Thank you to all the amazing people who have reviewed Eye Contact Over Truk. Head over to the link in my bio to get your copy! A reader review: "This isn't the usual genre of book that I typically read, but I found it quite engrossing. There is a depth to the characters' inner worlds that I found satisfying and rich, providing insight into what it would be like to both be in a war, and the civilians affected by war. I really appreciated the respect the story gave to the Japanese who experienced WWII, and the details and understanding of the aftermath on both Truk, and in Japan. It's not the thinned down version many of us were taught in school. Eye Contact Over Truk has left me pondering the realities of what those people went through, and given me a slice of an answer to a question I've often had - what did the WWII vets go through? I've known a few, and they never spoke of their experiences. The ending of the book was quite satisfying, and the diving scenes were fun to read!" #historicalfictionbooks #historicalbooks #emotionalread #wwiifiction #wwiibook #poetsandwriters #bookcase #bookcollection #ReferenceBook #debutauthor #debutauthors #myfirstbook #booklaunch #booklaunching #booklaunch2024 #newauthor #newauthoralert #booksale #firsttimeauthor #onwriting #mywriting #myfirstbook #woodmanbooks #eyecontactovertruk

🌊REVIEW🌊 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 The beauty, the heart & soul of this book lies in its characters. #BeyondThatTheSea was one of my #24in2024 picks and I am so glad I listened to it. Kudos @laura_spence_ash on this accomplished debut. I can’t thank you enough for giving us this gem of a book. Thanks to my lovely friends @mariesembar & @lindabalogh5077 for sharing this beautiful book journey with me! 👈 Swipe left for synopsis Oh how I adored & treasured this book! I wish I had the physical copy, so that I could hug it in the end. It offers a unique perspective to WWII & offers a coming of age story full of heart, grace, unconditional love & acceptance. It is a breath of fresh air in terms of WWII historical fiction in every sense. As mentioned earlier, this is a character driven novel that delves deep into the perspectives of a pre-teen girl, scared & confused, leaving her home to stay with a family of strangers in an unknown country. But what a family this was & how lucky was Bea to have found them! I loved Nancy Gregory the most. She is simply the most gracious, kind & affectionate woman who opened her arms & heart to Bea. Although I was weary of the boys & even Mr Gregory at the beginning, I couldn’t help but warm up to them, as the author gradually develops the dynamics between the 3 kids. The summers in the beautiful coastal Maine play a key role with how Bea bonds & develops a rapport with all the Gregorys & it was just so heartwarming to witness it all. Soon, there’s a budding romance, the immense heartache & agony of separation with Bea moving away, as we watch in awe over the years - Bea becoming a strong & independent woman. The emotional battle, the pull Bea felt with her found family & how she deals with it all were all portrayed, with such delicacy & sensitivity by the author. The relationship between Bea & her mother Millie is also explored with great care & depth. The story delivers several blows that are hard to digest, but the ending left me teary eyed, heart full with bittersweet poignancy. If there is one book you read, let it be this. ⁉Do you read coming of age/historical fiction? What was your last?

🀍🩵🀍 📖Book Review📖 5🌟 📖Book 17/100 ✹Winter Garden 💫Genre: Historical Fiction ✍Author: Kristin Hannah 🀍🩵🀍🩵🀍🩵🀍 📝Synopsis 📝 This is a breathtaking story about a woman named Veronika Petrovina Marchenko, and her hardships during WWII. How she lost, suffered, and then was given a second chance at life and love. Won’t say more to avoid spoiling it. 🀍🩵🀍🩵🀍🩵🀍 My thoughts 💭 I absolutely love how Kristin Hannah writes and although this one has a very melancholic tone to it; it’s a masterpiece🥹 I read this big book in less than 24 hours because I just couldn’t put it down and wanted to know Veronica’s story and why she was the way she was. Oh boy did it break me!!! I haven’t cried this much reading a book since probably The Nightingale and A Thousand Boy Kisses. This will forever be a favorite of mine and if I could give it 1,000 stars, I would!!! 🀍🩵🀍🩵🀍🩵🀍 QOTD: What was the last book that broke you (made you cry)? ✚🏷✚🏷✚🏷✚ #bookstagrammer #bookreviewer #bookreviews #historicalfiction #bookreview #booktok #bookrecommendation #fictionbooks #wwii #wwiibooks #wwiifiction #bookstagram #bookworms #bibliophile #qotd #qotd🌞 #wintergarden #kristinhannah

