Battle of the Atlantic veteran Ron Underwood was born in 1925 and joined the Royal Navy in 1942 at the age of 17. He served in the Fleet Air Arm's 836 Naval Air Squadron, as a Telegraphist Air Gunner. Ron flew as part of a three man crew on Fairey Swordfish biplanes. The Swordfish were bombers equipped with depth charges and latterly eight rockets fired from the wings. Ron's job was to operate the plane's wireless radio and the rear machine gun. Between 1943 and the end of the war in Europe in 1945, Ron and the Squadron flew frequent anti-submarine missions in the North Atlantic Ocean. Taking off from merchant aircraft carriers, they hunted German U-boats in order to help shipping convoys travel safely from North America to the UK and Russia. Ron recalls air temperatures of -40c during winter, and a time when his plane came down in the Irish Sea due to mechanical fault. Ron's life jacket failed to open but a passing ship was luckily able to pick the crew up from the water. Ron describes the motivation that he and his colleagues shared as being 'young and keen and fighting against an evil'. After the end of the war in Europe in July 1945, 836 Squadron was disbanded, and Ron went on to serve for 30 years in the police force.

Harry Anderson was born in 1924 and joined the Royal Navy in March 1943 at the age of 18. He served on the aircraft carrier HMS Indefatigable, in the Fleet Air Arm's 894 Naval Air Squadron. The ship could carry up to 81 aircraft including fighter planes and bombers. Harry was the ship's 'special messenger', whereby he passed on important messages to the ship's Captain and its fighter pilots. Between July and August 1944 the ship's aircraft launched a series of raids against the German battleship Tirpitz, in the Kåfjord area of Norway. The raids were unsuccessful although a number of German aircraft and U-boats were destroyed. Over 40 of the Indefatigable's airmen were killed during the raids. In December 1944 the Indefatigable was transferred to the Indian ocean, where aerial raids from the ship destroyed a number of Japanese oil refineries in Indonesia. In March 1945 the ship joined the American Fifth Fleet in the western Pacific, helping to support the American invasion of Okinawa. On the 1st of April 1945 the Indefatigable became the first British ship to be hit by a Japanese kamikaze attack. A number of Japanese aircraft attacked the ship and one got through its defence, crashing into the ship's command tower. Harry was on fire party that day, and he helped to put out the fire where the plane had hit. 21 men on the ship were killed by the kamikaze strike. (See photo taken from a nearby ship showing the Indefatigable on fire after the attack). During July and August of 1945 the ship launched raids against various airfields on the Japanese mainland. Harry and the ship were 60 miles from the coast of Japan when the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the 6th and 9th of August. When Japan surrendered on the 2nd of September, Harry recalls tears of joy and elation. They had previously expected to be required to take part in a full invasion of Japan and did not believe that they would survive. After a post-war tour of Australia and New Zealand, Harry and HMS Indefatigable finally returned to the UK in March 1946.

Remembering History: Churchill's Wartime Address to the U.S. Congress On May 19, 1943, Winston Churchill delivered his second wartime address to the United States Congress, a momentous event that underscored the enduring alliance between the United Kingdom and the United States during World War II. As the Prime Minister of the UK, Churchill was not only a pivotal leader in the fight against the Axis powers but also a masterful orator whose speeches inspired hope and resilience. His address to Congress on this day was no exception, as he passionately reaffirmed the necessity of a collective effort to achieve victory. Churchill's speech came at a critical juncture in the war. The Allies had begun to turn the tide against the Axis, but much work remained to be done. In his address, Churchill highlighted the shared values and mutual goals of the British and American peoples, emphasizing that their collaboration was essential for the preservation of freedom and democracy. His words served to strengthen the resolve of both nations, reinforcing their commitment to a common cause. The impact of Churchill's address was profound. It bolstered the morale of the Allied forces and the citizens of both nations, providing a renewed sense of purpose and determination. By acknowledging the sacrifices and efforts of both American and British troops, Churchill fostered a spirit of camaraderie and mutual respect. As we reflect on this historic moment, we honor the legacy of Winston Churchill and the unwavering bond between the UK and the US. Churchill’s eloquence and steadfast leadership during one of the darkest periods in modern history continue to inspire us. 🌟🕊️ #WinstonChurchill #WorldWarII #History #USCongress #AlliedForces #ChurchillSpeech #OnThisDay #HistoricEvents #WWIIHistory #1943 #BritishHistory #AmericanHistory #UKandUS #VictoryInEurope #WarTimeSpeeches #Leadership #GlobalAlliance #MilitaryHistory #GreatBritain #UnitedStates #Freedom #Democracy #Unity #HistoricSpeech #ChurchillsLegacy #May19 #SecondWorldWar #HistoricalFigures #ChurchillQuotes #RememberingWWII

