The Pumpkin Spice Café - Laurie Gilmore Synopsis: New cafe owner Jeanie returned to Dream Harbour to start afresh. The timing was perfect for her Aunt Dot to hand down the cafe so Old Jeanie could leave Boston and her old life after finding her boss dead on his desk. The first week of arrival had scared Jeanie with noises in the night and local farmer, Logan had offered to help with a stakeout to catch the intruder. Logan, cautious of the newly arrived resident just wants to avoid the town gossip after being publicly dumped by his last girlfriend but he can’t seem to stay away from Jeanie. Will Logan overcome his fear of Jeanie using Dream Harbour as a pit stop before returning to the big smoke or will Jeanie sell the cafe as someone is sabotaging the cafe and scaring her? 4 🌟🌟🌟🌟 A gorgeous Autumn 🍂 grumpy to sunshine book that was recommended by @angeee2018 for my #DymocksReadingChallenge - “key ingredient with food in title” and the start of the Dream Harbour series. I’d guessed correctly to the night scratching and the person sabotaging the cafe so all the crime reading has paid off. Cute romance with low key smut to pair with pumpkin latte and baked goods. Also, many thanks to @jicr_oranje for the pumpkin props. . #thepumpkinspicecafé #thepumpkinspicecafe #lauriegilmore #lauriegilmorethepumpkinspicecafe #dreamharbourseries #onemorechapter #harpercollins #harpercollinspublishers #dymocks #dymocksbooks #bookstagram #instabook #booksofinstagram #grumpytosunshine #romancefiction #bookreview #bookreviewer #perthreader #bookstylist

'The Believer' is a non-fiction book I have recently read. Sarah Krasnostein breaks the book up into various chapters covering the stories of different people that are all somehow involved, influenced, and forever changed by unusual beliefs. For the paranormal aspect, it covers the 1970's disappearance of Frederick Valentich who was flying a Cessna light aircraft to King Island over the Bass Strait and claimed to see strange lights before his audio communication is cut off. We also follow the day to day life of a paranormal investigator. Religion is another heavy theme of this book. We learn about an Australian scientist who moved to Southern USA to build a life-size replica of Noah's Ark and develop a museum hell bent (excuse the pun) on proving the bible contains factual information on the Ark being real, as well as dinosaurs! We also learn about the complex life of a Mennonite family. Finally, we peel back the curtain on the experience of people faced with certain death, long-term prison sentences, and what the heck a Death Doula is (think of a birth doula but for death). If you have a fascination and curiosity for what makes us similar as humans, despite very clear cut differences, you will love this as I did. Krasnostein also brings forth some of her own thoughts, being raised Jewish, on what she feels encountering these individuals. More books exploring the weird things in life, please! Final rating: 9/10 #bookreview #perthwriter #perthreader

One Day - David Nicholls Synopsis: 15 July 1988 Graduation 🧑‍🎓 👩🏻‍🎓 Emma Morley meets Dexter Mayhew in what was supposed to be a one night stand but eventuate to a long-standing friendship. Every year on this date - St. Swintin’s Day, we see their ups and downs, their growth from 20s to 40s and the cementing of their friendship. 4/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟 This sweet story spanning 18 years came highly recommended by @paigey_francis for my #qbdbooksreadingchallenge - Visit the relatives challenge. I did wish I’d read the book first before watching the movie cause it gave away the spoilers. . Read it. Watch it and weep 😢 It’s super sweet and wholesome and how Nicholls transition from Emma’s to Dexter’s perspective so effortless is just wonderful writing. And yes it’s true, life doesn’t always panned out the way we think it will in our 20s. #oneday #onedaydavidnicholls #davidnichollsauthor #hodderbooks #qbd #qbdbooks #qbdreadingchallenge2024 #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #instabook #netflixseries #onedaynetflix #onedaynetflixseries #bookreview #bookreviewer #perthreader #bookstylist #romancebooks #chicklit #contemporaryfiction . Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress - Dai Sijie Synopsis: Two teens from a bourgeois disgraced family were sent to re-education in a coal mine during the cultural revolution. They meet Four Eyes, a friend also sent to re-education at another village. It was at Four Eye’s house, that the boys found a hidden suitcase with forbidden Western literature. After much convincing, Four Eyes gave them a book by Balzac to read. Infatuated with Western literature, the boys stole the suitcase on the night of Four Eyes’s departure back to the city. Luo - one of the teens wanted to educate the Little Seamstress from the mountains who he was in love with by teaching her Western literature which would later be his downfall. 3/5 🌟🌟🌟 What I’d really enjoyed was the friendship from the boys - a coming of age and the bonding but more importantly, the power of knowledge through words and forbidden literature. I liked the symbolism of the Raven - implying the government/big brother is watching or symbolically related to death. Edgar Allan Poe uses the raven in his writings and I’d wondered if Poe had any influence on Dai. It’s always interesting to read a novel translated to English as the writing style is different and more so when it’s translated by Ina Rilke from French 🇫🇷 - #qbdreadingchallenge - New Culture. . #balzacandthelittlechineseseamstress #daisijie #daisijiebalzac #penguinrandomhouse #penguinrandomhouseaustralia #randomhouse #vintagepublishing #qbd #qbdbooks #translatedbook #bannedbook #asianliterature #semiautobiographicalnovel #historicalfiction #comingofage #comingofagebook #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookreview #bookreviewer #perthreader #bookstylist