🌟🎥Book Spotlight: The Book Thief🎥🌟 Q: What are some books that you have deeply enjoyed reading and consider an all-time favourite of yours? In today’s Bookstagram #BookSpotlight, I’m highlighting one of my all-time faves: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I absolutely adore this novel and seem to enjoy it even more each time I pick it up. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend giving it a chance – it’s truly worth it! The Book Thief is set during World War II in Germany and is brilliantly narrated by Death. This unique perspective makes it a cozy yet emotional read, and it never fails to bring me to tears by the end. I love this book so much that I own over six different copies of it! It’s definitely the book I have the most copies of. 😂 Swipe to see a synopsis of The Book Thief (Slide 2), insights into the novel (Slide 3), and songs inspired by it (Slide 4). Regarding the above question, besides The Book Thief, I also deeply enjoyed The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and Fourth Wing. These are definitely among my top favourites! • Happy Friday, fellow book lovers! Yesterday was super productive, filled with learning and revising for Financial Literacy, and getting closer to finishing Addie LaRue. I also managed to pack my bags for my weekend trip home! Today’s itinerary: 📚Group presentation for Management in the morning 📚Finishing Addie LaRue 📚Evening shift from 5pm to 10pm Today also marks my last day of study for Trimester 1 before the exam period. I’m feeling a mix of excitement and nerves, but I’m looking forward to completing my two exams! Stay tuned for more updates, and may your Friday be filled with literary delights! - Readsbyella

Okay... I know I'm very late to this party, but when this book was popular I had babies. At that stage of life I was tired and only had the mental capacity to swipe candies around on an iPad screen in my spare time. Don't judge. I'm happy to report that reading is back in my world and I finally got around to "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society". I liked it. It was a little slow, but the characters are endearing and I enjoyed meeting each one. 😊 Also... Pink Hydrangeas are my favourite. 🩷 #theguernseyliteraryandpotatopeelpiesociety #wwiifiction #lovetoread #idonotplaycandycrushanymore #springtimeflowers

⭐⭐⭐.5 Princess Elizabeth's Spy- Susan Elia MacNeal . As WWII sweeps the continent and England prepares for attack, Maggie Hope becomes a spy for MI5, dreaming of undercover missions on the front lines. Instead, she is tasked with protecting Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret at Windsor. The world of Windsor is quickly thrown into disarray as a murder is discovered and suddenly, Maggie must race to unravel this mystery and save the royal family. . This was a really fast-paced and enjoyable read, a perfect historical mystery to break up all of the fantasy I've been reading recently. There were times where I felt like a chapter or POV ended very abruptly and left me confused, but otherwise I really enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to reading more of the Maggie Hope mysteries. . . . #mystery #wwiifiction #historicalfiction #maggiehope

