue come to life. Plus, this gorgeous haul cost $75. Considering it has us sorted for every small human's birthday for the next year (and some treat books just for me), I reckon it is the best bargain you will find. Does anyone else (who is not an author, illustrator, book designer or publisher) get a real buzz out of sticking those lovely little circle stickers onto Notable (and then shortlisted and winner and honour) books each year? It’s no secret #kidlit is my love and so the CBCA Book of the Year Awards are kind of like my Oscars! This year I’m in agreement with almost all their choices and I was delighted to see so many books I loved on the lists. Having been on the ‘official’ side of the Awards years ago I know how much work goes into reading and assessing every book and know that the effort is appreciated by so many. Kids and adults alike know that the shiny sticker in the cover means good things lie inside the pages of this book.