Romancing Mr. Bridgerton - Julia Quinn . Dear Gentle Readers, You have all known for sometime that Miss Penelope Featherington has been in love with Colin Bridgerton for as long as her friendship with Eloise but he has never reciprocated. Since returning from abroad, Mr. Bridgerton is seeing a different side to Penelope that he’s never noticed before. Conflicted with his feelings as Penelope being “just” Penelope - the wallflower friend and his lack of purpose unlike his brothers is making Colin fighting hard to see his worth other than the nicest man in the ton society. When Miss Featherington accidentally reads his journal, sparking a common interest in writing thus furthering the development of their feelings. However, during the Smith-Smythe musicale, Lady Danbury wager a thousand pounds to divulge me and it is this 4th book where dear readers, I shall finally reveal my identity. 3/5 🌟🌟🌟 After watching season 1 and 2, there’s no doubt, the book won’t be like the series but the premise will be there. Colin did get annoying and his ‘anger’ angers me when he’s prancing around all high and mighty but aside from that, enjoy the light reading. It’s only fitting that today is the release of season 3 and my first tick to my “TV dinner” - #DymocksReadingChallenge and how pretty is the lychee and raspberry tart from @whiskedtherightwei . #romancingmrbridgerton #juliaquinn #juliaquinnbooks #historical #historicalfiction #romance #historicalromance #regency #regencyromance #chicklit #netflixromance #netflixbridgerton #bridgertonseason3 #avonbooks #booksofinstagram #dymocks #dymocksbooks #bookreview #bookreviewer #perthreader #bookstylist

The Visitors - Jane Harrison Synopsis: 7 Elders journeyed to a sacred meeting place in Warrane to hold a conference on a decision of 11 nowees/boats on the coast whether to repel or welcome these visitors to country. 3/5🌟🌟🌟 An interesting retelling of 7 Elders debating the most crucial moment in our nations history. We didn’t learn much in school about our indigenous history growing up which is a shame but this was beautiful to read from a different perspective. To Kill A Mockingbird - Harper Lee Told through the eyes of Scout (Jean Louise) Finch is the every day life of her neighbourhood where there’s the divide between the races and social standing in Maycomb, Alabama. 3/5 🌟🌟🌟 This is one of the few books that I’d started reading more than 15 years ago and never finished so I’m back at it with a vengeance. I can see why this is a classic back in its hay day and ticks off my #qbdreadingchallenge - usual tourist trap. It covers human behaviour on morals and ethics, issues on parenting, racism, gender roles, influences, prejudice and these issues sadly still remain current even though it was written 50+ years ago. 3 stars cause it was a slow buildup and really started picking up from the trial. My take on this book is that we make mistakes but it’s the decisions we make that may have consequences and can we live with those consequences? . #tokillamockingbird #harperlee #penguinrandomhouse #pulitzerprizewinner #legalfiction #historicalfiction #classicfiction #domesticfiction #americanliterature #bannedbooks #qbdreadingchallenge2024 #qbdbooks #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #perthreader #bookreview #bookreviewer #origami #birdorigami #bookstylist