NETGALLEY REVIEW ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Tuscan Daughter by Tessa Harris. I chose this because I recalled reading The Paris Notebook, also by this author, and I enjoyed that one. This is a WWII thriller set in Tuscany. After reading just a few chapters, I found this book had an atmosphere that I loved, and I began to lose myself in it. The protagonist, Lizzie, was a wonderful character, and I loved the bond that she shared with her pupil, Cristo. I became very emotionally invested in this story, and felt compelled to read it in one sitting. As I carried on reading, there were some moments when I became slightly tearful, and I wondered if Lizzie may have some difficult choices to make. I really liked this, and if you like historical thrillers, I would recommend it. This past weekend was a lovely long weekend here and I spent part of it immersed in this upcoming release from @madelinemmartin -- 𝘛𝘩𝘊 𝘉𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘊𝘳'𝘎 𝘓𝘪𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘺. 📚📚 After reading The Last Bookshop in London this author became an instant favorite and I've been quick to pick up all her work since then. I grabbed a copy of this newest novel from Netgalley as soon as I saw it was available, and fairly inhaled this beautiful story. Full review to come (spoiler: I absolutely loved this one!!!) but in the meantime, here's a little blurb to convince all the historical fiction fans to add this one to their TBR. 📚 𝗔𝗯𝗌𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗌𝗌𝗞: In Nottingham, England, widow Emma Taylor finds herself in desperate need of a job to provide for herself and her beloved daughter, Olivia. But with the legal restrictions prohibiting widows with children from most employment opportunities, she’s left with only one persuading the manageress at Boots’ Booklover’s Library to take a chance on her. When the threat of war becomes a reality, Olivia must be evacuated to the countryside. In her daughter’s absence, Emma seeks solace in the unlikely friendships she forms with her neighbors and coworkers, as well as the recommendations she provides to the library’s quirky regulars. But the job doesn’t come without its difficulties. Books are mysteriously misshelved and disappearing, and her work forces her to confront the memories of her late father and the bookstore they once owned together before a terrible accident. As the Blitz intensifies in Nottingham and Emma fights to reunite with her daughter, she must learn to depend on her community and the power of literature more than ever to find hope in the darkest of times. #TheBookloversLibrary is available September 2024. Thanks to @htpbooks for my advance e-copy. 𝗀𝗢𝗧𝗗: Do you read library books? How often?

