Darkness Calls the Tiger by Janyre Tromp Synopsis: After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Imperial Japan devours the southern portion of Burma, intent on taking over mainland Asia. Unaware of the coming darkness, Kailyn Moran drifts in her role as the only daughter of a widowed missionary. As whispers of war snake through the Kachin mountains, Kai’s father is convinced God will protect the mission. He entrusts the village to her and the kind yet inexperienced new missionary, Ryan McDonough, while he makes routine visits to neighboring villages. War descends like a tempest upon the mountain peaks, and an unbreakable bond forms between Kailyn and Ryan as they unite to provide solace to both villagers and the flood of refugees. Despite their tireless efforts, a brutal enemy shatters almost everything they love, pushing Kailyn to embark on a path of unrestrained vengeance. Afraid he’s losing the woman he loves, Ryan fights to protect Kai from the deadly consequences of her choices. But in the face of destruction, can he convince her of the power and freedom of forgiveness? I started this book a couple weeks ago, but I have had to set it down for now. Between the end of the school year madness and getting everything set for our vacation, my mind has not been able to focus on heavier books. What I’ve read so far I have really enjoyed, but this is the kind of book that requires more focus than I have to give right now. I will be coming back to it as soon as life settles down again. I’m a huge fan of WWII fiction and with this set in Burma - a country I haven’t read anything set in, I know this will be a huge win for me. Thank you @uplitreads and @kregelbooks for the #gifted copy. ● Book Tour & Review! Darkness Calls The Tiger • Janyre Tromp Pub date: 5.14.2024  Thank you so much to @uplitreads @kregelbooks and author @janyretromp for the #gifted physical copy and e-arc of this book to read and review!   The World War 2 invasion of Burma by Imperial Japan is not a period of time that I have ever read about in historical fiction. I was immediately drawn to the synopsis because of this fresh angle for me and also because of the subject of mission work to the people of Burma.  Missionaries are heroes.  Seeing the threat of decimation and destruction of these small mountain villages through the eyes of the missionaries called to this region was emotional and inspirational. John, Kailyn & Ryan’s story is captivating as we watch their love for the Kachin people result in heart-pounding acts of self-sacrifice, service and protection. Their impossible calling and journey grows their faith both spiritually and personally, with each other!  This was an absolutely stunning and lyrical book about the choices we make, courage, the difficult act of forgiveness and the even more difficult act to trust in the darkest of times that God’s goodness will always win.  And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28) 📖 Summary in comments .... #DarknessCallsTheTiger #JanyreTromp #KregelPublications #UplitReadsCampaign

I have not read many World War II stories set in Burma, so this was incredibly fascinating. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ It is shortly after the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor, and they have set their sights on taking over Mainland Asia, which includes Burma. ⁣ ⁣ Kai, a young missionary’s daughter, grew up among the Kachin people. She has become a fierce warrior, though her father believes God will protect the mission. Ryan is the newest missionary to arrive and is assigned to visit the neighboring villages. ⁣ ⁣ The violence and horror of war creep into their jungle, and Kai and Ryan try to fight against it, helping the villagers - while not losing their faith.⁣ ⁣ While the writing here is stunning, vivid, and lyrical, the subject matter is very difficult, as war is filled with unimaginable atrocities. You will feel an urgent sense of survival. It’s haunting as Kai and Ryan sneak through the jungle to save the people against this cruel enemy. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Yet, the truth of mercy and forgiveness rings clear—don’t let evil overtake us. There is love and hope and the question of why these things are happening. But the story masterfully shows how light can shine even in the darkest of places. The overall message is beautiful and positive, making this a remarkable read.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ 🌏𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑐𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑 𝑡𝑎𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒?⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #darknesscallsthetiger #Janyretromp #Uplitreads #historicalfiction #historicalsuspense #WWIIfiction #warstory #bookstagram #bookreview #booktour #bookphotography #ilovebooks #readingtime #booklover #bookworm #bibliophile #booksofinstagram #instabooks #IGreads #bookish#aapibooks #readabook #books⁣ ⁣