A Kiss From Mr. Fitzgerald - Natasha Lester Synopsis: Evelyn Lockhart wasn’t going to be the typical girl and settle down in Concord Massachusetts. She wanted to follow her father’s path as a doctor but saving a colleague’s (Rose) baby, made her choose obstetrician instead. Unfortunately, her parents were against her career choice as female doctors were rare and wanted her to marry her childhood friend, Charles Whitman. Turning Charles down is just one of the many obstacles that Evie encounters as she tries to get into medical school. Disowned by her family, she turns to Ziegfeld and joins his Follies as a dancer in order to survive. Her only saving grace is the support she gets from Thomas - Charles’s brother and their friendship deepens. But when Evie found out the baby that she saved is Thomas’s, she vows never to see him again. She makes the choices but at what cost? . 5/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Natasha sets the 1920s scenery brilliantly, the glitzy world of fashion and jazz music to the world of speakeasies, Ziegfeld Follies and to women forging a career. This is just a beautifully written classic love story with a feel good ending and one of the first author that I’ve read that’s had a playlist ahead of her time. The Maid - Nita Prose Synopsis: Molly pries herself on her attention to detail with cleaning at the Regency Grand Hotel. Her socially awkward personality removes her from making friends until she meet Giselle Black - a regular resident at the hotel. However, Molly’s life is upended when she discovers Mr Black is dead and she gets framed for his murder. She gets some help from newly acquired friends and together, they piece the puzzle together and restore everything as Molly would say “back to a state of perfection”. 4/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Delightful is what Molly Gray - the maid would say. I cleaned (pun intended) this book up in 4 days and it was such a well written “whodunnit” that I couldn’t put down and didn’t see the ending coming. Bila Yarrudhanggalangdhuray (River of Dreams) - Anita Heiss Synopsis: The Great Flood in Gundagai in 1852 tore through and swept James and David Bradley’s parents and siblings who were first settlers. Holding onto dear life is the 2 brothers and Wagadhaany whose Babiin (father), Yarri on canoe powered through the raging storm to save them. The brothers saved Wagadhanny which meant she was in debt to them as their servant and when James fell in love with newly widowed Louisa, they moved the family to Wagga Wagga to start afresh. At their new home, Wagadhanny and Louisa bonded as friends going against the White way and she meets stockman, Yindyamarra and fell in love. It was difficult to tell Louisa that she was pregnant as she couldn’t have children but she gave birth to twins boys and later a girl. However, friendship between 2 women couldn’t keep the homesickness away from Wagadhanny that Yindi and the family escape. Will they make it back to Wagadhanny’s camp and will her family be there still? 3 🌟🌟🌟 Mandaang guwu (thank you) for a beautiful story based on true event involving Yarri and Jacky Jacky. I got a snippet of our history - early settlers, indigenous culture, the bonding of friends and family. Mandaang guwu for the glossary - Anita explains it well in her story but it just reconfirms the translation to be safe. 😅 I’d anticipated with bated breath for horrid storytelling for Wagadhanny with David and slavery but the book took a different turn instead filled with love, trust and belonging. A nod to my #qbdreadingchallenge to exploring Australia with an indigenous author and the delicious desserts from @whiskedtherightwei to accompanied my reading. . #bilayarrudhanggalangdhuray #anitaheiss #anitaheissauthor #simonandschuster #simonandschusteraustralia #abiashortlistbook2022 #nswpremierliteraryawardswinner2022 #arahistoricalnovelprize2021 #topofthepile #qbdbooks #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #australianhistoricalfiction #historicalfiction #perthreader

The Naturalist’s Daughter - Tea Cooper Synopsis: Rose Winton sets off to London to represent on her father’s behalf (after he was spurred by a platypus) his findings about the platypus. Only the sketchbook never made it to Sir Joseph Banks as he’d passed and women weren’t allowed in the Royal Society. Prior to the journey, she finds out the truth about her mother who was a convict charged for stealing and sent to Aus and her father is not her father. She also has a brother who her bio father took as heir. When she docks in London, she finds the truth about her mother as a scullery maid and the family she serves and her brother is not all who he seems to be. Fast forward to 1908, Tamsin Alleyn was sent to retrieve the sketchbook donated to the Mitchell Library. Unfortunately, the owner Mrs Rosewood passed with the history of the owner lost so the search to authenticate the sketchbook begins. This sketchbook is also of interest to solicitor, Shaw Everdene as an antiquity bookseller and to his client, Mrs Rushworth. To seeks the truth of its origins, Tamsin works with Shaw digging through the mystery whilst discovering about her own family’s past. 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 What a delightful find! I was given a stack of #tbr as part of a colleague’s decluttering and was not sure what to expect when I picked this up and boy am I glad I read it! The whole book with our Australian and English heritage and a touch of indigenous stories, just ties in beautifully, and it all started because of a platypus and Tea Cooper’s imagination. There’s enough history, science and romance to keep readers intrigued. I can’t even sum the book up as it’s a book that comes full circle ⭕️ from past to present. For #internationalwomensday and to cross off ‘Local Favours’ in my #DymocksReadingChallenge I thought it would be nice to spotlight a new author I’ve found and enjoyed and my youngest daughter @paigey_francis for her lovely surprise drawing for me and for her biggest heart of gold 💛 . #thenaturalistsdaughter #teacooper #dymocks #dymocksbooks #harpercollinsaustralia #readaustralian #historicalfiction #historicalromance #australianfiction #bookstagram #perthreader