Currently reading: THE PARIS LIBRARY 📚 ***** “Paris, 1939. Young, ambitious, and tempestuous, Odile Souchet has it all: Paul, her handsome police officer beau; Margaret, her best friend from England; Remy, her twin brother who she adores; and a dream job at the American Library in Paris, working alongside the library’s legendary director, Dorothy Reeder. When World War II breaks out, Odile stands to lose everything she holds dear—including her beloved library. After the Nazi army marches into the City of Light and declares a war on words, Odile and her fellow librarians join the Resistance with the best weapons they have: books. Again and again, they risk their lives to help their fellow Jewish readers, but by war’s end, Odile tastes the bitter sting of unspeakable betrayal. Montana, 1983. Odile’s solitary existence in gossipy small-town Montana is unexpectedly interrupted by her neighbor Lily, a lonely teenager craving adventure. As Lily uncovers more about Odile’s mysterious past, they find they share not only a love of language but also the same lethal jealousy. “A real hero always fights for what is right.” Filled with lots of action and nail biting moments, Alan Gratz’s novel, “Heroes” about the attack on Pearl Harbor, is sure to capture the attention and interest of young and old alike. This story follows Frank and Stanley from the day before the attack until just before Christmas with the majority of the story taking place during the actual attack. Frank, our main character and narrator, survived an incident in his former town which has left him with a paralyzingly fear of pretty much everything. Which means if you’re caught in a war zone, there are going to be some pretty major issues coming up. With a solid friendship, Frank, and Japanese American Stanley are forced to reconcile their world views and their fears in situation after situation fraught with danger. I did want to see more of the fallout for Stanley in the months after the attack, though I appreciate how and why Gratz wrote this narrative as he did. The novel allows for open and honest discussions about the treatment of Japanese Americans after the attack as well as anti- narratives we see around the world today. I really enjoyed the boys’ love for all things comic books along with their plans to one day write and illustrate their own. The inclusion of the ten page comic at the end of the novel was the perfect addition, really bringing the novel full circle. I love when a book looks at origin stories, finding courage, the making of a superhero, and how all of this can relate to real life. “Heroes” will have a large appeal for fans of both comic books and historical fiction. This (long) weekend’s #shareyourfirstpage from @bookfairies_thunderbay is from Dear Mrs. Bird by @ajpearcewrites What have you been reading? 📚About the book: This charming, irresistible debut novel set in London during World War II about a young woman who longs to be a war correspondent and inadvertently becomes a secret advice columnist is “a jaunty, heartbreaking winner” (People)—for fans of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and Lilac Girls. Emmeline Lake and her best friend Bunty are doing their bit for the war effort and trying to stay cheerful, despite the German planes making their nightly raids. Emmy dreams of becoming a Lady War Correspondent, and when she spots a job advertisement in the newspaper she seizes her chance; but after a rather unfortunate misunderstanding, she finds herself typing letters for the formidable Henrietta Bird, renowned advice columnist of Woman’s Friend magazine. THE NIGHT PORTAIT, gripping historical fiction by Laura Morelli ***** “Milan, 1492: When a 16-year old beauty becomes the mistress of the Duke of Milan, she must fight for her place in the palace—and against those who want her out. “Love is all that matters,” Signora said, turning back to the younger woman. “Life brings hardship, and pain, and more loss than you think you can survive, but in the end, love will carry you through the agony and restore the breath you need to keep living. You must have love, or you have nothing.” Amy Schisler, Whispering Vines Have you read Whispering Vines? Like so many of my books, it’s about love. It’s about the love between a man and woman (two different men and women actually), love of country, love of family, love between friends, love between parents and children, and love of and from God. Most of all, it’s about finding love for oneself and understanding who we are as individuals. Likened to Under the Tuscan Sun and A Walk in the Sun (Thomas Hollyday, reviewer and author), I promise that this book will leave you breathless and wishing for more. 📖 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I really enjoyed this one! The idea of a library built over the tracks in a tube station was intriguing! I enjoyed reading about the characters & the community the little library created. Do you like reading books based on true events? An Ocean of Courage and Fear by Jerry Borrowman is a fictional recounting of historical events and real people during WWII, specifically in the Pacific theatre. I was really fascinated by the story and the way it sort of read like a log of events, focusing on the USS Salt Lake City and some of the men and their families connected to this ship. The different point of views really brought to life what it was like for these service men during WWII and for their families. I often read historical fiction during this time set in Europe, but this was really special as it focuses on the Pacific war and the way things played out between the American and Japanese militaries. It definitely made my heart hurt, but I found it overall inspiring. I am grateful to have read this book as it just makes me appreciate even more those individuals who, past and present, sacrifice so that I may have the freedoms I enjoy. While this is a historical fiction novel focused around real events and people during WWII, I didn’t find it graphic or excessively violent, it was realistic and informative and gave me a deeper understanding and what it may have been like to be a part of the navy during this time. The Rose Code - Kate Quinn ⭐⭐⭐⭐ WWII England, three women sworn to secrecy at their code breaking jobs. Unable to discuss their secrets even with one another. Several years after the war, one of them is trapped in an asylum, drugged and silenced in order to protect someone’s secret. The estranged friends have to come together to save their own and put away the spy among them. An interesting pov for a WWII historical fiction novel, and it’s based on a true story which is always a bonus. Right after reading, I quickly gave it 5 stars. But after I’ve given it some time, I took one star away for the lack of permanence it had in my mind.