13 days before he recently passed away I had the incredible honour and opportunity to spend some time with D-Day veteran Bill Gladden. Bill served in the Royal Armoured Corps' Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment, within the British 6th Airborne Division. He landed by Hamilcar glider in Normandy on 6th June 1944, near Pegasus Bridge. Inside the glider was a Tetrarch tank and six motorcycles (see photo showing Bill's own painting of his arrival). After landing, Bill conducted regular reconnaissance patrols with his colleagues to locate German positions for Royal Air Force bombers. He spent 12 days in Normandy until he was wounded in the leg by machine gun fire from a German Tiger tank. Bill was initially treated in the same barn into which a few days earlier he had dragged two of his wounded colleagues, who both sadly passed away inside the barn (see photo of Bill sitting in the barn in 2022). His wounds were serious and he was evacuated back to England where he spent the next three years in hospital, where he underwent a series of operations to reconstruct his leg and to allow him to eventually walk again. Bill was passionate about keeping the story of D-Day and the Second World War alive, and regularly attended commemorations in France and the Netherlands. Meeting Bill was the inspiration for my own mission to hopefully meet many more Second World War veterans. Rest in peace, Bill Gladden. 13.01.1924 - 24.04.2024. #WWII #WorldWarII #WW2 #SecondWorldWar #History #WWIImuseum #Historical #WWIImemorial #WWIIhistory #WWIIveterans #WWIImemories #MilitaryHistory #WarHistory #WWIIeducation #WWIIera #WWIIsoldiers #WWIIheroes #RememberingWWII #WWIIlegacy #WarStories #WarEffort #Normandy #DDay #PacificTheater #EuropeanTheater #AxisPowers #AlliedForces #LestWeForget #WarHeroes #WarMemories

The Second World War lasted for six years and one day. Of the approximately 127,000,000 men, women and teenagers who served for 70 different countries during the war, it is estimated that fewer than 500,000 are still alive in 2024. An intimate and less recognised documentary, WWII Scrap Book documents the story of Combat Veteran G.L Joel who fought in the jungles of New Guinea between 1943 and 1944. With 9 parts, the documentary is an interview with the Veteran about his war experiences and subsequent PTSD. It paints an authentic and gruelling image of a WWII soldier’s life for history enthusiasts and also explores themes of trauma and psychological paralysis; the interviewer would later experience nightmares of the horrors Joe describes - a phenomena known in psychiatry as ‘transference.’ The documentary can be viewed on YouTube, and the website wwiiscrapbook.com can be used to learn more about Joel’s story and to view the hundreds of photos Joel (who became a professional photographer post-war) took during the war. #WWIIScrapBook #CombatVeteran #WWIIdocumentary #GruellingWarStories #HistoryEnthusiasts #PTSDAwareness #JungleWarfare #VeteransInterview #TransferencePhenomenon #AuthenticHistory #GLJoe #NewGuineaCampaign #PTSDJourney #WarPhotography #InterviewSeries #YouTubeDocumentary #TraumaExploration #DocumentaryHighlight #WarPhotographer #WW2Memories #CombatExperiences #PTSDAwareness #VeteransVoices #UnseenWarfare #WorldWar2History #DocumentaryFilm #WarSurvivor #HistoricalInsights #WarriorsPerspective #RememberingWWII

