"The example of a syllogism that he had studied in Kiesewetter's logic: Caius is a man, men are mortal, therefore Caius is mortal, had throughout his whole life seemed to him right only in relation to Caius, but not to him at all." The thing I love about Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky is that they swear by: SHOW, DON'T TELL. I'd always assumed it to be a mystery revolving a death just like Agatha's The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Sometimes you just grow up listening to names of some classics and the titles make you dwell on some vague assumptions before you've got the chance to read the book. Finally, when I read this last year, I realised that it really hits you in the guts. It's about Ivan's fear of death. That gnawing sense of being abandoned to his fate by family and friends who go on living while he waits for his death. The curse of being human is the curse of wanting more at the cost of not appreciating what we have, and not seeing the value of what is already with us. We're taught that wanting more is a virtue, but eventually we all meet the same end regardless of what we amass and our accomplishments. The duality between living with suffering and finishing your existence is really deep. Tolstoy really nails the dilemma of Ivan to show that he wants the two things at the same time. I was blown away at the timeless way Tolstoy describes pain, joy, boredom, frustration, and acceptance. I have nearly nothing in common with a 19th century Russian judge and yet the way he feels about his house, his job, his lackluster marriage, attending boring parties, etc. spoke to me deeply. This is one book that I'm definitely going to revisit in 20-30 years to immerse in the feeling of how beautifully Tolstoy has encapsulated the human experience of time through aging. It's very short and fairly simply written for a novella of that time period. However, it does deal with death and dying, so it can be emotionally draining and might be hard to get through if it hits too close to stuff going on in your life. I couldn't stop thinking throughout that this is in translation. Imagine how it must be, to read it in Russian. [bookstagram , book review , classics , Leo Tolstoy]

A well executed short novel can be an incredibly satisfying reading experience. Something that is fairly quick to get through but leaves a lasting impression. There’s real skill in brevity. Some of my absolute favourites from last year were short novels. So Long, See You Tomorrow by William Maxwell, Sula by Toni Morrison, Katalin Street by Magda Szabo. These are some titles I’m hoping to get to soon, one of which I’m already close to finishing. My first McCullers, The Member of the Wedding is just as good as everyone who recommended it to me said it would be. More thoughts to follow. The rest all sound very promising, the Zweig, Nabokov, Fosse. I will report back when I get to them. #shortnovels #literaryfiction #bookphotography

A collection of short stories by 张惠雯. I could not recall how I stumbled upon it on WeChat Read. Initially, the author’s name led me to assume she might be from Taiwan, but by the end of the book, I felt certain she is a mainlander, possibly around my age. Names can often reflect the characteristics of an era or a geographical region. Mine has occasionally brought me moments of embarrassment when I was very young, prompting questions about my origins and family structure - “so do you have younger brother?” Curiosity about whether 张惠雯 is the author’s real name stems from my own such experiences with name. The stories themselves, which I thoroughly enjoyed, also hint that she is about my age, given the contents of the novel, particularly the last novel basing on her own story. What I especially appreciate about this book is how Zhang fluidly switches between male and female perspectives across different stories. For instance, the protagonist of the title story “飞鸟和池鱼” is a middle-aged man grappling with typical life challenges, while other stories are told from female viewpoints. From the preface, it is revealed that Zhang is a Chinese writer residing on the East Coast of the United States. I highly recommend this collection for its insightful portrayals and the skillful way it navigates diverse identities and experiences. #book #booklover #shortnovels #张惠雯 #bookstagram

Sharing some appreciation for books 300 pages or less 💜 I love diving into epic sagas, but I sometimes I have to break up the more intense reads with something quick and fun to kind of reset. Personally, this also helps prevent burnout and reading slumps while keeping me on track with my reading goals. Shorter novels are also a great way to get introduced to a new genre or author without committing to a long series! The books pictured all helped me get over a slump or introduced me to a new genre that I enjoy. Are there any shorter novels that you enjoyed? 📚Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree 📚An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson 📚Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater 📚Godkiller by Hannah Kaner 📚Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia 📚All Systems Red by Martha Wells 📚The Scourge Between Stars by Ness Brown 📚Nettle & Bone by T Kingfisher #bookstagram #readersofinstagram #bookrecommendations #bookrecs #shortnovels #novellas #fantasy #cozyfantasy #scifi

🙋‍♀️¡Hola lectores! /Hello bookstafriends!