This isn’t your average missionary kid story. When her village in Burma is destroyed by the Japanese, Kai feels responsible for the attack… and the failure to protect the people she loves. Knowing she can’t go back, she embraces the legend of the Sharaw... the curse of the tiger eyes. Empowered by revenge, Kai uses the Sharaw to set guerrilla attacks against the Japanese, but specifically the man who tortured her best friend. Rumors run rampant as her fame grows, with the Americans wanting to find her as an ally and the Japanese wanting to erase her. Some say she has a tiger tail… but inside, she’s just a hurting girl determined to never be dependent on anyone again. I absolutely loved reading Darkness Calls the Tiger by Janyre Tromp! And I’m not just saying that 😂 She took a fascinating spin on the jungle missionary child, mixed with a unique perspective on WWII, survival instincts and themes of forgiveness. Tosca Lee described it perfectly when she said: “Darkness Calls the Tiger is a story of redemption in the midst of hopelessness.” Kai reminds me of a mix of Katniss (from the Hunger Games) and Kya (from Where The Crawdads Sing). If you’ve read either of those books, it’ll give you a good idea of the main character you’d looking at (also hilarious that all their names start with K 🤣) This book made such an awesome read and felt so unique! ⇒ Giveaway – (1) winner will receive a signed book, bookmark, and a few other book-themed goodies! ⇒ TO ENTER ⇒ LIKE, SAVE, and SHARE this post ⇒ FOLLOW @anna_galicinski @KregelBooks @justreadtours ⇒ TAG a friend (up to 3x per post) ⇒ VISIT each hosted post of this tour for more entries. 🐅 Book Review 🐅 Darkness Calls The Tiger by @janyretromp Action packed, extremely raw and multilayered— this historical fiction novel is set in the dark jungles and in remote villages of Burma and the China-Burma-India theatre during what history calls WWII’s “Forgotten War.” Each chapter is told through the eyes of either Kai - missionary daughter turned fierce warrior or Ryan - the inexperienced new missionary who takes on the role of protector when brutal attacks are carried out against their village. Their stories intertwine and unite throughout highlighting incredible courage, sacrifice, deeply rooted love, devastating heartbreak, forgiveness and human resilience. In other words, it’s an astonishingly beautiful yet difficult story. I’m thankful to the author for taking on this part of history and giving it to us. From the first page to the last, I was lost in their world. I could feel, touch and experience history in the most mesmerizing and tangible way. The jungles, mountains: rugged and steep and the rushing, dangerous rivers were made alive through the authors evocative storytelling. Because of the brutality and violence of this war— it is difficult to read in parts. But, because of the hardships and horrors, God’s mercy and message is all the more precious and powerful. Read if you enjoy: Descriptive and lyrical writing Lesser known stories and events in history Learning about different cultures, traditions and folklore. Missionary stories Survival stories Revenge to forgiveness Tragedy to ultimate triumph and healing Rays of light and hope filtering through extreme darkness Slow burn romance Don’t forget to read the authors note at the end! It will cause you to look further into the real events and people that inspired and paved the way to this incredible story!! Content: no language. Intense storyline, Death, rape (off page) atrocities of war, death/killings/murder inc. children and loved ones, descriptive injuries, trauma, self inflicted harm (cutting). Thank you to @kregelbooks & @janyretromp for a #gifted copy of the book for my honest review. Q: Share a novel you’ve read that you’ll never forget!