SIMPLY AMAZING The Book of Lost Names was a beautiful narrative of love, bravery, and heroism in France during WWII. I fell in love with the characters and their mission, desperately hoping for a happy ending with every turn of the pages! This was an easy ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ read! The secret to winning the war might just involve a little theft. Electra McDonnell and her family are well known at cracking a safe a d confiscating documents that aren’t their own. When they inadvertently stumble into a trap, however, Electra and her Uncle Mick are coerced into joining forces with one Major Ramsey and his team to root out German spies. Amidst suspense, mystery, and further high jinks, Ellie has to solve the puzzle of her own feelings about Major Ramsey and working hand in hand with the law. I was reluctant to start this book because I’m kind over the obsession with WWII Fiction, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed A Peculiar Combination and I definitely recommend reading it! The story was fun, charming, intriguing, and just enough romantic tension for non-spice lovers (that’s me 😉). QOTD: Yea or nay on WWII fiction? Am I the only one who wants to focus on a different time period in historical fiction now? #apeculiarcombination #wwiifiction #bookreview #historicalfiction #historicalmystery #cozyreading

BOOK TOUR REVIEW ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Weaver Street At War (Weaver Street Book 3) by Chrissie Walsh. I'm reviewing this via NetGalley, as part of a tour with Rachel's Random Resources. This is a historical saga that takes place in Liverpool during WWII. On first impressions, the protagonist, Anna, seemed like a lovely character, and I was keen to know more about her. I quickly warmed to the other characters too; they seemed warm and friendly, and I loved how the author brought Weaver Street to life, making it seem like such a homely place to live. While I was reading, I thought a little bit about the things that we may easily take for granted today, such as the items that were rationed during the war. I often find that this type of book feels like an escape, and has a strange way of making me feel a little bit nostalgic for a time and place that I never lived in. I felt that as the book progressed, several of the characters experienced something that changed them in some way and helped them to grow. I really enjoyed getting to know Anna and her friends on Weaver Street. Over the last few years, I've taken to reading more historical sagas, and I think I would be interested in reading more by this author. Thank you to NetGalley, Rachel's Random Resources, Boldwood Books, and to the author, for the opportunity to read and review this. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/6506676140 #weaverstreetatwar #chrissiewalsh #weaverstreetseries #historicalsaga #wwiifiction #boldwoodbooks #rachelsrandomresources

Book review: Green Hands (1943) by Barbara Whitton ⭐⭐⭐⭐. Green Hands is an autobiographical novel which starts in November 1943. A young Barbara and her friend Anne have arrived in rural Scotland for their first Land Army posting and are set to work throwing mangolds into a cart, which they think, can’t be that difficult can it?! They are soon to find it is back breaking work, undertaken in dark, wet and cold conditions - and all alongside the intense scrutiny of the old-timers who will be rather pleased if they don’t last the day. The reality of a shared room, no hot water, the blackouts and meagre food portions is too much for Anne who describes herself as ‘a solid lump of misery’ but Barbara is more of a stoic mother figure and gives their bleak days humour. The saving grace is a sitting room of their own to relax in at night and the odd trip to the cinema to see the latest Gary Cooper film. The book follows Barbara for a year on two of her Land Army postings, the one described above in Scotland and another at a dairy farm in Northumberland. I haven’t read anything about this aspect of the war before and I found it authentic and full of life, with lots of interesting details about the work and the living conditions of the Land Girls - of which there were 80,000 by 1943. Kyoto Japan is truly a magical city. Amazingly untouched by wars, it was Japan's capital for over 1000 years. The city's rich cultural history is spread out through the many well-maintained temples and tranquil gardens. Much like Rome and Paris, Kyoto masterfully merged its history with modern growth. I was so touched by Kyoto that I used it as one of the settings in Eye Contact Over Truk. My obviously unprofessional photos do not honor that lovely city. In this picture, I am standing in front of the Ryoan-ji Temple (which done properly would show the beautiful use of gold leaf on this entrance). I highly recommend a multi day visit there, if your travels take you to Japan. To get a quick glimpse into the majesty there, search the 17 Must-visit Temples and Shrines in Kyoto. #historicalfictionbooks #historicalbooks #japantravel #kyototrip #emotionalread #wwiifiction #wwiibook #poetsandwriters #bookcase #bookcollection #ReferenceBook #debutauthor #debutauthors #myfirstbook #onwriting #mywriting #myfirstbook #woodmanbooks