“That little kid in the front, the one in shorts giving a military salute: that’s me… Blissfully unaware that a military junta would later change my life.” How does a family with little to do beyond the lighthouse, get ripped apart by a war that was not even theirs? 🍂The lighthouse family is a short (180 pages) historical fiction novel situated in Turkiye (turkey) narrating the story of a poor but happy family of ‘K’ ‘K’ had to make a hard decision of whether to continue his studies in the city or become a lighthouse keeper like this father. In which his mother, sister and brother helped him But how the war happening in some other place changed the life of little ‘K’ and his entire family, is better left to the pages for you to read. 🍂It’s such a simple book with no drama, no major descriptions of the war but how a small lighthouse family who suffers the loss. Recommending it to just historical fiction lovers will be WRONG. This one is literally for anyone who loves reading. 🍂it’s short 🍂it’s sad 🍂It has family and siblings bonding ❤️it’s beautiful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I had the privilege of getting my book signed by the author @fsunel at the book fair but thankyou @penguinindia for sending me the book!🩷 #thelighthousefamily #historicalfiction #warstory #warstories #historicalfictionbooks #familynovel #shortnovel #shortnovels

Book Review: The Gentleman from Peru by André Aciman Set on the Amalfi Coast, Italy 169 pages Published by Faber in 2024 A Gentleman in Peru is a pleasant, simply written, light piece of fluff. Set on the Amalfi Coast, a group of young Americans who had known each other from college, are marooned in a beautiful resort by the glittering sea while waiting for their boat to be fixed. An older gentleman has been watching them each night at dinner, and when they finally meet him, he has some interesting and incredulous stories to tell. Overexplained and easy to predict, it was still a pleasant read on a sunny day. 3 ⭐️ #thegentlemanfromperu #shortnovels #bookreview #bookstagram

📚 My stack of Argentine female authors. Amazing work! Just read Cousins by Aurora Venturini. Jump into Yuna's world at she tells her readers about living with her disabled sister, her mother, aunts and cousins and the unfortunate events that happen to her female cousins and sister (rape, abortion, death). You will fall in love with Yuna's innocent look at her world and its inspiration to paint in which she sells to support her family. It is a fairly quick read, funny, and sad. You will also see Yuna's growth in her writing (you'll need to read it to understand what i mean). You can't help but fall in love with Yuna. REVIEW ** The novel begins as a quiet chronicle of an Irish coal merchant's day, introducing the people important to his life and others whose lives he touches peripherally. He is shown to be a kind and thoughtful man to everyone and a loving father and husband. Then bit by bit he is faced by incidents which tease his sense of justice and moral behaviour. How he thinks about these happenings, the words of others, and the choices he makes form the crux of the novel. I haven't read a novel this slim for many years, a novella really. And yet, as the critics all exclaim, despite, or perhaps because of its quiet, gentle reflective plot it really packs a punch. Refreshing, optimistic, and beautifully engaging, there is nothing not to like in the jewel of a novel. I must read more of the author's work. #smallthingslikethese #clairekeegan #recentfiction #irishfiction #readingnow #currentlyreading #whattoreadnext #shortnovels #bookreview #booksbooksbooks #booklover #reading #readersofinstagram

