✨ The Bean Trees Barbara Kingsolver I said this when I read ‘Instructions for a Heatwave’ by BK; it reads like an Anne Tyler novel. And I have to stop doing that because I’m doing Kingsolver an injustice. I wasn’t expecting anything from this. The cover didn’t grab me and the blurb on the back seemed wishy-washy. Well, I was wrong. This is a beautifully, subtle novel that creeps up on you. one minute you’re wondering where it’s going and the next you’re gripped and fully invested in wishing nothing but goodness for the characters we meet. Taylor doesn’t have a terrible childhood but wants to leave her small, poor, rural town as soon as she can so she can explore the world. Sure, she’ll miss her mum, but she’s doing it so she doesn’t end up becoming a teen mother: often the only route for young girls where she lives. So, off she sets and ends up being given a baby girl from Appalachian descent. Naming her Turtle, the story unfolds as Taylor tries to make sense of the world while looking after Turtle and developing new, heartbreaking friendships. It’s a story about selflessness, self discovery, and community. This has left its mark on me. 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I don’t really know what to say about this book because I don’t think I have the repertoire or the ability to do it justice. I can tell you she is one of my favourite authors, I read it once, went away and watched Dopesick on iPlayer and then read it again. I have underlined sentences and I have turned down corners on pages that just say so much. I have never re-read a book immediately after I have finished it. It is THAT GOOD. I now miss Demon. I understand so much more of poverty and care, big pharma, American prejudices, addiction and shame. I will always remember his comparison of country life versus city life and how ‘our juice’ is used up on all the wrong things. But most of all I will be happy that he made it through. What a book ♥️📕 #lightfootlibrary #barbarakingsolver #demoncopperhead #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks PS it’s a modern day David Copperfield 😀

While this is probably my least favorite Barbara Kingsolover book I’ve read, Unsheltered is still a damn fine book. She is just that good. In present-ish day, Willa is rehabilitating an aging farmhouse her husband inherited in New Jersey; she’s helping care for her new grandbaby after the tragic passing of her daughter-in-law, and also navigating elder care for her sickly (and proudly bigoted) Greek father-in-law, Nick. More than a century prior, in the same town, Thatcher Greenwood, a science teacher, finds himself at odds with the community when he insists on teaching the exciting work being published by Charles Darwin. Both protagonists find themselves fighting the good fight against (willful) ignorance, both laboring under the delusion that their generation is uniquely burdened with resistance to progress. This is Kingsolver’s Trump book, and by far her preacheist. I get why there was patchy reception to The Unsheltered. Though it never mentions Trump by name - I suspect this story might ruffle some conservative readers. Meanwhile Nick is in no way a likable character, he is intended to be offensive to ... everyone. I don’t think that the dual storylines are quite as aligned as Kingsolver intended them to be, but it didn’t detract too much from my enjoyment of the story. I love Kingsolver, but I think her contemporary novels by far exceed her historical fiction. I gave this story four stars on my reading tracker app. While it’s easily my least favorite Kingsolver book to date, I think it’s a worthy read in its own right, and I see the genesis of her masterpiece, Demon Copperhead, in these pages. Have you read this one? What’s your favorite Kingsolver novel?

#demoncopperhead #barbarakingsolver #verslaving #armoede #familie #appalachen #leestip #boekentip #pullitzerprizewinner #boekstagram #bookstagram

In Store - Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, this is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. In a plot that never pauses for breath, relayed in his own unsparing voice, he braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities. Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens’ anger and compassion, and above all, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they can’t imagine leaving behind.

