FAMILY ANELLO - SCAVONE - STAZZONE - TORRENTI PARTY Sometimes you have to overturn the patterns. This time I started the research from the Technical Office of the Municipality of Cerami (EN) I had the birth certificate but I was in possession of an address from the late 19th century which was no longer present in the current street directory. There is someone there who, intrigued, can't stop thinking. Two hours after the visit, an unexpected phone call arrives: perhaps a family member is there! But the doubts belonged to us; for Mrs. Concetta Anello there were no doubts but only certainties "...I've been waiting for this moment for 80 years...I'm sure we are related...this is your mother in the photo... ." From this moment on, hands clasping in a strong embrace and indescribable emotions. I thank the Mayor and the officials of the Technical and Registry Office of the Municipality of Cerami (EN) for the welcome and availability shown and to Giacomo who showed us all the artistic and architectural beauties of the place. #cefalutransfer #cefaluexcursions #ancestorstories

A couple weeks ago I spoke in a Ward in my Stake (in our church we are divided into Wards depending on our boundaries. Then several Wards are part of a Stake. We work together as a community to learn about Christ and bond in our beliefs.) I spoke about how to find joy through Christ. I read several talks to prepare and I truly learned so much. As I was preparing I thought of my many ancestors who went through tremendous trials and hardships in their lives. My great grandmother Viola lost two daughters within 3 months. One died from sickness, the other was hit by a truck. It was a devastating time. Her husband Dewey was diagnosed with ALS but given only 3 months to live. He lived another 20 years. It was such a blessing for them. Books said in her journal, “One lesson to learn is that all clouds are silver lined. Great joys can be had. While many of our experiences were hard to bear, we had happy times too.” (Continues in comments) #familyhistory #ancestors #ancestorstories #familysesrch #ancestry #trials #churchofjesuschrist #familystories #grandma #greatgrandma #joy #also #history #oldphotos #churchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #journals #diaries

Over the next month, I’ll be diving into the fascinating world of migration and immigration in family history. 🌎📜 Let’s explore stories, facts, and personal experiences related to our ancestors’ journeys. During the 19th century, European migrants entered the United Kingdom for various reasons, leaving their mark on British history. Many sought better economic prospects. Factors like poor working conditions, land shortages, and rising taxes drove them to explore new horizons. The promise of higher income and improved living standards abroad enticed emigrants. America was often the ultimate destination, but some settled in British cities. Escaping religious persecution or oppressive regimes motivated migration. The United States symbolized personal freedom and democratic ideals. Immigrants contributed to the rich cultural tapestry of Britain, bringing diverse traditions and beliefs. In rural areas, the enclosure movement displaced small farmers from their lands. Poverty and insecurity pushed them to seek opportunities elsewhere. Urbanization and industrialization also played a role, drawing people from countryside to city. Separated families aimed for reunification. Following relatives who had already settled in the UK led to migration. Letters and word-of-mouth connected families across continents. Steamships revolutionized transatlantic travel, making migration more accessible. Railroads within Britain facilitated movement to industrial centers and the western frontier. Jewish Migration: Thousands of Jewish people migrated to Britain, escaping religious persecution in Eastern Europe, especially within the Russian Empire. Their resilience and contributions enriched British society. In tracing our ancestors’ origins, understanding precise places of origin is crucial. Do you have any immigrant ancestors? Did someone from your family leave Britain for a better life? Please feel free to share their story! #familyforgetmenot #familyhistoryresearch #ancestorstories #immigrantancestor

Hey Genealogy Family (G-Fam) 👋🏿 🌳 I remember reading a short poem/story my first few weeks in college. It discussed history is always written from the “hunter”, not the lion. It resonated with me because it’s true. It made me understand that life is all about perspective and it made me ask more questions (than previously😂). Who writes and promotes history? Again, what were their intentions? Genealogy 101 course is available. Link in bio S/O to the creator of this statement. In the world of matrimonial traditions, consider two customs that are unfamiliar to many today: the dowry and the trousseau (pronounced “true-so”). 💍A dowry is usually defined as property or money paid by a bride’s family to her husband’s family on their marriage. Dowries were only in limited use in 19th century New England. 💍 A trousseau is a treasure trove of goodies the bride squirrells away in her “hope chest” for her future home, including everything from linens to an inherited tea set. A trousseau is generally not focused on monetary value. 🎁 Fast forward to modern registries, where engaged couples advertise their preferred gifts, saving everyone the awkwardness of guessing which blender is secretly desired. #FanOfRegistries 💍 Whether it’s a dowry and its negative connotations, a wishful trousseau or the practical registry, the story of bridal traditions continues to evolve. @ancestry @henrylouisgates @familytreemagazine @mainehistory @brides #ancestorstories #familyhistory #genealogy #OTD #onthisdayinhistory #dowry #trousseau #hopechest #bridalregistry #Mainehistory

