"It was spring when I arrived, and the famous Korean cherry blossom festivals were beginning all over the peninsula. My first trip out of town was down south to the coastal city of Jinhae where one of the most famous of them is held. Jinhae, or Chinhae, is also the site of the main US naval base in South Korea, so the place was swarming with drifters. On the bus down, a woman who spoke a little bit of English struck up a conversation with me and offered to guide me through the festival. Because Korean women are in general very reserved that immediately got my gut sense to tingling. At some point, she suggested that we hire a boat and take it out onto a lake or lagoon, and I felt real suspicious about that. She kept pushing that idea, and I thought after a while that I needed to get the hell out of there. I figured she was just trying to get me someplace where I could be jumped and robbed. I made some excuses and I told her I was okay on my own, but she would just not leave me. A few times I excused myself to use the bathroom until I found one that had a window that was big enough to climb through. I climbed out of the bathroom window, scaled a wall and took off running. Squad. This German edition of “Squad,” a memoir written by James B Wharton, symbolizes how veterans on both sides of the conflict shared a common narrative of loss and sacrifice. Though a story of an infantry squad in the AEF, it was translated into German, Czech, and other foreign languages in the era between the World Wars. Wharton’s work was called by one reviewer ”the American ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’,” and was a fictional memoir based on the author’s experience in the Great War. Wharton was a veteran of my former C Company, 111th Infantry and was decorated and wounded in the action at Fismes. He channeled his experiences in the war in his writing: first through short stories, later books, and finally in a 30 year career as a journalist.