Hello, hope you have all had a lovely Easter! Today it's my stop on the T. Kingfisher bookstagrammers tour, to celebrate the release of What Feasts at Night and her tour in Australia this April. Exciting! What Feasts at Night is the sequel to What Moves the Dead, but it can be totally read as a stand alone. Don't these two covers look lovely together? I had the pleasure of reading them in the space of a week, only a few weeks after reading the lovely Thornhedge. They are both fairly short too, so they are easy to devour in a sitting or two. Added bonus... I got to pull out my skeletal props! The gargoyle is pretty cool, isn’t it?☠️ Both of these books had that lovely combination of cozy and creepy that Kingfisher pulls off so well - she has such a unique style! What Moves the Dead is a retelling of Edgar Allen Poe's Fall of the House of Usher, and it is seriously spooky and very atmospheric! Expect hares that continue to move after death, a range of fungal growths, a lake that pulses with lights, a dilapidated mansion, and an ailing brother and sister suffering from unexplained maladies. What Feasts at Night again stars sworn soldier Easton and their batman, Angus, as well as perhaps my favourite character from this series, the fiercely intelligent and very British mushroom expert, Miss Potter. She is wonderful! While the tone and feel is very similar to What Moves the Dead, this is a very different story set in an old hunting lodge where a creature from folklore, the moroi, appears to have taken up residence. This was actually my favourite of the two books - I loved the creeping feeling of dread, the way Kingfisher has written about Easton's experience of war as a place, and the lovely connection between Angus and Miss Potter, not to mention the supernatural elements. The Sworn Soldier novellas have a wonderful Gothic feel and the lovely understated, quiet style I associate with this author. I really enjoy her wry sense of humour and turn of phrase as well as the way a sense of menace can somehow exist in books that also feel cosy. It must be such a tough thing to pull off! Thanks so much to @newsouthbooksau for these two unique books... 😊

Can you recommend a novel under 200 pages? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ‘How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water’ by Angie Cruz is literary fiction about a Dominican immigrant in New York after the 2008 financial crash.   Write this down: Cara Romero may have regrets, but she has a whole lot of heart. I am absolutely blown away by the author’s skill in writing this story. In less than 200 pages, this book takes you on an emotional journey with fully rounded characters that will stay in my heart for years to come. Firstly, the voice of the main character is so strong. If you’re an aspiring author, purchase this book as a masterclass in voice. Secondly, the structure is extremely clever. And, lastly, the writing is so sharp. The simplicity of the words creates so much beauty and I love the metaphor of undrowning yourself (desahogarme). Yes, Cara is very flawed and could easily be the villain if this story was told from another perspective. But it’s her humanness that I connected with. Every second-generation child with immigrant parents will be able to relate to this novel. Swipe ➡️ and click the link in bio for the full review on my blog (aminasbookshelf.com) I’d recommend this book to fans of: 💕 ‘How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents’ by Julia Alvarez 💕 ‘Convenience Store Woman’ by Sayuka Murata 💕 ‘Of Women and Salt’ by Gabriela Garcia 💕 ‘Girl Meets Boy’ by Ali Smith. These all very immersive, layered books that have strong narrative styles, which allow the main character to speak directly to the reader. #Bookstagram #BooksToRead #BookRecommendation #HowNotToDrown #AngieCruz #Dominicana #DominicanAuthors #DominicanNovels #LiteraryFiction #ShortBooks #ShortNovels #Novellas

📖The Gift by Freida McFadden Oh my god what did I just read. Actually I already knew this book would be something crazy but this?? I've not expected it. It was my first book of Freida McFadden but I knew her writing and all the things she writes. If you're someone like me who wants to start Freida's books, this would be a perfect start. A very short story (still with an unexpected traumatized ending🤡) I'm not going to give any spoilers as the book is already very short so you should start it and it will turned out to be your one of the favorite short novels. Specifically for those who've never read a book by Freida McFadden, this is your chance. Do it, Just do it! Again a short book within the same day🤧 sorry guys I'm not able to make myself finish Iron Flame because there's a wait of 1 year for the next book.. I'm happy with it being long so I can enjoy it! Days at the Morisaki Bookshop was honestly the book I didn’t know I needed. It’s straightforward and short, but there was o much wisdom behind its simplicity. Sometimes we have to step back and just say things as they are. I’m very much looking forward to the sequel coming this summer! If you love Stuido Ghibli movies like From Up On Poppy Hill or The Wind Rises, Days at the Morisaki Bookshop is definitely for you.💫🍃 —— #oliveinfluencer #harperperennial #translatedbooks #stuidoghibli #cozybooks #cozyacademia #bookreview #book #cozyreading #shortnovels #japanesenovels #harpercollins #paperbackbooks #paperbacks #simplebooks #bookcover #cozyreading #tbrlist