I missed #InternationalNursesDay yesterday because of Mother's Day celebrations, so my I’ll make up for it today with Sophie, my heroine, in July 1917. She’s a nurse at the American Hospital in Paris. In this excerpt from Dare Not Tell, Chapter 4, she and Joe Parker, an Australian soldier, have been corresponding for a year: Joe asked for Sophie at the reception desk at the American Hospital in Paris, shoved his hands in his pockets, and paced nervously while he waited. He hoped he hadn’t made a mistake showing up unannounced, but he was desperate to forget where he’d been for a little while. Even though the Australians had been victorious, the battle at Bullecourt last month had been bloody and costly. Like Fromelles, he’d lived through it. Like Fromelles, he couldn’t believe he’d been so lucky. His heart skipped a beat when he saw Sophie racing down the stairs, holding her nurse’s cap in place, her white uniform skirts billowing behind her. She came to a halt just in front of him, grinning. A stern-looking woman with medals decorating her left breast stalked past and glared at Sophie. All she said was, “Miss Holt,” in a commanding voice, and Sophie settled her cap, smoothed her skirts, and snapped to attention until the woman passed. His lips twitched when Sophie rolled her eyes at the departing woman’s back. He offered his hand. “Miss Holt.” She raised a brow and played along. “Second Lieu
.” She checked his shoulders. “First Lieutenant Parker. When did that happen?” “About a week ago.” “What a wonderful surprise to see you!” Sophie gave up the pretense of formality, stood on her toes, and graced him with the French greeting of a kiss on each cheek. “What are you doing here?” #WWIFiction #WWIIFiction #AustralianWarFiction #FrenchWarFiction #PacificWarFiction #HistoricalFiction #HistoricalRomance #HistFic #AustralianHistoricalFiction #FrenchHistoricalFiction #HistoricalRomance #20thCenturyHistoricalFiction #20thCenturyHistoricalRomance #WWIRomance #WWIIRomance #ElaineSchrollerAuthor #DareNotTell #TheBravestSoldiers #ImmenseSkySaga #HistoricalFictionNovel #HistoricalFictionNovels #HistoricalFictionAuthor #HistoricalFictionWriter

Qotd: What is something you don’t think you could live without? Good morning and happy Friday! Took advantage of #jewishheritagemonth to finish up my arc of @lisabarr18 Goddess of Warsaw. Goddess of Warsaw follows Lena Browning, a renown Hollywood actress who is finally ready to reveal her secrets to the world as her life is drawing to a close. Because unbeknownst to everyone Lena is actually Bina Blonski, survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto, daughter, wife, lover, actress and assassin. And before her time is done Bina has one more starring role to play This book felt like a brutal, but necessary read given the continuous rise in antisemitism in the US and around the world. It is clear that Lisa has done her research well when it came to the Warsaw Ghetto uprising and the conditions in the ghetto prior to the rising. The book isn’t gory, but it doesn’t have to be to make the reader break out into chills. Through Bina, we see what a person might be willing to do if everything they valued and saw as integral to their identity has been stripped from them. As the reader, we see the incredible courage of ordinary people in impossible circumstances. We see those who would become righteous of the nations in the characters of Stach and Petra. But in reading the Goddess of Warsaw and seeing Bina abused and taken advantage of by those who had once been her neighbors I felt like I was truly getting an answer to the question of how those living near Auschwitz could have claimed ignorance. Goddess of Warsaw not only captures the horrors of the Holocaust, but also the scars carried by survivors long after the war was over. It also touches on a major stain in US history ie its acceptance of Nazi scientists after the war. If you are looking to understand both the seeds and the horrors of the Holocaust, have a box of tissues near by, but please pick up this book. Goddess of Warsaw is out on May 28,2024. * Thank you to @netgalley and @harperperennial for sending me an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. #wwiifiction #jewishbooks #holocaustfiction #lisabarr #goddessofwarsaw #historicalfiction #booksbyfemaleauthors #neverforget #harperperennial #2024releases