What a roller coaster ride! 3 generations of women with so much sadness from death, rape, domestic violence, identity, disowned, self harm and cultural differences thrown in from this magnificent debut by De Silva who so deserved winning the Crystal Arts Trust Prize. Shiver - Nikki Gemmell Synopsis: ❄️ Journalist Fin got a job to Antartica to interview crew members on the expedition. On the expedition, there’s men behaving badly, suspicions of journalists and people in general so crew members tend to keep to themselves. There’s flings, falling in love and grief and sceneries of the ice continent. 3/5🌟🌟🌟 This is one of my #tbrpile that I’m trying to reduce and this hits the Travel Bug list on my #DymocksReadingChallenge with a trip to Antartica. I felt the writing style was diary like without the dates or note taking format of conversations. I really like the moments of going from the hustle and bustle of city life to the stillness from the vast land of ice and then the brutality of nature with the blizzard and the ocean. Would have like more about the life In Antartica but I can imagine how some trips can alter someone specially when it involves tragedy that a simplify and minimalist lifestyle away from humanity and materialist needs creates less baggage. . #shiver #nikkigemmell #nikkigemmellbook #harpercollins #harpercollinspublishers #harpercollinsaustralia #dymocks #dymocksbooks #travelfiction #adventurefiction #romancefiction #literaryfiction #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #instabook #bookreview #bookreviewer #perthreader

