Embracing the Seasons of Life: From Self-Sacrifice to Self-Acceptance Supporting my daughter and son-in-law through childbirth brought sleepless nights and new challenges, but also the immense joy of becoming a grandmother. Hospital visits became routine, and healthy choices were hard to find! Amidst this, I decided to shift from part-time work to focus on my healing practice full-time. However, life had other plans. Recognizing both my family’s needs and my own, I put my business dreams on pause. It wasn’t easy. Doubt crept in, but I soon realized—I wasn’t failing. New opportunities kept appearing, showing me I was right where I needed to be, free from guilt. I haven’t quit; I’ve simply adjusted my life’s volume to a sustainable pace for this phase. This post isn’t about giving up, but about embracing my role fully as a supporter, healer, and family pillar. In accepting this, I find my strength. I trust that I am doing enough for myself, my family, and my clients. This journey has been a powerful lesson in acceptance. Life’s path isn’t always straight. It ebbs and flows, twists and turns. May is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month, and as I scroll through my photo library since having my baby, I have chosen these 4 photos that bring back varying degrees of emotion: exhaustion, overwhelm, joy. Not Prepared - 2 words I would use to describe my post partum mental health journey. I was not prepared for the extreme highs and extreme lows, the feelings of joy and love paired with feelings of dread and frustration, resulting in feelings of disappointment in myself for feeling the way that I feel. A lot of feelings! 9 months in and I am having some of the hardest days yet, I recently felt the clouds start to part after a few dark days; days that I felt exhausted, in over my head and that maybe I just wasn’t meant to be a Mom. I know from a head knowledge stand point that especially in the dark days I need to keep my eyes on Jesus, that through Him I have access to a peace that passes ALL understanding, that I have joy and self control… when you’re in the thick of it though, it’s easy to lose focus. Hormones are wild, then sprinkle in the exhaustion. 🫠 Time for some good news! 1. This is a season, and no season lasts forever! 2. When I was a kid, my family stopped at Mammoth Caves on the way home from visiting relatives. One of the most startling things about such a massive network of caves is how easily you could live in the forests above, never realizing they were there. When we took a tour, one minute, we were standing under a park shelter house. The next, we were passing through a nondescript door set in a hillside, and immediately plunging into an other-worldly place. Underground with the rock formations lit up, the caves were pretty cool. I wasn’t a big fan of the eerie dripping sounds, and I definitely could have done without the tour guide pointing out subterranean creepy crawlies. But, uncomfortable as I was, I pushed through and enjoyed seeing this part of God’s creation. We walked for at least half an hour, descending further into the earth. Then, the tour guide had our group stop in a large chamber. She pointed out a hole in the corner and said, “I’ve been on an expedition down there. What SEASON of your life are you right now? There are 4 major seasons in a man’s life. Whatever the season you are, make something productive and valuable out of it. Don’t judge yourself by the seasons you’re experiencing. You might experience challenges, dryness and difficulty in employment, business, relationships or academics, don’t give up. If you do, you’ll miss the opportunities that God has ordained for you. Don’t let the pain of one season destroy the joy of the other seasons. Don’t judge life by one difficult season. “There may be tears in the night but joy cometh in the morning” – Ps 30:5b. In the morning, you will blossom, prospects will come, there will be fulfilment, fruitfulness, success, abundance, breakthrough ideas. God has not brought you this far to leave you. The true version of me is all the roles I've filled rolled into one. Right now, I'm a caregiver more than I ever thought I'd be able to step up and be. Didn't really seem like my gifting in the past. But I'm also full throttle on being photographer/business owner. That is something that doesn't naturally pair with caregiving an aging family member. I'm pleased to say that this week, somehow it worked. I've had 4 photo shoots this week - a wedding, an intimate session, a creative behind the scenes session with two florists, and a family session. It was an unusually busy week! I've also done more than 40 hours of caregiving for my injured mother-in-law. If you asked me 3 weeks ago if this last week would ever work, I would have groaned and emphatically said, "No!" But it's happening, and I'm so grateful! I am grateful because the photography portion fills my cup to come into the caregiver role fresh and energetic! To me, this is a God thing because it doesn't make sense any other way. Don't get me wrong, it was hard! It was messy! I was tired at the end of each day. I didn't always have matching clothes and a clean house, and I missed 4 of the 5 workouts I had planned. But it worked! Now, being 100% transparent, the editing portion has not found its place in all of this yet, but this coming week I only have 1 session, so I'm praying the editing will find space with fewer sessions. And, I'm also prioritizing workouts this coming week. I'm confident those things will fit in. I'm also confident this week will have its own version of messy along the way. About a million years ago while living in South Portland #Maine, I tried my hand at being a “photographer.” Despite being untrained and under-equipped, I forged ahead and even convinced O’Naturals and then @ppnne to hang this series. I don’t know what the fire is for you right now, but i know it feels all consuming. I don’t know what has burned you recently, but i do know that it has you bound to your thoughts. Seasons aren’t meant to be lifetimes. Cool. Cool cool cool. But they absolutely feel like lifetimes when they're hard and lightning flashes when they're not. I'm in one of those medium hard seasons. You know what I mean, where things are kind of tough but not quite tough enough to allow you to really fall apart. Where you find yourself saying, "well it could be so much worse though." And it's true. And still it's hard and it's okay to acknowledge it's hard. My season is just that. A season. A moment in a lifetime. I write it down to remember. “What if you put the same effort into your marriage as you did your profession?” Last weekends marriage retreat in Park City! It was titles “Seasons of marriage”. We took some great lessons, and some great interactions with other couples and finished the weekend with some amazing teachings on parenting. I personally think we’d live in a different world, if more people approached marriage like they do their career. They’d train for it, they’d set aside time specifically to do the things needed, they’d go above and beyond for it grow, and they give it their best instead of their scraps. I’d personally also like to add that in my opinion, whatever you believe in, your faith must come first over marriage from both partners. For us this lays the foundation for everything else. The way we talk, the way we listen, the way we teach our kids, the things we say yes to, the things we say not to. It also reminds me and teaches me in scripture that my Wife comes first over any other breathing creature, kids included. Without her I don’t have my children, and she’s the reason I wanted to make em in the first place 🤷🏽♂️🤣🔥. We certainly aren’t perfect in these things but that’s why we stay trained up for eachother so we can maximize the time we are given together here. Sure, we can find ways to help our children reach their full potential and discover creative ways to adapt and navigate the world, but no one needs fixing here. Same goes for you dear Mother, you hold multi-universes in the palm of your hand, doing so much, worrying about ‘all the things’, blaming yourself, carrying mother guilt and wondering if your decisions around your child’s complex care, are the best ones. Very few would understand the critical conversations you have with medical teams, therapists, your partner or even God. Decisions that directly impact your child, I get it, it’s a lot. When God brings changes in our lives, there is beauty that comes with these changes, just like we see nature take its course yearly from seasons of dryness to new growth. It’s reassuring to know that changes happen in order to bring new things to life. Although, some of these seasons can be hard to experience. It is important to know that they are not just moments of transitions but also opportunities for both personal and spiritual growth. And when we embrace these changes, we open doors to growth that can positively impact our character and faith in God. As hard as it is to recognise this while going through tough seasons, God’s Word assures us that He is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28), to strengthen and empower us to not only survive through the winters of our lives but to thrive through all seasons.
