결코 사소하지 않은 모든 것들 <이처럼 사소한 것들>_클레이 키건, 다산책방 1985년, 아일랜드의 소도시에서 석탄을 수입하여 판매하는 빌 펄롱은 나름의 안온한 삶을 영위하고 있다. 비록 쉬는 날도 없이 힘들게 일하며 가족을 부양하는 처지이지만 그것조차 하지 못하는 불운한 사람들이 도처에 있음을 알고 있기 때문이다. 그는 소도시의 공동체 내에서 은밀하게 치러지고 묵인되던 차별과 학대에 노출된 아이들을 발견하고 고민에 빠진다. 아내는 "우리 애들이 아니"p.57니 엮이지 말라고, 이웃인 미시즈 케호는 딸들의 장래를 생각해서라도 수녀원과 척을 지지 말라 충고한다. 그러나 그때, 그는 자신이 매우 운이 좋았으며 주위의 어른들의 사소한 친절과 애정이 그를 여태까지 이끌어왔음을 깨닫는다. 할 수 있었으나 하지 못한 일이 평생의 죄책감으로 자신의 발을 옥죄지 못하도록, 그는 앞으로의 고생을 뻔히 예상함에도 걸음을 내딛는다. 비록 작품 속에서 사소하다고 표현했으나 미시즈 윌슨과 네드가 빌에게 보여준 그 모든 것들은 결코 사소한 것들이 아니다. 미시즈 윌슨은 개신교도 영국인으로, 카톨릭을 믿는 아일랜드인 세라과 네드의 아이를 잘 돌봐주고 교육시키는 것은 당시의 영국-아일랜드의 갈등상황 하에서 쉽지 않은 결정이었을 것이다. 아이의 이름을 영국식 이름인 빌이라 짓고 스스로를 영국계의 핏줄이라 믿게 하고자 자신의 존재를 감춘 네드 또한 어찌 그 선택이 쉬웠으리라 말할 수 있겠는가. 언뜻 사소해 보이는 선택들은 결코 사소하지 않았다. 지금 빌의 선택 역시 그러하다. 내부고발자에 대한 처우를 생각해보건데 그의 앞날이 생고생길이 되리라는 것은 자명하다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 인간은 그런 선택을 하고, 그럼에도 불구하고, 인간은 살아간다. 이렇게 키건은 매우 시적인 문장들을 엮어 그렇다면 나는 어떻게 살 것인가, 우리들로 하여금 자문하게 만든다. I recently finished reading small things like these and I wanted to talk about it. It’s amazing how such a powerful story can take place in ~114 pages. I loved the messages about courage, community, work/routine, family & chosen family, and how kindness really is everything. I was holding back tears toward the end of this story. I know this one will stay with me for a long time. I’m also around 100 pages in to the poppy war and I really like it so far. #clairekeegan #smallthingslikethese #이처럼사소한것들 “People could be good, it was a matter of learning how to manage and balance the give-and-take in a way that let you get on with others as well as your own.” Short but powerful book. 읽은 책들 중에서 가장 짧았던 책이 아닐까 싶은.. 그만큼 읽기 어려웠고 다시 줄거리 보려고 처음부터 다시 펼쳤다 말았다를 몇번이고 했지만 그만큼 깊은 울림이 있었던 책이다. 책이 나온지 삼년정도 됬는데 이제서 교보 베스트셀러에서 계속 내려오지 않고 있기도 하다. 작가 클레어 키건은 아이리쉬 작간데 짧고 강렬하고 사실 친절하지 않은 구어체로 쓰기로 유명해서 의미를 유추하고 알아내는데 시간이 조금 걸린다. 이 소설의 핵심은 중반부 이상부터 시작되는데 평온한 삶을 사는 상인 빌 펄롱이 막달레나 수녀원에 석탄을 배달하러 갔다가 충격적인 발견을 하면서 시작된다. 더럽고 떨고 있는 어린 소녀가 창고에 갇힌 것을 보게 되는데 이 발견은 ‘마더 앤 베이비 홈‘으로 불리는 천주교회가 운영하는 마들렌 세탁소의 가혹한 현실을 드러낸다. 이곳에서는 ’타락한‘ 여성들이 가혹한 환경에서 일하게 되는 곳이었다. 이책을 읽으며 막달레나 세탁소 사건을 찾아봤는데 (영화도 있음) 1993년 까지 여성 노동착취, 아이 뺏고 입양보내기 등 너무 잔인한 사건들이 많아서 마음이 너무 아팠다ㅠㅠ 펄롱은 본인의 과거를 회상하며 본인도 미혼모 밑에서 자랐지만 본인들을 잘 돌봐준 윌슨아줌마 덕에 무사히 자랄 수 있음을 기억하면서 자신이 발견한 부당함에 대해 목소리를 낼지, 아니면 주변 사람들처럼 고통을 외면하며 자신의 가족과 사업의 안정을 지킬지에 대한 도덕적 딜레마에 직면한다. 이 소설은 공모, 용기, 그리고 인간성을 정의하는 작지만 중요한 친절한 행위라는 주제를 탐구하는 책이다. 도덕적 복잡성과 체계적인 잔혹감. 이 두 주제를 깊이 생각할 수 있었는데 개인으로서의 나는 어떻게 해야하나..맞서는것이 나는 가능했을까. #주주네책추천 #영어원서책 #엄마의독서기록

MEJORES LECTURAS PRIMER CUATRIMESTRE 2024. This is a small but mighty read. I thought about this book for a long time after I read it. I’d say in Ireland you wouldn’t have to go far to name a relative or a friend of a friend who had a connection to a Magdalene laundry or a mother and baby home here. Set in the 1980s Ireland, Claire Keegan tells the tale of a local man (Bill Furlong) who seems to have a very idyllic life from the outset with a coal business that does well, a family of all girls