Stuck Up and Stupid - Angourie Rice and Kate Rice Synopsis: Two major Hollywood celebrities are vacationing at Pippi Beach and hanging with the locals. Who is more thrilled than Lily’s mum, Lydia but Lily is less impressed by Dorian Khan and his idea of hanging out with the suburbanites. To confirm Dorian’s snobbery is backpacker Alex King and their common grounds has Lily instantly drawn to him but he becomes flaky which makes her question her judgement. While on a gap year in the US, Lily keeps bumping into Dorian and his declaration of his attraction to her is when she starts to see some truth about herself and her family. Could lily be so wrong about Dorian? 3/5🌟🌟🌟 This is a lovely wholesome remake of 2024 version of Pride and Prejudice. It took me a few pages in to wrap my head around that it ISN’T Pride and Prejudice. It’s easy to read without the smut for a change but have all the current lingo that will appeal to the Gen Z and Gen Alphas who don’t want to read the Jane Austen version. The last few chapters felt rushed but it would have been hard to wrap it. Love the idea of incorporating the original Bennett sisters’ names as aunts. . Tom Lake - Ann Patchett Synopsis: Set with two narratives, Lara Kenison is at her cherry orchard with her 3 daughters during the pandemic and whilst picking cherries, the girls wanted to relive the tale of their mum dating a famous actor, Peter Duke before marrying their dad, Joe. So cast back to Lara in her early twenties when she went to Tom Lake, Michigan in the Summer for a play she was renowned for called ‘Our Town’ by Thornton Wilder. Here she meets Peter Duke before fame, his brother, Sebastian Duke, Palace and Joe and the summer romance that took place and shaped Lara’s coming of age. 3/5 🌟🌟🌟 A slow burn, predictable plot twist and foreseeable ending but that’s not why I gave it 3 stars. The writing was too safe with Lara and her family dynamic just too lovely. Peter is a jerk and Lara’s naivety was a little annoying. I realised the majority of readers raved about it and the writing was well written even with the different timeline but I couldn’t completely connect. The Silent Patient - Alex Michaelides What prompted Alicia Berenson to shoot the love of her life 5 times then turned silent? Her only defence is her final self-portrait titled: ALCESTIS. Theo Fabre, forensic psychotherapist saw the need to heal Alicia when the opportunity to work at The Grove was available. Her story of neglect resonates with his own upbringing so as her therapist, he delves deep into her past and with the help of her diary, he finally gets her to speak. 5/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 OHEEMGEE!!!! Room - Emma Donoghue Synopsis: Told in 5 year old Jack’s perspective of how this one room is his entire world - his home. He was born there and alongside his Ma, they eat, learn and watch tv there except Ma puts him to bed in the wardrobe when Old Nick visits. For Ma, room is prison. Has been for 7 years and while she provides for Jack and nurtures him, he has no idea she has been plotting their escape. When they do escape, Jack is disassociate from the outside. Room was safe whereas Outside is scary and Ma realised that this new freedom she wanted came with consequences - fame, rediscovering who she is before she was a mother and reconnecting with family who thought she was dead. 2/5 🌟🌟 This is another book I didn’t like. I disliked it because similar stories had happened in reality and it just makes my blood boil. How she was trapped and abused, how someone horrible could do horrible things to another person and get away with it. I loved the parent/child bond despite the circumstances and their resilience. I know Donoghue should get more stars cause she achieved her storytelling by evoking emotions but I couldn’t connect with the characters. The Binding - Bridget Collins Synopsis; Emmett Farmer’s health has been debilitating. Suffering from dizziness, nausea and many other illness thought to be a curse so was sent away by his family for something he’s done that he doesn’t know other than being told he will be a binder. He sets off as Seredith’s apprentice learning some of the basic bookbinding trade before discovering binders have the craft to memory cleanse not only for good but for the bad and the person carries on with life as if nothing happens. The book stores the secrets in a vault never to be shared. Through his learning, he finds HIS book and the book takes a twist with a revealing love story. 2/5🌟🌟 I had high hopes for this as it was such an original idea and I was mesmerised by the book cover but I found it very disjointed and is broken into 3 parts. I would have loved more character development with Emmett’s training with Seredith and to add to the reasons why and how he has these binding powers and how to harness these secrets. #DymocksReadingChallenge - book about books Is there a memory you want to forget???? . #thebinding #bridgetcollins #bridgetcollinsauthor #bridgetcollinsthebinding #harpercollins #harpercollinspublishers #harpercollinsaustralia #magicalrealismfiction #fantasyfiction #historicalfiction #lgbtqfiction #comingofagefiction #alternatehistoryfiction #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #instabook #bookreview #bookreviewer #perthreader

Police and media are in a frenzy to find the connection from past victims to future victims before time runs out. 4/5 🌟🌟🌟 🌟 Bear with me as I will be posting my last 5 books from last year’s 52 reads. This being one of the ‘something spooky’ in #DymocksReadingChallenge This was an advance copy from way back when I had an opportunity to attend publisher’s events of up and coming new releases and was given this 2017 debut novel. I know working through my #tbrpile 🙄 and apologies to Cole for taking so long to get to it. Gripping plot, grotesque scenes with dark eerie feeling and a thrilling ending. I’d really enjoyed Fawkes character, his relationship with his former partner Emily Baxter and her trainee, Alex Edmunds. There’s also comedic relief thrown in that the British do very well. Looking forward to book 2 in a series of 3. . #ragdoll #ragdollnovel #danielcole #danielcoleauthor #hachetteaus #hachetteaustralia #mysterythrillerbook #crimefiction #suspensefiction #thrillerfiction #orionbooks #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #instabook #raggedyann #raggedyanndoll #perthreader

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart - Holly Ringland Alice’s mum, Agnes domestically abused with no place to escape. Poking around her dad’s shed when her parents went for a pregnancy checkup, Alice found wood carvings that her dad, Clem made. Caught in the act by her dad returning from hospital, she accidentally sets the house on fire. Alice, the sole survivor is taken in by her grandmother, June to Thornfield, where she’s taught the language of wildflowers and how to propagate. At Thornfield, she meets Twig, Candy Baby and the other Flowers and learnt about the business but the past is what she wanted to know but the past is an escape that no Flower is willing to return. 4/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟 30 pages in and I’m teary, angry with the trauma 3 living beings have to endured but with the loss and heartache there will also be healing. What beautiful storytelling that I savoured every word and flower that I didn’t want it to end and will be binge watching the #pagetoscreen So if you haven’t read this then start now cause “The Flowers are waiting to meet you.” . #thelostflowersofalicehart #hollyringland #hollyringlandthelostflowersofalicehart #hollyringlandauthor #harpercollins #harpercollinsaustralia #harpercollinspublishers #domesticfiction #readaustralian #readaustralianauthors #literaryfiction #contemporaryfiction #DymocksReadingChallenge #booktomovie #booktomovieadaptation #wildflowers #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #instabook #perthreader #amazonprime #amazonprimemovies