⭐️⭐⭐️⭐️⭐ ⓑⓞⓞⓚ ⓡⓔⓥⓘⓔⓦ 📚 Darkness Calls the Tiger by Janyre Tromp  Thank you to @janyretromp for the gifted book.  This is a captivating book that I absolutely loved. It's a powerful story of vengeance, forgiveness, and trust set in Burma during World War II.  Kailyn (Kai) is the daughter of a widowed missionary living in a small village in Burma. When her father leaves to attend to another village, he leaves Ryan, a newly installed missionary, in charge. As they navigate the invasion of the Japanese Imperial Army into Burma, Kai's world shatters as all the people she loves are taken from her, leading her to seek vengeance. Along the way, she reunites with Ryan. The story revolves around her struggle to trust Ryan and his love and to choose between forgiveness and vengeance. I found the intense emotions and the perilous fight against the Imperial Army to be written with such emotion. The description of the Kachin mountains and Kai’s life living in those mountains is beautifully portrayed. The author's writing is exquisite and does a tremendous job of pulling the reader into this heartbreaking world of Burma. The tenderness with which she describes the pain of war, death, and hunger is truly moving. The faith of the characters as they struggled to trust in God was also quite poignant. If you enjoy historical fiction, I highly recommend this novel. It's available now, so go buy it! 🐅 Book Review 🐅 Thank you to @janyretromp @netgalley and @kregelbooks for this #gifted book!* ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Title: Darkness Calls the Tiger Author: Janyre Tromp Genre: Christian Historical Fiction ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Synopsis: “ ‘I am Sharaw…whether you like it or not…I will never, never stop fighting.’ Not even for you.” Kailyn is the daughter of a missionary in Burma during WW2. Ryan serves alongside her father and is eventually given the responsibility to lead and protect their village as Kai’s father leaves to help others. As the Japanese soldiers descend on their home, Ryan and Kai do everything they can to protect the village and the people they love. But with the brutality of war, their world is utterly destroyed. Separated and taking different paths, Ryan and Kai seek to deal with the trauma that’s unfolded in their lives: one by helping the Allies, the other by taking revenge. As their feelings for each other evolve, Ryan hopes to help Kai see that revenge won’t heal the hurt. Will Kai fall to the darkness inside of her or seek healing through forgiveness, love, and redemption? Analysis: Darkness Calls the Tiger is a brand new look at Christian historical fiction. Janyre Tromp brings us a novel set in the Forgotten War during WW2. You’ll find yourself hiding and hunting through the jungles of Burma. The book felt much like watching a very well-made war movie. Ryan and Kai fight against real human emotions that explore what war was like in this specific theater, alongside their personal struggles when it comes to identity, self-worth, and love. While the first half of the book was a lot of background, the second half was gripping with seeing what would happen to the characters and how they would heal from the trauma they faced. This book is a tough read with the brutality of war, death, and all the emotions that the characters face. But I think these pages tell a beautiful, untold story of forgiveness and redemption. Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ *I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest review. Darkness Calls the Tiger by Janyre Tromp // An emotionally gripping read that brings the gritty realities of how WWII touched Burma to life in this heart wrenchingly beautiful story of redemption and forgiveness.  A wonderfully evocative and well researched read that transported me to the jungles of Burma. A heavier read, with a powerful message of hope through it all. Truly a story that sticks with you, beautifully written with care taken on the more difficult parts of the story.  Overall, an inspiring story of hope and the power of God to change a life. I loved the artful use of the tiger throughout, and the friendship between Kailyn and Ryan. Highly recommend this gripping read! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. https://labornotinvain.blogspot.com/2024/05/darkness-calls-tiger-by-janyre-tromp.html #darknesscallsthetiger #janyretromp #kregelbooks #justreadtours #historicalfiction

#happyreleaseday #bookreview “The only thing you can do is make a choice about how you’ll respond now. Revenge or love. Anger or trust.” I have to admit the gorgeous cover is what first drew me to this book, but it’s the heartachingly beautiful story within that kept me quickly turning the pages. Set during WWII in the little known China-India-Burma theater, this powerful tale of love, loss, revenge, & forgiveness grabbed hold & didn’t let go. It’s the story of a missionary’s daughter who faces unthinkable odds as she & newly arrived missionary Ryan McDonough fight to protect her Himalayan Kachin village from Japanese invaders. Kailyn Moran was told at a young age she’d become a vengeful tiger-person who’d die alone. Later, as an adult, her father leaves her & an inexperienced missionary from Texas in charge of the village with the threat of Japanese soldiers on the horizon. After experiencing violence, betrayal & death, Kai transforms herself into the vengeful tiger persona she was predicted to become & embarks on a brutal campaign against the soldiers who destroyed her village. After losing track of Kai, Ryan joins the American military in India & returns to find the legendary Sharaw whom the Japanese soldiers fear. Facing death, destruction, & the painful tragedy of war, Ryan finds Kai & together they fight both the surrounding enemy & the enemy within. This story really impacted me. I enjoyed the message of choosing trust & forgiveness. Kai experiences unimaginable loss & makes the wrong choices, but as she reconnects with those she loves, she finds hope & peace in forgiveness. I loved the beautiful prose & the way the author conveyed such a range of emotions. Kai’s anger & desire for revenge were so understandable & palpable. I loved the metaphor of becoming a tiger & how her thirst for vengeance became animalistic. But, she’s not beyond reach & I loved how Ryan, with his own losses & hardships, fights to help the woman he loves. The story & setting were so compelling & well written. I found myself on pins & needles as Kai & Ryan hide from their enemies. Highly recommend this stirring, unforgettable book! Thanks to @janyretromp for gifted copy!