Attention history nerds: We may not have photos from 1066 when the Normans conquered England… oh, but wait…maybe we do! Sort of. The Bayeax Tapestry is a one-thousand-year-old, 230 feet long piece of embroidery. It illustrates in exquisite detail the Norman’s version of how the Duke of Normandy became King of England. These images tell the story of the rise of William the Conqueror, and it’s all here depicted in 58 scenes, 626 characters, and 202 horses… stitch by amazing stitch! It’s quite the experience to view the tapestry! The Bayeax Museum displays the piece in a dark room to keep it preserved. An audio guide moves you along as you listen to each scene of the tapestry’s tale. At the time, the tapestry was a storyboard for an illiterate public to share how William fought his way to the throne. Today, it’s also a snapshot into life of people here a millennium ago showing what they wore, their weapons, armor, and architecture. That we can even see this tapestry seems miraculous. History says at times it’s been in the hands of both Napoleon and the Gestapo. During the French Revolution, stories say the tapestry was about to be used as a tarp for wagons until it was rescued and hidden away by a Bayeux local. This 11th century filmstrip of a time in history that changed the leadership of two of Europes great powers is on display in a beautiful small Normandy city we thoroughly enjoyed exploring . Do you think the women stitching this strip of cloth a thousand years ago had any idea we’d be singing their praises on Instagram? 😳 . . #bayeux #normandy #visitnormandy #WWII #rememberingWWII #bayeuxtapestry #historynerds #amazinghistory #beautifulplaces #travelcouple #slowtravel #travelphotography #travelstories #travelmemories #grateful #gratefultravelers #france #visitfrance