Lola In The Mirror - Trent Dalton The girl with no name has been on the run for 17 years with her mum and on her 18th she was to stop running and find the truth about her life and more importantly, her identity but tragedy struck and she continues to be the girl on the lam under various alias names working for the drug underworld. Desperate to make an artist of herself and leave her past, she meets Danny Collins who gave the girl hope, love, freedom and enough sprinkle of magic for her to escape her monsters. What a roller coaster ride! I felt like I’ve been put through the washing machine -rinse, spun and wring. So much heartbreak yet so much love. I loved the monologues the girl with no name says to the Cocaine Meathead Boy Monster Idiot which had a Samuel L. Jackson “Pulp Fiction” moment. I loved all the illustrations by Paul Heppell at the beginning of each chapter which just enhances the storytelling more. I loved all her fictional names! Liv, Laura Branigan, Vicki Peterson, Pat Benatar. Girl is bad ass! Girl is brave! Girl is inspiring! Girl is lucky! Girl is hope! Girl is lost and Girl is found! 5/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 and my last #DymocksReadingChallenge with my own prompt for Dymocks Book of the Year pick! Congratulations @trentdaltonauthor - you wrote another winner! The Midnight Library - Matt Haig Nora Seed is depressed and decided that life was not worth living after the death of her cat, Voltaire and when midnight struck, she finds herself in a library with her old school librarian Mrs Elm in between life and death. The library with endless books gives Nora a choice to try a life from her Book of Regrets that she might find happiness and resume that life. I’ve been wanting to read this for a while and it ticks off my #the52bookclub - Time In Title I’d enjoyed it as a quick read but don’t love it. However, I do love the chapter titles which is rare and the idea that another Me could be living parallel lives with small or big alternate life. It’s a book that had me thinking about regrets and possibilities and ‘what if’ I altered something which direction would I be heading. If you had a choice, how would you alter your past and would that make you the happiest version of yourself? . I’m giving it 4/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟 because it makes me think on a philosophical level and it made me read up on Henry David Thoreau and his philosophy on simple living in natural surroundings. . #themidnightlibrary #themidnightlibrarybook #matthaig #matthaigauthor #canongatebooks #canongate #themidnightlibrarymatthaig #themidnightlibraryreview #philosopicalfiction #philosophicalnovel #magicalrealismnovel #goodreadschoiceawardswinner #goodreadschoiceawardsbestfiction #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #instabook #bookreview #bookreviewer #perthreader #the52bookclub2023

Apples Never Fall - Liane Moriarty Joy Delaney is missing after the arrival of Savannah Pagonis knocked on the Delaneys door one evening, bleeding from a fight with her boyfriend. With a heart of gold, they let Savannah stayed but this mysterious girl has secrets and the Delaneys four adult children are determined to get to the bottom of it. Stan, Joy’s husband with scratches on his face is the major suspect and all four adult children are divided by which side of the parent’s fence they should be sitting on. This is a novel about retirement, how sometimes the most important people in your life can hurt you. Marriage is hard work and then you add kids, family relationships and tennis 🎾 into the mix. The novel was so so for me. I could relate to the tennis aspect as a teenager, I lived and breathed tennis, waking up at odd hours to watch tennis and realised I was never going to be Steffi Graf 😂 I also really enjoyed the dynamics of the siblings but I can’t let some random person come live with me so it gets a 3/5 🌟🌟🌟and a ✅ to #DymocksReadingChallenge for “Leaves on the cover”. Also, thanks to @alsace_thompson for assisting with the shoot and for the props. 🤩 . #applesneverfall #applesneverfalllianemoriarty #lianemoriarty #panmcmillan #panmcmillanaustralia #familyrelationships #contemporaryfiction #domesticfiction #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #instabook #bookreview #bookreviewer #perthreader #readaustralian