Happy Pub Day!  #gifted @austenprose @authornataliejenner @uplitreads @janyretromp Two more great new books to share! Darkness Calls the Tiger: Isn't this a great title? This is a novel of WW2 Burma.Japan's invasion of Burma has dark consequences for the daughter of a missionary when the village she loves is overtaken. Driven with a need for vengeance, will she lose herself to it, or can the man she loves help her find power in forgiveness? This is an area of WW2 fiction that I've not read about before and I'm excited to read this novel inspired by true stories. Every Time We Say Goodbye: I'm currently reading this one, which continues with some familiar characters from the author's previous novel Bloomsbury Girls. It's set in 1955, and follows Vivien Lowry's transition from London playwright to script editor for Rome's Cinecitta Studios. I'm about halfway into this one, and I'm finding it interesting to get a peek at post WW2 Italy and how influences from Mussolini's old government still hold sway, along with the unyielding power of the Vatican.  #EveryTimeWeSayGoodbye #NatalieJenner #Austenprosepr #DarknessCallsTheTiger #JanyreTromp #Burma #ww2 #ww2fiction #historicalfiction #historicalnovel #histfic #newbooks #springreads #bibliophile #newbook #tbr #whattoreadnext #pubday #bookrecs #goodreads #igbooks #bookgram #instabooks

✨Happy Pub Day & Book Review ✨ - Darkness Calls the Tiger by Janyre Tromp - 🐅 Lyrically stunning, adrenaline pumping, and gut wrenching. It’s intense, it’s impactful, and it’s something like I’ve never read before. 🐅 I got so lost in the story and the connection to the characters-especially Kai and Ryan. From the missionary fields to the jungle of war torn Burma to fighting the Japanese. War is brutal and this book takes you through it. 🐅 I deeply felt for these characters and their struggles. Mostly, I thought- how did anyone even make it through such a time? Their path to survival is equally devastating and triumphant. I cannot even fully explain what I read, but I know I have not encountered another book like this one. It’s an epic saga, one to experience and absorb. You will feel smack dab in the middle of the jungle with these characters and they become family. You hope for their survival, you cheer for them, and cry for them. Be prepared to need a box of Kleenex and a hug from your significant other. 🐅Tears and heartbreak. Revenge and redemption. Finally, forgiveness and peace. So much in the details of this story. This will be one of my top books this year. Beyond stunning piece of literature. Do check trigger warning as the topics are very heavy. This book is brilliant and it’s a complete 5 star read for me! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Available now! ❓QOTD: This book has such a gorgeous and eye catching cover. What is the most recent book you’ve picked up based on cover alone? ✨A big thank you to @janyretromp & @uplitreads for the #gifted copy and including me on this tour. #darknesscallsthetiger #janyretromp #uplitreads #historicalfiction #fivestarreads #emotionalreads #fictionbooks #happypubday #bookrelease #bookreleaseday #coverart #bookstagram #fivestarread #booktour #booktours #beautifulbook

Historical fiction lovers: 3 days left to preorder this incredible story, based on many true stories gathered from the World War II historical files of Burma. I read an advance copy last month, I don't know about you, but I don't recall hearing anything about Burma in WWII! Posted a review on Goodreads but here's the short version: a well-done piece of an amazing and little known story with riveting action, especially in the second section. Primarily a story about the war’s impact on the main character, Kailyn Moran, only daughter of a widowed missionary, and the village they lived in. When a handsome young new missionary Ryan arrives, he disappoints Kailyn’s father, but awakens love in Kailyn. The villagers giggle at his ineptitude, except for one young boy adores him for his kindness. Section One set up the history, culture, and characters of the Burmese mountain/jungle village. It opens with a legend that will become critical in Section Two. Fasten your seat belt and be inspired! #darknesscallsthetiger #janyretromp