A ward at a field hospital on Bataan, 1942. Notice that the cots and bedrolls lay directly on the ground and the "roof" is the jungle canopy. Jim Daly was severly wounded in action mere days before Bataan fell and was in a full-body cast and immobile when Japanese forces took control of the hospital. He wrote about his experiences there: “This was not a hospital as you know, but a [space] cleared out of the jungle. The Japanese left our doctors in charge after marching through our areas and taking watches, rings, etc. We got rid of notebooks, guns, and anything they would take, like knives etc. “Conditions were very bad, dysentery was a way of life. The Japs took most of the medicine and one had to eat under the mosquito net to avoid malaria. [There were] day flying mosquitos [and] hoards of flies in area. “At one time ants found their way into my bed and down inside my cast. They had to pour ether down inside the cast to stop the biting, then clean the bed. After that we placed cans of water under each bed leg to keep them from getting into the beds. “The cast stayed on until July because the bones would not mend on the rice diet. Weinstein got me up and out in the sunlight. Two medical men took me out to an open spot to get some sunlight.” Discover Lt. Bilibid Prison in Manila, where Lt. Jim Daly spent more than 2.5 years as a POW. This image was taken in 1945, notice the bomb damage on the bottom right from American bombings of Manila. A severely wounded Jim Daly, still in a full-body cast, was transferred from a Bataan field hospital to Bilibid in summer 1942. He later wrote: “We were transferred to Bilibid Prison, Manila, a condemned Philippine prison. It had been condemned for Philippine prisoners because of rats, bed bugs, cockroaches. We slept on concrete floors, but I was lucky to have a blanket. They removed the cast shortly after reaching Bilibid.” Bilibid was the main hospital for American POWs during their captivity in The Philippines. It was overseen by Navy doctors captured on Corregidor Island in May 1942. Lt. Daly later credited those Navy doctors for his healing. His medical record adds more to his recovery story: “10 July 1942, the wound was healed, but bed rest was continued. In July 1942, He was allowed up on crushes. In December he was allowed to bear weight on the injured extremity. During this time, he was under supervision. Patient did very little walking, however, due to starvation diet and malnutrition diet as a POW. At the time he became ambulatory, he noticed his right hip was stiff. The right knee had very little motion. He did exercise, some weightlifting, was able to regain about 30 degrees of motion.” Discover Lt. Camp O'Donnell POWs on burial detail. Burial detail was not a sought-after work detail, although many men did volunteer because they wanted to bury their friends. The group of men would go out in the morning and dig a large rectangular hole—about 20 feet long and six feet wide and 3 or 4 feet deep, in the hard ground. It was backbreaking work for the already weakened men, and digging was slow. On occasion, members of the burial detail dropped dead from exhaustion. They the detail would collect bodies at the camp's hospital, stacking them on the litters, and stumbled back to the hole they’d earlier dug. The dead bodies were piled into the grave. The burial details couldn’t keep up with the death rate. Approximately 1,500 American men died at O’Donnell. That’s an average of roughly 40 men per day. The POWs at Camp O'Donnell -- the camp where the Bataan Death March ended -- took to calling the hospital the “Zero Ward” – because once a man was placed in the “hospital,” there was pretty much zero chance of survival. Sick men lay on the floor, which was covered with filth and human waste. Many of these men were sick with dysentery, which causes extreme diarrhea, but the sick men were too weak to get to the latrines. The rancid air in the building was thick with flies. There was little medicine or medical care. A former Camp O'Donnell POW recalled: “Of all the buildings in the camp, none was regarded by the captives with such awe and fatal fascination as was the Hospital…if it couldn’t be called a ‘hospital,’ it was merely a place for men to go to die.” Hear more about the POW experience at Camp O'Donnell in this week's episode of the "Left Behind" podcast. POWs at Camp O'Donnell in The Philippines, April/May 1942. The camp was designed for 20,000 troops. Eventually, about some 60-67,000 American and Filipino POWs would be housed here. There were some barracks with bunks – basically open-air huts made from bamboo and woven roofs and half walls made from plant leaves. The structures provided protection from the harsh sun and other elements, for those lucky enough to claim a spot inside one. A POW recorded in his diary: “Shortly after mid-night a storm broke… The rain came down in sheets. The men who were able, ran into the various barracks, while the rest just laid on the ground. Each time the wind died down, you could hear the men coughing and moaning.” Hear more about the POW experience at Camp O'Donnell in this week's episode of the "Left Behind" podcast. After a 70-mile forced march, American and Filipino POWs were jammed into small boxcars, so tight the men couldn't move ... or breathe. One survivor recalled: “The train consisted of six or seven World War I-era boxcars. ... They packed us in the cars like sardines, so tight you couldn't sit down. Then they shut the door. If you passed out, you couldn't fall down. If someone had to go to the toilet, you went right there where you were. It was close to summer and the weather was hot and humid, hotter than Billy Blazes! We were on the train from early morning to late afternoon without getting out. People died in the railroad cars.” The boxcars were designed to carry 40 men; the Japanese pushed 100 men into each. The air was thick and stifling. The average high in this area in April is 92 degrees Fahrenheit with high humidity. Inside the boxcars – conditions were even worse. Some men began panicking, screaming at and begging the guards to let them out. The Japanese guards banged on the sides and the roofs, yelling at the POWs to shut up. As this month marks the 78th anniversary of the end of World War II, Sadako Sasaki, a young Hiroshima resident during the 1945 atomic bombing, developed leukemia due to radiation. Inspired by an old legend, she folded a thousand paper cranes for her wish of peace. Despite her efforts, she passed away at 12 in 1955. Today, Sadako and the paper crane symbolize peace, hope, and a nuclear-free world. Our small origami crane pendant honors Sadako's perseverance and message. It reminds us of nuclear weapons' tragic impact and the need for peace. Wearing it carries Sadako's spirit and hope for a better future. Let's unite 87 years after WWII's end, remembering, cherishing, and working toward a world free from atomic devastation.