Hey G-Fam👋🏿🌳 It’s #ThrowbackThursday 😁 In honor of Women’s History Month & My Grandmother’s Birth month, I want to honor my Great Great Grandmother, MH. She had so many name variations but my cousin is named after her. Also, she raised my grandmother, so I know lot about her. I recorded this audio in July 2023, where my grandmother talked about MH being a housekeeper and how meticulous she was! Funny thing is, I am very similar and our birthdays are two days apart😁♉️ I also found it funny that her race was changed three times on the census. It lets you know that race classifications are socially constructed. I am so grateful to come from these women and that I get to keep their legacies alive! To me this is a map of the ancestors who sat on the chair infront. I find these Things completely fascinating. It’s in a very old pub that has been passed down through generations. What is now known as 320 Jefferson Street as a very interesting and active history! Rodrick R. Gregory owned this lot in 1858. By 1863 there was some sort of building located here and housed a general merchant by the name of Ernest Rosa. Rosa didn't stay long because by 1863, Henry Berthhold was in this building and when the rebels came through town his store was completely raided. Nothing was left inside. The building standing today was likely built in the 1870's... William Lange born in 1852 and died in 1900, ran his general merchandise & cigars here from 1875 to 1880 with the help of his trusted clerk Theodore Noelke. In 1880 Theodore officially took over the business from Lange. Later William Lange's sister, Kate Schulte (born 1849) took over the building and ran her baked goods and confectionery business. Kate was also a very well-known resident of Washington, maybe even more known than her brother by the time she died in 1941. She ran her business here from 1895 to 1909. While she sold out the business she kept the building for many years. Over the years the building held a nut store, a couple different meat markets, a shoe repair store ran by E. Peterson, a bread and rolls store, Peterson refrigeration, and a dairy store ran by Kenneth Martin. Can you think of any other businesses located here?! Let us know. Post a photo if you have one!! We would love to see it. #buildinghistory #washmo #BuildingsTellStoriesToo #4rgs #ancestorstories #preservehistory

Hey G-Fam👋🏿🌳 It’s #ThrowbackThursday 😁 In honor of the last day of February, I want you all to meet my maternal great grandparents, Francis & Roy. This post is to honor their birthdays 🎉🎉❤️ Grandma Francis was born February 10, 1923 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Grandpa Roy was born on February 12, 1913, in Belleville, Arkansas. They were 10 years and 2 days apart. They moved to Wichita, Kansas. They had their only child together, my grandmother, Deborah (b. in 1947). Grandpa Roy is buried in Wichita & Grandma Francis is buried in Coffeyville, Kansas. I remember hearing stories that Grandma Francis was a spiritual practitioner. She had many clairvoyant gifts. She was a no-nonsense person in her early years, but later became gentle. She rarely got angry. Growing up, I heard stories about my grandfather being an entrepreneur. He owned a “Rent a Center” like company before he was forced to shut down. Then, Rent a Centers popped up everywhere. Also, he was also a no-nonsense person. He demanded respect and stood on business‼️ We were never on this Earth together, but I love them because they made me ❤️ My Genealogy 101 course is available on my website. Hey Genealogy Family (G-Fam) 👋🏿 🌳 This statement resonates with me so much! I always questioned the intentions behind the universally known stories and names in history. When there are so many unknown and unsung heroes, contributors, trailblazers, inventors, revolutionaries that we never learn or talk about. Who is writing the narrative? Many of our relatives did important things in the community and within our families but we don’t know about it. Genealogy allows us to know our ancestors by name and learn their story. Francis Preston 1833-1896 He was born in Leicester to parents James (shoemaker) and Mary and was 1 of 6 children. Francis worked in the shoemaker industry most of his young adult life following in his father's footsteps. As a teenager he lived in Goswell Street in the area of The Newarke within the city centre. In 1853, he married Mary Ann Abell, daughter of a Woolcomber and neighbour to Francis and his family. Sadly in 1866, Francis' father's James died suddenly whilst on his way to retrieve money owed to him from a customer. The cause of death was recorded as apoplexy (stroke). Together Francis and Mary Ann had 13 children and lived for over 30 decades in the same house on Laxton Street. During their time in this home they sadly lost 3 daughters to scarlet fever, Emma aged 1 year in July of 1857, Mary aged 8 months in August of 1857 and Julia aged 10 in 1880. By 1891 Francis decided to have a change of career and became a beerhouse keeper at The New Road Inn on Welford Road. After both Francis and Mary's death, their son Samuel took over as licensee until at least 1911. Three of their family members also became beerhouse keepers: Their son Frederick had 'The Braunstone Gate Brewery" which was also passed down. Their grandson George Henry had 'The White Hart Pub'. And their granddaughter Florence had 'The Cottage' with her husband. Although most of their children married and went on to have their own families, nearly all of their granddaughters decided to stay unmarried (spinsters). They also had at least 2 grandsons who participated in WW1, one with R.A.S.C and another with R.A.M.C. Most of the Preston family, including Francis and Mary Ann are buried in Welford Road Cemetery, Leicester. #ancestryuk #genealogyuk #findmypast #familyhistory #ancestorstories #welfordroad #welfordroadcemetery #leicester #leicesterhistory

