Currently reading ‘A Tale of Wild Geese’ by Rosalie Fox @rosalie_fox_writes. Absolutely loving it! Has been hard to put down! The book starts from the perspective of actual wild geese: beautifully descriptive prose. then draws you into the lives of Eleanor, Johnny, Danny and company. A love story has begun. It is 1940. There are fighter pilots. There are scrambles. There is the RAF and the WRAF. There is family drama. The plot is moving quickly which seems to reflect the urgency to live now as no one knows what will happen or how long they may have in realty. After all, it is wartime. Now, this is just for starters. I’ll do a more thorough review when I’ve finished it but just thought to share my enthusiasm for what so far has been a truly immersive read! Wow, Kelly Rimmer did a great job with this book. Perhaps because it’s based on history or because she understands how to bring characters to life, she had me hooked from the beginning in this multi layered war story. I simple couldnt but Alice and Alina’s story down. Rather ironical that I’m reading it while in Europe but I’m grateful that this part of the world is at peace. // When it all started. 12 years ago, this month, I woke up in the worse pain imaginable. I stubbornly drove to work before my co-workers talked me into going to Kaiser. That would be my last day at work for nearly a year as I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer. I was hospitalized for a month before fighting through radiation and chemotherapy. On my way to recovery and healing I went through hell and back. Hospitalized three days after being diagnosed, almost dying while in ICU, losing over 50 pounds, losing nearly 3 inches in height, losing my ability to walk, participating in physical and occupational therapy, daily doctor visits, exams, procedures, labs, being rushed to the hospital in an ambulance after passing out at home, and having 8.2 million cells collected and saved at City of Hope for a bone marrow transplant, if I ever choose to have one or two. Get this!!! All of this in the first year. Life after cancer has been a changed life while maintaining remission! Yet, I’m thriving while I live my best life! Now 12 years later, I’m finally off of my “chemo pills” (6th months now) and I have my first set of related bloodwork in three months due next week followed by an appointment with my oncologist, on May 16th. Warlight- Michael Ondaatje Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 We follow Nathaniel as he shares with us his childhood memories, although with an unclear timeline. Although Nathaniel says he is writing from memory, the events did actually happen. Nathaniel's parents leave him and his sister in the care of 'The Moth' in 1945 when they are in London during the World War II, as they disappear one day. I was hooked right away and was curious to know more about Nathaniel's journey. The fact that it's based on Nathaniel's memory makes it more genuine but did cause some confusion. This is one those books where the story will be revealed if too much is said. Would suggest reading it. I read this one for #thestorygraphreadstheworld2024 for Germany. 💥This was definitely a powerful read which left me with haunting images in my mind. It's not easy to read about the experiences of a soldier in the trenches of World War I. There are some horrifying and heart-wrenching scenes so you have to be prepared for that going into it. The romance is slow burning, until the end when the spice starts spicing. Most of the twists I saw coming due to abundant foreshadowing and some obvious red herrings, but it was still a very fun & bingeable read. Beware, there be cliffs, both literal ones and those of the hanging variety. If you loved the Crimson Moth, this has a similar tenor, although these MCs are less insecure 🙌 (still a little insecure but more consumed by guilt). 💛 r e v i e w 💛 . 📖 🎧 Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian . A children’s classic about Willy, an 8 year old boy evacuated to the country during WW2, and Mr Tom, his grumpy host. . I started this one on audio but couldn’t get the narration speed right, which annoyed me immensely so switched to the paperback! . Oh poor Willy, and poor Tom 😢😢 they started out as tragic figures in need of love and care, lonely and emotionally battered for reasons that became clear as the book went on. They were both traumatised by past events and needed each other more than they knew. . Tom was just like a gruff but gentle grandad with an absolute heart of gold. Willy was a timid soul who had to learn even the most basic of life’s tasks. It was just the most heartwarming and tender story. . The characters were great - I loved the neighbours and kids pulling together in their little merry band, they built up trust and camaraderie and helped each other through, in their own little ways. Willie was respected and had friends for the first time in his life. . Heads up - this isn’t a lighthearted book, it’s got some really heavy topics including child abuse. I wasn’t prepared for what happened when Will went home to see his poorly mother. Wow. That got me. I wasn’t expecting to see that in a kids book! . Luckily the ending left me with a smile on my face, there were plenty of uplifting moments to off-set the sadness.