The Ruin - Dervla McTiernan . February 1993, two neglected children, 15 yr old Maude and 5 yr old Jack living in a decrepit cold house are waiting for Garda Cormac Reilly. Upstairs their alcoholic mother lies dead from an overdose. Fast forward March 2013, Cormac has transferred to Galway Mill Street Garda Station from Dublin Special Detective Unit to National Drugs Unit dealing with cold cases. And a cold case he was given - a 20 year old case that still haunts him except this cold case is somehow linked to Jack Blake, who was found death by suicide after hearing his partner, Aisling is pregnant or was it something else? In order to solve the case, he needs to work out, who in the station he can trust. 4/5🌟🌟🌟🌟 This is the first in the series following DI Cormac Reilly with lots of intriguing twists to keep you guessing and a long overdue #tbr book ticked off my #DymockReadingChallenge Dervla sets the scene and then you’re half way through the book still with no clue. Although I must admit this is the first time my hunch was right and that’s a fluke! Also, the first time my polka dot begonia has flowered since rescuing it from neglect. . #theruin #theruinnovel #dervlamctiernan #harpercollins #harpercollinsaustralia #harpercollinspublishers #nedkellyawards #nedkellyawardwinner #davittawards2019 #mysteryfiction #thrillerfiction #crimefiction #readaustralian #bookstagram #instabook #booksofinstagram #bookreview #bookreviewer #perthreader

Icebreaker - Hannah Grace Anastasia Allen is the high achieving, no relationship, everything planned from A-Z, focused figure skater working towards her Olympic dreams. Nathan Hawkins is the captain of the Maple Hills Titans ice hockey team. Neither of them like or know about each other’s sport so when both teams have to share the rink, they become frenemies. This spikes Anastasia’s skating partner, Aaron to a manipulative controlling roommate. 4/5🌟🌟🌟🌟 I liked the perspective from Anastasia and Nathan and really glad Aaron got his comeuppance. Positive vibes such as using therapy, body image with eating and the strong friends support unit. The smut scenes were more in the beginning (honeymoon period) but then developed into getting to know each other letting the romance blossom. It did dragged on a bit but for the first book of the Maple Hills series but loving the romantic enemies to lovers smutty read. ⛸️ ❤️ 🏒 #the52bookclub with a title starting with “I”. . #icebreaker #icebreakerhannahgrace #hannahgrace #hannahgraceicebreaker #simonandschuster #simonandschusteraustralia #topofthepile #spicyromance🌶 #contemporaryromance #collegeromance #booktok #booktoksensation #booktokseries #tiktoksensation #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #instabook #bookreviewer #bookreview #perthreader #the52bookclub2023 #homegrownflowers

Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone - Benjamin Stevenson A dark comedic thriller about a dysfunctional family about to welcome home the release of family member, Michael - Ernest’s brother that he helped put away for 3 years. It’s a mandatory family reunion at a ski resort to resolve past differences mostly some kind of beef with Ernest but things take a turn when an unidentified person turns up dead before Michael’s arrival. And when Michael arrives, things start to picked up with more deaths and kept me guessing at who the killer might be. Took me a few chapters in to get my head around who’s who but the characters all have their own chapters which helped Ernest narrate how each family member had killed someone. 4/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟A unique story written by an Aussie with a catchy title that’s hard to resist and a surprising ending. It’s no. 40 of #the52bookclub - written by comedian and somewhat no. 36 where chapters have cliffhangers. Beyond stoked and a little shocked that Jeff Popple, who's been reviewing crime fiction in Oz for four decades (for the Canberra Weekly) has put I Am Already Dead down as his second favourite crime read of 2023, alongside Jordan Harper, Michael Connolly and Adrian McKinty, all writers I hugely admire. The list stretches to seven and includes my mate Andrew Nette's latest, Orphan Road, which is killer Oz-noir that you should check out (as well as the latest by terrific Oz writers Michael Trant and Dinuka McKenzie.) The full list along with full reviews and reflections on crime fiction this year can be found on his and a few other crime fiction sites - https://murdermayhemandlongdogs.com/the-years-best-my-favourite-crime-novels-and-thrillers-of-2023/ #IamAlreadyDead #australiancrimefiction #southerncrosscrime #yeahnoir #bestcrimefiction2023 #perthreader #auscrimewriters