I found this toy soldier on the ground while camping, not sure where it went now but said a prayer for our troops. I just saw Oppenheimer!!! #Oppenheimer #supportourveterans #woke #wokeism #stopfascism #protecthumanrights from my own reflection, the lesson of WWII is that our higher selves must support human rights.....coming from a military family I know the truma of war, it's hurt men and everyone and everything. Peace and war are part of life. Remember what they were fighting for in both times. WWII embodied our victory over fascism. FASCISM IS DANGEROUS and takes away rights day by day until that person is gone. Fascism throws labels on people and ideas without doing homework or even caring about the actual truth...... "this is woke" "this is marxist" "this is this" "this is that".....remember that Fascism is illogical and based on false ideas about people for political gain, be weary of those who do not like Woke but also acknowledge they are confused or misled or uncomfortable still to have and see the hurt that their discrimination causes...people do change, there are stories of certain Nazi Soldiers and Partisans during WWII that looked the other way because they knew it was wrong, nr aware of what groups were targetted by fascists:.......Black People, Jewish People, immigrants, people of Roma and Senti ancestry, people of different faiths, the LGBTQIA community, people of different political ideologies (democratic socialists, communists, trade unions, intellectuals and artists, suspicious of teachers and education, freedom of press and freedom of access to books!)......watch Oppenheimer! It will bring up a lot of memories about WWII and the victory over fascism #supportourtroops #remember #rememberingwwii

There was a new twist to the observance of Father’s Day in 1943.  The National Father’s Day Council designated May 20 to June 20 as Father’s Month and launched a billion dollar War Bond drive to culminate on June 20th.  All the power of Father’s Day publicity was concentrated on this one aim.  The slogan was “33 million fathers: Buy 33 million bonds.” Every father in the land was urged to buy at least one bond during that period and one extra bond. The council believed that all that would be needed to gain this billion mark would be to focus their efforts upon the simple, human appeal to every father to buy extra bonds.  It was universally felt that by the second war-time Father’s Day, American fathers should be honored by dedicating the event to winning the war.  Since fathers throughout the land played such an important part in the war, directing and fighting it on the war fronts, supporting it in the factories and on the home front, it was only fitting that Father’s Day 1943, should be an all-out win-the-war occasion.   What better way for American fathers and their families than to show their determination by buying War Bonds–a billion of them–extra War Bonds. Swipe to see an ad from this campaign. May 8th marks the anniversary of the end of World War II in Germany. On this day in 1945, German forces officially surrendered to the Allied Powers, bringing an end to the war in Europe. The significance of this day in Germany is complex and multi-layered. For many Germans, May 8th represents a day of liberation from the oppressive Nazi regime and the end of a devastating war that had brought untold suffering to their country. However, it is also a day of mourning and reflection, as it marks the beginning of a new era of hardship and division. After the war, Germany was occupied by Allied forces and split into two parts - the democratic Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) and the communist German Democratic Republic (East Germany). The country would remain divided for over four decades, with the Berlin Wall becoming a symbol of the Cold War division between East and West. For many Germans, May 8th is also a reminder of the guilt and shame associated with their country's role in the war and the atrocities committed under the Nazi regime. The Holocaust, in which six million Jews were systematically murdered, remains a particularly painful and shameful chapter in German history. In recent years, May 8th has become a day of commemoration and reflection in Germany, with events held across the country to remember the victims of the war and the Nazi regime. It is a day to honor the sacrifices of those who fought against fascism and to reaffirm Germany's commitment to peace, democracy, and human rights. In conclusion, the anniversary of the end of World War II on May 8th holds a complex and multi-layered significance for Germans. While it marks the end of a devastating war and the liberation from Nazi oppression, it also serves as a reminder of the country's dark past and the need to continue striving towards a better future. #WWIIEurope #WWIIVictory #May8th #EndOfTheWar #WWIIMemorial #AlliedPowers #SurrenderDay #RememberingWWII #NeverForget #LestWeForget #PeacefulFuture #RemembranceDay #WorldWar2 #WarAndPeace #EndOfAnEra #WWIIGermany #NaziRegime #HolocaustRemembrance #WorldAtWar #WeWillRememberThem #HonorTheFallen #FreedomDay #MemorialDay

