Charlotte Mason’s teachings have transformed my own educational journey as a mother in such exciting ways. Simply by reading more books and finding connections, I’ve deepened my understanding of several different things. Recently, a simple mention of the name ‘Pittenger’ on a ‘Your Story Hour’ triggered a cascade of curiosity. Little did I know, it unearthed a profound family history—my great-great-great-grandfather’s pivotal role in the Civil War and his distinction as a Medal of Honor recipient. I want to share more on this, but I’m still learning as I read through his book. Which I find to be a gift because it allows me to have coffee and get to personally know a great-grandfather. In the introduction of his book, ‘Daring a Suffering,’ his mother is described as a ‘thinking mother.’ Which reminds me of what Charlotte Mason says about mothers, “The mother is qualified,” says Miss Mason, “and qualified by the Creator Himself, to become the principal agent in the development of her child; ... and what is demanded of her is a thinking love.” (Parents and Children) Mason’s emphasis on observation, connection, and lifelong learning has enriched not just my children’s education but also my own journey of discovery. Aber ich träume wieder davon früh Morgens mit meinen Schneeschuhen und meiner Kamera los zu ziehen, das knirschen des Schnees unter meinen Schneeschuhen zu hören und die Bäume in einem weissen dichten Schneekleid zu sehen. On true leisure, not the absence of work Leisure is not the absence of work; recreation is not doing something “for fun”. Leisure is not us emptying our stress tank to prevent overflow from the stresses of life, just so that we can be filled again when we return to our work. It is a re-creation of that vessel altogether. Sure, a change in the shape of a vessel could increase its capacity to hold, but beyond that, each iteration is an image tweaked ever so slightly toward that which you are being formed. Things like mindless scrolling, binge-watching shows, and stress eating are numbing and temporarily empty off a bit of our tank. But do they truly rejuvenate us and make us better people? When we are pushed to the edge by the cumulative frustrations and anxieties of life, it’s easy to run toward a quick escape. True leisure is not easy. It requires a habit of prudence, making sound judgment and intentionality around how we choose to spend our time. If you’ve been feeling on edge lately, perhaps consider incorporating leisure into your life’s regular rhythms? It will be hard, but hard is not bad, and nothing worthwhile ever comes easy.