The Flower Expert - Fleur McHarg Beautifully photographed with great tips on colour styling, understanding flowers and their purpose in styling. I learnt that you need to give hydrangea stem a bash before putting in the vase and they also like drinking from their heads with generous spritz or a good dunk to refresh them. 4/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟 This perfect book has inspired growth vibes for my Spring #DymocksReadingChallenge to assist me in hopefully (very hopeful)🤞🏻 Xmas floral styling. . #theflowerexpert #theflowerexpertbook #fleurmcharg #thamesandhudson #thamesandhudsonau #flowerstyling #perthreader #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookstagram #instabook #booksofinstagram

A Bird In The Hand - Ann Cleeves A renowned birdwatcher, Tom French was found murdered in the marsh at Rushy that retired couple George and Molly Palmer-Jones were asked to investigate. In the twitcher (birdwatching enthusiast) community everyone knows everyone and someone doesn’t like Tom enough to kill him. Which one of his so called friends decided they had enough of him? This is the first book part of a series featuring George and Molly Palmer-Jones and unfortunately, it was a bit slow to get into the book. For some unknown reason, I’d struggled to connect with the characters and the killer’s motive. Good mystery/crime book and didn’t see the killer with lots of bird references. 2.5/5🌟🌟 No. 32 - published by Macmillan in #the52bookclub . #abirdinthehand #anncleeves #panmcmillan #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #instabook #perthreader #bookreview #bookreviewer #the52bookclub2023

Someone gave me this book yonks ago and because I am who I am, I've only started reading it now...🫣 I just wanted to mention something I've found very interesting: Part of our cognitive revolution was the ability to get a large group of Homo Sapiens to cooperate and work towards a common goal. 🫱🫲 Hundreds of chimpanzees together? Chaos. Hundreds of Homo Sapiens? Possibly too...unless you can captivate their imaginations with stories of things that can't be seen like gods, magic, myths. 😲 Rather than communicating obvious things like danger and food, we could unite together and do things if we all believed in a common goal for the greater good. We can see it today in Religion, Organisations (the organisation is not a singular person but rather a set of values and principles), Governments, Ethics and even money (we place value on things, but if you were stranded in the wild with a wad of cash it would be useless, right?). 🏜💵 The ability to create stories got us further than our foraging ancestors could ever have imagined. Now, millions of people can be influenced with a mere hash-tag. 👩‍💻 Wild. #bookreview #bookthoughts #observation #interesting #perthreader #perthwriter

Watermelon- Marian Keyes Just popped the baby out and Claire’s husband, James confronts her of his affair with Denise (a neighbour)and is leaving her. Heartbroken, disbelief and enraged, she moved from London back to her parents place in Dublin to assist her with baby Kate. For a while, Claire could only see rage and moping around feeling sorry for herself until she overheard a family conversation about her anger and selfish behaviour which snapped her out of her rut. She meets her sister Helen’s gorgeous friend Adam and things were starting to look up when James turns up at her house begging her to return to him to start fresh for Kate’s sake. What will Claire decide???? 3/5 🌟🌟🌟 I really enjoyed the conversations and thoughts Claire had with herself - very Bridget Jones style. It dragged a little, probably 20 or so pages that could be edited out but persevere as it’s gets better. Chick lit, light reading with predictable ending and another ✅ to no. 47 - set in the city of Dublin in my #the52bookclub . #watermelon #watermelonmariankeyes #mariankeyes #penguinaus #penguinrandomhouse #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #instabooks #bottomofthepile #tobereadpile #tbrpile #morethan450pages #chicklit #seriesbooks #perthreader #bookreview #bookreviewer #the52bookclub2023

Freckles - Cecelia Ahearn “They say you’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with”. This quote from a stranger that Allegra Bird has given a parking fine to, triggered her functionality for days. Known as Freckles throughout her life, she was abandoned at birth by her mum. Sent to boarding school at aged 5, all she’s ever known was routine and rules. Her ambition was get out off Valentia Island and to be the Garda (police) which she didn’t get into and her next best option was as a parking inspector. But this quote from Rooster/Tristan has riled her to find her 5 closest and the 4 out of 5 people she originally had in mind turned out to be poor choice so she’s on a mission to find a new 5. What she soon discovers that the people you want to aspire to don’t turn out as you imagined and the one person she really wants to connect doesn’t follow through. For a gifted book, this is a 5/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 as it’s a tale in order to fit in you have to know who you are first and to surround yourself with people who love and support you. There were no dry eyes by the time I’d finished half this book in one sitting until 1.15am that it’s made me contemplate my top 5 people. It is also no. 45 - first word is “the” in my #the52bookclub.