Releasing May 14th. This is easily one of the best books I have read this year! Darkness Calls the Tiger is an incredibly powerful story. Historical fiction is my favorite genre and I read a lot of WWII fiction. Ms. Tromp chose to set this story in the rarely-used Pacific setting of Burma. While fictional, this story is a tribute to the unsung heroes and missionaries who were trapped behind enemy lines in the Pacific Theater. Ms. Tromp's vivid prose gave a strong sense of place, bringing the jungle setting to life. She does not shy away from the realities and atrocities of war, but points readers towards light. I was captivated by the expert plot pacing as Kailyn and Ryan fight to survive, to aid the villagers and refugees, to fight the Japanese. But it was the character development I found compelling. I couldn't help but commiserate with the characters as they questioned "do you ever wonder why evil doesn't stop?" The emotions of Ms. Tromp's characters, their beliefs, motivation and fears were so real. Kailyn and Ryan's faith journey to forgive, trust and love will tug on readers' heartstrings. A favorite quote: "...trusting life to be good in the light ain't nothing. But if you have to trust in the dark, that is faith." A must read for fans of historical fiction. #janyretromp #darknesscallsthetiger #kregelpublications

I was blessed to be able to read this book early and also to be able to spread the word on how amazing it is. I was moved by this story, so much so that I had trouble writing the review. I couldn't find words that matched to how beautiful it truly was. This month’s ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read: I had the privilege of reading an advanced copy of Darkness Call The Tiger by @janyretromp, and y’all, I have yet to read a book by Janyre that wasn’t a five-star read, but this one BLEW me away. I’ve wondered if my infatuation with her last release, Shadows In The Mind’s Eye (easily one of my favorite books 2023), was a bit inflated by my personal connection to the content. I wasn’t totally sure how much this WWII era story set in Burma would draw me in, but I knew I love Janyre’s writing and I was excited to give it a try. 😳I read it in less than 48 hours—probably much to my family’s dismay😅 I’ll have a full review to come on my GoodReads page (link in bio), but trust me when I say this is one you want to PREORDER! And while you’re at it, go read Shadows In the Mind’s Eye too😘 If you’re a fan of historical fiction with a masterful blend of mystery and romance, you will love Janyre Tromp’s books! #newlifeediting #fivestarfriday #kregelpublications #janyretromp #darknesscallsthetiger #⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

📚Backlist Review📚 This is one of the first books to catch my eye when I became immersed in the bookstagram world. And I’ll admit I should have never put it off so long! Stories like this really draw me in and keep my attention rapt. Stories about soldiers returning home after sacrificing their bodies, mentally and physically, of the families waiting at home for the joyous return, and the strength it takes for all to adjust and sometimes just exist. With Shadows in the Mind’s Eye you get all that and so much more. There are a multitude of feelings and circumstances that the reader experiences. You have the happiness of a reunited family, but the sadness of the toll of war. You witness the struggle, the doubt, the pain. There is faith and forgiveness. Learning to trust and to love again. And then a suspenseful layer is added to this fantastic story with a mystery to solve and danger that lurks just beyond waiting to destroy all the has been brought together. Janyre wrote an amazing debut and I’m already hearing wonderful things about her upcoming release. I found this book on Hoopla. I highly recommend the audio with its duel narration. #shadowsinthemindseye #janyretromp #suspensebooks #historicalfiction #christianfiction #christianhistoricalfiction #bookstagram

☆ARC Review☆ Thank you @janyretromp Publication Date: 05-14-2024 Darkness Calls the Tiger Janyre Tromp *After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the southern portion of Burma is devoured by Imperial Japan. Japan is determined to take over the Asia mainland. Unaware of the darkness that’s coming, Kailyn Moran plays her role as the daughter of a widowed missionary. Rumors of war reach the Kachin mountains but Kai’s father is convinced God will protect them. Kai’s father entrusts the village to her and a kind but inexperienced new missionary, Ryan McDonough, while he makes his routine visits to neighboring villages. War rains down on the mountain forging a bond between Kai and Ryan as they fight to bring solace to the villagers and the flood of refugees. Despite their efforts an enemy destroys almost everything they hold dear. This turn of events pushes Kai on a path for vengeance. Ryan fears he’s losing the woman he loves and sets out to protect Kai from the consequences of her choices that could prove to be deadly. Ryan must convince Kai to forgive. TW: child death, animal attack, graphic war images, violence *This was a unique read. The author blends the message of Christianity with the cultural legend of the villagers. This was not a lighthearted read but an intense tale of survival and redemption. Kai loses her faith and embarks on a mission of revenge embracing the role of sharaw. Ryan tracks her and hopes to save her from her self-destructive choices. The story is told from dual points of view following Kai and Ryan as they navigate the dangers of war and their own personal quests. The author’s descriptive writing style captures the gruesome brutality of war, the need for revenge, and the path to healing. While this book was not my cup of tea I won’t discourage others from reading this for themselves.
