Using second-hand materials, like vintage hardwood doors and windows was the key to keeping the character of this sensitively but extensively altered house. Originally built in the 70’s and added to in the 80’s it had lost its connection to the outdoors. It felt dark, convoluted, cramped, and tired. But it was in a lovely leafy backstreet in a laidback beachside town and its hardwood bones were still good and worth keeping. By removing some walls, inserting recycled windows and doors, and flipping the living spaces to the open out to the backyard, facing the east morning light, it became much more light and airy coastal family home. The big old laundry, workshop and a bedroom were converted into a self-contained little flat at the rear. The whole place was upcycled to create two dwellings and given a new lease of life.