The German Kriegsmarine has been greatly studied from the naval point of view, and in particular, from the point of view of its submarine force and larger naval vessels, while its service, ground, and security detachments have often been forgotten by historians. This is mainly because of the simple fact that the majority of these service, ground, and security units are not thought of as constituting combat units by most people interested in researching WWII. This is an entirely false assumption. Although many of these units did not serve in frontline combat, many others did, some as their main function such as the Marine-Artillerie-Abteilungen. Many other units were thrown into the frontline in ad-hoc units formed late in 1944-45 in a vain attempt to stave off defeat. Regardless of front-line status, almost all of these units served in a truly vital position for the Kriegsmarine and the Wehrmacht as a whole. Without their support, service, and security functions, the ground, naval, and air war in the Western Theater would have been impossible to fight. This was the story of nearly all support units of the armed forces during WWII. #kriegsmarinecoastalartillery #kriegsmarine #marineinfanterie #kmwwii #wwiiart #wwiiwehrmachtart #rememberingwwii #germansoldierwwii #30thdivisionwehrmacht #wwii #wehrmacht #soldat #reenacting #wwiireenacting #ww2 #livinghistory #germanreenacting #germanwwii #germanarmy #twwiiGermannavy #germanhistory #reenactingww2 www.feldgrau.com/WW2-German-Navy-Infantry-Divisions

Former U-Boat commander Korvettenkapitan Peter-Erich Cremer with his senior officers while commanding a tank-hunter unit in 1945. The Luftwaffe officer was Cremer’s adjutant. Cremer himself wears a Luftwaffe camouflage jacket tucked into a pair of leather trousers and his naval cap. The other two officers were standard Kriegsmarine land service uniform. The man on a right wears an unusual combination of a Close Comabt Clasp and a U-boat badge. This meant that he had taken part in at least two operational voyages in a U-Boat and in hand-to-hand fighting on land on at least 15 occasions. #kriegsmarine #marineinfanterie #kmwwii #wwiiart #art #wwiiwehrmachtart #rememberingwwii #germansailor #30thdivisionwehrmacht #wwii #soldat #reenacting #wwiireenacting #ww2 #livinghistory #germanreenacting #germanwwii #germannavy #tactical #germanhistory #reenactingww2 www.feldgrau.com/WW2-German-Navy-Infantry-Divisions

In April 1940, crews from destroyers sunk in the Narvik operation formed three small ad hoc battalions that took part in defense of the Norwegian port alongside German mountain troops. They were led by their own officers and armed with weapons taken from the Norwegian 6th Division’s arsenal, which had been overrun by the mountaineers. But as soon as the operation was concluded, these units were dissolved and the men became sailors again. During the Battles of Narvik (9 April - 8 June 1940) shipwrecked sailors of the Kriegsmarine fought alongside Gebirgsjager and Fallschirmjager. To commemorate the event a special armshield was issued to veterans. Pic-1 The white metal version was issued to the mountain troops and paratroopers and the brass coloured version to the sailors. Pic-2 &3 Mixed groups of mountain troops, paratroopers, and sailors. Pic-4 General Dietl reviews a parade of Narvik veterans. The armshield is clearly visible on the nearest seamen. HBT Since the heavy wool feldgrau uniform proved to be oppressively hot in summer weather, especially in southerly latitudes, soldiers took to wearing their lightweight green fatigue uniforms in the heat. In about 1942 the Army regularized the practice: depots began issuing an official hot-weather four-pocket field uniform of feldbluse cut but made of the same reed-green HBT material. Two models were approved for use in the Army, the first that was designed after the M40 feldbluse and a later model that removed the front pocket pleats and pocket flap scallops similar to the M43. From 1943 a double-breasted version based on the Panzerjacke was made for vehicle and assault gun crews. SS units never had an official unique summer uniform, and while some used the Army versions, most used the earlier dyed work fatigues without insignia. While commissioned officers did have bespoke summer uniforms made, there was no regulation summer field uniform. hbt #summeruniform #reedgreen #feldblusen #rememberingwwii #mp40 #germansoldier #30thdivisionwehrmacht #wwii #heer #wehrmacht #soldat #reenacting #wwiireenacting #ww2 #livinghistory #germanreenacting #germanwwii #germanarmy #tactical #germanhistory #reenactingwwii