📚 Book Review The Underground Library was a WWII historical fiction I picked up on a whim at the library a few weeks back. This novel was fine. I enjoyed reading it, but I don't think it will stick in my mind as a WWII historical fiction I would necessarily recommend. I wasn't really sucked into this story like I would have wanted to be. What I did like was the multiple POVs. Each of the main characters had their own struggles & triumphs. The author eloquently took on some difficult subjects. I do wish the author would have built out Marigold's character out a little more. She was one of the side characters but such an interesting one I thought was glossed over! The multiple love stories didn't feel necessary to this novel. I could have done with just one of the main characters having a love interest. ⭐ 3.75/5

⭐⭐⭐⭐🎧 This is the first WWII story that I have read where the devastation was caused by the Allied forces. I’ve never heard of this French town or what happened there and this is what I love about historical fiction. Not allowing the past and what people went through to be forgotten. I enjoyed the story and my favorite character was Elise. I found Juliette frustrating at times. I understand she couldn’t handle that level of grief and it turned to anger. I didn’t understand why that anger was directed at Elise so I was glad to see an explanation at the end. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical fiction. ❓QOTD I’m always thinking about food so when I think of France I think bread, cheese and pastry. What’s your favorite cheese or pastry? Synopsis Paris, 1939: Young mothers Elise and Juliette become fast friends the day they meet in the beautiful Bois de Boulogne. Though there is a shadow of war creeping across Europe, neither woman suspects that their lives are about to irrevocably change. When Elise becomes a target of the German occupation, she entrusts Juliette with the most precious thing in her life—her young daughter, playmate to Juliette’s own little girl. But nowhere is safe in war, not even a quiet little bookshop like Juliette’s Librairie des Rêves, and, when a bomb falls on their neighborhood, Juliette’s world is destroyed along with it. More than a year later, with the war finally ending, Elise returns to reunite with her daughter, only to find her friend’s bookstore reduced to rubble—and Juliette nowhere to be found. What happened to her daughter in those last, terrible moments? Juliette has seemingly vanished without a trace, taking all the answers with her. Elise’s desperate search leads her to New York—and to Juliette—one final, fateful time. #kristinharmel #theparisdaughter #historicalfiction #historicalfictionbooks #audiobook #wwiifiction #bookworm #bookstagrammer

I loved The Last Hope and the entire Maggie Hope mystery series! I’ve learned more about life in WWII Europe and the UK from this series than I ever did in school. As I’ve written in previous reviews, I believe MacNeal’s work should be required reading, not only to give context to the world we live in today but to more importantly show how unsung bravery can make all the difference. Book review: Nightingale by Kristin Hannah Goodreads Rating: 4.62/5 My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nightingale by Kristin Hannah is a poignant and gripping historical fiction novel set in France during World War II. The narrative centers around two sisters, Vianne Mauriac and Isabelle Rossignol who find themselves deeply impacted by the war in profoundly different ways. Vianne Mauriac is a gentle and reserved schoolteacher living in the rural village of Carriveau. With her husband Antoine conscripted into the French army, Vianne is left to care for their daughter Sophie alone. However, her quiet life is disrupted when Nazi Germany invades France, and she is forced to accommodate a German officer named Captain Beck in her home. Struggling to survive amidst food shortages, bombings, and the constant threat of violence, Vianne must summon immense courage to protect her family and resist the occupying forces. In contrast, Isabelle Rossignol, Vianne's younger sister, is fiery, rebellious, and determined to make a difference in the war effort. Rejecting the constraints placed upon her gender, Isabelle joins the French Resistance and becomes a key figure in helping Allied airmen escape from France. Operating under the alias "Nightingale," she undertakes dangerous missions behind enemy lines, risking her life to fight against the Nazi regime As the war progresses, both sisters confront unimaginable challenges and personal tragedies, testing their resilience and the strength of their bond. Through alternating perspectives, the novel offers a nuanced portrayal of life in wartime France, exploring themes of love, sacrifice, courage, and the indomitable human spirit in the face of adversity. This book is brilliantly written and is an extremely engaging read. This tale transports readers to a tumultuous period in history, reminding us of the power of love, hope, and perseverance in the darkest of times. #NightingaleNovel #WWIIFiction #SistersInWar #ResistanceHeroes #LoveInConflict #KristinHannah #HistoricalFiction #CourageUnderFire #FamilySaga #WomenOfWWII #isabellerossignol #nightingale #ww2heroes #loveinthetimeofwar #readwandergrow #bookgram #bookgramindia #indianbookreader