and a wife whom he loves. Bill often tries to do right by the village folk he employs and sells to. As the book unravels we learn more about Bills upbringing and when he visits the local convent to deliver coal, makes a discovery in one of the bunkers that leads him to question his core beliefs and changes the path of his life at home forever. This is an important book, of the many I have read about the mother and baby homes and laundries, this highlights the subtle way the church hid women and denied them and others the truth about their babies and children. The cold hard truth of what happens in the book mirrors the horrors of real life that the church were complicit in. 🛒📖 Book Review 📖🛒 The strength here, for me, is the dialogue. The author has captured cadence and colloquialisms nicely. This short read shines a light on the power of doing the right thing, when others willingly live alongside wrong-doing, not confronting the truth for fear of the personal repercussions. However, I feel this novella skims the periphery of a serious topic and, as a result, looses some of its power, even coming across a bit twee at times. Set at christmas, this would be a good book for a stormy winter night during the season, that said it worked just fine on this May day. Sooo I saw Claire Keegan speak at the end of last month! 😍 I booked the ticket at the start of the year before having even read any of her books yet (I know this may sound ridiculous) but I was certain I would enjoy her writing based on reviews I’d read from people I trust. Classic mood reader that I am, I had not picked up her books until 1 day before the event 😂 but nothing put me in more of a Claire Keegan mood than the fact that I was about the see her speak. So the day prior and morning of I read Small Things Like These and Foster. No one was joking when they said her books are small but mighty. They were such a joy to read and truely are perfect examples of how impactful short novels can be. #smallthingslikethese #clairekeegan #이처럼사소한것들 #클레어키건 #다산책방 우리가 점점 잃어가는 것들에 대한 소설. 부끄러움을 아는 것 감사할 줄 아는 것 약한 것들끼리 연대하는 것 사랑.....사람..사랑. 비정한 세상에 내던져지듯 태어난 우리는 누구나 타인의 도움을 받으며 살아간다. 당연한 것 같지만 하나도 당연한 것이 없다. 내가 받은 도움을 누군가에게 되돌려 주는 삶은 가장 숭고하고 아름다운 삶이다. 내가 가진 것에 감사해 하는 사람만이 다른 이에게 베풀 수 있다. 나의 안위 때문에 다른이의 아픔을 외면하면 고통스런 자기혐오에 빠질 수 있다. 영화 <박하사탕>의 영호를 떠올렸다. 죄책감으로 평생을 자학하다가 결국 스스로 목숨을 끊었던. 영호와는 다른 선택을 한 펄롱은 결국 자기 자신을 지킨 셈이다. 자기 안의 목소리를 외면하지 않음으로서. 모른척 하지 않음으로서. 우리 마음 안에선 언제나 너무나 인간적인 고민과 그 상위의 가치들이 얽혀서 싸우고 있는 듯 하다. 어떻게 살아야 할 것인가____ 고뇌하지 않으면 삶은 공허해지고 살아지는대로 살아가게 되는 것. 도서돤 상호대차로 받아 읽었는데, 예약조차 어려워 무려 두 달을 기다렸다.. 읽어보니 왜인지 알겠다. 소장하고 읽고 또 읽고싶은 구절들이 많았다. 짧지만 여운과 감동이 긴 소설.