✿ Jae's Book Diary Review #4 ✿ "𝘽𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙨 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙨. 𝘼 𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙖 𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙡. 𝙄𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧'𝙨 𝙖𝙞𝙙 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙨" I think this is my most favorite quote from this book. I can't prove it's real but I can say I believe in it. It's a long story but it happened to me once, when I was in a difficult situation, I decided to just open some of my books randomly and then, the words "Carry on, Carry the f-ck on" struck me like gush of water right in my face. And it woke me out of that situation and I couldn't be more thankful. Back to the book review, I wasn't particulary immersed in the story. I'm not exactly sure why, but I feel like there's no element of mystery, it was pretty obvious from the start. I wish they could've atleast made it a little more challenging. It could've been more adventurous and mysterious. The chemistry between the cat and main lead is good but only at the first few pages, I just wish there's more of their banter. And aslo, I'm not that convinced as to how easily the people changed their minds and views on certain topics about books specially if they've built their beliefs on solid ground and has strong foundations. But also at the same time it makes me think how powerful words can be, for people to actually go the other way from what they've always believed in. I didn't like how the story goes but there are pretty important points about the power of books and I find some of the words being said as blunt and I love it that way, it's honest. But on the flip-side, there was, I think, another message this book is trying to give us. A journey to self-discovery, it wasn't just about saving books, it was also about exposing one's self in a situation, experience it first hand and ultimately be forced to make a decision. Sometimes we're good at saying things, however when it comes to making an action, most of us fail. That's why you can only truly know what you want to do, who you are, what you love and what you will ultimately decide upon when you put yourself in new situations. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 #bookreview #books

📚Review: I had first picked up “Second Place” by Rachel Cusk in a bookstore in Dublin on a warm summer day. I was drawn to the beautiful minimalist cover and as I opened the book, I was struck by the first sentence: “I once told you, Jeffers, about the time I met the devil on a train leaving Paris, and about how after that meeting the evil that usually lies undisturbed beneath the surface of things rose up and disgorged itself over every part of life.” Our protagonist M tells her friend Jeffers - whom we never meet or find out who he is - how she came to invite a famed artist named L to her peaceful and remote home. On an early morning walk through Paris she had encountered his exhibition in a local gallery that had struck a chord. She felt her own state of mind reflected in the paintings and found herself in them. Eagerly, she writes to him and invites him to stay in a cabin on her property called the “Second Place”. Yet, from the first moment L arrives, things do not go as planned. Soon, M’s quiet domestic life with her husband Tony and her daughter Justine is turned upside down by the presence of L. Second Place is one of those novels that theses can be written about. It is full of symbols, metaphors, foreshadowing... most of it probably went over my head on the first read through, yet Cusk’s writing is so beautiful and full of excellent quotes that I had to have a pencil and tabs at the ready. The downside: M’s inner monologues were quite self-involved and philosophical at times which unfortunately made some passages drag on for me. Overall, however, I am thoroughly impressed by my first Cusk novel and am very excited to read more of her work. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #rachelcusk #secondplace #bookstagram #bookstagramgermany #tbr #marchmadnesschallenge #shortnovels #bookreview

The Heart of a Dog by Mikhail Bulgakov First, I have to thank @alifeonbooks and his video on short Russian novels for introducing me to this book. The Heart of the Dog is an explosively entertaining political and social satire that, at points, turns into a Frankenstein-esque farce. With the hilarious and yet horrific premise, this short novel is a treat. Right from the opening line (which might be one of my favourites), Bulgakov perfectly sets the tone. I know the very broad strokes of Russian history, so I might have missed some layers of satirical nuance, but I was never left in the dark. I stretched this one out over a few days, but if you have time, you could knock this out in one sitting. #bulgakov #russianlit #paperbacks #shortnovels #satire #frankenstein #russia #talkingdogs #istandwithukraine

