This one’s out on Tuesday! We fell in love with Patrick and his profound wisdom and wittiness in The Guncle and he is certainly back and better than ever in this endearing sequel. Rowley has such a knack for flawlessly blending such heartfelt yet humorous stories. In this one, Patrick pivots from teaching his niece and nephew about dealing with grief to learning about love and its various forms. I enjoyed the escapism aspect and the travel element of visiting Lake Como & Europe! Anytime I can take a trip while reading, sign me up! Rowley just knows how provide an immense amount of comfort in his writing and characters and I hope this isn’t the last we see of GUP! Darling Girls....not sure what to say about it. I loved the first half of it. It had a Mommy Dearest feel to it for a bit. But then, it just went downhill for me. I usually LOVE all of Sally Hepworth’s books. She is an automatic read author for me and I’m not upset I read it by any means, I just lost interest in it. Thrillers are not books I pick up often, but I will for one of my favorite authors. I have a few auto read authors, which I LOVE having b/c I don’t ever have to think about picking up their newest book, it’s always added right to my TBR. I have read all of Sally Hepworth books and after looking at her backlist, I think my favorite to date is: The Mother’s Promise which I read in August 2020. This collaboration with @marianasampaiostudio is one my favorite collaborations to date. The carving was inspired by an ancient vase I saw at the Cleveland art museum last year and Mariana did a fabulous job interpreting the vision in my head! . She did all of the carving on the pieces I threw and we had many conversations and did lots of testing before deciding on how to glaze them, but they came out fabulously, don’t you think? . Where would you put these beauties in your home? Would you hang the planters in the wall or use them as bookends? . . ✨New Release and ARC Review✨ Uncharted Desires gives us a look at the struggles people of mixed races can face, especially the experiences of those who come from indigenous roots. I loved that Jillian shared some of her own experiences through Kat. Kat and West have a messy history and it becomes even more messy when West announces he’s going to step away from music, leaving his backup singers and musicians needing to find other work. They are forced to work out their issues when they end up stranded on an island together. I really enjoyed the twists and turns these two go through. It kept the story exciting and I never knew what was going to happen next! It’s such a fun story with some heavy, serious topics to give the characters more depth. Currently Listening! 🎧 𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙎𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙎𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙚 𝙈𝙤𝙧𝙚 by Anastasia Ryan Not only is @byanastasiaryan one of the best human beings and friends, but she clearly writes the cutest and funniest books. Somehow she makes a real problem in the workplace humerous, light, and strong all at once. I am loving the narrator, @hillaryoutloud a lot! Her voice fits the characters so well. 🩷 I am about a quarter of the way through and I am unable to put it down! It’s one of those where it’s easy to listen to while you multitask. Some audiobooks take more concentration (and that’s okay), but I am so sucked in, it’s not taking much to force my focus. Audiobook recommendation Nosy Neighbors by Freya Sampson. 🎧📚🎧📚🎧 Two neighbors form an unlikely bond while trying to investigate a neighbor’s accident. Kat is 25 years old and has never felt like she’s had a constant home. She is now living at Shelley House along with 77 year old Dorothy who the neighbors have described as being a nosy neighbor. Dorothy is meticulous with all the information she keeps in her journal about everything going on in her building. Soon, there’s a threat to their building and everyone is facing forced evictions. The two form a team to try and save their building. The two suspect that their neighbor has been injured on purpose and try to expose who’s at fault. I found this book a delight to listen to. I loved the storyline that involved unlikely friendships and a bit of mystery. As I got closer to the end of this audiobook, I remember thinking it felt like a Fred Backman book mixed with a bit of Murderers in The Building, and a dash of A Man Called Ove. I felt the writing was done beautifully exposing the intricacies of human connections, forgiveness, grief, community, and friendships, just to name a few themes. The narration is easy to listen to and kept me entertained the entire time. Book Review, I guess. #Sherinreads Arundhati creates her own world beyond Ayemenem - the world of small things, sensory details, smells, tastes, touch and textures, colours, names, etc. The big things remain hidden behind these details (“The big things lurk unsaid inside” Page 142) - like the love laws - who should be loved and how much, who should be touched and who should not be touched and invited into your house, who should be given liberty for certain manly needs and who should be controlled and kept in their place, who should be abused and who should be treated like a princess. To say that she writes so boldly about the big things, unlike the rest of us who leave certain