On May 14, 2024, representatives from various tourism agencies in the Kaziranga area participated in an 'Ingnam Kengkam,' meaning 'walking in the forest' in the Karbi language. The J4L team and community members warmly welcomed the guests and took them on a village walk through Phumen Engti village, explaining the eco-cultural elements associated with the Karbi community. During this walk, the guests were also familiarized with the eco-tourism model that Aaranyak has been implementing in the region, in collaboration with the indigenous Karbi communities. The special event was designed to create awareness among tour operators about the eco-cultural elements that characterize the Karbi villages. On the other hand, it served as a platform to showcase these elements, enabling tourists who visit Kaziranga National Park to experience and enjoy the natural and cultural heritage of the Karbi villages. Last week, CMH had the privilege of joining an incredible group of leaders from our community, to discuss a path forward for Truth and Reconciliation within health care. Indigenous communities have, and continue to be underserved in health care, resulting in poorer health outcomes among Indigenous populations. This needs to change, and that starts with the development of meaningful partnerships with Indigenous leaders and organizations. We are coming together to hear and understand the needs of Indigenous communities, including how to incorporate traditional healing into these settings. Decolonizing Research with Indigenous Peoples Pt. II Excerpts from scholar Linda Tuhiwai Te Rina Smith’s work, Decolonizing Methodologies “In contemporary Indigenous contexts there are some major research issues which continue to be debated quite vigorously. These can be summarized best by the critical questions that communities and Indigenous activists often ask, in a variety of ways: Whose research is it? Who owns it? Whose interests does it serve? Who will benefit from it? Who has designed its questions and framed its scope? Who will carry it out? Who will write it up? How will its results be disseminated? While there are many researchers who can handle such questions with integrity there are many more who cannot, or who approach these questions with some cynicism, as if they are a test merely of political correctness. What may surprise many people is that what may appear as the ‘right’, most desirable answer can still be judged incorrect. These questions are simply part of a larger set of judgements on criteria that a researcher cannot prepare for, such as: Is her spirit clear? Does he have a good heart? What other baggage are they carrying? Are they useful to us? Can they fix up our generator? The Chiquitana Indigenous Nation is one of the most representative of eastern Bolivia, covering 7 of the 14 provinces of the department of Santa Cruz. We recently participated in a workshop on “Environmental Care” with Mr. Miguel García Chuve, a Chiquitano and inhabitant of the indigenous community of Surusubí, part of the Indigenous Territory of Lomerio. Mr. Miguel, a leader in his community and former president of CIDOB, the Confederation of Indigenous Peoples of the Chaco and the Amazon of Bolivia, has been instrumental in defending the rights of the 36 indigenous nations in Bolivia. During our workshops, Mr. Miguel supports the emergence of new indigenous leaders, transmitting the importance of caring for and preserving the land, as well as ancestral wisdom to future generations. The land is life, it is vital and sacred to them. Our main objective is the conservation of the forests of the indigenous communities in the Chiquitano area in Bolivia. Through these activities, we seek to raise awareness about ancestral wisdom in forest conservation and respect for the customs of these communities. Atopic Dermatitis, commonly known as eczema, affects all races and ethnicities but presents uniquely in people of color. It's more prevalent and sometimes more severe in Black and Hispanic Americans, often leading to misdiagnosis due to its distinct appearance. Factors like genetics, environment, social, and economic aspects contribute to its complexity and management challenges. Recognizing the signs is crucial: Intense itching Swelling Dry, scaly skin Warmth in affected areas Open or weeping sores In people of color, eczema may manifest as small bumps or follicular accentuation, leading to thickened skin or prurigo nodules. Skin discoloration (hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation) can also occur post-inflammation, impacting emotional well-being, especially in adolescents. Proper diagnosis and management are key. PLDT Group expands mental health awareness to indigenous communities Pastor Benny Capuno, a tribal leader in Porac, Pampanga, knows all too well the great distress his Ayta community goes through when an earthquake strikes. In April 2019, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake devastated Porac, affecting hundreds and killing 10, five of whom were from the Ayta community. For Capuno, it reminded him and the community of the fragility of life, especially as when the same town was devastated by the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption. It also reminded him of the mental well-being of those who survived.
