He is in his 70’s and he fought in Vietnam. I believe he was in the Marine Corps. It is a well established rule with our family that nobody is allowed to bring up or ask him about Vietnam... Though the topic is undoubtedly graphic and can make people uncomfortable, I believe that it is necessary. This goes beyond Vietnam, but none of what happened should be censored or watered down in any way because people should know the things that happened, that they are real, and the reality of it IS graphic and brutal. I have always loved a World War book but when I was younger I was more into WW2, WW1 felt too gruesome to contemplate. As I age my reverence for the men that went to war in WW1 has grown. The absolute hideous of it coupled with the promise of glory for your country make such tragic reading. It’s heartbreaking but absolutely immersive and thought provoking. We “traveled” remotely to college classrooms in April — we went to North Carolina and out to Long Island in NY. We also visited in NYC both in-person and remotely. Rosa del Duca explained how she had joined the National Guard in Montana thinking it would be doing local emergency work. Dean Feinman, who had studied philosophy at West Point before going into the Army, noted a first turning point when he began to have questions about the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Joy Damiani shared with the women's studies students how she had enlisted with the hope of becoming a journalist but realized her job was that of a propagandist for the war. This includes processes and involvement with technical equipment capabilities, government chain of command, military platforms, reactionary responses, and even aftermaths. Using history, interviews, declassified documents, and public knowledge, Jacobsen explains why and how situations unfold. The book has sections of history lessons as breaks in the scenario to get the reader up to speed on the important aspects of nuclear weapons or even the political relations relevant for that minute or hour. Overall, I really enjoyed the way the pages flow and author’s ability to heighten the anxiety and even fear that comes with the scenario’s progression. Spitfire pilot Jan Plesman of 322 Squadron (RAF) in conversation with squadron mascot "Polly Grey". Ainsdale, UK, August 1943 - Colorized by @colourisedpieceofjake. Jan Plesman was the second of four children of Albert Plesman and Susanna van Eijk. He was an officer in the Dutch Air Force before the Second World War. He was sometimes called the "Flying Dutchman". Plesman studied at the Technical University of Delft from 1937-1940. He then followed flight training at De Vlijt air base on Texel. On September 30, 1940, Plesman left for France by bicycle with his friend, second lieutenant in the LuVA Geert Overgaauw, with the intention of going to England via Spain. In Paris they were helped by a representative of KLM in Paris. In April 1941 they reached Spain with the help of a Pyrenean guide. Three months later they also reached Portugal. From Portugal they were transported by Douglas DC-3 to Bristol, where they joined the RAF. On August 21, 1941, Plesman arrived at RAF Ternhill. He learned to fly a Miles Master, a Hurricane and finally a Spitfire. On December 23, 1941, he made his first solo flight as a fighter pilot. In his diary he described how they lived in leaky tents at the air base. In June 1943, the 322 Dutch Squadron RAF was founded and Plesman was assigned to it. He made more than a hundred flights over the Channel and the European continent, totaling more than five hundred flying hours. Together with the other pilot he caused the loss of 23 V1s. On Friday, September 1, 1944, the tail of Jan's Spitfire was shot off during the bombardment of Saint-Omer by the Luftwaffe, probably northeast of Saint-Omer. The plane was never found. Plesman is commemorated at the Air Forces Memorial in Runnymede and in the chapel of Ereveld Loenen.

Hello, all! Who else loves a book about libraries or reading? It's hard not to get excited about a theme like this, and I was long overdue a historical read. Has anybody read Ryan's previous books? I loved The Wedding Dress Sewing Circle and The Kitchen Front, so I felt like this was going to be a safe bet, and I was right... it was lovely! The Underground Library follows three young women living in London during WWII - Juliet, new deputy librarian of the Bethnal Green library, whose fiance is a missing soldier, Katie, set for University, but missing her boyfriend who is away at war, and Sophie, a Jewish refugee who has escaped Germany to work as a maid for a man who treats her terribly. They connect through the library, but when it is destroyed by bombs, Juliet relocates it to an Underground Station, where a sense of community and comradeship soon develops. However, the library is in danger of being closed, and all three women find their strength tested as they grapple with intense personal situations under difficult conditions... This was such a lovely read - it was pretty much a perfect historical fiction for me! Three really great and distinct characters to follow, all of whom I got emotionally invested in and who had interesting storylines, a heap of fascinating historical detail about how the Underground stations were used during WWII, a little bit of romance, and an over-riding feel good tone, in spite of the content. All of Jennifer Ryan's books would be great for readers who like historical fiction but don't like too much gore or violence - they strike that lovely balance between building up a vivid picture of wartime life without being too depressing or gritty. The Underground Library has a bunch of peripheral characters who add a lot of warmth and heart to this book, and I absolutely loved how everybody came together, shared what they had and made the best of a rough situation. I enjoy the theme of story bringing people together and giving them something to escape with, look forward to, talk about or dream about, and this book does that so beautifully. I thoroughly recommend this one, if it isn't obvious...happy reading, all!❤️