Just exquisite writing. Some of the best I’ve read in a long time. A masterclass in saying more with less. I’ve no idea how Garner manages to convey so much about a person from a short description of an everyday incident or a snippet of conversation, but somehow she does. A chance meeting with an old friend has dramatic repercussions for Dexter Fox and his family. Cracks begin to appear in their seemingly stable suburban family life and relationships shift. I can’t believe I haven’t read any of Helen Garner’s novels before. She’s been described as the Joan Didion of Australia, compared to Virginia Woolf and this novel is seen as her masterpiece and one of the greatest family novels ever. Obviously I’m making the comparison the wrong way but the book it most reminded me of was another favourite, Claire Keegan’s, Small Things Like These. They each have a similar ability to evoke emotions and reveal characters with tiny, everyday details. Anyone who loves Keegan’s writing should certainly read this. As should fans of family novels and indeed everyone who loves brilliant writing! Garner manages to evoke complete characters and complex relationships from short, fragmented episodes. Perspectives shift continually but smoothly. It’s completely mesmerising. @wnbooks have released new editions of three of Garner’s books. In a nice link with my last read, this has an glowing introduction by the wonderful David Nicholls. I’m off to read all of Garner’s books. There must be other brilliant Australian authors, I missed. ✨Author Spotlight - Claire Keegan✨ Please don’t make me pick my favourite! You can, however, make me pick my least favourite. Foster and Small Things are both impeccable. The fact that she can tell such a powerful story and establish so much in only 100 pages is incredible. Claire Keegan is masterful. Both books take a close up look at the ethics and community impact of personal decisions. I just can’t get over how much these stories have stuck with me. I’ve read them each twice and have liked them better with each reading. So Late in the Day is a collection of 3 even shorter little vignettes. They’re well written and equally as emotionally evocative as the other two but I ended just feeling a bit unsettled at the end. Overall I found the content to be somewhat less refined than the other two. Regardless, they’re all wonderful and deserve so much attention.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE follows Bill Furlong, a coal merchant, as he prepares for the busy holiday season in Ireland. While making a delivery to a convent, Bill is witness to a practice that goes unspoken amongst those in town forcing him to question his morality and confront his past. Claire Keegan’s story gripped me from the opening pages and didn’t let go through its brisk one hundred and twenty pages. I had read a review that stated this was a quiet book, and I’m not sure I could find a more apt description. It is character driven and gives the reader a view on a practice that should never have happened at all, let alone in 1985 when the novel takes place. Despite the sorrowful nature of the story, having it set around Christmas helped provide a measure of hope that the disaffected are not beyond reach when it comes to making a stand for what is right. This story affected me deeply and I cannot recommend it enough.
