We came to the motherland for Mother’s Day. My mother, my sister, my niece and I. On my grandmother’s birthday. To meet the mothers and sisters and daughters and aunts who, too, wondered about the other apples that fell from the tree so long ago, whose seeds grew into trees in a far off place. Whose apples surely hadn’t forgotten that they came from the same tree as theirs. We met the men who love them enough to spend hours on the computer to find their long-lost relatives on the other side of the world and, when they showed up eight years later, to feed them pizza on what was not just another Friday night in Stockholm. We laughed about the similarities — collecting rocks and old letters and tiny treasures that fill shadow boxes. We marveled at the fate that brought us together, the fairy tale, the hundred years’ gap that closed with each hug, each story, each moment thinking about the grieving mothers who never dared to dream that this kind of a Mother’s Day might be possible. To Carolyn, Esther and Karolina: We made it home. To Beatrice, Beda and Maria: Thank you for raising women who would welcome us with open arms. You are not forgotten. Your names, your love, your stories are carrying on.

In the Pitts … but in a good way! Deb and I recently headed east to visit the Fort Pitt Museum and grounds in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The museum is one of the nicest we’ve visited, and the grounds are immaculate. The outlines of the 1754 French Fort Duquesne (“For Du-KEN”) and 1764 English Fort Pitt are marked in granite, and one of the Fort Pitt Blockhouses still exists, and can be toured. The Forts are the main features of Point State Park, located at the western tip of the Pittsburgh downtown proper, where the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers meet to form the Ohio River. We also rode an incline up the side of the Monongahela River cliff face, and consumed both sandwiches and salads stuffed with French fries (apparently a Pittsburgh thing). In addition to all that, we met up with friends David and Audrey Ann Krzeminski who live in nearby Leechburg. I originally met them via the colonial cooking videos I produce with Townsends, and they’re following my Instagram account. All that culminated in a personal visit to Prickett’s Fort last fall, during one of my hearth demos there. David and Audrey Ann purchased and moved her Great-Great-Great-Grandfather’s 1824 farmhouse to their property, and returned it to its original condition. Today's SUNDAY FAMILY PICTURE is from the 1920s. It shows my great-great-grandparents (left) and my great-grandparents (right) on an outing (presumably on a Sunday, as smart as they were). You can see that my great-grandfather is wearing an eye patch. This was a result of the First World War, in which he was wounded several times. Have you ever wondered where you got it? Your nose, your eyes, your hair? Your height, your smile… Who smiled my same smile before me? Who’s eyes wrinkled up in the corners like mine? Which of the mothers before me gave me my hair? I remember the first time I saw the print by artist Caitlin Connolly—“She Got it From Her, and She Got it From Her”…it spoke volumes to me, and I always wanted to create something like it of my own. But, instead, I asked my photographer/artist daughter Sarah to do it for me. And did she ever. A capturing of the mothers before me in my maternal line—back to Matilda—the earliest mother in my “mother line” that I have a photograph of. I love them all so much… Not just for the physical traits they gave me, but also for the spiritual traits—especially for those. They gave me their words. Their stories. The way they conquered fear, tragedy, loss, and pain. The way they could find happiness in any circumstance. They helped me learn of my Father in Heaven. Of my Savior. Of faith. Of scripture and Prophets, and the Plan of Salvation. Of covenants and temples. Of work in the Lord’s holy house that will connect me to them—to all of my people—for all eternity. They showed me the way, for many of them did this work themselves from Kirtland onward…. And what they couldn’t finish, they left to me. And I leave it to my daughters. And they will leave it to their children. And so it will go. Thank you my mothers—and my fathers, of course. We—men and women, fathers and mothers—have been in this together since the very beginning, haven’t we? This has always been our Father’s plan, and it will ever be.
