9 APRIL 1987 – SPECIAL FORCES BRANCH BIRTHDAY Although the first U.S. Army Special Forces unit was formed 11 June 1952, the Special Forces branch was established as one of the Army’s basic branches on 9 April 1987. The mission of U.S. Army Special Forces is to conduct a variety of special operations that range from direct action, counterterrorism, special reconnaissance, and foreign internal defense missions to unconventional warfare. Special Forces soldiers may also be deployed abroad to take part in humanitarian efforts. The U.S. Army Special Forces had its origins in the 1st Special Service Force and the Operational Groups of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II. The Special Forces branch insignia, the crossed arrows, was adapted from that originally worn by the U.S. Army Indian Scouts, and later by the 1st Special Service Force. The first Special Forces unit in the Army was formed on 11 June 1952, when the 10th Special Forces Group was activated at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. A major expansion occurred in the 1960s during the Vietnam War, with additional groups organized in the Regular Army, Army Reserve, and Army National Guard. As a result of renewed emphasis on special operations in the 1980s, the Special Forces branch was established as a basic branch of the Army effective 9 April 1987, by Army General Order (AGO) No. 35, 19 June 1987.