What’s your next read? For me it’s The British Booksellers by @kristycambron Its received amazing reviews by my friends, and I can’t wait to dive in! Here’s the synopsis: Inspired by real accounts of the Forgotten Blitz bombings, The British Booksellers highlights the courage of those whose lives were forever changed by war—and the stories that bind us in the fight for what matters most. A tenant farmer’s son had no business daring to dream of a future with an earl’s daughter, but that couldn’t keep Amos Darby from his secret friendship with Charlotte Terrington
until the reality of the Great War sobered youthful dreams. Now decades later, he bears the brutal scars of battles fought in the trenches and their futures that were stolen away. His return home doesn’t come with tender reunions, but with the hollow fulfillment of opening a bookshop on his own and retreating as a recluse within its walls. When the future Earl of Harcourt chose Charlotte to be his wife, she knew she was destined for a loveless match. Though her heart had chosen another long ago, she pledges her future even as her husband goes to war. Twenty-five years later, Charlotte remains a war widow who divides her days between her late husband’s declining estate and operating a quaint Coventry bookshop—Eden Books, lovingly named after her grown daughter. And Amos is nothing more than the rival bookseller across the lane. As war with Hitler looms, Eden is determined to preserve her father’s legacy. So when an American solicitor arrives threatening a lawsuit that could destroy everything they’ve worked so hard to preserve, mother and daughter prepare to fight back. But with devastation wrought by the Luftwaffe’s local blitz terrorizing the skies, battling bookshops—and lost loves, Amos and Charlotte—must put aside their differences and fight together to help Coventry survive. #thebritishbooksellers #kristycambron #historicalfiction #inspirationalfiction #wwiifiction #newbooks #bookrecs #books #bookstagram #booktour #austenprosepr #vintagedress #vintage

Here's a nice surprise! Code Name Edelweiss ebook is just $1.99 at the huge online retailer we shall not name (but you know the place I mean) Here's the story: . “What I am looking for—what I desperately need, Mrs. Weiss—is a spy.” In the summer of 1933, a man named Adolf Hitler is the new and powerful anti-Semitic chancellor of Germany. But in Los Angeles, no-nonsense secretary Liesl Weiss has concerns much closer to home. The Great Depression is tightening its grip and Liesl is the sole supporter of two children, an opinionated mother, and a troubled brother. Leon Lewis is a Jewish lawyer who has watched Adolf Hitler’s rise to power—and the increase in anti-Semitism in America—with growing alarm. He believes Nazi agents are working to seize control of Hollywood, the greatest propaganda machine the world has ever known. The trouble is, authorities scoff at his dire warnings. When Liesl loses her job at MGM, her only choice is to work with Leon Lewis and the mysterious Agent Thirteen to spy on her friends and neighbors in her German American community. What Leon Lewis and his spies find is more chilling—and more dangerous—than any of them suspected. Code Name Edelweiss is based on a true story, unknown until recent years: How a lone Jewish lawyer and a handful of amateur spies discovered and foiled Adolf Hitler’s plan to take over Hollywood. . #WWIIfiction #WWII #fiction #historicalfiction #ebooksale #codenameedelweiss