This past weekend @f.aithvickers and I were invited to help open the new “Trailblazing a Masculine Institution” exhibit at the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center with the first female chaplain in the United States Armed Forces, Dianna Pohlman. In the video interview that accompanies the exhibit, I spoke for the experience of Margaret Anderson who was born in Duluth and joined the WAVES to become a Gunnery Instructor for the Navy, retiring from the service as a LTJG. What an honor to have my knowledge featured alongside the experience of Dianna, who spoke about what it was like to break into one of the last “boys club”-type jobs in the service. And she’s such a lovely person, too. I could have spent hours more talking to her. . Faith did fantastic for her very first event. She’s taken to living history like a fish to water and what a joy to watch the next generation take up a passion for history! Truly, this is why I reenact. I have met so many people and enjoyed so many experiences that give me such joy and make me feel alive that I would have never experienced otherwise. I’m looking forward to more events this year, I think it’s going to be a good one. ⚓️🌊 . #reenacting #reenactorsofinstagram #reenactorlife #rememberingwwii #rememberingvietnameravets #womeninwwii #ww2history #navalhistory #womeninhistory #womeninthenavy #wwiiwaves #wavesandspars #strongwomen #trailblazers #amazingwomen #richardibongveteranshistoricalcenter #supportsmallmuseums #perfectweekend #thisiswhatidoforfun

"A Memoria" [ This is probably the place, where I first learned that there are wars in this world. With my aunts and cousins we often came here to the "giardinetti" - little gardens - here in #Roccadaspide. There is a monument, there is a list of names on the wall. Probably I could barely read at the time we first came here, but we came here many many times over the years. Names, with familiar surnames, typical for the surroundings, of the people of Roccadaspide who fell during WWII. As a little kid of course, I did not understand what WWII and what a war really meant and means. Not even now, I can fully understand what being in war really means....honestly. We, from afar and not directly involved, cannot imagine, cannot really feel what people who have to go through these unphantomable horrors and pain are feeling and are actually going through... In spite of this, even as a child it hurt me to learn that people kill each other. Even now, where I should "understand" something more, I cannot make any sense of this. Nobody can, at least no one who is not blinded by hate and brainwashed by the evil. I do not remember who explained to me what this monument stood and stands for, but I do remember that it impressed me a lot to read all those names on the wall. And the shapes of the pigeon and the man in helmet have left a relevant inprint in my memories. And among these totally sad and devastating things there is this fact that we humans build monuments to remember these horrors and to remember the people who were killed by all the hate these wars spread and caused. We erect monuments "to remember" ("A Memoria") and not even a moment later we go and kill again, commit the very same crimes, here, around the corner, over the Mediterranean and over the oceans. In every corner of the world we are ready to kill again over and over. What a horrible and hypocrite species we are!! No monuments will ever heal us and cleanse our consciousness. We should finally do what we write, what we say. And truly remember, not only write it in stone and live it there to get bleached in the sun. ]

With the life we lead in today’s world, it can be difficult to fully understand how life was during World War II. In this series of posts entitled, By the Numbers, we shed some light on the reality of World War II by providing some eye opening statistics. -16 million American men fought in the war -2.4 million American men were in the Air Force by 1944 -250,000 pilots graduated from Air Force training by the end of the War -1.25 million American men in air force overseas by VE Day These statistics can be overwhelming, but they can be a tool for learning. This is my impression of petty officer third class Chester Hack, USCG. I remember with great fondness growing up with "grandpa Chet" and listening to his stories as a boy. He was actually my great grandfather and served as a signalman on the LST 763 in the Pacific Theater. This was my first time wearing this impression and it will definitely not be the last. While Commonwealth will always be my primary focus, this impression holds a very special place in my heart. The versatile MG 34 was chambered for the full-power 7.92×57mm Mauser rifle cartridge, and was arguably the most advanced machine gun in the world at the time of its deployment. The MG 34 was envisaged and well developed to provide portable light and medium machine gun infantry cover, anti-aircraft coverage, and even sniping ability. Its combination of exceptional mobility – being light enough to be carried by one man – and high rate of fire (of up to 900 rounds per minute) was unmatched. It entered service in great numbers from 1939. Nonetheless, the design proved to be rather complex for mass production, and was supplemented by the cheaper and simpler to mass produce MG 42, though both remained in service and production until the end of the war. #mg34gunner #mg34machinegun #mg34 #mg34wwii #wwii #heer #wehrmacht #spidersights #antiaircraft #history #rememberingwwii #germany #firepower #raininglead