things unsaid because it would stir trouble, would be very fearful. She’s a fearless writer like how a writer should be. She sees things for what it is, sees the things through, not just things, but events, people, places, organisations, structures like the government. A non-violent activist whose tools are the words or the pen. If you’re a person reading to just distract yourself from the life you’re leading, this book is probably not for you. One has to lead a life of honesty and be real and true to themselves and their privileges and accept themself to be able to read this book comfortably and enjoy its language. Otherwise, this book is an uncomfortable read for an ignorant person. Or maybe it will turn an ignorant person into a real one. She writes about childhood trauma, child abuse, pain, wounds, domestic violence,patriarchy, misogyny, class structure, casteism, communism so casually like everyday things. I’m sorry these things rule our everyday lives if not in our own houses and workplaces, in the lives of other people - the privileged and under-priveleged. 🚁Review🚁 I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…Kristen Hannah is a literary artist! I don’t know what she puts in her books but once I start it I cannot put it down! 5/5 ⭐️ The Women follows Frankie, a young woman who decides to join the army and go to Vietnam as a nurse. This was a time when there “were no women in Vietnam” and as she comes home she struggles to find her way back in the world. 🥺 This book was so inspiring and makes me so grateful for the men and women who risk their lives every day for us. This one’s out on Tuesday! I absolutely devoured this stunning debut! This dark academia plot was raw, incredibly powerful and utterly compelling. I was invested right away in this narrative that alternated between the past and the present and McPhillips did a fantastic job at continually driving the suspense. McPhillips takes us on an exceedingly emotional journey that’s both tense and unfortunately relevant. She dives deep into the #MeToo movement and explores strong themes of exploitation, social hierarchy, redemption, revenge and just general toxicity. While heavy at times, these topics are always important to address and I applaud the finesse on which McPhillips did so. ✨ARC Review✨ Have you checked out Shoshana Rain yet? She has a lot of great books for those who are fans of mythology, and she has a why choose series she’s writing right now. It was so fun for me to read the first book in her mythology series! I loved Strife (Eris). She. Was. Strife. And unapologetically so. She made me laugh a few times with how much she enjoyed being herself. She’s a woman scorned, and rightly so. I enjoyed her development and where she ended. Apollo is all the heart eyes. He’s such a great character and is such a cinnamon roll (who would have thought that I would use that term with Apollo). He was definitely my favorite part of this book, and I loved the actions he took toward the end of the story. 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 4 ⭐️ As always, another glowing Jodi review from me! We read this as part of our April bookclub pick, and I was so excited because she is one of my favorite authors. I was enthralled from the start, as I most often am with her books. I love the intricacies and the details that she put in with the honey and the bees, and I loved the symbolism as far as female empowerment and the queen bee, etc. Olivia was living my worst nightmare, especially as a mom with both a son and a daughter. My heartstrings were definitely getting pulled in this one. It’s so easy to say what you would do in either position, but truly, being put into either of these mother’s situations, I pray I never have to know what I would do. The controversial plot twist, which I will not spoil, was done so beautifully. I have heard that Jennifer was the one who wrote Lily’s chapters, and she truly did an amazing job on them. My heart went out to Lily as well, and Asher, and everyone involved. However, the ending really had me fuming. Again, I will not spoil, but the ending to me was just far-fetched and did not seem to fit the characters. That’s all I’m going to say about it! I haven't read the Crave series yet, but I know it's a long one. Who doesn’t love some murder with a side of laughs? Gillian and Ben are now one of my favorite couples. The second chance at love was the sweetest. 🥹 Gillian is a very strong MFC! Growing up having to take care of her siblings, then becoming a mother at a young age shows her capabilities. It shows her love for others and her sweet, sweet soul. Ben is a retired football player coming back to his hometown and seeing Gillian for the first time again, he knows his heart is still hers. The whole town idolizes him, but he idolizes her. The entire book made me have warm fuzzy feels. ➝ It’s the classic story—boy goes off into the world to fulfill his dreams and leaves the girl behind. Not every boy returns home, and I wish Ben Noughton wouldn’t have come back to our small ranching town at all after he retired from playing professional football. I figure it’s a quick layover for him. He always wanted out of this town and off his family’s ranch. I just have to bide my time until he turns his back on all of us again. Then he takes on the coaching position for the high school football