My mother's nickname was "dundi" (pronounced dune-dee), which was used for cute, chubby kids. The literal translation is "baby blimp". Mary Peck Circa 1948 Hungary My grandmother said that my mother was a bratty baby and was always crying or upset. During this photoshoot, the photographers were so frustrated with her that they had to go out and get two geese to distract her. My mother was the first of her generation on my grandfather's side, and his six younger brothers absolutely loved her. They taught her to say bad words and insults that were used to upset my great-grandmother, including calling her a miserable old woman. My family is full of jokers. My mother was born in 1947, and after her birth, my grandfather started to plan to escape Hungary to give her a better life. Shortly after this photo was taken during the winter of 1948, they would flee Hungary and become refugees in British-controlled Austria. #familyday #photography #familyhistory #ancestralroots #photorestoration #vintagephotography #familymemories #nostalgicphotos #ancestorstories #heritagephoto #preciousmemories #VintageFamilyPhotos #GenerationsPast #OldFamilyPhotos #AntiquePhotographs #Hungary #Hungarian #Magyarország #Magyar #photoshop #digitalrestoration #photo #familyphoto #babyphoto #mother #dundi #chubbycheeks

My grandparents on their wedding day. István and Maria Málics April 27, 1946 Zalaszentgrót, Hungary This is the only photo we have of my grandparents from their wedding. I grew up hearing the story of how my grandpa instantly fell in love with her. He saw her walking down the street and approached her, saying, "Little lady, I would like to get to know you," to which my grandmother replied she had no desire to get to know him and wasn't interested in soldiers. He followed her home so that he knew where she lived. Later that evening, he came back with some musician friends and proceeded to serenade her from the street. This went on until her father eventually got annoyed and threatened to shoot them if they didn't stop. He continued to vie for her affection and managed to impress her mother, and within a year, they were married. He once joked with my great-grandmother that if my grandma wouldn't go out with him, he would blow his brains out. My great-grandmother believed this and was worried her daughter would be arrested for causing the death of a soldier. My grandma knew that he was, of course, full of shit. She always cursed at his dark sense of humor. However, he was the only person who could ever make her laugh uncontrollably. The dog in the background was my grandmother's and named Maczko(matz-ko) which translates to teddy bear. #familyday #photography #familyhistory #ancestralroots #photorestoration #vintagephotography #familymemories #nostalgicphotos #ancestorstories #heritagephoto #preciousmemories #VintageFamilyPhotos #GenerationsPast #OldFamilyPhotos #AntiquePhotographs #Hungary #Hungarian #Magyarország #Magyar #photoshop #digitalrestoration #photo #wedding #weddingphoto #familyphoto

Hey G-Fam 👋🏿🌳 On Wednesdays, we don’t wear pink😂 Instead, I share my genealogical research process and findings! Today, I am researching my paternal side of the family from New Orleans, Louisiana. In my experience, the state of Louisiana usually keeps great records. However, this is an example of why fact-checking is crucial when conducting genealogical research. You have to read and reread everything to make sense of it. It can get frustrating but Don’t give up 😁 Keep searching‼️ My Genealogy 101 course is available on my website. It is 15% off for the month of February. Use code “HistoryMonth”. This is one of the earliest pictures of my grandmother, who was 3 years old at the time. Maria Málics Circa 1929 Hungary Unfortunately, the photographer didn't get her in focus. After manually touching up the photo, I ran it through the Photoshop neural filters, and it did a great job of reconstructing her face from the details available. I understand all the arguments against AI, but when it comes to this use case, I welcome our new robot overlords. #familyday #photography #familyhistory #familyphoto #ancestralroots #photorestoration #vintagephotography #familymemories #nostalgicphotos #ancestorstories #heritagephoto #preciousmemories #VintageFamilyPhotos #GenerationsPast #OldFamilyPhotos #AntiquePhotographs #Hungary #Hungarian #Magyarország #Magyar #photoshop #neuralfilter #aipreservation #aitouchup