Now that you’ve met us, we’re going to ask another question! We will be asking each of the girls: What is your favorite impression, and why? Our first to answer this question is Sydney! @dudewomansally “My favorite impression, as of right now, is just your typical 1940s civilian! Being newer to the reenacting community, I find the civilian impression much easier to achieve accuracy. Women who stayed home and helped the home front were just as important as those who served. These women worked in factories building aircraft/guns/other military goods, held scrap drives to collect household items that would help with the building of military goods (rubber, aluminum, etc), worked on farms building victory gardens since food rationing was a common practice during that time, and much more that contributed to us winning the war! While I plan to branch out with my impressions eventually, my goal is to get a stellar WAVES impression. Introducing Lissa @lissajbird, here’s her reply to our question: What do you love about history? “My love of history started with a love of fashion. Living history at the start, gave me a reason to find and wear the amazing suits and dress. The details and craftsmanship still get me!! I had always wanted to own Chanel, so I learned about her, and her during ww2... Then it was vogue and Lee Miller (and all other female war coraspondents). Then the lilli ann brand (the suit im wearing here) and what they did to help Europe post war. So simply put I loved fashion and pretty things, that got me hooked! I fell in love with the garments, and the lives of the people who made them, and women who made them famous.” #wearethecatsmeow #WW2 #womenofww2 #ww2reenactment #womenreenactors #1940s #1940sfashion #vintagewomen #vintagefashion #history #welovehistory #aboutus #rememberingwwii #fashionhistory #vintagecollector #introductions #rememberinghistory #welovehistory #womeninhistory #lilliann #chanel #vintagedesigners #postwar

My vintage and reenactor friends have started a new Instagram! Please follow us @thecatsmeow_ww2girls : Tell us what you love about history Jessica? “My fascination with history began with my interest in art history and museums. As a child, I really enjoyed looking at paintings of people in their clothing and environments throughout history. Because I loved this clothing so much, I started to collect it myself and wear it too, becoming a walking piece of history! Every time I wear a vintage garment (my collection spans from 1850 to 1970) history calls to me. I feel like I’m reliving the garments glory days as I bring it to life again, continuing its history. I expanded my love of history as I grew older by working at museums in their fashion clothing collections. Here I was thrilled to learn where each came from and who it was worn by. I feel like every garment has a story to tell, and I love to find out about its journey through time. I enjoy researching strange tidbits that we would find odd today or seeing how different trends have changed as times have become more modern. Every garment or uniform I add to my collection is another reason to research times gone by. I have many favorite eras, but the 1940s is probably my number one. It is one of the most fascinating parts of history to research. Women were given new roles and responsibilities in a completely different way than they were before or after the war, whether it be on the home front or in the military. Researching this juxtaposition of women’s roles gives us insight into how times evolve when needs must. This make do and mend attitude is something that I’ve always tried to achieve in my modern life. I’m so thrilled to be amongst these women who have such a passion and love for history as I do. I hope that we can continue to educate all on women’s history. We can learn so much from these brave women of the past, and create a brighter future as we move ahead in time!” #wearethecatsmeow #WW2 #womenofww2 #ww2reenactment #womenreenactors #1940s #1940sfashion #vintagewomen #vintagefashion #rememberingwwii #fashionhistory #vintagecollector #introductions #rememberinghistory #welovehistory