Started this book for March. Hopefully, it will take me out of my reading slump. Usually I can rely on the short novels of Banana Yoshimoto to take me out of a bad reading slump because of her world and character building. I have been a fan of her writing for a couple of years now and I am slowly making my way through her whole work( the translated ones at least, as my japanese is not yet at a level high enough to read novels). Do you also enjoy Banana Yoshimoto books? What is your favourite? Or, if you’ve not read it yet, are you interested in starting any of her books? #readingslump #marchreading #currentlyreading #bananayoshimotobooks #bananayoshimototime #thepremonition #japaneseliterature #shortstories #shortnovels #instanovels #bookstagrammer #favouriteauthor #femalewriters

"There are so many things to do, but I won’t make the excuse that I have no time anymore. Instead, I will think about what I can do with the time I have. Easy read for anyone. This is such a wonderful book! It's just like a warm hug for if you are stuck with your life! I enjoyed the book and it changed my perspective of thinking! Worth reading! Due to unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances (moving in with a boy because I love him and also had reached my limit with the amount of bathroom-woodlice-in-rented-flat I could endure), I went from having a convenient, glorious, gorgeous, stunning, dazzling 20-minute commute home to one that takes over an hour. You don’t know how lucky you are to have a commute that’s so quick that you can sneeze outside your office and suddenly you’re home until it’s gone. My new commute is at least easy, I just sit on the Met line for an hour with a five-minute walk either side, but the vibes are not the same. My old train line wasn’t dangerous by any means, but it offered a rough-around-the-edges chaos that made train journeys full of potential. The last time I got on one, a man screamed down the carriage that he’d had ‘five Jack Daniels and he was ready to throat-punch a c***’. It was nine in the morning. Tubes into west London don’t supply you with that type of entertainment, and I felt very much the fish out of water, until a few weeks ago I watched a man get politely wrestled off the tube by police for being a public menace. Finally, I thought. My type of people. In a bid to make the tube feel a bit more glamorous, I swapped out my work rucksack for a shoulder bag. As a woman who looks, dresses and acts like a librarian scared of human contact, I decided I wanted to feel a bit more like a high-flying corporate girlie. Both my laptop and lunchbox are heavy, so I imagine I look like a high-flying corporate girlie with osteoporosis. All this to say, 150 pages to 250 pages really is the sweet spot of tube commute books now in a desperate bid to stop my spine snapping in half, and I’m rapidly running through my collection. Please ply me with suggestions and also any tips you have to fix both wonky AND rounded shoulders. #novellas #quickreads #shortnovels #bananayoshimoto #joandidion #nonfiction #nellalarsen #passing #fiction #ukbookstagram #bookrecommendations #theyearofmagicalthinking #penguinbooks #penguinclassics #faber

EXIT WEST - MOHSIN HAMID 🌟🌟🌟💫 Exit West is about love during war, exile and belonging, cultural conflict and creation. It is about a young couple whose country becomes more and more dangerous; about their differing relationships with their religion and families; about being a refugee and about the depth and shallowness of the importance of where you're from. Hamid poses questions in quiet, interesting ways, using touches of magical realism. The book and its characters were interesting to me but never built to anything more substantial. #bookreview #fiction #shortnovels #pakistanifiction #reading #bookstagram #shortreads #books #booksaboutrefugees

"You don't ever do something just because it makes you feel good?" ✨✨✨ #dasversprechen #friedrichdürrenmatt #lapromesse #bookstagram #instalivre #sundayreading #lirelirelire #bookworm #booknerd #livrestagram #babelio #livreaddict #livreaddiction #litterature #litteraturesuisse #goodreads #justfinishedreading #litteraturehelvetique #bibliovore #adaptationcinematographique #thepledge #seanpenn #jacknicholson #beniciodeltorro #instalive #books #booklovers #romanpolicier #shortnovels