team and starts milling around too much, bulldozing the protective walls I’ve built around myself. But he goes too far when he takes my son under his wing to help him be the best player he can be. Leaving me to protect not only my own heart but my son’s too. ✨ARC Review and New Release✨ I was so excited for Cameron’s story and it didn’t disappoint! Thank you, @staceylynn.author and @valentine_pr_ for sending me this ARC! We get a peek at Cameron in Unending Love, and I was really excited to get more of him. We get the story of him and Ava, who have loved each other for a long time (since HS), but never said anything to each other. Cameron decided to pretend he didn’t remember they had been together because he was getting ready to take off to Notre Dame soon. This really upsets Ava, so they have this friends to lovers (for a second) to enemies (more on Ava’s side). I love the way these two slowly start to work out their problems together and how Cameron works to build that trust back up with Ava. A lot of crazy things happen for these two, and I loved the drama it added to the story. These two are really cute, and I can’t wait to see more peeks of them in future books. ✨ARC Review and New Release✨ I loved the story of Gillian, Ben, and Clayton! Thank you, Piper, Rayne, and @valentine_pr_ for sending me this ARC! I thought for sure with the accidental pregnancy that Clayton (he’s a teenager) was going to be Gillian’s high school sweetheart’s (Ben) kid. It tells you right from the get go that he’s not, and she hasn’t told anyone who the dad is because he’s a drunkard and wants nothing to do with Clayton. Ben left to go play football in college and made his way to the NFL. Now he’s retired and he’s come back home to the family ranch to figure out what his next steps are. I love that Gillian and Ben are still hung up on each other right from the start. Ben is working hard to convince her, and honestly, it doesn’t take much, which is my only complaint for this book. Ben and Gill get back together pretty quickly, and I thought for sure Ben would have to do more groveling. I love that Clayton isn’t happy with things because he knows how much Ben hurt his mom, and Ben’s having to try to get in his good graces. It takes longer than I expected because Ben also ends up having to coach the high school football teams, and Clayton is on the team. I thought with him being the coach it would make things move faster for him and Clayton, and it didn’t. That was excellent for me and kind of made up for how fast things moved between him and Gill. I also loved the big reveal at the end and how everything finished up. There was some great drama, and I loved the relationships that came out of it because of those events. Raise your hand if Pitch Perfect is one of your favorite movies 🙋🏼‍♀️ I have probably seen the movie 50+ times. It’s just one of those feel good, sing along type movies, and let’s all agree, Fat Amy is probably one of the most loved characters in that movie. I didn’t know much about Rebel Wilson (she was born Melanie Elizabeth Wilson) so I loved learning about her early years as a young girl and her break into Hollywood life. Her breakout movie is another one of my favorites, Bridesmaids. She had a small part, but that’s what kicked off her career. Rebel is now married with a daughter and I LOVED getting to know her through the pages of her very recent memoir, titled Rebel Rising. She is a HUGE Disney lover, owns houses all over the world, and seems like one of the most down to earth women in showbiz. This easy, fun read was the perfect way to clear my mind, after the last memoir I read, which was pretty heavy and sad. This is why the plant room exists. I just wanted a spot to kick back and escape whenever I had time. Imagine a place that everything is always exactly how you left it. Having a family sometimes our personal space expecially the adults kinda gets taken away for the common good. I finished this book with tears running down my face. The epilogue was tough. To be honest, the whole book was tough and heavy and it’s one of those books that will stay with me for years to come. A memoir by a young neurosurgeon faced with a terminal cancer diagnosis who attempts to answer the question ‘What makes a life worth living?’ The commitment to family and work really showed what an amazing man Paul was. From the first few pages, I knew I’d love him and his story. Some parts of the book were hard to imagine, like how many tough choices can one make but Paul showed strength many may not have had during those times. If you need a good cry, pick this one up. It’s heartbreaking yet beautiful. It has been on my radar for years but it wasn’t until I was browsing the biography section at the library that I thought, now’s the time to read it. Book of the Month Haul! This month had a great selection as you can see. 👀 As soon as I saw 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮, I jumped on it! I have been so excited to read it! It was an easy pick for me this month. My add ons are super exciting too! I’ve been hearing all kinds of things about 𝘋𝘢𝘳𝘬 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳, so I felt like I needed to grab that one. @bookofthemonth is trying something new with a set of short stories put into one book, named 𝘝𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘮𝘦 0.
