There was so much action and suspense as well as the blossoming romance and the ending had me gasping as my theories were proven partly right! Unforgiven by Sarah Barrie I've tried Barrie's earlier books and they were a DNF. However, this one I really enjoyed! Protagonist Lexi is tough and streetwise. She's a survivor of childhood trauma who was not taken in by the system. She has mad IT skills which she uses to bring online predators to justice. Unforgiven sees her working with police to catch a predator who featured in her childhood. Why are Mondays so difficult? Mine has been a bit of a trudge, to be honest, so I am glad to be home in my comfy chair. 😀 🌳🐎BLOOD TREE RIVER🐎🌳 by:@authorsarahbarrie I was introduced to this author last year and absolutely loved reading her book at the time. So much so, I went out and got a few of her older books. I wasn't disappointed either. This was set in my home state, Tasmania, so it was always going to be a book to enjoy. Although it is a fictional place, I wish I could visit the area to get the feel of the space and isolation of some of the areas mentioned. Overall, I enjoyed this read and the storyline throughout. I felt for Logan and Connor, and all the rumours floating about were exactly what I expected from a small town. Indy is another feisty female cop who is such a great character, but I want more for this character. The thriller aspect was there, but maybe not as thriller-like as I hoped for, but that's a me thing as thrillers are my go-to. Who else is loving the Lexi Winter series by Sarah Barrie? I've read all three and listened to the audiobooks for each and I seriously love them. It's the first series I've been hooked on in a long time! If you haven't read them, the series follows Lexi Winter an "ace hacker, ex prostitute, Jack Daniels drinker and part time vigilante" as she works with the police to put some of society's worst behind bars. What I love about the series is that the books deal with confronting and sensitive issues and Sarah Barrie isn't afraid to be graphic with the details, but this paired with the witty banter between the main characters is what kept me turning the pages well past my bed time. The series has all the things I love about crime fiction so I'm just over here, not so patiently waiting for book number 4 in the series!!

I found I was able to follow along despite jumping in at the end. I loved Lexi- she’s such an interesting character, so strong and I loved the vigilante cop angle. As well as a kick arse female main character this one was faced paced and action packed. I was completely taken by the twist and I enjoyed the humour. 📖 Book review | Vendetta by @authorsarahbarrie ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My last read for 2023, and what an absolutely, totally amazing book it was to finish the year. The incredible story of Lexi continues and although you can read this instalment as a standalone, I would suggest to make for a richer experience, that you grab a copy of both Unforgiven and Retribution and jump into her story from the very beginning. You’ll love them and will be glad that you did. Lexi’s dry humour and say-it-as-it-is personality not only continues in this book but gets her into trouble as much as it gets her out of it. Her larger-than-life personality, with a heart of gold and a loyalty to those she considers family, are part of her unique character, with a past that has included child abuse, life on the streets, petty theft, prostitution, cybercrime and law enforcement consultant. I have said it before and I will say it again….. I can honestly declare that Lexi is one of my favourite fictional characters of all time. This fast-paced action will have you on the edge of your seat, with twists and turns and of course, Lexi’s humorous and impeccably timed remarks and replies there to give you the full entertaining experience. Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, we get to reconnect with a much-loved character from Lexi’s past. Several characters return in Vendetta, but not everyone is happy and harmonious, then introduce a few new people into the mix and sit back and watch the fireworks. As usual with the Lexi series, there are some very big issues that are tackled, reminding us that not everything is black and white, and we don’t always know what people are thinking or what they are capable of. This book comes straight at you, grabs hold of you and demands your attention….so good luck trying to put it down. I know Vendetta has only just been recently released, but I have everything crossed that we will get the tag along on another Lexi Winter action adventure. Lexi Winter is totally badass! I would say I want to be her when I grow up, except that Lexi has been shaped by a horrific childhood, which is why she struggles to trust anyone and very much does things her way. Switching timelines throughout the book, we learn of Lexi’s childhood, how she was abused by “The Spider” and let down by the police, how he was finally brought to justice by DI Rachel Langley and then the present day, where The Spider seems to be back… except that he’s behind bars, isn’t he? Listening to the audiobook, I found the timeline switches a little confusing, but that aside, this is a gripping and suspenseful story with great character development and plenty of twists. Lexi is a master hacker who tracks down paedophiles on the dark web and deals with them in her own way. Her neighbour, Dawny, had me in stitches and she had plenty of her own secrets too. Rachel Langley is carrying a lot of guilt over letting Lexi down all those years ago and the relationship between the two women was really interesting as they are pushed together to try and catch a dangerous criminal and find out whether they jailed the wrong man, or if there’s a copycat. 📖 B O O K R E V I E W 📖 Happy Publication Day to this absolute gem! Lexi Winter is back in the third instalment of this series, taking off immediately from the conclusion of second book Retribution. This time the stakes are even higher for Lexi, where she gets tangled up between her past and present, putting her in an incredibly precarious position. More than once I had to question where exactly her loyalties lay, but through it all, I’m glad she never went against her morals and showed a fierce protectiveness for the people around her she cares about. I enjoyed learning further about Lexi’s past and upbringing. This, coupled with where she started in first book, Unforgiven, you can’t help but be proud and applaud her for how far she has come as a person. Cass was a character in Retribution who I instantly disliked, particularly with her hostile attitude towards Lexi. I was curious if there was more to her than meets the eye and was hoping this would be delved into in Vendetta. I wasn’t disappointed and despite the experiences she goes through, I enjoyed learning more about Cass. Vendetta has been my favourite book so far in the Lexi Winter series and I am already eagerly waiting for the fourth and final book to come out. With the way this book concluded, it seems like Lexi will be up for a harrowing experience and I know she is going to do it in her signature badass style! Thankfully that wasn’t the case and Lexi is an incredible character along with Rachel and Finn. I loved the banter between Finn and Lexi and found myself laughing out loud. The storyline and characters are well developed and was right up my street. It moved at a steady pace and had many twists and turns. It deals with tough topics but portrays the struggles the police come up against. I really enjoyed this one and it flew by. 🔪RETRIBUTION👮 This is the follow on from Unforgiven, although I would say it can be read as a stand alone. I kind of wish I’d known that bc Unforgiven is one that was very unsettling (content/trigger warnings there). In Retribution we see Lexi Winter once a vigilante now officially a cop, hunting down a major crime family. This one was complicated! I read it with a bunch of lovely bookstagrammers and we had a chat at the halfway point - safe to say my assumptions were way off! There were threads all over the place but it did all come together in the end - you just had to be focused 😅 It actually wasn’t the ending I was expecting at all and it was left wide open for another follow on. Lexi is a character I would like to read about again so I will most likely pick it up when/if it’s in the works!! Would love to hear your thoughts on this one and/or Unforgiven!! ⬇️
