• Some of the most important parts of the American camps in Iraq (obvs) were the Dining FACilities or DFACs. ‘An army marches on its stomach’ as Sunfredopoleon Naperick Tzu the Great might once have said. And an Air Force needs to know where the ice cream is, when not eating beef jerky. The camps were so big there were numerous DFACs. They probably had official names but we nicknamed them all so we could decide where to go for tea. They all offered the same food, the bigger ones more of it and more variety, but we all swore blind the quality was better at certain DFACs. There was Big Eats, Little Eats, Shit Eats… and Aussie Eats. The last one was so named because there were often a few more Aussie uniforms there, not because there was a DFAC run by ‘Strayans serving epic barbecue. Unfortunately I don’t know many Australians, which is a shame as those I have met are ace. They’re bloody terrifying professionally though. They just seem to have innate ferocious skill & professionalism despite being totally chilled the rest of the time. So listening to the Veteran State of Mind podcast first episode of the new format with a series of War Stories today was epic. As you know I’ve been a fragile little flower the last few months, & haven’t done much military thought, but this podcast had me grinning from ear to ear. I therefore recommend you find a relaxing spot, check your shoes for Redbacks, open a tinnie of shit lager, throw another shrimp on the Barbie, curse your fellow whinging Poms, & enjoy another epic piece of modern history. NEW EPISODE ALERT! Troy Knight was member of the Royal Australian Airforce and was one of the first Airmen to pass 2nd Commando Regiment selection and to serve with what was at the time a new Special Forces unit, the elite 4 Squadron Combat Controllers Troy Knight’s mates know him as ‘Norm’ or ‘TK’. Born in 1977 to a single mother, Troy grew up as what he describes as a ‘typical Queensland boy’ enjoying surfing, playing rugby league and generally looking for mischief. It was Troy’s boundary pushing and risk taking that fuelled his thirst for adventure and made him walk into the Townsville Defence Force Recruiting office in 1999, just after the East Timor crisis had kicked off. Deflated at being told that Army Recruit training was bottlenecked for eight months, Troy was stopped by an Air Force Sergeant who asked if he knew about the RAAF Airfield Defence Guards. It was this sliding door moment, that would see Troy subsequently travel to Afghanistan, Iraq and beyond and become one of Australia’s first Combat Controllers in the Australian Special Forces. I sat down with Preston Stewart and Seyer Payne of @_warstories_ (War Stories) to talk about Australia's involvement in the Pacific Campaign of the Second World War. This was recorded over Zoom, and the video version of this episode is available on the I Was Only Doing My Job Youtube Channel. The conversation starts with the Fall of Singapore and ends with the Japanese surrender and even the start of the Korean Campaign. NEW EPISODE ALERT! Curtis McGrath OAM has served in the Australian Army as a combat engineer for 6 years where he served with honour in East Timor, Indonesia and Afghanistan. On the 23rd August 2012 Curtis was on a patrol where he stepped right on an improvised explosive device (IED) which detonated beneath him taking both his legs. Only 20min after the explosion, Curtis famously said that “you will see me in the Paralympics”. Since losing his legs Curtis has not looked back 18 months after this fateful day Curtis was crowned World Champion at the World Sprint Canoe Championships in Moscow, Russia. This had started his path to the Paralympics. In 2016, just over 4 years after losing his legs, Curtis true to his word, not only made it to the Paralympics but made history in becoming the first Australian to win a Paralympic Gold medal in the Paracanoe event at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Although the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games were postponed, the goal remained the same. Curtis went into his events as the favourite and did not let the pressure get to him. He defended his Rio Gold medal and added another Gold to his tally in the 200m V1 canoe. Tokyo, although different Curtis maintained his Gold medal winning ways, now with three Paralympic Gold medals next to his name. Curtis has used sport to help him recover and go on to become Paralympic champion. This is the reason he is an advocate for sport and its ability to bring communities and people together to live a healthy active lifestyle, as well as bridging gaps that society has throughout the globe. He has truly lived the Invictus life. Episode #17 now live; On 24 August 2010, in battle in Afghanistan, Army Corporal Daniel Keighran risked his life in a hail of gunfire to save his fellow soldiers. His actions saw him awarded the Victoria Cross. Australia's highest award for bravery. I had the pleasure of hearing first hand Dan's account of the story. An account that impacted me more when I listened back to the audio. This is the story of that days gun fight and battle as well as a reminder to all, of the sacrifice of those serving in the military and their families. Dan's book "Courage under fire" is out 27th Oct but is available on pre-order now. This episode is live on the One Moment Please podcast now. Photo credit: Australian War Museum

I am going on a business trip of sorts for a few weeks so there likely won’t be any posts for a while. In the meantime I would like to share some podcasts about Japan and beyond that you guys might enjoy in my absence and beyond. SIDE NOTE: the podcasts from this list are in English ———————————————- History of Japan by Isaac Meyer This one is an obvious one for this page. Mr. Meyers covers a wide range of topics on Japan from the very beginning of the Island’s history to present day and everything in between. There are even a number of topics involving the Imperial Japanese Military. I highly recommend this one enough. Plus the podcaster is a good guy and helped me with research into modern Japanese naval history. ————————————— History of The Great War by Wesley Livesay A well done podcast the covers many of the highlights of the Great War. Most of the series is broken up into 3-10+ episode series on the major battles of the war. The episodes on the first month of the war are especially enjoyable in my opinion. ———————————-——————— The History of WWII Podcast by Ray Harris Jr. A good podcast that is working into way through WWII. A good thing about this series is that the Second Sino-Japanese War is covered. ——————————-——————— When Diplomacy Fails Podcast by Zach Twamley War is more than just fighting. There is always a before and after to conflict and this podcast covers a large swath of wars. Most of the topics covered are 1500-1800 European conflicts but the Russo-Japanese War and Boxer Rebellion are also covered. Plus there’s a good series on the Military Revolution. ————-————-————————————— The Principles of War This podcast is definitely directed more towards those already in the military but is good if you want to expand your know what aspects armies look at in fights. The Principles of War podcast is designed to educate Officers and Senior NCOs about doctrine through the lens of historic battles and the Principles of War. And in keeping with this page the first series from this podcast covers the Malaya Campaign of 1942. ————————————— ⬇️⬇️continues in the comments⬇️⬇️