#barbarakingsolver #demoncopperhead #ausgelesen #romanempfehlung #romane #pulitzerpreisträger #womensprizeforfiction #dtvverlag #argonverlag #germanbookstagram #buchblogaufinstagram #lesenswert #leseempfehlung

Took my new books out for a walk today. Can’t wait to read them all, sitting outside under the warm sun, preferably! 📚☀️ ⠀ 📚I’ve read many great reviews of This is How You Lose the Time War and Demon Copperhead, so was happy to find them in the bookshop. ⠀ 📚Foundation and Earth is the last book in the cycle, there should be many insights and new layers of the story and I’m excited to read it. Although it’s always bitter sweet to finish a book series. ⠀ 📚The Burning God is also the last book from the Kuang’s trilogy and I’m bracing myself for what’s coming. ⠀ Have you read any of the books and what did you think of them? 😍💕

“I was inked with the shit prints of life.” - Chapter 29 • Barbara Kingsolver, Demon Copperhead, 2022 #bookquotes #amreading • /// • Barbara Kingsolver was thinking about Dicken’s book David Copperfield, and found herself wondering what the titular orphan would have grappled with today, had he grown up in the United States in the 1990s. The result was Demon Copperhead, the Pulitzer winning coming-of-age story about a boy in Appalachia who lost his mother to the Opioid Crisis. • Demon’s story pits his determination to survive against a generational cycle of working-class poverty, a cast of crooks who profit from the U.S. foster system, and, eventually, his own prescription pain-medication addiction. • This book became personal for me fairly quickly. The details of Demon’s childhood echoed mine; we ate the same fast-food, watched the same television shows, had the same comic books. Like me, he was infinitely curious yet unable to maintain attention in traditional public school classes, teaching himself to draw in order to sit still during the long, painful stretches in a classroom. His observations and inner thoughts were also familiar. • I related to friends and family members in Kingsolver’s descriptions of Demon’s rural, small town existence — the folks tragically holding on to the lies that industry and jobs would someday return, that the farms would again prosper, and that cities, along with the people who lived in them, were not to be trusted. The sequence where his foster sister, Angus, failed to convince the school board to invest in competitive scholastic programs because they needed what was left of their slashed budgets for football was especially poignant. His friends, one-by-one, became the sum of choices that were made years before they were born. • Demon Copperhead is marked by suffering and interspersed with fleeting triumph. It lends perspective on what America is like in the middle places, far from the large population centers and economic opportunity. • I’m thankful for Kingsolver’s empathy and authenticity in telling this story. Keep going, Demon! I hope you make it, buddy. • /// • #barbarakingsolver #demoncopperhead

MEJORES LECTURAS PRIMER CUATRIMESTRE 2024. Miał pecha do uzależnionej matki, pecha do ojca, pecha do ojczyma. Miał pecha do rodzin zastępczych, a później… Później miał pecha jeszcze do wielu innych rzeczy😉 Ale Demon trwa. Na przekór wszystkiemu dzień za dniem. To niesamowite i budujące. #bezstronna #demoncopperhead #barbarakingsolver #amerykanskisen

[RESERVED] The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver Condition: Great Price: R80 Size: Medium The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it -- from garden seeds to Scripture -- is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family's tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.(Goodreads) #ThePoisonwoodBible #BarbaraKingsolver #LiteraryFiction #HistoricalFiction #CulturalHeritage #Africa #FamilySaga #BookRecommendation #Missionary #ClassicLiterature #PoliticalFiction #CharacterStudy

I wanted to love this book so much…because everyone else I know loved this book. But I struggled. Don’t get me wrong, it’s well-written but, as I kept reading, I struggled to connect with some of the characters, including the main character. I’ve also never read “David Copperfield” by Dickens so not sure if that took away from my enjoyment! That being said, it was a great exploration of trauma and addiction in Appalachia today. From child removal by CPS to the rising opiate addiction, it’s all rawly and realistically covered here. Damon’s story is probably the story of many others today. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Has there been any books others have loved that you just have found to be just okay? This is just a great book. Just a genuine pleasure to read with a ceaseless plot and beautiful writing. This kind of story, about this kind of life, could have easily been trite and heavy-handed, but Kingsolver brings an honest, knowing and generous touch. Demon was the one of the most lovable characters I’ve ever encountered, one I won’t forget.