Hey Genealogy Family (G-Fam) 👋🏿 🌳 This month and every month is a reminder to acknowledge and celebrate our contributions to this landmass. HI(S)Story only tells one side of the story. Many don’t know that many Black Americans are Indigenous to this land. Which makes this statement even more powerful and meaningful. Let’s do some research together and learn more about it 😁 Genealogy 101 course is available. It is 15% off for the remainder of February. Use code “HistoryMonth”. Happy Family Day! Erzsébet, István and István Málics Circa 1923 Hungary I've been restoring family photos, and this is the oldest one we have. It's likely from 1923, and my grandfather is between the ages of one and two. Half of my family is named Elizabeth or Steven. We're not even sure if my great-grandfather was István Málics I or not. My legal middle name is Steven; however, my family "affectionately" refers to me as Steven Steven since I thought Catholic confirmation names were silly and decided to stick with what I already had. #familyday #photography #familyhistory #familyphoto #ancestralroots #photorestoration #vintagephotography #familymemories #nostalgicphotos #ancestorstories #heritagephoto #preciousmemories #VintageFamilyPhotos #GenerationsPast #OldFamilyPhotos #AntiquePhotographs #Hungary #Hungarian #Magyarország #Magyar

Rooted in Ancestry. May the words of Alyson Richman resonate deeply. “And I saw for the first time how, despite the isolation of our own lives, we are always connected to our ancestors; our bodies hold the memories of those who came before us, whether it is the features we inherit or a disposition that is etched into our soul." #rootedancestry #Ancestry #FamilyHistory #Genealogy #FamilyTree #AncestryResearch #FamilyRoots #FamilyHeritage #DiscoverYourRoots #AncestralJourney #AncestryDNA #GenealogyCommunity #Heritage #AncestralHomeland #FamilyAncestors #AncestryRecords #AncestorStories #ExploreYourHeritage #FamilyHistoryResearch #AncestralDiscoveries #LineageLegacy

ROOTED IN HISTORY - As someone who holds a deep passion for genealogy, the exploration of my Finnish heritage holds immense importance, particularly in light of my migrant background. Delving into the records of my family history, I find myself immersed in a journey of self-discovery that transcends time and place. Every document I unearth, every name I uncover, is a testament to the resilience and tenacity of my ancestors, whose stories have shaped my own existence. Whether poring over census records, birth certificates, or the tales passed down through generations, each piece of information becomes a precious thread in my lineage. More than just a hobby, genealogy is a deeply personal journey—a quest to uncover the roots of my identity and understand the cultural traditions and values that have been passed down through the ages. It's a journey marked by moments of awe and wonder, as I piece together the puzzle of my ancestry and forge connections with those who came before me. In tracing my Finnish lineage, I find solace in the knowledge that I am part of something greater than myself—a continuum of lives intertwined across time and space. Each discovery brings me closer to my roots, instilling within me a profound sense of belonging and gratitude for the rich experiences that have shaped my family's story. Through genealogy, I not only honour the legacy of my forefathers but also gain a deeper appreciation for the complexities of human existence. It's a journey of introspection, humility, and reverence for the countless generations whose footsteps paved the way for my own. In the process, I discover that the love of genealogy is more than just a pursuit—it's a lifelong journey of self-discovery and connection to my roots. #genealogy #familyhistory #ancestry #finnishheritage #migrantjourney #roots #culturaIidentity #ancestorstories #heritageexploration #personalhistory

Meet my great-uncle John. Born in 1855 with Down Syndrome, he lived in Cumberland, Maine. After his parents passed away, he lived with his older brother Moses and his growing family. I was surprised to learn that the life expectancy of those with Down Syndrome during the 1800s and even until the late 1900s was only 25 years. And sure enough, sadly, Uncle John only lived until age 25. @ancestry @henrylouisgates @familytreemagazine @ndssorg #ancestorstories #familyhistory #genealogy #cemeterychronicles #DownSyndrome

This was quite the case! I was piecing together a client's family relationships from various records. This was a situation where Sarah was listed in different census records with different family members, each time hinting at a different connection to Louis. It's moments like these that remind me to explore all possible connections. Add in different scenarios, like remarriages or half-relationships, and that can totally change how (and if) people are connected. Always look at the bigger picture in your genealogical research to uncover the full story of your family's past. Remember, understanding family history often means exploring every angle and considering various "out of the box" relationship possibilities. Have you ever come across a genealogical knot like this? How did you untangle it?

Remembering the time I randomly dropped by to visit Auntie Eleanor, my great-aunt. I was 19 years old and genealogy was not even on my radar at the time. I asked her about a photo on her wall, and that question opened the floodgates! 📚 She reminisced about relatives who had passed away and showed me old photo albums. That was the day she told me we’re related to Samuel Morse. 📝 I realized I had to write down these gems of information or else I would forget. She was thrilled when I asked to take notes! What a special day. 💜 I wish I had had more discussions with Auntie Eleanor about our family. 💔 Please, have these conversations while you still can! #callyourmom #familyhistory #genealogy #ancestorstories