🐍 demon copperhead 🐍 Genre: Historical Fiction/Literary Format: Physical/Audio 4.75🌟 - I really really liked it! What a heartbreaking coming-of-age story. Stories that stay with me the most are often character-driven novels with emotional impact, and this one truly fits the bill. Dark, gritty, and set in the Appalachia in the 90s we are taken on a journey of immense growth and pain with moments of happiness and joy. This book feels so beautifully and innately human. With stunning prose and gripping storytelling, this is one that will stay with me for a long time! If you resonated with stories like Betty and A Little Life, this is one I would recommend! A moment for this edition! I absolutely am obsessed with the @barnesandnoble edition. Do you prefer more character-driven books or plot-driven?

Bezradność tłumią opioidami i alkoholem. #demoncopperhead #barbarakingsolver #pulitzerprize #wydawnictwopoznańskie #literaturaamerykańska #powieść #czytamnagrodzone #audiobookstagram #legimi #bookphotography #bookstagrampl #booklover #readeveryday #readers #czytamdlaprzyjemności #czytambolubię #słuchamaudiobooki #słuchamzlegimi #czytamksiążki #molksiążkowy #proza #dobraksiążka #polecamksiążkę #oksiążkach #takczytam #książki #ksiazkoholizm #przeczytane Wydawnictwo Poznańskie czytam książki powieść bookstagram recenzje literatura

Takie książki to ja lubię. Mniej znana powieść Barbary Kinsolver Odyseja to książka o wrażliwości, inteligencji i dostrzeganiu piękna w otaczającym świecie, mimo burzliwych okoliczności. Bohater odbywa fascynującą podróż ku dojrzałości, podczas której ociera się mimowolnie o meksykańską sztukę dzięki Fridzie Kahlo i Diego Riverze, poznaje rosyjską rewolucję pracując u Trockiego aż dociera do z pozoru spokojnego „radosnego” kraju czyli Ameryki.

I never read #davidcopperfield and didn't know that this was a remake until after I'd finished it. I wish I had. But I loved this. "Demon" is born to a young, single mom, an addict who was raised in foster care, in rural western Virginia. Despite some obvious challenges, he has fond memories of his mom's love and a childhood running wild in the woods. When a controlling and abusive step-father enters the picture, things go downhill fast. Demon ends up in foster care himself, laboring on a tobacco farm, treated like a dog, learning very early how to fend for himself and take whatever pleasure he can get. School, when he can attend, is a nightmare. At 11 years old, a turning point. He runs away and finds his long-lost grandmother, a uniquely strong personality. She arranges for him to live with the varsity football coach and his daughter. Finally things are looking up. Demon is in TAG. Demon is good-looking. Demon is a tight end. Demon is in love. And then a knee injury. And then oxy. And a whole bunch of messes. The entire community is overrun. His story is stomach-churning, unacceptable, incredible and yet always rings true. We pray that Demon will be ok somehow. We pray for all of them. There is a happy end here, which I came to expect in the last few pages, but was still such a sweet surprise that I teared up. I can't recommend this enough. The writing is so good. The characters are so good. And man is life unfair. #demoncopperhead #barbarakingsolver #yayestillreads #appalachia #opioidcrisis #melungeons

Eine Art „David Copperfield“ in modern? Dickens 2.0?

When in doubt, illustrate book covers!! It gives me a chance to practice my painting and lettering skills at the same time #barbarakingsolver is definitely one of my favourite contemporary female authors, right up there with #elifshafak and #margaretatwood And with that I’ve completed the last page of my #moleskinesketchbook. I’m looking forward to starting a new one, and doing lots of relaxed sketchbook practice, improving painting and drawing skills, and hopefully get inspired to do new collections on canvas #artist #artistsoninstagram #artistoninstagram #artistmom #artistmomlife #artistinmontreal #montrealartist #artsy #art #moleskine #missionmijellogold #inkandwatercolor #bookcoverart #booklover #bookcoverillustration

W powieści "Lot motyla" (@wydawnictwofilia) Barbara Kingsolver, autorka głośnej powieści "Demon Copperhead", laureatka Nagrody Pulitzera i The Women's Prize For Fiction, porusza jeden z najważniejszych tematów naszych czasów - zmiany klimatyczne. Wywołuje to konsternację wśród naukowców, przywódców religijnych i dziennikarzy, a życie Dellarobii i okolicznych mieszkańców przewraca do góry nogami.
